The films of director Zhang Yimou have a panoramic sweep to them that deftly creates a fantastical vision of ancient Chinese culture for the screen. Yimou's eye for color and sense of drama demands a score that conveys the emotion, tradition and action of his movies. Here Shigeru Umebayashi tells each part of the story with a mix of traditional flute, drums, string instruments and, to a lesser degree, orchestra and moody-sounding synthesizers. The lilting melody of "Lovers" is particularly effective, simmering with a passion that leaves no doubt about the tone of the scene; it comes back to dramatic effect at other times in the film as well--the soundtrack closes with a soaring version of it by soprano Kathleen Battle. Similar to but not as heavy as Tan Dun's occasionally overbearing work on Yimou's film Hero, Umebayashi leans toward the subtle for this love story, and the film is better for it. - Tad Hendrickson

I truly enjoy this CD. The music is enchanting, emotion-evoking, and powerful. I love to listen to it in order to relax before going to bed. I recommend this CD to anyone.

A gorgeous film score.......2006-09-24

"House of Flying Daggers" is one of my favorite Asian films from the past five years. One of the main reasons I love the film is the sumptuous classical film score by Shigeru Umebayashi. The classical score reminded me a great deal of the score for "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon". The operatic ballad by Kathleen Battle is stunning. I don't normally like most opera music but I definitely enjoyed listening to Kathleen Battle. This is a lovely cd to relax to with a hot cup of tea and a good book.

GREAT MUSIC........2006-05-18

Not only was House of Flying Daggers a wonderful movie, but the music was breathtaking. If for no other reason purchase the CD and enjoy Kathleen Battle's rendition of Lovers.

Never Gets Boring.......2005-12-25

This album has everything good music needs. It's driving, subtle, powerful and soft. It is a truly amazing work of art. It gets the emotions of the characters and the events of the story out perfectly. A ballet could be performed to this score.

Bamboo....take me away!.......2004-06-16

This album is just what it says it is: Recordings of a bamboo forest complete with birdsong, trickling water, breezes, and peeping frogs. There is NO annoying music! However, the sound of what I think is bamboo waving in the breeze is also on the recording. I actually love it because it's a gentle creaking sound, like trees creaking in the wind, but some may find it a bit annoying.
If you're looking for rainforest sounds without irritating synthesizer music, this is the CD for you. I wish I'd found this CD when I first started looking for a recording of rainforest sounds.

I bought this CD based on customer reviews, There was one that says "the music puts you in special places per track.". I bought this cd, put in my player and found myself walking hand-in-hand with the one i love in the tropics..

If you do buy, you'll feel it too, it can't be explained.. I surely would be getting the rest of Steve Reid's releases.

Pleasure Island Revisted.......2000-04-26

We first heard Steve Reid at Pleasure Island in Orlando, Fl in April of 97..what a great group...what different sounds...I had been searching for a recording of his since...and hit the search at this site...and now I can enjoy it every day...I am now going to order the 1999 release and the one from 97 which he was promoting that night..thanks..Amazon!

I bought this CD long ago on a whim and I'm afraid I am going to wear it out! I listen to this CD nonstop! It is relaxing, entertaining and pleasing to the ears. Now I'm in the process of buying all of Steve Reid's work! This also makes great background music when I have company over and I get a lot of great feedback on it. You truly feel you are in a bamboo forest! I am only curious about one thing now....I would like to see him in concert want to know if he has a website!

WOW! I know Steve's work from the Rippington's and I have never seen a more enthusiastic musician. But this solo effort is truly outstanding. Steve takes you on safari and into the rain forest and leaves you wanting to continue the journey.

Love the CD. However, you have got to see these guys perform live. They put on a great show - both for the ears and the eyes.

OK, yes, I like the music, and yes I like the arrangements on the CD, but I am still searching for the feeling I got when I heard Bamboo Forest. Mysteries has more singing on it than I would have liked, but over all it is composed rather nicely. I am going to keep trying and buy the rest of Steve Reid's CD's in hopes that they are less jazzy, have more percussion and of course the feeling attached that you are totally relaxed and in a forest.Don't get me wrong, this is pure talent you're listening to, especially if you're looking for jazz, but it wasn't my fave.

Where is everyone? Don't you like Jeff Kashiwa and Steve Reid? Anyways, I like the impressions of mysteries on this CD. It definitely deserves to be part of a true jazz fans collection.
