THE best debut album bar none............2007-06-01
A Walk Across the Rooftops....on graduation day....
1983. Still timeless, beautiful, melancholy. IMHO the best debut album of all time. Still sounds incredible. A must have for any serious appreciator of pure emotional songwriting.... The follow up HATS is also a must have. The 3rd album Peace at Last (1996) has some gems (Family Life, Happiness), and their fourth album, High, is in my view their weakest to date BUT... having said that, the bar was raised IMPOSSIBLY high with the first two albums.....
Overall.... essential music for any collection. A welcome cup of coffee on a rainy afternoon.....
brilliant 1983 blue nile debut........2007-02-26
this is extraordinary elegant, sophisticated pop music. with its synthesized sounds, strings, electronics, and other exotica, much of this music would fit easily on early brian eno albums. highly creative, this recording also sports much in the way of big bass and drum sounds; however, it is the singer that really gives this its classic feel. the vocals are stunning, emotionally charged and full of yearning. just a great, great cd. don't miss this or any of the other 3 blue nile recordings; they are all outstanding.
One of the best songs ever heard.......2007-01-09
TINSELTOWN IN THE RAIN is for me one of my best 10 songs ever if not the first. Abosolutely a work of art. Moving and gorgeous. The rest of the album is one of my favorites by far. Together with HATS, both are those records I would take to a dessert island.
cheers
Brilliant.......2006-08-08
I am not going to go on too much at length about The Blue Nile and A Walk Across the Rooftops other than to say I first heard it in 1984 and to this day I still consider it one of the most brilliant albums I have ever heard. If you have any musical intelligence, you will recognize it immediately.
Pretty darn good, but..........2006-06-04
Ever since I first heard The Blue Nile, about seven years ago, I was hooked. Paul Buchanan's voice was one of the most special I'd heard in a long time. Yet, as amazing as I found "A Walk Across the Rooftops" to be, they never did anything remotely as powerful as their album "Hats". As a matter of fact, it may very well be one of the best albums ever recorded, one of those proverbial albums to take with you to a desert island...
Just because of that shortcoming, I cannot give this one more than four stars. It's pretty good, yes, but "Hats" is where you need to start if you are going to dig into The Blue Nile's music.

Customer Reviews:
Good CD.......2007-03-08
This CD is good, although I'm not much of a "live" music person when it comes to CDs. Amazed is definitely my favorite song. I will continue to listen!!
Great Band.......2007-01-24
I really love these guys, intense energy. I have all of their CDs, the next CD is really great too, "Who You Are". Sure wish they would come to Germany. "I am Free is" being sung by Newsboys and Michael W Smith at concerts.
Great Album.......2006-03-09
This is a Great Album, but really the only reason I bought this cd if for the Song "The Beauty of the Lord". Also, the song "I am free" I hear quite often on the radio as well as "the beauty of the lord". This album is worth the buy just for those 2 songs. However, the entire is wonderful..I suggest it to anyone who would like a great worship album to listen to.
Honest, focused worship that rocks!.......2004-08-20
Modern worship is the hot button these days. Much of it is good, but the truly heart touching stuff is harder to come by. Desperation's "From The Rooftops" is one of those great albums that is so infectious you can't help but join in their enthusiasum. It has a great presence of "live" worship while balancing high quality production value for repeated listening. From the declarative "Everyone" and "The Whole Earth" to intimate worship tracks like "The Beauty of the Lord" this album takes the listener through a complete worship experience. If you've enjoyed the heartfelt worship of Hillsongs Australia, you'll love Desperation from Colorado!
Even better than the first!!.......2004-05-01
If it's at all possible, this CD is even better than the first one. The Desperation guys are so awesome at writing music that are so incredibly real. I love this one especially because it speaks of freedom, the freedom Christ gave us when He died on the cross for us. He gave us the freedom to be released from our pasts, to be washed clean of our sins, to shout from the rooftops about Him, to dance before Him, and especially to worship Him with all our might.

A quiet, passionate masterpiece.......2004-01-13
Supremely original and uncategorizable pop music from this artistic Glasgow, Scotland trio. At first impression this beautifully produced 20-year-old but ageless debut's sound is more ambient, atmospherically textured and stark than their excellent followup "Hats." "A Walk Across the Rooftops"'s evocative soundscape sometimes call to mind the Cocteau Twins and Rain Tree Crow (the 1990 album by David Sylvian and the reformed Japan.) But repeated listening brings to the fore the passion of Paul Buchanan's soulful and unforgettable dawnbreaker vocals and tactile and poetic urban-detailed lyrics. (Glasgow, its buildings, streets and people, seems to be an almost spiritual influence.) A sense of romantic yearning and loneliness on songs like "Easter Parade," "Tinstletown in the Rain" and "Stay" call to mind (of all things) 'Only the Lonely'-period Frank Sinatra. It's difficult to overpraise this record. It might be appreciated by fans of Kate Bush, Tom Waits, Brian Eno, Nick Drake and David Sylvian.
It started Something.......2003-10-24
I first heard this album in 1994, one year after its release. It was a different sound than could be found at the time. It had some special characteristics that I'd never heard before.
The Blue Nile, from Glasgow, Scotland, made up of four men who wanted more from being musicians than the fame that pop music had brought many of their contemporaries, made this masterpiece on a low budget, using Studio downtime.
The result was a collection of edgy, harsh but mysterious tracks, still loaded with craft and melody, and a voice that drew its character more from Sinatra than Le Bon.
Its starts with the title track "A Walk Across the Rooftops". A combination of street sounds, synth orchestra and bass guitar, which breaks noisily into the red.
"Tinseltown in the Rain", which time would prove to be writer Paul Buchanan best, reaches heights I had never before experienced. Its piled higher and higher with rhythm, texture, emotion, and a driving sense of urgency..I will listen to this song forever.
Each of the tracks seems to transport you to another place and time, I can still remember my first journey's. Side two takes you to melancholy Sunday afternoons in the spring. "Easter Parade", and you can hear and smell those quiet, yet colourful days..I could feel the morning dew.
I recommend this album to you.
Modern Art.......2003-05-08
There are guitars here that sound like U2 in Joshua Tree four years before U2 started sounding like that. There are songs here that rival Tears for Fears before that band became a band. I contend that in a deep undergroud somewhere and sometime in the early '80s, blokes from other bands got together, heard some songs off Walk Across the Rooftops, figured out which ones they could copy to make a career; then executed their plan. Almost every song on this CD is different and begins with a random modern art type song that seems fragmented, but integrates beautifully and keeps your interest. The second song is the one that sounds like Tears for Fears. It is so well done you'll want to play it over and over. This is not experimental music; it is art uniquely conveyed, each song its own entity ranging from pure pop modern art to blues, jazz and rock. If you are student of music, this will surely satisfy your thirst for the unique.

Album Description
An incendiary blast of soul, punk, funk and subterranean rock, WATCHERS' wildly inventive debut combines mile-deep grooves, no wave skronk, dub experimentation and soul-drenched strings into a full-on dance party. Think TRENCHMOUTH, A CERTAIN RATIO, POP GROUP, Young Americans-era BOWIE, and Remain In Light-era TALKING HEADS. Garnering advance props from XLR8R, Time Out, The Onion and Skyscraper on the strength of their demo alone, WATCHERS are also a live phenomenon, having played with RADIO 4, YEAH YEAH YEAHS, ERASE ERRATA, !!! and others. Recorded on the board that tracked Sly Stone's 1974 classic Small Talk, To The Rooftops nods to the past while blazing a trail into the future. Time to party To The Rooftops. Listen and believe.
Customer Reviews:
absolute genius!.......2003-12-02
Definitely one of the most overlooked records of the year...a skronk soul funk weirderiffic masterpiece, think a herky-jerkier "!!!" or more dissonant Radio 4 or Rapture, or the Talking Heads if they were on Troubleman. It's got endless grooves, moog freakouts, even some nice string parts. Check the last song: it's a monster.

Awesome but reject the shamanism.......2003-10-16
I love Peter Kater and most of his music without occult or shaman titles in them, because the truth is, it is part of a cult thinking and spiritual darkness. I studied it for years as I did other cults and I know people firsthand who were involved with the illuminated cult and "ism. Otherwise he has an excellent talent and beautiful spirit in music and melodic creation on the piano and you cannot deny that he has a God-given gift, if and when he ever acknowledges that is truly where it comes from.

just saw chuck live in frederick, md and bought the CD. he's great live and the CD captures it well too. really mellow acoustic folk. has a style and songs that your soul has been waiting to hear.
i'd compare to damien rice, but better.
Chuck E. Costa is AMAZING.......2004-07-08
Like a gourmet meal for your ears, From the Rooftops, is a delicious listen that soothes and captivates the soul. Chuck E.'s thoughtful poetry put to music covers the spectrum of listening pleasure. Light, and carefree are "Just a Dog" and "Playmate," while "Able," "Car or the Opossum," and "Old Glory" ask you to think a little longer while the melodies and acoustic richness carry you. A fantastic album that will complete and compliment any Folk or Indie menu.
an amazing and soulful journey.......2004-07-07
If you like well crafted, reflective, acoustic music, you should give Chuck E. Costa a listen. His amazing gift for words cut to the heart of the matter, whether it is the confusion of our current political state or the the joy of just have a great time,.Chuck captures it with a beautiful rhythm, a turn of the phrase, and a pure experience for the listener. It is refreshing to hear harmony and unplugged guitar with poetry lately; and this is the greatest companion to long drives and reflective moments. "Old Glory" is a great favorite, as it poignant lyrics and catchy tune will attest to, but I also love "Six Honest Serving Men". I love this new artist; and know that great things are coming from such a great songwriter and musician. And hey, if you get to hear Chuck performing live, take it while you can!

Atmospheric Ballets.......2005-06-03
The two ballets on this disc represent Jean Francaix at his most humorous. This is the third disc in the series of Jean Francaix's orchestral music and once again demonstrates his ability to express musical ideas with wit and precision.
The ballet Le roi nu (The Naked King) was based on Hans Christian Anderson's The Emperor's New Clothes and was premiered in 1936 at the Paris Opera Ballet with Serge Lifar doing the corrriagraphy and dancing the role of the king. The ballet has been considered as Lifar's greatest achievement. The music is well-suited to the subject, colorful and expressive. The music tells the story perfectly, down to the laughter when the king, believing himself to be dressed to perfection, is found to be naked by the members of the court.
The other ballet on this disc, Les demoiselles de la nuit (The Ladies of the Night), is termed a ballet for cats in two scenes and was premiered in 1948. The action concerns several cats that mimic human behavior. The chief male cat named Baron de Grotius intends to wed a beautiful white kitten named Agathe; but she is in love with a human violinist. The marriage to the Baron takes place, provided with a nicely written procession and ceremony music. However, through her love of the violinist, Agathe becomes human herself but keeps falling back into her feline ways - most notably when she kills a bird. Agathe also has problems preventing herself from joining the nocturnal cavorting of her cat companions; the cats are chased by the violinist who falls to his death. The ballet ends with Agathe curling up next to the body of the violinist to show her devotion. Agathe was danced at the premiere by a young Margot Fonteyn. The ballet is evocative of moon-lit nights - a nocturne opens (and also closes) the first scene. The dances are playful and romantic with a touch of feline stylization to the melodies that nicely describe the cat's world in music.
Jean Francaix was truly in his element when writing his ballets. The dances are colorful and beautifully orchestrated. This is a pleasant disc that anyone interested in French music will want to have.
