For this movie about 1930s boxer Jim Braddock (Russell Crowe), director Ron Howard interrupted his longtime collaboration with composer James Horner and teamed up with Thomas Newman. It's a wise decision: Newman has a lighter touch and his somber palette emphasizes the fact that Cinderella Man is more thoughtful drama than mere brawling flick (even a track titled "Pugilism" eschews obvious punchiness in favor of ominous, rolling tribal-like percussion. Elsewhere, "Weehawken Ferry" illustrates Newman's ability to write swelling, majestic music that's not bombastic. Typical of the subdued approach is Paul Giamatti's version of "Londonderry Air," which he delicately whistles. The score is interspersed with a few lovely Depression-era tunes such as Chicago tenor saxist Bud Freeman's "Tillie¹s Downtown Now," Roane's Pennsylvanians' "We've Got to Put that Sun Back in the Sky," and especially Eddie Cantor's wonderfully biting "Cheer Up, Smile, Nertz" ("Our judges are queer/Our banks disappear/And all the while they tell us to smiiiiile"). --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The Soundtrack to Cinderella Man is great.......2007-01-11

Cinderella Man is one of my favorite movies of all time. And the soundtrack does not disappoint. They have all of the powerful songs heard on the DVD. It even has the songs that you could barely hear in the movie because they were simply background music to the scenes. For instance, when Mike Wilson and Jim Braddock sit down together after work and have a drink and discuss the troubled times their nation was facing during the depression, you can faintly hear a song called, "We've Got to Put that Sun Back in the Sky" by Roane's Pennsylvanians. That song is on here in its entirety.

The other example is found in the scene where Joe Gould is seen driving off after just speaking with Jim about his hopes of getting him another fight after Jim had defeated Corn Griffin. Joe is trying to leave before Mae can see him because he knows she would not approve of his talking with Jim and the potential of another fight for her husband. Anyway, just as he gets in the car, and as he drives off, you can here Bud Freeman's "Tillie's Downtown Now" being played--another great song from that era.

Every sound of Cinderella Man is found on this soundtrack. The lone downside to this CD is that the songs are not found in the order they appear in the movie. The first four songs are in order and the last five or so are in order, and the rest is thrown in the middle. They are all there, but as is typical for most soundtracks, they don't all coincide with the order presented in the picture.

This soundtrack is a terrific purchase for any fan of this movie. You will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Another good score from Thomas Newman........2006-11-07

Thomas Newman is becoming quite the composer. He has such a unique style, but is able to use it to compliment the movies he scores without the music sounding out of place or out of period. The tracks "Turtle" and "Pugilism" are fun to listen to. The first track is short and yet somehow moving. There are enough songs from the period to lend the right flavor to the soundtrack (including a track of Paul Giamatti whistling "Londonderry Air"). This one's definitely worth having if you're a fan of Thomas Newman.

5 out of 5 stars Very nice.......2006-08-03

I suppose this would have been better, like another reviewer said, if some of the tracks had been more than minute-long cuts of the music from Cinderella Man. Still, it's a fantastic soundtrack!--I don't know what "conventional" meant when someone called it that, but if you like sad and somber music, you'll certainly like this. Try it. It's almost better than the movie itself, and the movie was great. After this, I have to hear Thomas Newman's other work.

3 out of 5 stars Why..........2006-07-11

I dearly loved the movie, "Cinderella Man," and the music in it. However, why on earth, on the CD, did they play only a minute, or less, of some of the best music? Like, "Hope of the Irish," I liked that so much, but 52 seconds dosn't do it. In the film it was at least 3 minutes or more. I have decided not to buy the soundtrack simply because of this.

3 out of 5 stars A fairly conventional score for Thomas Newman, but enjoyable nonetheless.......2006-03-25

Cinderella Man is, in a way, a return to conventional scoring for Thomas Newman. For a long while we've heard world instruments and percussion banging it out before stopping to allow beautiful themes to grasp our souls, but in Cinderella Man the effort is more restrained. It is largely a score for piano and strings, and fans of Thomas Newman will have heard the sound before. But, all the same, it is an enjoyable score for Newman fans of both kinds, and while it does take a while to get into a full expression of the story, it is definitely worth the wait.

The piano is used a lot in the score, making appearances across most of the tracks, including the gentle "The Inside Out" or in "Mae", appear with the delicate strings that we have come to expect from Newman. "Pugilism" makes use of pizzicato movements, whereas the two Irish influenced tracks, "Hope of the Irish" and "Turtle", bring back some more unconventional instruments as one would expect. But largely, the score meanders in the background, establishing a delicate tone and texture, but never really taking a forefront. Of course, I must make mention of the wonderful "Weehawken Ferry", which presents a crisp walking movement of strings, similar to what was heard in Shawshank Redemption. However, it is not until the final few tracks that the music finally free's itself from it's subdued nature and reaches out. "Big Right" explodes with blaring french horns and sharp strings, until it finally fades off and allows the highlight track, "Cinderella Man", to come in. This track is Newman at his best, with his typical soaring string arrangement of the main theme introduced in "The Inside Out", before finally reverting back to quiet woodwinds and piano near the end.

Cinderella Man is by no means an innovative or groundbreaking score - it's a fairly conventional drama score. The same adjectives could be applied to the movie as well. Is it worth the pick-up? Definitely, if you are looking for more Newman goodness. However, if you're looking to get into the world of Newman with a more colorful score - try "Angels in America" or "Road to Perdition".

4 out of 5 stars Warr beyond the Pale.......2003-12-03

As the Crimson King reassembles with Tony Levin (can Bill Bruford be far away?), and Trey Gunn's ambivalence about pursuing the mission of the Court hangs in the balance, Gunn has released this reassessment of his solo work. It os absolutely genius, start to finish. The most qualified successor to Robert Fripp's guitar chair currently is weighing the worthiness of the pursuit of a career as a touring musician. More would be the pity were he to stop, remove himself from Crimson and take up something essentially shackled to production only. If you have ever had the chance to see him solo or with Kc, you know he is one of the most engaging artists in the confidence of Music itself. If you have not seen him, hasten to pick this up along with the double DVD from King Crimson. As noted in another review, the packaging itself is stunningly beautiful, the music comes from deep inside a remarkable soul.
As to this disc, it opens with the acoustically driven polyrythmic "Sozzle" and then offers a Live reading of "The Glove," before bringing up 2 alternative mixes: "Third Star" (with an absolutely chilling vocal by Serpentine) and "Take This Wish," both of which turn the facets of these gems just enough to reconsider them thoroughly. Gunn's Warr work throughout is sublime. His colleagues are absoultely in step with his hairpin turns. Bob Muller, Tony Geballe and Joe Mendelson could give KC a run for its many on any given Sunday, understanding, of course, that both Geballe and Gunn are products of the Guitar Craft School of Thought espoused by Fripp at Charlestown, W Va.
Track 3 offers the contrast that his work with Pat Mastellotto represents. It's a different, yet sympathetic feel for the directions in the music. The Cd concludes with a workout with Fripp and Bill Rieflin, currently in the studio with REM ( and hopefully for REM's sake, permanently a member of that band). It is from an absolutely terrific vehicle they collaborated on during the ProjeKct hiatus of Crimson, and actually, along with Bruford-Levin, the best of said efforts.
The second disc is a DVD compilation whose 7 live tracks with Gunn, Geballe, Mendelson and Muller are just great. The video montages and interviews are a mixed bag, but so they should be. It gives a twist to the proceedings you won't always embrace, but are certainly more user friendly than Fripp's detachment.
So, whither Crimson? There is always the issue of unfinished businees for the double trio, and perhaps the time and independence established by Bruford, Levin, Mastellotto and Gunn would argue most for another run at a concept attempted by Coltrane and Ornette with as much unsaid as Crimson. Fripp continues to point to a life for the King beyond his service as Prime Minister. Perhaps now at the Gate of Dreams.......

5 out of 5 stars The Very Best from Trey Gunn........2003-11-25

"Untune the Sky" is a well-put-together compilation from the now former King Crimson member Trey Gunn (As of November 21st 2003, Trey has announced his departure from the band after 10 years). Gunn is a pioneer of the Touch Guitar and Chapman Stick. Both instruments utilize a playing technique of two-handed tapping as opposed to plucking or strumming the strings. During the past decade, Trey Gunn has brought out the full potential of what these unique instruments are capable of.
In addition to his work with King Crimson, Gunn has so far released five solo albums as well as numerous collaborations. It is these solo albums which "Untune The Sky" represents plus one track from his collaboration with drummer Bill Rieflin and Crimson bandmate/guitarist Robert Fripp, "The Repercussions of Angelic Behavior".
The sound in which Trey employs on his solo work is a unique mix of jazz fusion, world music and ambient styles. The percussiveness of Trey's string-tapping and Bob Muller's natural talent on the drums and Indian tabla is crucial to the overall sound of many of the tracks on this album. The vocals of the mysteriously named Alice and Serpentine on several tracks give a definite Eastern quality to some of this music.
Highlights include the highly rhythmic "Sozzle", "The Glove", "Rune Song", and the epics "Puttin on the White Shirt" and the unreleased track "The Cruelest Month".
"Untune The Sky" also comes with a full-length DVD which includes over 90-minutes worth of live material, behind-the-scenes footage and video montages from Trey Gunn and his band. It is quite an eyeful to watch Trey's touch guitar playing in full action here. His band consisting of drummer/percussionist Bob Muller, guitarist Tony Geballe and second Touch guitarist Joe Mendelson also display some worthy musicianship. Besides its stellar musical moments, there are also some humorous moments in the behind-the-scenes footage such as Trey being too busy for an interview while setting up on-stage and Tony Geballe telling the story behind his 12-string guitar getting broken in transit.
This is a great CD/DVD set. The CD provides an excellent sampling of Trey Gunn's solo material while the DVD shows some flawless playing from Trey and his band. With Gunn now departed from King Crimson, I can only hope that this will be the beginning of an even more prolific and fruitful solo career for him.

4 out of 5 stars Warr and Pieces.......2003-11-25

This audio/visual overview of TG's solo work is quite nice, from the artwork to the superior sound. The initiated will already own most if not all of these tracks (excepting the unreleased sound field "The Cruellest Month"). It's a rather strange track selection, omitting a few of what I considered to be essential pieces by Gunn and his cohorts, but part of the appeal of this set is seeing how Trey himself has decided to sum up his solo works to date.

TG's rhythmic partnership with Bob Muller is astounding. Muller is an amazing percussionist and quite invaluable to much of this music. Combining conventional trap kit with various hand drums, he sets his own high standard for creative rock percussion work. Now that Trey has left King Crimson (a good move, in my opinion), perhaps he and Muller can continue down the pan-ethnic, polyrhythmic path they started.

The DVD is of mixed quality, ranging from barely-audible band member interviews to handheld club footage to well-produced live footage (Kuma, Rune Song) to video "montages" for 4 tracks. (Think Stargate sequence from 2001 and you're in the ballpark.) I'm not of the opinion that music needs any video supplementation at all, but getting to see Muller & Gunn in action was worth the price of admission, certainly.

Recommended to both newcomers and "old" fans alike.

Album Description

Features songs from two hit Broadway shows by Howard Dietz and Arthur Schwartz starring Fred Astaire, Perry Como and more. Inside U.S.A. was recorded before the show was fully cast in order to beat the 1948 ASCAP strike, which explains why non-cast members performed some of these songs. Most tracks on CD for the first time!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great material on both scores.......2005-09-16

"Inside U.S.A." was a huge hit revue with the unique Bea Lillie, Jack Haley of "The Wizard of Oz" and such future names as Carl Reiner (not on the recordings). "Atlanta" was apparently cut as it doesn't appear in any programs of the show, and it is revue material with topical references so younger Broadway fans may wonder what the hell Bea is singing about (Atlanta was known for it's federal prison, imagine her in a neat striped suit and matching pillbox hat with a ball and chain to twirl), but her spirit was perhaps as well captured on these tracks as it ever was in a studio recording. "The Bandwagon" is also wonderful, Fred Astaire at his stage height just before he went Hollywood (with his sister Adele, a bigger star then), and a pioneer recording that was LP length before that existed. All the material by Dietz and Schwartz in it is classic and showed up in the very different film 25 years later. But these recordings may be better, and the sound is brilliant for the time. So, a bargain and let's hope the trove of theater recordings continues to be mined - how about all the Decca recordings of Bea, including the unreleased 60s recordings as well as the two lps from her legendary "Evening with Beatrice Lillie"? (See the Joyce Grenfell "Requests" recent CD for a handfull of the Decca material, beautifully remastered as bonus cuts).

Album Description

"Birds Falling from the Sky" is an 18 track album by Seattle performance and recording project The Harmonica Pocket. Released in August 2005, the record is an eclectic, unpredicable tally of genre-crossing tunes.

From the experimental opening soundscape "last night i saw" into "earth over air" a folk-reggae track spliced with voicemail excerpts; OR from the lo-fi record player blues on "bag of never" to the beatlesque epic pop song "the stars are all out," song after song the Harmonica Pocket consistently takes musical risks and effortlessly colors outside the lines of commerical music.

5 out of 5 stars Fun Fun Fun.......2007-03-30

Unlike hundreds of todays upcoming artisits, Harmonica Pocket goes off the typical boring path of making each song on an album sound like the one before and after it. The fun combination of sounds, instruments and lyrics makes each song on the album totally different from another. Imagine that! It is so refreshing to hear truly NEW music. Lemonbomb might just be the best song ever for driving to work in the morning, cooking dinner or even waking up to! Pocketful... AAHHHH great song.
KUDOS!

4 out of 5 stars Unique and Creative.......2006-10-15

With some independently released albums including a very charming one for children, The Harmonica Pocket brings a lot of heart to their music; which in my dumb opinion more than few major label artists seem to lack. I can't help but feel a little happier while I'm listening to this cd.

The songs, lyrics, vocals are all very original and creative. I'd be hard pressed to pick the best but my personal favorites are Earth Over Air, Drive, Float/Fall, and See Ya Maria. [...]

Anyway, I honestly can't think of anything I'd fault or criticise this album on. There's two cds worth of songs here and nearly all of them are good so give them a chance.

4 out of 5 stars Love Spirituality Drugs.......2005-01-17

Laughing Sky was a retro 3 piece psychedelic underground band from NYC. They had a loyal following for a couple of years which culminated in this album of uptempo psychedelic garage punk acid dance rock. A change in bass players enabled the music to live another year and morph to even more uncharted sonic noise, experimental jams, and mind tripping, joyfully leaving their live audiences with a more progressive, psychedelic experience. There are some great songs on this CD about drugs, aliens, love, spirituality and drugs. I took off one star because they were better live than on record, but get it anyway. At 4 bucks used, you can't lose. There are bootlegs available if you know the right people.

4 out of 5 stars Good Start For A Great Artist!.......1999-02-13

This is a good cd to listen to for relaxing, yet it won't put you to sleep. Steve has a talent for writing pretty melodies. "Victory" is a simple yet pleasing song; he developed a more lenghthy and viverant version of it for his 'Bolder Boulder' cd. My favorite tracks are "Victory, Seperate Ways, Begining Again, Change Of Seasons, In Another Time". The only track I don't care for "Journey Through The Night"; yet, it features sounds of a train using instruments; which is a creative touch. Piano, flute, drums, chimes, are featured on the cd. Indeed, Steve's music is relaxing, melodic, warming, refreshing, and cheerful, not spacy or weird.

4 out of 5 stars This music is ver y relaxing; conjures feelings of hope........1998-11-22

His music is a combination of various contemporary soft instruments, including the piano, synthesizer, flute, clarinet, etc. I listen to Steve's music to get my R&R; rest and relaxation; his music conjures up feeling of hope and resolution and peace. As a friend during his high school days, I recall this gifted person share his life experience through his music as a gift. This is a musical testament to the effects of being brought up in one of the most beautiful enclaves of natural beauty (Boulder, Colorado) and human society's participation in it; his music is a reflection of that participation; a gifted artist shares his heart to the world.

3 out of 5 stars He knows the score.......2003-03-16

Considering what this is --- 47 soundtrack snippets in 74 minutes --- I'm surprised it's so good. Most of the tracks are *pieces* of songs, so you'd expect to get a little lost. But Wayne Horvitz writes and plays in a consistent way. He's sort of a 21st century Burt Bacharach, relying on simple melodies and a touch of classy eccentricity to create a unique musical signature.

This isn't an essential Wayne Horvitz album, but once you've heard it 3 or 4 times, you'll be happy it's in your collection.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful themes, in miniature........2002-10-08

This was a pleasant surprise. Unlike some of the film scores on the Tzadik label, Wayne Horvitz's cues work very well as stand-alone pieces. There is a tremendous diversity here, and Horvitz takes good advantage of sidemen such as Bill Frisell. To my surprise, I have found this to be one of my favorite Wayne Horvitz projects.
