Product Description

Gram Parsons is by and large considered the father; or at least the step-father of country-rock. With his bands, the International Submarine Band, the Byrds, and the Flying Burrito Brothers, Gram Parsons pioneered the concept of a rock band playing country music, and as a solo artist he moved even further into country music, blending the two genres to the point that they became indistinguishable from each other. While he was alive, Parsons was a cult figure that never sold many records, but influenced countless fellow musicians, from the Rollings Stones to the Byrds. In the years since his death, his stature has only grown, as numerous rock and country artists build on his small, but enormously influential, body of work. Gram Parsons was born Cecil Ingram Connor on November 5, 1946. Parsons was the grandson of John Snivley, who owned about one-third of all the citrus fields in Florida. Snivley's daughter married Coon Dog Connor. As a child, Parsons learned how to play the piano at the age of nine, the same year he saw Elvis Presley perform at his school; following that performance, Parsons decided to become a musician. When he was 12, Parsons' father committed suicide. After Connor's death, Parsons and his mother moved in with her parents in Winter Haven, FL; a year after the move, his mother married Robert Parsons, who adopted Gram and the child legally changed his name to Gram Parsons. Gram embraced his step-dad, Robert Parsons, who spoiled him with gifts, including musical instruments, and was supportive of Grams love of music. At the age of 14, Parsons began playing in the local rock & roll band the Pacers, which evolved into the Legends. During its time together, the Legends featured Jim Stafford, who many yars later would have a hit single, Spiders & snakes, and Kent Lavoie, who would later come to fame under the name Lobo, and had a hit called, Me and you and a dog named Boo... In 1963, Parsons formed a folk group called the Shilos who performed throughout Florida and cut several demos. In 1965, Parsons graduated from high school; on the same day he graduated, his mother died of alcohol poisoning. Following his graduation, Gram Parsons enrolled at Harvard, where he studied theology. Parsons only spent one semester at Harvard and, while he was there, he spent more time playing music than attending classes. During Grams time at Harvard, he formed the International Submarine Band with guitarist John Nuese, bassist Ian Dunlop and drummer Mickey Gauvin. After he dropped out of college, he moved to New York with the International Submarine Band in 1966. The group spent a year in New York, developing a heavily country-influenced rock & roll sound and cutting two unsuccessful singles for Columbia. The band relocated to Los Angeles in 1967, where they secured a record contract with Lee Hazlewood's LHI record label. The group's debut album, Safe at Home, was released in early ‘68, but by the time it appeared, the group had already disbanded. Around the time the International Submarine Band dissolved, Parsons met Chris Hillman, the bassist for the Byrds. At that time, the Byrds were rebuilding their lineup and Hillman recommended to the band's leader, Roger McGuinn, that Parsons join the band. By the spring of 1968, Parsons had become a member of the Byrds and he was largely responsible for the group's shift towards country music with their album Sweetheart of the Rodeo. Originally, the album was going to feature Parsons' lead vocals, but he was still contractually obligated to LHI, so his voice had to be stripped from the record. Gram Parsons only spent a few months with the Byrds, leaving the band in the fall of 1968 because he refused to accompany them on a tour of South Africa, allegedly because he opposed apartheid. Chris Hillman left the band shortly after him and the duo formed the Flying Burrito Brothers in late 1968. Parsons and Hillman enlisted pedal steel guitarist Sneaky Pete Kleinow and b

It is wonderful to discover new (to me anyway) artists who play Gram's music so well. Thank you for not forgetting him and his music, it is a beautiful tribute. I am looking forward to exploring more of Laughing Gravy's music. I would like to thank the entire site for not being "Nashville"

As a long time GP fan I found these songs to be in the spirit of the great man. Country songs done in the country way. Great instrumentation and fantastic sound. Clear out the living room and prepare to start dancin'.

If this music don't get you up off your seat... if it don't make you dance with the nearest stranger, laugh and cry and sing along, or at least try... somebody call for CPR. If you didn't pay much attention to Gram Parsons during his too-short career, this Tribute by Laughing Gravy will make you wonder why not. I could probably live without food, or water, or maybe even air... but not without music. Laughing Gravy has served up a Gram Parson banquet. DLP

5 out of 5 stars Very good new age music.......2007-06-08

I bought this cd because I like Carlos Nakai's music and because the title is eyecatching. If you get your hands on this one, be sure to read the track titles and the blurbs about each one. They are hilarious. The music itself, however, isn't a joke and is very enjoyable new age and mostly instrumental. If you like serene and peaceful, then you'll probably enjoy this one.

    5 out of 5 stars first-rate debut.......1999-09-05

Having heard much about this band in the local press I had very high expectations and was not disappointed! A Sense Of Direction is a rich collection of songs that reveals something different and new with each listen. My favorites are the opening song, "To Wander In This Way" and the title track. Songwriter Dave Isaacs has a great ear for melody and a talent for writing majestic, sweeping epic songs. Check this one out if you want to hear where country music is headed in the next millenium!

This is one of the most impressive independent releases I've ever seen. The songwriting is first-rate....great hooks and thoughtful lyrics performed with passion and conviction. Even the design of the CD itself was clearly given great care. All told, a first-rate product and I can't wait to hear more.

One listen to this cd and they had me hooked. I totally enjoy this cd from start to finish, from the sadness of To Wander in this Way to the hopefullness of the Ballad of Jackalope Junction, a story is being told that captivates me each time. It's hard to choose a favorite song since each track has a special feel and beautiful lyrics. Dave Isaacs writes songs the old-fashioned way, with strong melodies and sing-along hooks. I consider this sophisticated country no twang and pick-up trucks. Elegant, wonderful music. A pleasure to listen to time and time again.

1 out of 5 stars Unimaginative but Mechanically Good.......1999-05-29

I was somewhat saddened at the overall package. Seems like a showcase for someone more obsessed with himself than with creating an artistic statement. So much more could have been done lyrically with the ideas that were presented. The songs were mostly unimaginative and bland with few exceptions. I was expecting MUCH more from this CD from the reviews I have heard and from the word of mouth form people who have seen them live.

Tom Waits, Charlie Musselwhite, Johnny Otis, Holly Near, David Grisman, Audrey Auld, & Camper Van Beethoven are among the Northern California artists contributing songs to this tremendous benefit CD for KRCB Radio.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars 'Connections 2' finds bond in our shared community By Karl Byrn .......2005-06-25

Charlie Musselwhite, David Grisman, Tom Waits, Camper Van Beethoven, Alex de Grassi--this list sounds like a set of artists found in a random search for "adult alternative" favorites, right?

Actually, these stellar acts all have very cool tracks on Connections 2, a new compilation of 22 Northern California musicians that's not only a benefit for local public radio station KRCB 90.9-FM, but is also a rich and compelling slice of our best local music.

"It became my mix tape, like the dude in High Fidelity," says producer and KRCB program host Doug Jayne, who co-owns Santa Rosa's Last Record Store, plays in two local bands and runs the Route 44 recording studio where much of the disc was recorded and mastered. "The CD sounds more like my radio program [Connections on Wednesdays at 8pm] than a CD. The songs on this album all breathe. I think the CD sounds like Northern California in 2004, and is a good document of a year we won't soon forget."

Like Jayne's 1996 Connections KRCB benefit disc, Connections 2 represents the authentic character of Sonoma County and North Bay music. Rather than being a hotbed of cutting edge rock, jazz or hip-hop, our region has a distinct strength as a blender of American and international folk, rhythm and roots traditions. The disc is sequenced to highlight this hybrid diversity, alternating styles but repeating the connections. From the opening wail of Musselwhite's blues harmonica solo "Durant Street" to Jayne's own final reflective folk cut "Not Dead Yet," Connections 2 finds bonds in the depth of our shared musical community.

Waits' previously unreleased "Buzz Fledderjohn" shares an eerie delta blues landscape with the Mali-meets-Leadbelly moan of Markus James' "Midnight." Grisman's semiclassical mandolin and violin duet "Desert Dawg" is linked with the European cafe music of the Hot Frittatas. The nu-Celtic romp of Greenhouse complements the pure bluegrass swing of Modern Hicks. Solid Air has a could-be country radio hit with "Local Color," a contemporary female-led sound echoed in Audrey Auld's more rock-leaning "Losing Faith." The acoustic guitar reading of the blues standard "St. James Infirmary" by de Grassi is glistening, as is the pedal-steel instrumental "The Courtship" by local master Bobby Lee.

Connecting the dots wasn't too difficult for the producer. With his track record and KRCB's growth in the last decade, Jayne had plenty of volunteers. "When I produced Connections in 1996, I was new to the station. I wanted to show that I was committed to the cause. The CD was like a promise ring: 'I will be true to you, old 90.9-FM.' This time, instead of groveling for songs, or having to explain my motivations or what KRCB is about, people were lining up wanting to contribute. I was able to personally pick the songs by the artists. It makes the producer's job so much easier knowing the pieces will fit in the frame of a compilation."

Jayne gives the credit to community spirit. "Folks around here know how important public radio is," he notes, because "KRCB is a great station. Even though it is an NPR affiliate, it is very independent." KRCB members who had pledged during the station's fall membership drive were invited to a Nov. 12 concert at New College of California that featured almost half of the disc's 22 acts. The response? "Sardine city!" says Jayne of the standing-room-only crowd.

With such a terrific turnout by both top-name national acts and local musicians who are ready to be top name, Connections 2 is full of reference points that will strike local music fans for any number of personal reasons. My favorites are songwriter Greg Abel's "Last Call Dance Hall," a waltz-time honky-tonk ballad written from the point of view of the bar itself; Holly Near's anti-Republican gospel romp "Fired Up!"; and Camper Van Beethoven's live-in-the-studio acoustic take on their alt-rock classic "Take the Skinheads Bowling."

Jayne's closing cut "Not Dead Yet" is personal as well, part of his link to this greater community. "I wrote it as a response to the deaths of Warren Zevon and Johnny Cash. I thought it was OK when I wrote it, but after listening to it, I felt depressed. I laughed, I got depressed again. Then I was hopeful. Four feelings in four minutes; I knew I had to share it."

With Connections 2, Jayne helps the local music scene share its best

4 out of 5 stars R. Carlos Nakai before success in the New Age Music genre.......2004-07-21

This is early Carlos...back when he played at the coffee shop near U of A in Tucson. I absolutely love this CD as well as their other Jackalope title, Weavings. It's a strange sound to those expecting similarity to his CDs with Kater or his later solos. The first time I saw them perform these pieces live I was enthralled. If you like Nakai and synthesizer music with a Mexican/Native American sound this CD is for you. It's too bad this trio didn't record more - I much prefer this to his later CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Ruminators sounding better than ever!.......2000-07-17

It was in 1990 I first heard the Ruminators opening for Tempest, if I recall. They had a very unique sound that really grooved. Soft, airy, but down to earth. I bought their first CD and loved it, especially their remake of the Beatles "You Can't Do That," which is one of the very few times that someone has done a better job of a remake.

This new album is most excellent, and they sound excellent. The songs flow together quite nicely and it's a real pleasure to listen to.

4 out of 5 stars Duo brings sounds of love to airy folk creations.......1999-10-10

Independent songsmiths offer what those who have gone on to record with big name studios cannot. Namely, music that sounds almost live and true to the performing arts. That has never been more truer than with the ruminators who vocals, harmonies and hooks need no production value to sound good. This is contempory folk on the lighter side. Mostly rousing balads and songs of new-found love, there is much to spur you on to a better mood. Listen and enjoy.

        4 out of 5 stars what a treat..........1999-03-14

what an absolute, tasty little treat. its smart, funny, and sometimes wonderfully crude. though sarita choudhury is billed first on most reviews & press, naveen andrews steals the show--its his film, all the way. and hes utterly beautiful--again, even as a citified drugstore cowboy. this movie abounds w/ exceedingly bad hats & seedy western wear, and "dude" is said a few too many times; but it seems that attwood is using these devices as affect, not as a british understanding of country music & its culture, but rather, as a way to contrast southall & londons tightly packed markets with the big sky & wide open places so revered in country. here, in _wild west_, you even find cheatin', drinkin', love for mama, & a porch-dog (whos a little star in his own right), as well as intersting use of the word "redneck." thanks to the (wonderful) exploitation of that nebulous musical genre known as "alternative country," _wild west_ maintains a refreshing obscurity (contrary to the above review, there is, thank god, no garth brooks on the soundtrack). the only morsel missing is willie nelsons "mamas, dont let your babies grow up to be cowboys," which would have said it all.

5 out of 5 stars Off the beaten path comedy.......1998-12-31

One of the best indy-type films I have seen in a long while. If you like non-formula films, then see this one. The cast is first rate-- anyone remember Kip from 'The English Patient'? The writing is excellent, and it always hits the right mark when searching for a laugh. One of my favorites!

4 out of 5 stars One CD is Not Enough.......2000-02-08

Even though Tony's vocals are a little rough, his instrumental talents and accompaniments make this CD a pleasure to listen to. It's evident that Tony has a real gift for the guitar and we need to hear more from him. I would compare him to artists like Leo Kottke. Both of them work the guitar like a fine surgical instrument.
