4 out of 5 stars "You Really Got Me" in 1976 and did it again on the CD!.......2007-06-30

As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various recordings from the 60's and 70's.

1976's "801 Live" sounds as fresh today as it did over thirty years remove. The tremendous progressive rock line-up of Phil Manzanera (Roxy Music)-guitar, Brian Eno (Roxy Music/Robert Fripp)-keyboards, Simon Phillips (Jack Bruce/The Who/The Best W/Keith Emerson)-drums, Lloyd Watson (Eno)-guitar and slide, Francis Monkman (Curved Air/Al Stewart)-keyboards, and Bill McCormick (Matching Mole)-bass, had a couple of ways to see the project come to fruition. They could have had the longer and more far-reaching compositions or display their brilliance in shorter well-structured and complex fashion. They decided to take the shorter road but equally impressive journey.

Their cover of the Beatles "Tomorrow Never Knows" is one of the most heralded in prog circles and there treatment of the Kinks "You Really Got Me" is stellar. "East Of Asteroid" is a blowtorch. The firepower being supplied by Manzanera's guitar and Phillips well conceived drum fills. "Rongwrong" is a flight into another atmosphere. The tune is hypnotic in both its music and direction. Phil Manzanera displays great tone and technical ability on his track "Diamond Head." Don't overlook the following track that he penned as well "Miss Shapiro." The band turns it up a notch and the energy is exceptional.

If you have previously explored the musical world of Simon Phillips and or Phil Manzanera, the CD will fit perfectly in your collection. What should satisfy the Eno fan is how he displays keyboard savvy outside of the ambient and avant-garde spectrums.

Enjoy the music and be well,
Craig Fenton

5 out of 5 stars History for listening to........2007-06-14

"801 Live" is simply the most important piece of vinyl ever offered on this planet. I won't go into Brian Eno and his early-to-mid-70s rockstyle work (he called it his 'idiot music'), all of which I admittedly love, I'll just say that this album, recorded live in a hall that seated about 6000 people, is the best engineered live rock-oriented album of all time; and that is damning it with faint praise, since it ignores the genius of the performances! I was about 14 when I first heard it and soon afterward discovered The Beatles -- who'd've thought that a British group that had broken up in 1970 had somehow 'covered' a Brian Eno song? Seriously, to this day I hear "Tomorrow Never Knows" the way I heard it first -- on this LP. Ditto the Kinks cover. And "Rongwrong" is surely the closest Brain One will ever come to doing his own version of "My Way". I want them to play it at my funeral.

5 out of 5 stars Even better after all these years!! .......2007-01-29

Damn that XM satellite radio! A few months ago I heard "MISS SHAPIRO" from the 801 LIVE album, and many long forgotten memories returned! I literally wore the album out in the late 70's from playing it so much! I was blown away to see it was available as a CD on Amazon.com. "T.N.K."
by far still the best version of it, the chaotic yet musical madness of "THIRD UNCLE",and the debate returns after many a year, Fripp's or Manzanera's guitar work better on "BABY'S ON FIRE" I say no question Fripp far better! Now let's see if I can wear out this CD!

5 out of 5 stars being there was better, but then you'd be as old as me.......2007-01-03

bill macCormick (bass)& simon phillips (drums) won't be the reason you purchase this disc, but they might be the reason you stay. this concert was held in a classical music hall and the acoustics were the best i have ever heard live. (trivia: i'm pretty sure elton john was in the audience.) some reviewers above have complained about eno, but he was clearly the driving force in this outfit, at least this night. mazanera once ran up the fretboard in a blazing solo, only to have it go through eno's modulators which inverted the solo (phil raised his eyebrows). and tnk IS worth the price of the cd (beatles? wrote good songs, but these folks could play!). third uncle was the encore (with you really got me?), uncle introduced by eno noting the next was the fastest song ever written (and an audience member yelled out third uncle, getting a smile from eno--lord, if i only remembered relationships like that night). so the only real question is: 801 live or june 1, 1974, which is better?

i'll admit to still listening to my vinyl version. and therein lies the rub. i don't remember the set list, but wasn't there more than is here on cd? anyone have the tapes?

5 out of 5 stars Incredibly Powerful Live Recording.......2006-09-24

I had previously listened to the recordings on this CD many years ago, but had forgotten about it until just recently, when I began looking for some really good, progressive rock to add to my collection. A must for anybody looking to add to the progressive rock segment of their catalog. Right up there with ELP's best stuff, King Crimson, The Nice, etc.

5 out of 5 stars Glenn Gould live... sensational !.......2006-02-23

Out of curiosity I bought this disc. I already own the 1955 and 1981 recording of the Goldberg variations, which are both legendary for good reason.
But then this recording! What a drive, what a rhythm! Compared to the 1955 recording, I feel it is somewhat more lyrical, some of the tempi are somewhat less extreme. The technical command and concentration are unbelievable. Well, I won't analyze it any more, you just HAVE TO listen to this disc!
The recording sound of the Goldberg variations is surprisingly good. The recording sound of the inventions is not so good, but I have heard worse.

5 out of 5 stars Much more than a curiosity.......2006-01-09

[Full disclosure: I either have, or at various times have had this title listed in the Marketplace.]
I had this recording on the shelf a long time before I got around to listening to it. On either side was Gould's 1955 recording of the Goldberg Variations and the 1981 recording, like neat bookends to his career. Those two are substantially different readings of the piece, and I think each is a landmark in music history because his playing of Bach is so singular and compelling, especially this piece. I thought (and you might also be wondering, which is why I decided to write this), "Why should I care about a third recording of the same piece by the same player?" I thought it might be mildly interesting to hear how he played it in the 1959 Salzburg Festival, but this is much more than that.

If you think those other recordings of Goldberg are important, wait till you hear this! The liner notes say that Gould himself was aware that he'd "brought off something exceptionally fine," and that's why this is a priceless document. It's not note-perfect, like studio recordings tend to be. But that's not even germane, in fact that's part of the value. Here you have the artist's trademark hermetically-sealed concentration, feel for touch, dynamic contouring, etc., distilled into just over 37 minutes for the Goldberg (more than a minute shorter than the '55 reading). You get the sense he is creating or composing the music as he's playing. He sets a tempo because he determines that the music needs to be a certain tempo, and his fingers have no choice but to follow, and they miraculously do.

But here's the clincher - the sound is good! - for the Goldberg Variations. It's not some scratchy irritating wind-up-Victrola sound, and there is not a lot of audience noise. Unfortunately the same cannot be said for the 3-Part Inventions also included on this disc. They are just a historical curiosity for Gould fans; the recording is poor.

5 out of 5 stars Live is best...........2004-08-03

If you want perfection , don't buy this one. If this is your first Goldberg, don't buy this one. If you want passion in the performance of this beautiful music, buy this one.

4 out of 5 stars An historical quirk: Gould plays Goldbergs live........1999-01-20

Glenn Gould's name is invariably associated with firstly the Goldberg Variations, and secondly with his retirement from public performance. Here, however, we hear him playing the Goldbergs live, at the Salzburg Festival in the late 1950s. The recording's sound quality is very good, and the performance itself lies somewhere between the brazen race of the 1955 recording and the aged contemplation of the 1981. But the clarity of the lines is unmistakably Gouldian, and anyone interested in Gould ought to own this historical quirk, a live Goldbergs. The Inventions are also live but unfortunately are severely let down by very poor sound quality.

1 out of 5 stars A "B" class bootleg CD. Shame on you Mr. Manzanera!.......2001-01-14

In a dry season of pop music, and especially rock music, it's nice to go back in time to the good prog. music from the 70's. Some companies, like "King Biscuit" do wonderful job when publishing some old live recordings, that have never been on records or CDs before. But when they do such a thing, you know, that the CD sounds as good as new, or at least - almost. This is not the case here. Nothing is mentioned about the date of the performance, so you can think, like i did, that it was in the year 2000, when Manzanera decided to play his old music. Sounds nice, does'nt it? Now i'm almost sure, that it was taken somewhere around 1978-9. The band is good and includes Manzanera friends from Roxy Music (Eddy Jobson, Paul Thompson and David Skinner that joined later) plus Bass guitarist and vocalist Bill McCormick, from the original 801, and guitarist Simon Ainely. The material is taken from the first 801 live album, from "Listen now" and from Manzanera's solos "Diamond head" and "K-scope" (also you can find Roxy's "Out of the blue"). Till now - perfect. BUT.... when you put it on your stereo, what you hear is nothing more than a B class bootleg album. Terrible. I have some bootlegs that sound much better. I feel like being cheated by Mr. Manzanera (they wrote, that it's belong to his archieves). Every honest man can get the conclusion, that you can't sell such a thing without a warning. They did'nt do it, so i warn you instead. DO NOT BUY THAT CD!!! Go back to the great live album from 1976!!!

original much , really much, really,... very much better!

And to; What, no headphones, if you're still listening. I always took it for granted, 801 was the spin ratio of a wheel. 8 to 1, as in "true wheel" from, Eno's 1974 "Taking Tiger Mountain
". Although I could be wrong.

1 out of 5 stars Get 801:Live Instead.......2004-04-17

The previous reviewer obviously confused this disc with the original 801:Live (ASIN: B000003S0W), which is one of the great performances of the 70s. This disc, however, should not have been released. Only the true Phil Manzanera afficionado would want this if only to have every version of "Diamond Head" ever recorded. Otherwise, skip it. Get the original 801:Live for "Tomorrow Never Knows," "Miss Shapiro," and the definitive "Diamond Head." Get any Roxy Music recording of "Out of the Blue." This one is unlistenable. Get a Kinks (or Van Halen) album if you want "You Really Got Me."

5 out of 5 stars What, no headphones?.......2004-04-14

Disregard the previous reviewer's lack of insight. Let's turn the clock way back to 1977, which was the first year of punk, as it came to be known. What the hell does that have to do with Manzanera/801? Damned if I know, except that this is a timepiece for recorded slick performance and technical wizardry, as much as punk was crying out simultaneously for precisely the opposite trim downs in style and technicalities. The performance of this concert was immaculate, no dropped tunings or missteps, but technologically, the fidelity of this performance was way ahead of its time. I remember when I had to have the import version of the LP years before CDs came along, and how outstanding the mix and performances were...absolutely flawless. I can't understand how one pines for the original studio work, when everything there is here, and in much greater precision and brilliance, such as it would have to be to come through live, which it surely has and does!
Now if someone could just tell me what the 801 # meant!

1 out of 5 stars Inexplicably Bad Versions Of Great Songs.......1999-10-01

Astonishing. The songs covered here were uniformly wonderful in their studio versions, 801 was a very good band, & Manzanera is one of the best, most versatile guitar stylists. But this should never have been released. Trust me on this -- I love these guys, & I couldn't listen to this disc more than twice before getting rid of it.
