Ahh, the sounds of love. Hearing the soundtrack to the romantic comedy Runaway Bride, you'll get plenty of them. The Dixie Chicks, Eric Clapton, Martina McBride, and Shawn Colvin all lend new tracks to this sometimes-rootsy, sometimes-pop compilation. U2's classic anthem "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" starts things off, but Cupid quickly strikes with McBride's "I Love You," Clapton's intimate charmer "Blue Eyes Blue," and Marc Anthony's "You Sang to Me." Miles Davis's gorgeous "It Never Entered My Mind" is the one surprise cut, but the new tracks are the real highlight here. --Jason Verlinde

4 out of 5 stars A nice "Easy-Listening" soundtrack with some surprises!.......2006-10-30

Since "West Side Story" and Disney's "Mary Poppìns", I became addicted to soundtrack albums. This one from a wonderful, light romantic comedy in which the beautiful Julia Roberts appears as gorgeous as she is, has a nice but eclectic selection of songs. Anyway, please note that there are three outstanding songs for what this soundtrack is worth: "And That's What Hurts", an authentic 'jewel' by DARYL HALL & JOHN OATES (not available in any of their other records or Hits compilations), "Where Were You (On Your Wedding Day)" by BILLY JOEL, and also the wonderful ballad "You Sang To Me" by Puerto Rico Salsa superstar MARC ANTHONY.
There is also a cute version of the classic "You Can't Hurry Love" by THE DIXIE CHICKS... You will get even "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" by the superb Irish band U2. I bought this CD even when I didn't see the movie, but I was very happy when I discovered that so many great songs were included in it!

5 out of 5 stars terrific variety of music.......2005-03-09

First of all, if you haven't seen the movie yet, see it. It is one of the best romantic comedies. The soundtrack is wonderful. I don't normally like Eric Clapton, but his song "Blue Eyes Blue" is wonderful. I never was really interested in the Dixie chicks, until I saw the hilarious video at the end of the movie. Their song "ready to run" is great. This cd would appeal to anyone of any age.

5 out of 5 stars #12.......2003-10-19

i saw all the reviews of this sountrack & all you people are ignore the track by CoCo Lee-before i fall in love....that's a great song in the album, just listen to this song you won't be dissapoint, she had a sweet+strong voice!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining pop soundtrack.......2003-04-13

OK, the movie's not much to speak of--a bit contrived for my tastes. But buried beneath the goo, there is a solid soundtrack. Two Dixie Chicks tracks mix pop with a bit of country twang. While their remake of "You Can't Hurry Love" doesn't match up to the original, it is nevertheless highly entertaining.

A lovely, introspective Eric Clapton track is a highlight, as is Martina McBride's "I Love You." This catchy bit of pop is slight but nevertheless impossible to get out of your head.

Marc Antony's "You Sang To Me" is also lovely, if a bit more sentimental. The album also contains previously released 1980s tracks from U2 ("I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" from 1987's "The Joshua Tree") and Hall & Oates. As the Amazon review says, the new material is what makes this CD worth buying. Fun, high-energy listening, and better than your average compilation soundtrack.

3 out of 5 stars Romantic and eclectic.......2002-08-29

Like the movie itself, the Runaway Bride soundtrack is a romantic little piece that should appeal to a great variety of people. The disc encompasses different types of music, from jazz (Miles Davis) to pop (CoCo Lee) to country (Martina McBride), yet the common thread among all of 14 songs is the theme of love. However, I feel that the variety is both the strong point and the weak point of the disc. I'll explain: Personally, I bought this CD for a few gems: the fun "Where Were You?," the even more fun "Ready to Run," the danceable classic "You Can't Hurry Love," and, of course, the wistful "It Never Entered My Mind." Being a pop and jazz lover, I tend to skip over the easy listening selections. What I mean is that in covering all types of musical ground, the CD kind of spreads itself too thinly.

However, if you're looking for a CD of love songs that will conjure up images of this sweet movie (namely U2's "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" and Miles Davis's "It Never Entered My Mind"), look no further. This CD is the perfect background music for a sunny afternoon outside, particularly if you live in a town like the one in the movie.

5 out of 5 stars MESMERIZING, CAPTIVATING, A SYLVAN RAINBOW OF SONGS.......2007-04-15

How breathtaking! I'm listening to it as I write this. I don't know music or much else, but I know what stirs and enchants me and Ruthie Foster has me in her pocket, hole or no hole, from the moment I slipped in the disk and hit 'Play'. A friend burned a copy and gave it to me out of the blue, without preamble, in a stack with some other disks. Period. What a humble introduction for what I'm beginning to think may enter my pantheon of soul-stirring albums without blemish. That would put her in lofty company indeed, by MY lights, at least. Like, Carole King's 'Tapestry', Cat Stevens' 'Tea For the Tillerman', 'Fleetwood Mac', Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' and Meatloaf's 'Bat Out of Hell', to name just a few. I wasn't even sure what her name was at first, since he'd scrawled it on the CD. But I know it now and I'll do my small part to spread it around. THIS woman deserves to be famous. 'Runaway Soul' and Ruthie Foster have that sort of classic quality that just leaps into your heart and your guts and stakes a claim right from the first listening. I regret not having heard her in concert. That must be astonishing. But even from my tinny stereo she makes me cry, clap my hands and strut my flat like a one-man Mardi Gras! By all means, do yourself a kindness, if you love R&B, gospel, soul, or just smoothly polished passion and heartfelt boogie, buy a NEW copy of this CD. Which reminds me, I need to buy one too. This woman also DESERVES TO BE PAID!!!

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional Artist-Outstanding CD.......2007-01-11

The music on this CD is moving...emotionally, energetically, compositionally, and humanly. Ruthie Foster's delivery is magnificent and so well complemented by Cyd's rhythm and accompanying vocals. After I first experienced Ruthie perform (she was with Bo Didley in MD) her music was with me and in my soul. She is a treasure. Listening to, or singing along with Ruthie can make your day. Also check out her CD, "Stages" - standout performances by Ruthie and Cyd.

4 out of 5 stars The woman with the voice.......2005-12-17

I saw Ruthie at the Great Waters Folk festival in Wolfboro NH. She was amazing! After her performance one night I went to buy some CDs. Ruthie's were flying off the table. Despite stacks of them, they were gone in minutes. While looking at others to buy I kept hearing people coming up to the table making the same request, "I want the woman with the voice." Even though there were many much more famous singers there that night, eveyone knew exactly who these customers were looking for. "Sorry, we're sold out and waiting for Fed Ex to bring more. The woman behind the counter told me they sold 1000 of her cd's in one day!

If you grew up in a small country town, or ever wished you did, "Home" will warm and break you heart at the same time.

Do I love every song on this album? No. Doesn't matter. I love Ruthie. She is the real thing. As great as her gift sounds on a recording, it inevitably pales in comparison to her live performances where she shakes the rafters with the clearest, most perfectly on cue singing you ever heard. And when she finishes, after sending chills up and down your spine and leaving you weak from astonishment, she bursts into laughter. Ruthie is pure Joy.

5 out of 5 stars Ruthie Foster shares her soul.......2005-10-25

I've seen her live, I've shared a cup of coffee with her, I've gained inspiration from her because she is lays it out all the time. Runaway Soul captures Foster's incredible soul and voice. We are lucky she is willing and able to share her gift.

A repository of ex-Stray Cats' Slim Jim Phantom & Lee Rocker plus ex-members of the Polecats, the Swing Cats continue the Stray Cats conventions while covering artists as diverse as Carl Perkins, Hank Williams Sr. ("Mind Your Own Business") and Benny Goodman, with vocals supplied by an array of guests. Quite Good!

Hey there, Kats and Kittens. Wanna hear the screaminest hollow-body Gretsch guitar music this side of the Atlantic? Look no further. This should be titled THE BEST OF THE STRAY CATS. Because that's what this collection is all about. The only throw away track may be GIVE IT TO ME. The rest is pure rock-a-billy heaven. I wore my pomp real high in the early 80's when these boys first started slapping wood and I'm here to tell ya, it doesn't get any better than this. I WON'T STAND IN YOUR WAY and LONELY SUMMER NIGHTS are the two best ballads Brian Setzer has ever recorded and they're both included here. Check out the high-octane guitar power of ELVIS ON VELVET and then tell me this doesn't come close to tearing the throat out of any guitar solo by Chris Spedding. When I first bought this CD it never left the player in my ride and when ELVIS ON VELVET comes on, the windows go down, the volume goes up, and accelerator gets floored. GGGGO DADDY-O. The only thing that would make this collection complete would have been the inclusion of LOOK AT THAT CADILLAC and WILD SAXOPHONE. Otherwise, purrrrfect.

P.S. Who are these DIRTY DOGGIES bringing down the reviews of the coolest cats to ever cut a side? Go review your Iron Maiden CD. DRIPS!!

hey, i am on the bandwagon with everyone else. this is essential early DITC. FAT POCKETS inspired FATBACKS by quasimoto. SOUL CLAP.........NOLIA CLAP..........hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. love the title cut as well as the first song STILL DIGGIN'. everything else here has a very nice flow to it as well. shoot, the whole darn album has a nice flow to it. it did not get the props it deserved though. wasn't BOUNCE TA THIS on this one as well? if so, then hey, another song i love from this classic that time forgot.

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF BEST EAST COAST CLASSIC EVER.......2007-01-17

sadly I don't own this cd due to it's cost but I've listened it and i know it's a pure classic from the golden era of hip-hop, the early '90s. others rewier have already wrote what i think about it's gorgeous beats, so i just can say. this is pure hip-hop no BS, not the punk dirtysouth sound of these fu...n' 2000 years nor othewr club s..t
wonderful, I might to find it cheaper because now iz too expensive

5 out of 5 stars A truly underrated classic.......2006-08-22

Showbiz & A.G. released "Runaway Slave" in 1992 and it immediately became the first of what would be a long line of underrated hip hop gems from the New York hip hop crew, Diggin' in the Crates. This album is the first from the amazing DITC crew and it ranks among the very greatest. Truly an amazing album. Showbiz & A.G. brought a whole new style to the table, using upbeat, funky production layered with many horns and jazz samples without screaming jazz rap at you. The production is some of the best east coast production out there, it's so consistent and beautiful. Like with all the DITC albums, the lyricism is wonderful to listen to, always entertaining and often funny, always on a level you can feel. Showbiz and fellow DITC member Diamond D produce the tracks, and Showbiz and AG trade off rhymes with a great chemistry. This could be classified as a party album, and that would definitely be a party I'd like to attend. They cover lots of different topics in their rhymes though, tackling some social issues like racism, public housing, and gossip. It's a crime that "Runaway Slave" is out of print, and if you can find it nothing should stop you from getting it.

The album begins with the song "Still Diggin'", which represents everything DITC would proceed to bring us throughout the 90s. It has a great sax-laced beat and the duo talk about their abilities and preferences. The beat to "Fat Pockets" is a head spinning, jazzy one, and the lyrics deal with liking "pockets fat and not flat". "Bounce to This" is among the funkiest, with great bass and cymbal. My favorite instrumental is on "More Than One Way Out of the Ghetto", it has an awesome intro and the lyrics are very relevant. "40 Acres & My Props" is similarly great, conscious lyrics and awesome production. The title track has awesome horn instrumentation, and "Hard to Kill" always keeps my head bobbing. "Hold Ya Head" is one of my favorites, awesome track, great lyrics and beats. "He Say, She Say" tells a story about how lives are ruined by gossipping people. Both mixes of "Silence of the Lambs" are great party tracks, and "Soul Clap" and the self explanatory "Party Groove" could each be described similarly. There's not a bad track here, it's so amazingly consistent.

This album is a great album and the fact that it's out of print is a shame. However, despite its amazing quality, paying upwards of $80 for any CD sounds kind of ridiculous to me, I know it is available for sale or download for much cheaper elsewhere. "Runaway Slave" is just one of the many great early 90s jazzy, funky hip hop albums from the city of New York, and I highly recommend it to all.

5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece. Esssential DITC........2006-05-09

Along with Pharcyde's "Bizarre Ride II", for me, this is the best album to come from one of the best years of Hip Hop (1992). Similarly, this is the best album to come from DITC, which is a bold statement since DITC is one of the most consistent hiphop groups ever, behind Wu Tang, with each and every solo member bringing classic material to the table (Lord Finesse,OC,Diamond D,Big L,). This is Quintessential NY Early 90's hiphop. From the distinctive horns, breaks, samples, snares/drums, flows, ebonics & the natural Funk Show & AG display any fan of early 90's hiphop will worship this, I guarantee it. With 16 Full Tracks, their is not one weak track on the album...Pure CONSISTENCY. It is a landmark, with the track "Represent" featuring Diamond, Finesse, Big L & D-Shawn this is the first group DITC track...on wax. Showbiz really shines on Runaway Slave, with flawless production especially on tracks like "Fat Pockets", "He say, She Say" "Represent" & Catchin Wreck. Compared to "Goodfellas", Runaway Slave is slightly less dark and gives off that funky vibe that was primarily heard in that era. Similarly, You can bet Andre The Giant (AG) comes correct with the flows, lyrics and of course the trademark Voice!
An album that cracks my personal top 10, any fan of DITC, Early 90's Hiphop or music that generally displays raw talent...needs to treat their mental with this, and prepare for an eargasm!. PEACE (P.S. as you can probably tell this is extremely rare, so you will find you will have to pay alot for this, but believe me, its worth it).

Carter Burwell cut his film scoring teeth on many a Coen brothers movie, quickly gaining a reputation for a quirky, human-scaled inventiveness that informed everything from jazz and folk to orchestral music and even the well-timed nod to Morricone. That often introspective sensibility is well paired to director John Lee Hancock's revisionist take on the legend of San Antonio's fabled doomed fortress, which focuses more on the conflicted human dimensions of its characters than familiar cardboard, pop culture heroics. Burwell's use of orchestral pomp is deliberate and decidedly restrained; more often the composer leans on spare, evocative passages of simple, though ever-inventive folk-based music (like the elegiac "Quiet Mountain") played by various combinations of guitar, banjo, and violin. Vintage traditional Mexican and American tunes are also given their atmospheric due via Jennifer Hammond's and Craig Eastman's arrangements of "La Zandunga" and "Listen to the Mockingbird Sing," respectively. But its Burwell's own peculiarly modernist instincts that inform both tradition ("Crockett's DeGuello") and his own masterfully understated cues, particularly the bleak, almost gothic emotional landscape of his six-part "Battle of the Alamo Suite" and its bittersweet coda, "Blood or Texas." --Jerry McCulley

1 out of 5 stars Don't Remeber THIS "Alamo".......2006-07-21

When making another version of a film that has already been made producers, directors, performers, and score composers are too often tempted to "do it differently",as if by twisting and turning a basic premise they will succeed..The classic film version of"The Alamo"is and remains the John Wyane version, which was nominated for several academy awards.Granted, the John Wyane version had little to do with actual history, but, then again, the purpose of the film industry has always been to entertain, not to teach..John Wyane, who produced and directed,as well as being the star of that film chose Dimitri Tiomkin to score his film.
Tiomkin,and old-line symphonic genius,provided a magnificent score,at once adventurous and poingnant..
The people responsible for this version of"The Alamo"decided to teach, rather than entertain, and,at the same time attempted to be politically correct as well. Thus, the mythic aspects inherent in the John Wyane version were replaced by morally ambiguous nonsense, and heroics were more or less eliminated in favor of a rather desperate survival theme, coupled with some added imperialistic touches with the addition of the Sam Houston charecter as a major player along with Bowie,Crockett, and Travis.
The people responsible for this film ,having many fine symphonic-oriented composers to choose from instead opted for minalmism by Carter Burwell..One can hardly imagine, for instance,a five-star gourmet meal served on a foam plate, with plastic knife and fork.Likewise one can hardly imagine a would-be epic western (even if it is very revisionist)bearing a score that plays like a new-age snoozer...But this is exactly what Burwell has given us...There are no epic themes here...There is an enormous orchestra credited as having participated in this project however when one listens to the finished product one is hard-pressed to HEAR any evidence of this participation.
John Wyane's script called for a lot of action on-screen,and Tiomkin obligingly provided very suitable musical themes..
The script for this new film does not call for very much action, even short-changing the audience during the final battle scene by shooting it in near-darkness,and underscoring it with a dirge-like monotone.
This new film was"troubled"from the very start.Ron Howard was supposed to direct but he didn't.The cast was shuffled around several times. Some "Main"charecters were eliminated entirely ,although thier traces continued to show up in the trailers released for this movie..While on the subject of the trailers for this film, the music used in them was 110% better than the Burwell claptrap..Scenes featured in the trailers were actually NOT in the finished film. The film was scheduled for a christmas opening,a slot usually reserved for top-of-the-line oscar contenders, and was then, suddenly yanked, and later released in April, where it died a much-deserved death after about a week in theatres,a colossal flop.
The film was terrible, and part of this is due to the Burwell score which is terrible-plus.

I enjoyed the film and, in particular, the intelligent and sensitive portrayal of David Crockett but...so much had been cut by the time it was released as a DVD in England. The soundtrack is pleasant enough so if you liked it on the screen you will enjoy the CD but we do not have the Deguello on its own, (but have the haunting duo with David Crockett's fiddle), and we do not have the saucy little tune played at San Jacinto. On balance, worth buying.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable a-typical score.......2005-03-05

Most war movies have underscore's that pulse with energy and power of battle. Carter Burwell takes another course. His music is melancholy and some people have taken the celtic sounding music and complained out it but I found the music to be powerful and perfectly fitting with the movie. The Alamo is also enjoyable as a single listening experience although it does help to have seen the movie. I particularly enjoyed the track where Crockets fiddle is combined with the Mexican "Slit Throat" band. Overall, I found this cd to be enjoyable and it gets better every time i listen to it.

5 out of 5 stars None Better.......2004-12-01

A few comments about the movie The Alamo, if you would indulge me for a moment. It is pertinent. I didn't have high expectations for this film, the trailers I saw made it out to be another larger-than-life, ain't-afraid-of-nothing, cliché-filled motion picture. We lived in San Antonio for several years, it is a great town filled with wonderful people. We visited the Alamo on several occasions. It is a holy place for Texans, sacred, and being "non-Texans" I am sure most of the locals felt we really couldn't appreciate or even grasp the significance of the place, the honor of those who fought and died there. I must admit it was all somewhat lost on me. Thus, I was fully expecting this movie to be overdone and nauseating, especially considering I am not the biggest fan of two of the lead actors (Billy Bob Thorton and Dennis Quaid).

OK, please bear with me, I will get to my point in a second. We ended up renting the film as I had heard the cinematography was sensational (it was). But my biggest surprise was the film itself. Not the script, not the actors, but the entire film. I can't really put into words how good it was, not perfect, but an excellent motion picture and probably an accurate depiction of the individuals and events as they occurred. And both Thornton and Quaid were exceptional...they deserve Oscars come January, and it will be a shame if they don't get them.

Now, concerning this soundtrack. To put it simply, if this CD isn't the best soundtrack winner for 2004, then there is a conspiracy going on. It isn't on Amazon's editors picks, nor the customer's favorites list, I chalk that up to being it was just recently released. However, it should be on both, and highly competitive for the top honors this year. It is simply that good. Carter Burwell set a new standard with the soundtrack for O Brother, Where Art Thou? and may have exceeded it with this one. The music here just puts the visualizations of the movie back into my head...the music retells the story as well as the images.

The bottom like is fairly straightforward, if you liked the movie than you owe it to yourself to get this soundtrack. There is absolutely no way you will be anything other than engrossed in it.

4 out of 5 stars A Guilty Pleasure.......2007-03-29

As a progressive rock fan, any dipping into straight pop is, at best, a guilty pleasure for me. This album is simply wonderful and I often find myself cruising down some lonely stretch of Texas highway, singing along with Belinda. It helps quite a bit that Belinda Carlisle has an absolutely dreamy voice - that's right, pop singers used to be able to sing! Where this album really stands out, though, is that the songs are actually quite complex, by pop standards, and that the musicians are really allowed to shine - the violin solo on La Luna, short though it may be, is gorgeous. I would own this album for that violin solo alone ... but almost every other song on the album is just as beautifully embellished. The only song on the album I dislike is (We Want) The Same Thing - too poppish for my tastes - but I can't think of any other pop album that has so many strong tracks. If one must own a Belinda Carlisle album, this is the one!

5 out of 5 stars Belinda Carlisle - Runaway Horses.......2007-03-19

One of the best CD's she's ever came out with. There really isn't any song thats better than the next because their all AWSOME!!! I'd say "Summer Rain" is the best in my opinion cuz i relate to it. "VISION OF YOU" i relate to also and love that song as well. This cd captures the essense of BELINDA CARLISLE!!! She is truly amazing. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this cd. Dancy, exciting, upbeat, and romantic!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars One of her best cd's @}>---.......2006-07-14

Belinda Carlisle has a stunning and unique voice that I love. I've got all of her solo cd's and this is one of the best of them.
There is a great mix of songs on here, from boppy to beautiful ballads. If you are the ballad type, then the best songs are Vision Of You (one of her best songs ever) and Shades of Michaelangelo. The best upbeat songs are Runaway Horses, La Luna and of course Leave A Light On. Yes I do love Summer Rain, but it's so overplayed. There isn't a bad song on the whole disc. I really wish she'd do new music - especially if it's going to be anything like this.

I put this CD player at my desk, not knowing what to expect and was pleasantly surprised at the depth and content of the songs. It's a very good listen! It's priced reasonable folks, get a copy and enjoy it. Four stars!!

What a shame they discontinued the great CD by Belinda! Every song, including her own, is a winner. I own every Belinda CD but this one but that won't be for long and once I do get it, I will treasure it. Be great if someone picked up on the rights to these songs and released them!

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection.......2004-11-25

Sure, the cover is dorky, and many post-modern rock fans weaned on a steady diet of hip hop and death metal may judge Shannon's music as "oldies." Yet, Del Shannon's music sounds as good today as it did in the early-60s. If you buy this album only for "Runaway," you will find many treasures. "Runaway" is simply one of the best rock and roll songs ever recorded, but much of this collection is as good, such as "Searchin'" which has the same minor-key sound as "Runaway." Shannon's version of "From Me to You," complete with its falsetto "I can do" lyric in the song's second line, is better than the Beatles version (which Shannon recorded first). In sum, I was simply amazed at how good this collection is, and also how modern it sounds. Shannon covers all the vocal bases. At times he sounds like Elvis, at other times like Roy Orbison, at other times like the Fifth Beatle. The strange organ instrument that Shannon used on "Runaway," and other songs here, sounds unlike any other I've heard, and pretty much serves as the first synthesizer in rock. The only misfire on the album is "Don't Gild the Lily," which is ripe with the most awful cliches imaginable. Other than that, however, the Best of Del Shannon is a great CD. Sadly, Shannon's success had pretty much ended by the mid-60s. But before then, he recorded some great work. Much of it is here.

5 out of 5 stars As good as a single-disc dosage of Del could get.......2004-07-08

Del Shannon was one of America's young up and coming rock and roll stars in the early sixties, and one of the first rock and roll musicians to emphasize the usage of synthesizers. Unfortunately, Del's true genius was never recognized. Despite scoring a few hits earlier in the decade, he was immediately overshadowed by the numerous other rock and roll acts that came in the decade. Many collections of Del's songs have been released over the years, including this one. Read on for my review, and see if this collection is any better than the earlier releases.

PROS:
-ALL THE BIG HITS ARE HERE. Chances are that you really just wanted a Del Shannon hits compilation for the hits Runaway and Keep Searchin', and needless to say, you'll get them both in this set.
-UNDERRATED MASTERPIECES CAN BE FOUND IN THIS SET, AND A LOT OF THEM. Most of Del Shannon's songs never got the proper recognition that they deserved, but were still excellent songs. In this set, you'll be able to hear many of those songs.
-YOU GET A BONUS TRACK - AN ALTERNATE VERSION OF RUNAWAY. Although this version of the songs is really nothing spectacularly different from the "classic" version, it's still a nice bonus.
-THE SET IS A HUGE VALUE. You get THIRTY TRACKS on a single compact disc! No other single-disc Del Shannon hits compilation has so many songs on one disc.

CONS:
-Really, unless you're a die-hard fan of Del Shannon who is willing to debate the tracklist, there's not much wrong with this set.

OVERALL:
Overall this is a damn good set, and quite possibly the finest Del Shannon compilation on the market. If you're looking for a Del Shannon hits compilation and can't seem to decide which one is for you, this is the one to get, hands down.

5 out of 5 stars If you are looking for all the hits..............2003-05-06

A great package of Del goodies with the alternate 61 cut in stereo of Runaway. Has the usual gems and a few others and most definately a best buy if you are looking for a comprehensive 'hits' collection.

Time tho for the powers that be to put out more of his non-hit catalogue - many gems exist and its a project crying out to be tackled.

Buy this!

4 out of 5 stars It All Comes Down To the Lead Vocals - You Either Love Em or Hate Em.......2007-01-12

This second LP from this New Zealand band can be best described as guitar layered pop lying somewhere between Keane and My Bloody Valentine. Enchanting, haunting, beautifully composed music is marred by the somewhat stagey vocals that will strike most people as great or awful--you decide. To me, they sound great but every once in a while they verge a little too close to stadium rock (think any Guns N Roses ballad you've ever heard) and then I skip that track as it takes away from the better ambience of the lush compositions (which remind one of the Cocteau Twins or Hooverphonic maybe?) Overall solid effort, at least 3 songs you can't stop listening to no matter what you think of the voice, which in my mind is a good buy all things considered.

2 out of 5 stars Great music, horrible voice.......2006-10-09

I suppose the lead singer's voice would grow on some people or grate upon others. I am one of those folks whose ears are sensitive to the unbearable chalkboard-scratching of Andrews' vocal chords and dropped vowels. This is possibly what makes The Veils more than just another band. The music is rich and textured with incredible harmonies and consuming sounds of a variety of elements. "Lavinia" is the richest of these songs, leading the listener into a pleasing earful of piano, guitar, and background voices. Unfortunately, it's the only song I can tolerate without feeling like my eardrums might be ripped from my head by Andrews' voice.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2006-06-12

I think the best review is simply a story of how often I listen to this album. In all truth, almost daily, for well over a few months now, the Veils have been a part of my daily music set, and I cant see them fading from this rank any time soon. The haunting melodic songs sooth the soul and quiet the restless, while still pumping up listeners with smooth adrenaline. This album is a must have in any music collection.

5 out of 5 stars The best british band out there.......2006-04-03

I buy a mass amount of british rock cds every month. Not since A Rush of Blood to the Head have I been so enamoured with a cd. More Heat Than Light rocks in a way that would kill Jack White. Nowhere Man and Lavinia are beautiful pieces that rank among U2's best. Guiding Light reminds me of Suede in their heyday. More than this though, is Finn Andrews, the 19-year old lead singer. He has the most powerful and unique voice that sets this band apart from other Radiohead wannabes. I dare you to listen to The Leaver's Dance and not get teary-eyed. This may be the best album you will hear this decade. All those hoping Travis and Elbow would have produced some stronger material this year should order this immediately. I only hope America listens and that The Veils get the attention and adoration they deserve. I would also suggest ordering the singles as Death and Co. is probably my favorite track that did not make the album. All of their b-sides are worthy of attention. Finally a new favorite cd that ranks among The Joshua Tree and James' Laid.

5 out of 5 stars It can't be healthy to listen to this album as much as I do. .......2005-10-26

I've had this cd on repeat since I bought it 3 weeks ago. Every song is brilliantly written. All of the songs are quite varied, with each track differing from the next, while still holding a common theme. Having written the entire album at only 17, Finn Andrews is pure genius. His voice is hauntingly beautiful and incomparable to any other's.

Album Description

Brides of Destruction entered the studio with veteran producer Andy Johns (Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, and Free) at the end of 2004. The result of this incredible union "Runaway Brides" is a staggering collection of street lethal rock and roll, imbued with both the classic rock & roll spirit and the edge of modern youth.

4 out of 5 stars more Tracii magic.......2006-08-20

This album doesn't deserve the bagging it's getting, it rocks pretty hard. Yeah it's different to the first one, and yeah Nikki's off playing with the Crue...get over it.

5 out of 5 stars Don't believe all the negative reviews!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-03-28

After reading so many negative reviews of this album I was hesitant on buying it. I said screw it and got it anyway and I'm glad I did!! It goes to show you don't trust anyone's opinion but your own. All the songs rock pretty hard. Tracci plays some killer riffs. Kudos to London for the great singning especially on 'Never Say Never' with a little bit of Steven Tyler influence. If you like LA guns and Motley you should dig this CD. Check it out.

1 out of 5 stars Drop the Nu from the Metal Please.......2005-12-17

Tracii Gunns hooking up with Nikki Sixx and John Corabi sounded like the best thing since the "Use Your Illusion" albums. Just like those albums, the Brides of Destruction left with something to be wanted. Corabi left before anything happened, which is a shame, because had Corabi stayed, the songs would have been greatly written, as well as having the strong voice that is John Corabi.

Anyway, enough of my rant about missing Corabi (I call him Jesus), this album is also without Nikki Sixx, who seems to me like the only real strong songwriter for the group. Tracii is a phenomenal guitarist, but he needed Paul Black or Phil Lewis to do the writing in L.A. Guns. "American Hardcore" proved that.

So what's with this album? How is it?

Well, to be honest, none of the songs have good hooks or are catchy. The wordplay is weak, and the rhymes can be seen from miles away. London LeGrand, while a competent vocalist on "Here Come The Brides," fails to impress on this record. His screams are weak and it sounds like he was sick while recording the whole thing. Likewise, Tracii's guitar solos seem awkward and out of place on the album.

The sound doesn't come off good. From their Sleaze Metal debut they come out with an album dropping the Sleaze and picking up the Nu. Seriously, this is a Nu-Metal album. The riffing is just like Nu-Metal bands, not like real Metal or Rock n' Roll groups. It makes the album even worse.

Standout tracks?

None. I'm sorry to say.

So overall, I give this album 1 star, except for my copy, which recieves 2 stars for the simple reasoning that it's signed by the band. I don't even have it with my other CDs, in a nice leather bound carrying case. Instead, it's still in the box art, signed by the band, because I heard it once, and I don't want to hear it again.

Don't buy this. Get L.A. Guns "Tales From The Strip" and you'll be glad you did. While no Tracii, his replacement (ex-Roxx Gang. A guy you've never heard of) fits perfectly with Phil Lewis. Probably makes Tracii regret ever leaving the Guns for the Brides.

Take off the dress, and pick up the revolver Tracii, that's all I'm saying.

1 out of 5 stars BY ALL MEANS....STAY AWAY FROM THIS CD!!!.......2005-11-27

I really liked the first BoD CD. So, I was excited to buy this one when it came out. Now that I have it, all I can say is: Anyone who ever questioned Nikki Sixx's songwriting ability...just listen to this CD. His absence is GLARING!!! There are NO stand out songs on this CD. Every song just drags along with no hook or melody or ANYTHING you can hang your hat on. I've never been more disappointed in a sophomore release. All four guys need to move on now....the Brides have Destructed!

2 out of 5 stars Appetite For Destruction it ain't.......2005-10-25

1.5 Stars

While Brides of Destruction's debut album "Here Come the Brides" wasn't a masterpiece, it was still a pretty good, meat-and-potatoes collection of punk-tinged rock songs. With John Corabi (guitar) contributing and Nikki Sixx (bass) as a principal songwriter, it would have to be at least pretty good.

For their sophomore album, gone is Corabi (who left before the release of the debut, but played on the album) and Nikki Sixx. Former LA Guns guitarist Tracii Gunns is left on his own to lead the band. The problem is, while Gunns is a good guitar player, he is not that great of a songwriter; hence, the poor quality of "Runaway Brides" (2005). Although Sixx is credited as writing some of the songs, it's sure hard to tell. Not only do these songs lack good hooks and memorable melodies, but the songs sound forced. It's as though they're trying too hard to sound aggressive and angry. Add to that a mediocre singer in London LeGrand, and you have a pretty bad album.

If you have a yearning for an old-school, 80s sounding rock album, check out the Beautiful Creature's new album "Deuce," or the new (Tracii Gunn-less) LA Guns album "Tales from the Strip." "Runaway Brides" is pure bargain-bin fodder

I found joy, humor and great talent in the CD. My regret is that I couldn't see the production with this very talented cast. I only hope that at sometime it could be presented on major stages with this cast. I'm sure that it could challenge "CATS" for pure enjoyment. I will continue to hope to go to New York and see "Bark".

Bark, the musical is at first cute and entertaining, however the gloss wears thin quickly. Then you realize that you're listening to a mediocre cast album that doesn't hold up well over time. Not a good investment for your Original Cast album collection
