Album Description

"All The Rage" is the debut release from LA-based singer/songwriter Cary Brothers. These four tracks, produced by Chad Fischer (Alexi Murdoch), run the gamut from power pop ("Supposed To Be") to acoustic folk ("Honestly"), but they all share one thing in common - as Cary says, "They're all pretty much straight from the heart, whether it's being broken or put back together."

Cary's song "Blue Eyes" is also featured alongside tracks from Coldplay, The Shins, and Simon & Garfunkel on the soundtrack of the Fox Searchlight film GARDEN STATE, starring Zach Braff, Natalie Portman, and Peter Sarsgaard.

3 out of 5 stars Too Few Songs, Too Much Money .......2006-03-20

I Paid $9 for this CD, and while it is a good cd, there are only 3 songs on it for a total of 14 minutes of listening pleasure. I find this to be a rip off. Do yourself a favor and buy a longer CD for the money.

5 out of 5 stars Buy it!.......2005-09-08

Excellent mini album that includes some music from Scrubs and Garden State. Well worth buying and Cary has another album out this month as well. (If you like this album try Lucky Jim - Our Troubles End Tonight) No need to try before you buy - all 4 songs get 5 stars from me, excellent voice and each song has a different feel to it.

5 out of 5 stars Heartbreaking and beautiful.......2005-08-11

Cary Brothers is an excellent musician and songwriter, and in "All the Rage", he really showcases his talent. I saw him play live in a small indie record store before I even got to hear the EP. I wasn't all that familiar with him but I really like his song, "Blue Eyes" from Garden State. So to say the least, when I saw him perform a mini-concert for the 10 or so people in the store, I was more than impressed, and from that point on I became a fan. I also got to meet him for a few minutes after the show. He was very down-to-earth and seemed humble. For the most part, his songs sound mello and dreamy. A few of his songs boast heartwrenching melodies, especially "Something" which is particulary haunting, and is comparable to "Blue Eyes" if not better. I can't wait until the LP comes out, which he said should come out in this month of August.

4 out of 5 stars Nice debut record.......2005-07-28

Cary Brothers is something of an engima for me-- a folky, rootsy singer-songwriter type, this is pretty far outside the domain of my usual listening, and yet there's something about his music that worked pretty well for me.

What I think it is may be that there's a sense of honesty without pretention that circulates through his record-- when he sings about trying to put a past romance out of his mind and quietly mumbles "I wish your love away", you feel like he does. Brothers' vocals feel like they come from the midwest-- a sort of road weary sound. But he adds to that a good range and roundness of tone that I think is often missing in these forms.

This EP, consisting of four songs, is his debut. Three of the songs are folky pop pieces and one ("Supposed to Be") is a driving alt-pop piece. Although its a decent number, it doesn't quite fit in on the record, and its electric guitars sit somewhat uncomfortably amongst the rest of the pieces on here.

But the rest is all this kind of bluesy, folky pop stuff-- smokey ("Blue Eyes", also featured on the "Garden State" soundtrack), bubbling and delicate ("Something") and wistful and brilliant ("Honesty"). One thing the record definitely indicates, we can expect big things from Brothers. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Cary is amazing!.......2005-06-08

Cary Brothers has a wonderful, soothing voice and all the songs on this EP are great! He is one of the best emerging arists right now and I can't wait for him to release a full length album!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2007-03-09

The cd arrived well before the estimated date and I just love the music.

5 out of 5 stars I buy this one for all my gal friends!.......2007-01-12

I have listened to this over and over and over, never tire of it.

5 out of 5 stars Peace and Harmony.......2004-03-09

I have so very much enjoyed all of Marina Raye's recordings. They fill me with such a peaceful, serene feeling. I commute a long distance daily, and play them every day while I am on the road. The music seems to make the miles fly past. My current favorite is Womanspirit. In addition to the beautiful flute music on this recording, I find the percussion of Mr. Olabayo fascinating. I would recommend Marina's recordings to all who are seeking a soothing, melodious musical experience.

5 out of 5 stars Peacefulness and tranquility.......2004-02-10

I first was introduced to Marina's music at a mutual friend's wedding in The Garden Of The Gods. Since then I have gotten all of her albums. I used to like a very quiet house when I read or did crafts. Now I almost always have one of her CD's playing in the background. It is so peaceful and relaxing. It makes me feel like I am in another place and time and it is wonderful there. I would recommend this or any of the other CD's to round out your collection. Thank you so much Marina and Charlie Oakwind.

4 out of 5 stars Gentle and healing.......2003-08-05

A friend played this during our weekly Sunday sister meeting, a prayer circle, and it completed the tryst. It set our minds ready to pray and meditate...calming and encouraging of healing, settling into gentleness. It is excellent music for intentional solitary time. Healing is the act, green is the color that represent this good work. There is a place in everyone's life for this music.

5 out of 5 stars Other worldly Mountain Music transcends Bluegrass.......2007-02-17

Other worldly harmonies, haunting female vocals. Crooked Still lies somewhere on the other side of Bluegrass and Folk. Guess you could say they transcend Bluegrass. Much like Nickel Creek, Crooked Still blazes a new trail down in the lower range of traditional Mountain Music. We live up the mountain from Doc Watson and plan on seeing them at MerleFest in April. If you ever get their interpretation of Gillian Welch's Orphan Girl in your head you're in trouble my friend. Thanks Crooked Still. I for one am glad you took this fork in the music world instead of the classical one you were on. Go ahead, and buy this CD you will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Alternative bluegrass at its best!.......2006-12-14

It's absolutely amazing what this band can do with a hundred-year old song.

I was fortunate to catch Crooked Still promoting this debut CD at the 2006 Grey Fox Bluegrass festival in upstate New York. The audience seemed to be in awe. All the buzz was about them, and the line to buy one of their CDs was too long for me to wait in. I bought from CDBaby instead. (I got even luckier when I caught them in Madision, CT 4 months later, bought a second copy, and conversed with the band.)

I'd describe them as alternative bluegrass. The bluesy tunes are the most alluring for me. Listen to Last Fair Deal and Old Virginia on CDBaby - the long sound clip captures a beautiful cello solo, a wonderful double bass, an artful backround banjo, and good samples of lead singer/band leader Aiofe O'Donvan's sweet yet sultry voice. For more fun, listen to Angeline the Baker, Orphan Girl, Lulu Gal, Shady Grove, and of course, Hop High. And there's the rest... actually, there is not one bad song on this CD, so sample them all!

I would not purchase a used CD if you can afford not to; this band may not make the top 40 (like all bluegrass, unfortunately), but the band members deserve the credit for their talent - buy it new so they can get it.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible, Unique, Fresh Music.......2006-09-23

I was fortunte to see CS in a small listening room in Charlottesvile last year and the performance was very special. I highly recommend keeping an ear out for the band and catching them when you can -- Last Fair Deal Gone Down is a stunning rendition of a classic.

4 out of 5 stars Buy it for the bowed bass (and cello).......2006-02-27

This is the first bluegrass-flavored music I've ever heard that goes wild in the lower registers.

5 out of 5 stars If you love good music crooked still is a must for your collection.......2006-02-11

Being on the other side of the big ocean, we only get info of new groups through a limited number of channels. I am very lucky that CD Baby informed me that this title was available. Great music, a lot of folk, part bluegrass, part pop. Great combination. Add the good looks from Aoife and you have all ingredients to sell this album. I realise that a live show in Europa is far from realistic, but i think there shows to be awesome.

5 out of 5 stars come in from the cold...........2004-05-29

i love minibar. i love this cd. i love everything about it.
i owned the debut Road Movies and loved every single note played and sung on it, when i got Fly Below The Radar, i was surprised to hear how far they've come since then. It Is What It Is makes a great opener, with a beautiful climax to the end, followed by what is in my eyes the gem of the record, Unstoppable (a track also featured on Greatest Hits Vol. I by Trampoline Records, the label of Pete Yorn, Rami Jaffee (Wallflowers) and Marc Dauer), a slow, bittersweet waltz, with beautiful harmonies. For me, the highlights of the record are Unstoppable, Breathe Easy (this song will lighten up your mood, no matter what), the title trach Fly Below The Radar and Fragile, which happen to be the songs that were produced by Rami Jaffee and Greg Richling of the Wallflowers.
Pete Yorn called Minibar one of his favourite bands and Jakob Dylan highly recommends Fly Below The Radar, too.
go and get it.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD,.......2003-12-02

Fly Below the Radar is a great folow up to Road Movies, I like road movies, but its a little to poppy for me. It is What it is, is a perfect opener for the CD, the bonus disk is also great, Tim rocks on New Mexico.
If you like their cds you will love them live, the rock, and are the greatest guys ever. Mal (their drummer) is one of the kindest people i have ever met.

3 out of 5 stars Maybe a little over-hyped.......2003-08-19

I decided to sell this CD back to the store I bought it from...not because it's bad (it's not). It just didn't do it for me and I was prepared to like them. 'It Is What It Is' is undeniably a good, catchy song and it is heads above anything else on this CD.

The singer possesses a velvety smooth voice, but one that is lacking any edge whatsoever. After a while, it's hard to care about what he is saying. The production is a little too "mid range" for my tastes as well (or maybe it's my stereo). The sound is a little muddled.

The music is sort of orchestrated alternative/roots rock with a pronounced Britpop sheen about it, although not nearly as accomplished as the like-minded Grand Drive.

At any rate, I give this 3 stars. Just because I didn't like it doesn't mean it's not any good. There's just not enough twang for me. It's definitely more rock than roots.

5 out of 5 stars Radar Love.......2003-06-11

Flying below the radar they have but not for long. A
British quartet of truly fine musicians who have a
unique sound that sets them apart and above many a
pop/alternative/rock/country band out there. Their latest contribution (Fly Below The Radar)to music is a must have for seekers of great music you can play over and over again. Buy this. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Crash Into My Room ...........2003-06-11

Fly Below The Radar is a phenomenal follow up to Minibar's first full length CD, Road Movies. New Mexico is both haunting and upbeat, reminiscent of the best of the Smiths as Petty sings 'I Need to Be Forgiven But I Can't Remember For What'. Snake Buckle Belt is a throwback to the time just before adolescence when all seems new and before regrets start to mount. Minibar is in good company with the likes of The Old 97's, The Wallflowers, The Jayhawks, Pete Yorn and if you like any of these wonderful artists, you're certain to groove on this CD too.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Music that envelops you in its warmth........2003-12-07

"Dark of the Moon" is the second CD Grey Larsen has recorded in collaboration with the young guitarist and bodhran player Paddy League, and every note of it is an enchanting, musically seamless journey into the soul of Ireland. Whether he's playing the Irish flute, tin whistle, concertina or melodeon, Larsen exhibits a musicianship that is consummately skilled but never showy, always evincing his love of Irish music and his delight in sharing it with listeners. The same can be said of League, who unobtrusively but firmly establishes himself as Larsen's equal. Like a glowing hearth fire, "Dark of the Moon" envelops us in its warmth and light.

Album Description

"Mint" is the ultimate Rachel Loshak album, so far, because of the uniqueness of the songs, originality of the arrangements and intimacy and strength of her vocal style. She has attained a tight feel with her band, Jason Crigler on guitars and Dan Rieser on drums, that supports the delicate, while intense and direct, nature of her soul.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A sexier, more mature, and more eclectic Loshak........2003-02-27

Rachel Loshak's first album, Firefly, had more of a touch of Eastern mysticism, but Mint is an even more confident and diverse collection of simply gorgeous music, reflecting on Loshak's growth as an artist in the last two years.

First off, the mix is clearer, giving instrumental parts and Loshak's magnificent voice room to breathe. Secondly, her songwriting remains structured and engaging, with lyrics that are rich in understated wordplay and quiet emotion. Loshak's bass guitar-based songwriting has paid off in spades; by anchoring the harmonic intent of the songs in the bassline, she gives guitarist Jason Crigler basis to colour and augment, while retaining a great sense of freedom for exotic fills and instrumentation.

And the songs are terrific, already well tested in a live setting. What they lose in live spontaneity, they gain in studio detail. The chorus melody of "Rain" is dazzlingly beautiful; "Single Rose" features gorgeous suspended electric-guitar chords and an angelic piano part, followed by an unusually fiery blues-guitar tone from Crigler; "Never Look Back" employs a signature Loshak motif, a buoyant, Eastern-flavoured bassline with her crystalline voice weaving a sumptuous sonic tapestry -- the contrast of Loshak's bell-clear soprano and insistent bass remains magical. While she's always had an amazing voice, she's gained more control in studio of her singing, and she sounds more confident than ever. "The Dreamer" is an atypical Loshak tune in its folksy acoustic guitar; "Latin Rock" features playful percussion parts and long, catchy vocal lines that flow effortlessly; and "Sweet as Sin" features one of her slyest lyrics.

There is more of a romantic leaning to the music on this album, but overall it casts a wider web both in sonics and topicality than Firefly. I listened through the whole album three times the first night I got it, and chances are it'll refuse to leave my CD player throughout 2003. This is just about as flawless an album as I can think of.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An Instant Classic.......2005-12-08

Susie Glaze is an extraordinary singer who has taken her immense talents to a whole new level with "Blue Eyed Darlin.'" What unifies this eclectic folk-bluegrass collection is Ms. Glaze's gorgeous voice which emanates like a force of nature straight from the heart. There are seven original songs on the album which she inhabits so deeply they feel truly timeless. This is stark American music that is drawn from a primal well of love, loneliness, and yearning. It's quite simply a stunning piece of work that should be shared with your friends. And if your friends aren't knocked out by it, then it's probably time for new friends.

5 out of 5 stars If you buy only one big band CD, make it this one.......2007-03-05

This is, without question, one of the finest big band recordings ever made. I was so impressed after hearing the final cut, "Misbehavin'" on the car radio one day, I ordered the CD right away. Master arranger Bob Florence has been on the scene for a long time, but this recording firmly establishes him as a jazz composer and arranger of the highest order. On this recording he leads some of L.A.'s finest in a tour-de-force of charts which range from sensitive ballads to latin to straight-out swing with fantastic solos throughout. Big band musicianship just doesn't get better than this.

5 out of 5 stars A Welcome CD Reissue of A Superb Recording.......2002-01-05

Bob Florence has been a leading bandleader/composer since the 1960's. The current incarnation of his band, the "Limited Edition," had its genesis in the late '70's, with such high-priced talent as Warren Luening, Pete Christlieb, Nick Ceroli, Steve Huffstetter, Chauncey Welsh, etc.

While the band is in terrific shape now (2002) coming off its Grammy-winning "Serendipity 18" album, "Soaring" remains my desert island Bob Florence recording. Made in the early '80's following the wonderfully performed but poorly recorded "Westlake", "Soaring" was recorded on Pete Christlieb's short-lived "Bosco" label (named for his Saint Bernard). He was a member of the band at the time, and this project was done with consummate care.

Florence's compositions are spectacular. From the scorching "Afternoon of A Prawn" to the virtuosic and enormously clever "Misbehavin'" (based on Fats Waller's "Jitterbug Waltz"), he avoids a sometime tendency to produce top quality pattern music and instead delivers some of the finest and most original big band writing of any era. Every composition is a gem.

And then there are the performances. Playing some of the most difficult music ever written for jazz band, the players conjure an ideal balance between edginess and absolute technical security. It helps to have the extraordinary George Graham on lead trumpet and, in Nick Ceroli, one of the greatest big band drummers in history, but the fact is there isn't a hint of a bad note to be found anywhere. Every solo is a standout, everything is perfectly shaded, and almost twenty years after its original release it's impossible to imagine these charts being performed any better than they are here.

I urge any jazz lover - or music lover - or lover of exciting things - to pick this one up without delay. I predict you will be amazed.

5 out of 5 stars Great big band, great charts........1998-06-17

Florence put this one out in the 80's, and the band is first rate. The title track has a killer trombone solo and throughout the entire CD the rhythm section plays as one. Indeed, this album soars!

      Album Description

Another album of sinuous, textural, and ultra-melodic songs penned by Alice Despard. Anchored firmly to the ground in a rock trio format, Despard introduces washes of lap steel, cello, balalaika and distorted fender rhodes sounds to etherealize her sound. Keenly crafted songs, soaring vocals, and intriguing psychedelic ambience with a fat 70's sound is what this album is going for.
