Amazon.com essential recording
Nine Inch Nails are a pretty amazing phenomenon when one considers what they--um, he--have done with just a few studio recordings. The Downward Spiral, NIN's second full-length album, is just as packed with vitriol as Pretty Hate Machine and the EP Broken--and has just as solid a base of pop hooks that go a long way toward explaining NIN's popularity. Most recognizable is the down-tempo single "Closer," which remains a staple of dance clubs everywhere. But for the most part, the album is all heavy beats and aggressive guitars--industrial music with a pop angle. That winning combination is what makes Trent Reznor a law unto himself, becoming insanely popular while the main body of industrial music retains its subculture status. --Genevieve WilliamsAmazon.com
It's easy to understand why Nine Inch Nails became the industrial band to break out of the techno ghetto and win a larger audience. Trent Reznor, who records the NIN albums almost entirely by himself (although he tours with a full band), tries very hard to pass himself off as an angry young man, but underneath the angst-ridden lyrics, pounding synths, and grating guitars is an irrepressible pop sensibility. On the second full-length NIN album, The Downward Spiral, Reznor builds his constructions of noise and gloom around warm, fuzzy melodies. On the album's first single, "March of the Pigs," for example, Reznor screams about swine lined up for slaughter amid guitars screeching in pain. Suddenly the guitars fall away to reveal the sensually throbbing rhythm track below; then that falls away to reveal a vocal-and-piano track that's as catchy as anything by Elton John. Because Reznor has a better handle on dynamics now, the melodic core is more obvious than ever. --Geoffrey HimesCustomer Reviews:

Luxurious Listning.......2006-12-22
Some how it seems the music melds back onto and into itself, making it's own simple elegant Flamenco symphony. It is clean, clear, smooth and immaculate. I found it most beneficial to leave it playing 24 hours a day in my room, while traveling, to think and dream by...very luxurious and healing to the senses. I find Ottmar Liebert to be an Artist worthy of the highest praise. Salute Sir! Only one thing would be more of a privilege to listen to, and that would be ~One Guitar~ in live Concert!

Ottmar Liebert - "One Guitar".......2006-12-05
This is an enchanting album...classic flamenco performed by the world's finest flamenco player. As an interesting aside, Ottmat Liebert is also quite an accomplished photographer. He ran a slide show with a random selection of his vast library of photos at the concert. It came off beautifully. If you ever get the chance to see him perform live, GO! If not, this album is about as good as flamenco gets!
Cheers,

Yet it also rewards closer listening. The lovely, lilting harp lines will stay in your system for a long time.
Another thing I like about this cd is that the melodies are not repetitive. Each song has its own sound. It is the perfect gift to get for someone who is looking for music to play at work or at home while relaxing.
It is also one of the few albums I have that my wife will let me play at night while she is trying to sleep!

Customer Reviews:
The most important album yet made........2007-07-04
Not a masterpiece, and Reznor himself has outgrown it........2007-04-16
On the plus side, the music on The Downward Spiral is more varied than anyone ever gave Reznor credit for. Everybody copied the loud angry parts (Rammstein stole the riff for "Du Hast" right from the end of "Eraser"), but Reznor could also occasionally pause and reflect, as in the ambient instrumental "A Warm Place," and he also put all kinds of sudden changes and about-faces even into the heavy songs. The loud/soft dynamic gets abused a lot in this album, starting with the opening track, where the loud guitars abruptly give way to an extremely quiet interlude after the second chorus. But occasionally there's a bit more subtlety than that. In "The Becoming" for instance, an angry chorus suddenly turns into a rhythm on an acoustic guitar with multi-tracked chanting in the background, and then Reznor's voice comes back in and quickly gets distorted even more than before.
Occasionally, Reznor dipped into other electronic styles. "Piggy" could pass for a song by Tricky, with a vaguely jazzy rhythm produced to sound claustrophobic and dangerous. "Closer" is built on a tight house beat, and "Heresy" is KMFDM-style techno, with sound effects similar to those in "Lust" and guitars like in "Juke Joint Jezebel," and a screaming chorus not unlike what Sascha K always does. "The Downward Spiral" is a queasily off-key near-instrumental with all kind of spooky noises mixed into the ambience, much like what Aphex Twin did on occasion. The production doesn't sound dated at all. Musically, this album is a great improvement over Pretty Hate Machine.
Nonetheless, all these examples are exceptions to the rule, and do not really represent the vast majority of the album, which is more than one hour long. In the second half, the music begins to sound flat. The beats are loud and aggressive, and yet somewhat awkward. Except for "Heresy" and "Closer," these songs don't have the sense of propulsive energy and motion that one finds in really good electronic music (even in industrial music, like KMFDM's "Naive"). After "Closer," a lot of The Downward Spiral consists of grinding, hook-less sludge. Even Reznor's vocals, which are arranged into catchy rhythms in the first half, become more formless in the second half. The rhythms slacken, and it often feels like he's just screaming irregularly over a loud but senseless pile of noise. Maybe each individual song isn't bad, but it's a bit tiresome to listen to the whole album from beginning to end.
The other big drawback of the album is that, even though the music can be detailed and sophisticated, Reznor's vocal delivery has no subtlety whatsoever. He has only two settings -- almost inaudible whispering, and unhinged screaming -- and he goes back and forth between them over and over with very little variation. This really takes a lot out of the shifts in the music, and it often prevents the lyrics from making any impression whatsoever. The worst offender is probably "I Do Not Want This." First Trent screams, "Don't you tell me how I feel!" The louder he screams this line, the more it sounds like a seventh-grader's temper tantrum. Furthermore, the "I want to know everything / I want to be everywhere" bit at the end of that same song could only have an emotional impact if it were made to sound desperate and longing. But Reznor just screams these lines, making them sound petulant and boring.
Similarly, the chorus in "Heresy" might have been impressive if he had delivered it with a confident, En-Esch-like swagger (like in "Die Now, Live Later"), but instead he screams it yet again. Upon hearing it, one can't help but notice what an easy target Reznor chose. Even in 1994, there was nothing controversial about "Heresy." It was certain to offend the usual people and invite some finger-wagging from the usual talking heads, but Reznor was never in any danger of becoming a pariah or losing his record contract over this song. On the contrary, there's even something safe about the way this album depicts only personal emotions, which may be directed at some abstract entity but never at any specific event. In that sense, his latest album Year Zero takes more risks.
Reznor does a better job on "Hurt," but even at his most vulnerable he's lacking in dramatic restraint. Johnny Cash got more out of this song by emoting less. And Reznor himself became a much better singer later on. On Year Zero, his vocal performances are far superior to what he displays on The Downward Spiral. These days he sounds much more confident, relies much less on screaming, and writes about something other than his own emotions. In some sense, The Downward Spiral finds him at his weakest. His angry snarling was effective on Pretty Hate Machine, because he was singing from the point of view of a disillusioned, but fairly ordinary young man who has to go to work every day and wants to make out with pretty girls. But on this album, he's attempting to recast himself as a suffering poet and artist rather than as an ordinary man, and it's really not all that convincing. Even though this kind of narcissism appeals to angry teenagers.
So, there you have it. This was a creative and even unconventional album when it came out. However, it has severe limitations, mostly thematic rather than musical. Reznor himself doesn't make music like this anymore, and it's probably for the better.
Down The Spiral Forever (Let's Clear A Few Things Up).......2007-04-04
The best place to listen to the album is on your headphones connected to a home stereo during an electrical storm.
I own the DualDisc and the SACD, which one is better?.......2006-12-08
I will say that whether you're listening to the Dolby Digital 5.1, the 24/48 5.1 or the SACD 5.1, you're in for a treat. Trent Reznor and James Brown have really done an amazing job with this surround mix. The last minute of closer where a razor sounding blast comes 360 degress around your head will just make you smile.
If you're listening with your eyes closed you'll swear the room is moving around you.
The best news that I was so pleased to discover is that the second disc is SACD stereo! I never knew this before. Getting all the great remixes as well as such sweet tracks as Joy Division's Memorabilia and Dead Souls and NIN's Burn in SACD stereo is worth the price alone.
Great disc, looking forward to The Fragile - I hope it receives the same treatment as this disc did.
Please Trent get Pretty Hate Machine back and give us a Deluxe SACD edition as well. It's too good to miss.
I speak religion's message clear ... and I control you!.......2006-10-28
Also, as a side note about this release, the second cd makes the extra expense worth it. Not only has the music been remastered, but there is a 13 track cd available only on this release that includes rare tracks, demos, and other songs previously only available on movie soundtracks. I sold my original cd and bought this release, and have no regreats. This is the definitly the version to buy.

I must be missing something here, Trent's "Pretty Hate Machine" is far better than this noisy junk.......2007-07-12
On this album, I like "Mr. Self Destruct". It's an easy song to get stuck in your head, plus the EP of "Further Down the Spiral" has a couple of good remixes of that song.
"Piggy. Pig, pig, pig..." "Nothing can stop me now." What does that mean? Is Trent into bopping animals or something? The song doesn't seem to make any sense that I can figure out.
"Heresy" is a song I could do without. I'm not the most religious guy out there. However I do believe in God. But I don't practice any religion. Since there are so many different interpretations of what God is, how can anyone see the authenticity of any one religion?
"March of the Pigs" mentions pigs again. Again, what's the reference here?
"Closer" is my favorite track here. However, I hope Trent's not talking about his warped love for pigs.
The rest of this album just seems to mix up hard noise and then depressing melancholy moods backed up by strange instrumental passages. Most of the instrumentation on this album is strange. He doesn't play many ordinary instruments, and his more electronic sounds are obscure to me, and I usually enjoy variations of IDM and industrial instrumentals.
I bought this album when it came out back in 1994. I hated it back then and gave it away. I decided to buy it again to see if I've missed something. But no, it's the same album I was uncomfortable with as before. I like "Further Down the Spiral" better than this album. If "Further Down the Spiral" had "Closer" on it, that would be a fantastic album. So, I guess I'll just keep both.

Working Classical might just be the perfect outlet for the composing skills of Sir Paul McCartney. Here, the former Beatles (and, let's not forget, Wings) member scales things down from his previous classical-music endeavors--the overweight works Liverpool Oratorio and Standing Stone. In the hands of the Loma Mar Quartet chamber group and the London Symphony Orchestra, McCartney's shorter compositions sound all the more intimate (and effective). Album opener "Junk" is a simple waltz dating from the composer's days with the Fab Four, performed here by the Quartet with short-but-sweet results. "A Leaf" is another waltz motif, this one performed with a full orchestra. McCartney pop favorites "Warm and Beautiful," "Somedays," "She's My Baby," and "The Lovely Linda" all get chamber-music treatments that bring out their compositional beauty. And, while influences seem to range from Janácek to Morricone, there's no doubting that McCartney knows how to write a convincing ditty--pop or otherwise. --Jason VerlindeCustomer Reviews:
nice string music.......2007-07-13
Macca continues to amaze. As Ringo said in reference to "Let it Be...Naked":"(Paul) ,You were right all along."
I think when the history is written many years from now, it'll be seen that while John Lennon was the heart of the Beatles,Paul McCartney was their musical brain. I feel Mac will stand tall with other notable composers from the Western musical tradition.
AS soon as the classical snobs make themselves admit it.
Melodically,Mac can't be beat.
W/out Mac,there would've not been the Beatles as we know them today.
This CD is well worth buying.
Perfect Format to Present Paul's Genius.......2006-11-20
I have just listened to the broadcast of Paul's most recent classical work Ecce Cor Meum from Carnegie Hall in New York (Nov. 14, 2006) and prior to the main piece, the soprano Kate Royal and another vocalist sang these songs accompanied by the same quartet that appears on Working Classical. It was essentially a live version of this album with vocals and it was brilliant as is the original Working Classical CD. My Love, Warm and Beautiful, Calico Skies and Junk come off as extraordinarily brillant as they do on this recording. These songs, whether in this form or closer to their original form, will live forever and no amount of "orchestration" can kill them.
The same reviewer wrote: "it is a sign of the decline of serious culture that so many people actually believe that this MUZAK is classical music". How pompous some classical music fans are that they cannot conceive of any important music being written in modern times. Another reviewer wrote: "an orchestrated pop song is still a pop song". Perhaps, but that is not a fatal critcism that would obviate the joy these melodies give and emotions they hold. On the contrary, this is not elevator music. Elevator music is not compelling, its not memorble and its not written by a genius named Paul McCartney.
If you were to take a sonata by a well-known classical composer and play it among 'elevator music' with an overblown song like "Feelings", for example, would that turn it into elevator music? The discerning among us know the difference. An orchestrated pop song is not just MUZAK. That is just simple-minded. This idea comes from John Lennon's song "How Do You Sleep?" during which he idenifies Paul's music as MUZAK. John later denounced and rejected the sentiments of that song.
It turns out Paul is the coolest Beatle because he is the least affected, the least afraid to worry about what people would think about his doing something like this recording. He is not worried about the posturing associated with the tough guy rock and roll image. He is first and foremost an artist and musician--one of rare quality and talent.
This is NOT classical music.......2006-11-07
one of my favoirte cds.......2006-08-05
Is it possible to wear out a CD?.......2006-03-26
His music possesses a gentle whimsy and include orchestral or chamber versions of some of his recognizable songs such as "Junk," "My Love" and "Maybe I'm Amazed."
I'd read all the reviews and have included a snippet from one which I am happy to share... this just says it all...
Gerald R Steele
"An extension of an event, begun in the sixties, called, "The Beatles", Paul McCartney has confirmed the importance of the original Phenomena. Some of us realized that from "I Want to Hold Your Hand" a culmination of music, from Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Gershwin, and Vaughn-Williams, was emerging.
One can only hope for more. This tribute to Linda may begin something that will reference a "pop-culture" that included "The Beatles" as the beginning to music that truly responds to "the inner-ear" of, at least, three generations. This is the stuff that lives for thousands of years." Thank you Gerald. Imagine, touching the hearts of THREE generations?
My own love for this album is enhanced by my friendships as I compare my feelings, during listening, to them. A dear friend, Linda, rides her mechanical steed every morning and I think of her as I listen to "The Lovely Linda". I can see her in the morning dawn, peddling along and enjoying the morning and life. "Calico Skies" is reminiscent of all my Mitford pals! So dignified and serene! I'll probably wear out this CD from playing it so much.

Best of the remix CDs.......2007-01-07
Halo 10 "Further Down the Spiral" is probably the most popular NIN remix CD as it was released during Trent Reznor's commercial and critical pinnacle, following the release of his masterpiece "The Downward Spiral" (1994).
NIN remix albums in general are usually a mixed bag. While the Halo collector may want to collect all the singles/remix CDs just for the sake of owning a complete Halo collection, and while some hard-core fans may relish everything Trent Reznor has to offer, other, more casual fans may not be interested in remix albums. "Further Down the Spiral" is really the one NIN remix album that I would recommend to hard-core and casual fans alike.
If you are expecting to hear something like "Closer" or "Head like a Hole," something with an infectious hook, "Further Down the Spiral" is most likely not going to satisfy you. But "Further Down the Spiral" has something else to offer--some of the most atmospheric, captivating music you will ever hear. While some music is just something to listen to in the background, "Further Down the Spiral" creates an aura of eerie serenity, that is paradoxically disturbing. Unlike "The Downward Spiral" it doesn't assault the senses, rather it takes hold of the listener more subtly. It's a CD to listen to in the dark when no one else is around, a CD to lose yourself in.
If you already own "The Downward Spiral," "Further Down the Spiral" is an excellent choice to purchase as a companion. If you are just a casual fan and are on the fence about what remix CDs to buy, I would recommend "Further Down the Spiral" as your first choice. If you are going to pick up any of the remix albums at all, stick with this.
Non-white noise.......2006-12-20
Songs that go from semi-music to irritating noise and last four times as long as one can abide, while "playing" the same thing over and over and ...well, you get my drift.
If great music is your thing, pass this one up. Or write me a note and tell me why on earth such a great group would release such an abomination.
Amazing.......2006-07-14
The coherence comes from the skillful arrangement of four remixes of one particular song - "Mr. Self Destruct" - with three remixes of "Eraser" providing a secondary theme. The "Mr. Self Destruct" songs are the four pillars that give the album its structure. They are like the four acts of an archetypal story: Introduction, Development, Crisis, and Resolution. The "Eraser" variations counterpoint them, with the other songs elaborating on various aspects of the central idea: the downward spiral of addiction.
"Piggy (Nothing Can Stop Me Now)" kicks off the proceedings, with a version more carnal than the original. Women moan in the background, creating a sensual soundscape punctuated by a techno-inspired version of the chorus that sounds like reckless indulgence. The emerging rave beat is a good aural metaphor for what could be an ecstasy-soaked night of sexual abandon. The pigs are definitley marching.
Our introduction to the world of addiction continues with "The Art of Self Destruction, Part One" - the first of the "Self Destruction" variants. It begins with an insinuating sonic pulse and whispered lyrics that could be a death wish personified, lulling you to the edge of the abyss. The phrase "I control you" repeats as it builds to a crescendo.
"Self Destruction, Part Two" meets the crescendo with an unexpected explosion of blues guitar work that vaguely echos another famous rock song about pigs. But the industrial elements (rhythmic freight elevators, pounding percussion, a chorus of heavy machinery) take it into another realm entirely. Contrasting quiet passages enter with a sampled orchestral violin section to really mix things up (!)
"The Downward Spiral (The Bottom)", Reznor's ode to suicide, is a journey into the netherworld of eerie, ambient sounds, backed by a slow, halting version of a recurring melodic figure from "Closer" (which does not otherwise appear on this album, instead being reserved for its own collection of remixes). We're fully into the development section, now, exploring the self-destructive side of addiction - the "moth-drawn-to-the-flame" aspect, which is further elaborated in "Hurt." This version sounds almost identical to its original counterpart, but with cleaner guitar and vocal lines. The flame in this case is heroin, to which the song's protagonist (and Reznor himself, at one point) suffers an addiction. A mournful ballad full of regret and helplessness, "Hurt" was powerfully interpreted by Johnny Cash toward the end of his life. It's a great song - haunting, sad, and beautiful all at once.
Enter "Further Down the Spiral's" major counter-theme with the first variation on "Eraser", called "Eraser (Denial, Realization)." If Mr. Self Destruct is a personification of addiction, then Eraser is a personification of that to which one is addicted - the Bad Thing that gives you pleasure and works to destroy you at the same time. This first introduction of Eraser literally sounds like a machine getting up to speed before bursting to life with a heavy rhythm guitar backed by drawn-out screams of "Help me!". No actual lyrics are present; just a malevolent presence bringing suffering and putrefaction.
An interlude is next, an instrumental called "At the Heart of it All" - pure industrial goodness, all rhythmic clanking and compressed air hissing, with a sad synth pad underneath keeping a two-chord ostinato going.
The second "Eraser" remix follows, "Eraser (Polite)", which is quiet and matter-of fact, emphasizing the lyrics: "Need you, Dream you, Find you, Taste you/Use you, Scar you, F*** you, Break you."
Next, "Self Destruction, Final" sounds a bit like George Thorogood might if he switched from booze to speed. It's the true climax of the album, with a pounding industrial beat countered by bluesy guitar solos between bursts of frenzied lyrics. It oozes manic despair and brings the whole theme of self-destructive addiction to a head. Musically, it resembles the height of a "bad trip" - a savage, hallucinatory experience. Musically inventive, it manages to sustain itself for nearly ten minutes, building and building well past expectations, and never losing interest. It is my most often played track.
The denoument begins with "The Beauty of Being Numb." The title does not reference "Mr. Self Destruct", but the music certainly does. It begins with the groove from the previous song, but playing backwards at steadily increasing volume before abrubptly transitioning to something almost indescribable - an instrumental of loungy, muzak-like variations over a rhyhm track made up of pig grunts, electric buzzers, and some truly disgusting and very wet sounds, the origin of which I do not care to know. To me it sounds like the latter part of a drug-induced high giving way to nausea. The sounds of flies buzzing suggest the aromatic ferment of decay as the song draws to a close.
Finally, Eraser has the last say with "Erased, over. Out." If the prior track is a high turning into nausea, then this one is the sickness afterward - both the physical and mental torment of coming down and realizing you are completely helpless.
"Further Down the Spiral" is a lot more than a collection of variations on the themes of "The Downward Spiral"; it is an emotionally gripping journey of its own.
THE remix benchmark.......2006-05-26
And let me tell you: the people who rave about NIN remixes are telling the God-honest truth. For about the price of an EP, you get 9 very different remixes centered around five songs from The Downward Spiral, along with two completely new creations. Actually, the term "remix" could be considered inapplicable to this album - the songs are just that different from each other, even when they're centered around the same song.
"Piggy", "Self Destruction Part One" and the two Aphex Twin originals ("Heart Of It All" and "Beauty Of Being Numb") form the heart and soul of this album. They show exactly what one should do with a remix album: completely reinvent the track. The fact that this album succeeded, in an era where remixes were largely avoided, proves this. Even if you avoid remix albums like the plague, give this one a chance. It might just change your mind.

Hiromi- master of the groove........2006-02-15
I disliked that she played out of the harmony so much on this disc, but I can also appreciate how she makes the keyboard/piano almost talk...
Her music is moving, academic, and danceable.
To watch her on DVD is also very inspiring, ecspecially to piano players.
Hiromi has a very powerful spirit, and it shows. Buy this disc.

Not old enough or cool enough to remember it when it came out..........2006-02-07
Sure it's only ten minutes long, but it packs the whallop of an album. Absolutely worth every penny.

Time's Up!.......2002-08-05
This home made EP is simple, sardonic and just perfect. If you can, check out the 'Time's Up' album, originally only available on bootleg. They are both great examples of punk before it became a designer fashion and not forgetting the Buzzcocks' debts to the Troggs and Captain Beefheart.
As good as I remember........2001-05-12
Whatever, it's brilliant. Get it & get a strong whiff of the original AND best true punk movement at its genesis. Classy (and classic) stuff.
Classic EP available at last!.......2000-07-10
Well, I have just listened to Spiral Scratch and the wait was well worth it. The first chords of Breakdown immediately woke me up and within seconds I was dancing animatedly around my hotel room. The raw energy that was so typical of the early punk days came back to me and I was immediately immersed in the music. Devoto's voice has that edge that singers just do not have these days, and the sheer abandonment of the bands' music shines through.
Those that are not familiar with punk music should buy this EP and see why punk took off so quickly in the late 70s. Spiral Scratch is uncomplicated music, and is probably the best session that the Buzzcock's did in their career. The guitar riffs in Boredom have not lost their hypnotic lure over the years and really remain the sound most associated with the band.
The fact that the EP only has four tracks should not put people off. Any more tracks would have possibly diluted the music and the impact it made.
This is the definitive early punk CD and the Buzzcock's best work. Buy it now and reawaken your love of rock!
Badum, Badum!
