Editorial Reviews

Product Description
What is more perfect than an escape into the natural splendor of a remote Caribbean island? Warmed by the sun, soothed by the surf and serenaded by the exotic sounds of the tropical rainforest, it seems that you have found paradise. A subtle, sensitive musical score complements this tranquil sojourn.

5 out of 5 stars CD.......2007-03-30

This is a fairly unknown band from the 70's. Rock and roll with a different sound than the usual bands from that era. Would highly recommend listening to it.

5 out of 5 stars Good stuff not dated.........2007-02-20

I know nothing about the second paradise island album but i did own the vinyl versions of lake, and lake 2 and very much enjoyed them. The signatured self titled "Lake" was their best and it was solid rock-pop with some prog elements. The kansas comparison doesn't wash because kansas played much harder and was also a better prog band. That's why kansas was so great.

If we had to place an identity for this sound as far as comparing them to something many people would know it would be styx. The pre mr roboto styx anyway. The music is tight free flowing with nice vocal harmonies and solid musicianship. Lake was the album we would pull out when we wanted something different from our typical prog lineup. Something a little easier to listen to.

Lake never hit the big time because they were not able to manufacture any big top 40 hits in america. There is little controversial or ground breaking about the music and the lyrics are not dark and disturbing. That's why i like them. It's pop but not sell out crap and the music is just as fresh today.

And yes as others have said, this is a german band that has nothing to do with greg lake or ELP.. If you really like this check out star castle an illinois band that did very similar music.

5 out of 5 stars Two awesome rock albums from a long-forgotten band........2007-01-09

I don't think that Lake received a lot of US airplay when they were in their heyday, but K-SHE 95 in St. Louis played them a fair amount, and they were in concert in St. Louis in '79 or '80, I think. Germany was the home of Lake, and they were fairly popular over there.

This CD combines Lake's first commercial release in the US (Lake) with "Paradise Lake", so you really get a double-barrel shot of some of the best music that Lake produced (if you were to get "Lake 2" as well as "Ouch", you'd nicely complete all of their best stuff).

For those who are new to Lake or not sure if they have heard them or not, Lake is not to be confused with Emerson, Lake and Palmer. Lake has a somewhat older Styx-like sound, combining progressive rock with bluesy classic rock. "Between The Lines" is an awesome prog-rock track, a long song with a classical instrumental interlude using guitars, keyboards and synthesizers.

If you were to get a first taste of Lake, this would be a very good pick. Some of their best music is on this double CD, and I can't think of a song I don't like out of all 16 tracks...and for a decent price!

5 out of 5 stars Great Grandma likes Lake too........2006-09-04

I had the priviledge of raising eight kids in St. Louis from the late 60's to the early 80's. So, it stands to reason that I was exposed to a lot of 70's rock. I came to appreciate Santana, Elton, Kansas, The Little River Band, Jefferson Airplain/Starship, etc etc. It wasn't, however, until 2000 that I heard Lake. I was visiting my adult daughter in Charleston, and she was playing her version of nostalgia and Lake was included. WOW! I love the harmonies and especially the lyrics. Unlike a previous reviewer, my favorite is "Jesus Came Down". Not weak, but a timeless comentary on what's going on globally. Don't know if this group is still kickin', but if I ever get my act together and write a screenplay that's buzzing around in my head, Lake will be the music to underscroe the message. I'm old as dirt, but I know good music when I hear it (any genre). If anybody has the lyrics to "Jesus . . .", I'd sure like a copy. Haven't been able to track them down just yet. Love and Smiles.

3 out of 5 stars Great musicianship, but WAY dated.........2006-04-02

1977 was a time in my life when just about all things were wonderful. I was (honorably!) released from the Army in April, and that set the tone for the rest of the year. I began my 15-year "career" in insurance, my girlfriend favored Kate Jackson (upon whom, I STILL have a crush!), and my band began its asendency toward being the top Atlanta "party" band. I'm babbling, yes, but all that, sort of, sets up the tone of my "take" on "Lake" (sorry...I apologize for the rhyme there): I distinctly remember driving to a gig, pleasantly stoned, in August, listening to one of Atlanta's nascent "FM-album rock" stations. Just as I pulled up to our drummer's house, that marvelous synthesizer-clavinet riff that intros "On The Run" began, and I was literally stultified for the three-plus minutes it played. The next day, after work and still nursing a vicious hangover from the evening before, I purchased "Lake." And, again, "On The Run" transfixed me. The rest of the album, though, was PURE LATE SEVENTIES: "wee-wee-diddly-diddly-lead" guitar, shrieking high pitched lead vocals, excessive synthesizers, and the drummer must've been using 2 bass drums, the single-stroke rolls being so...well, "excessive." Still, I bought the ticket and I took the ride - and I still can't believe how happy I was last year, when I discovered "Lake" was now avilable on CD. Buy this CD, folks, it's a very pleasant time-warp - and, NO, Kent, I am NOT going to sully this "review" with a gratuitous comparison to (blgh) "Kansas" - although I do grudgingly have to admit that "Lake" DID sound sort of like a...European version of "Kansas."

Product Description

In 1969, looking to expand the labels musical horizons, A&M co-founder Jerry Moss met with Chris Blackwell, whose Island Records roster included a plethora of cutting-edge acts including Traffic, Fairport Convention, Cat Stevens and Jimmy Cliff, amongst others. Through a licensing agreement with Island, A&M obtained Cliff. In 1970, Jimmy Cliff delivered reggae to America. It was the first time that a major label would test the airwaves and retail with an unproven foreign musical genre. Despite a top 25 single (the title track), the albums reception stateside was fairly cool, and Wonderful World, Beautiful People would be Cliffs only A&M release. These recordings were made between 1967 and 1971 for Island Records in the UK, the label to which Jimmy Cliff was signed. Our motivation is to illuminate how Jimmy Cliff and by extension, reggae was presented in the U.S. prior to the breakthrough of The Harder They Come by the one album A&M Records released and the three they chose not to. Ironically, if Jimmy Cliff had never written and recorded Many Rivers to Cross, which was on the Wonderful World, Beautiful People album, Cliff would never have come to star in The Harder They Come, which heralded reggaes breakthrough in America. And without Harder, Bob Marley might never have transformed from a regional star into an international artist, thus precluding Eric Claptons I Shot the Sheriff and the reggae-influenced rock of The Police (a staple of the A&M catalogue). Exquisitely packaged in an embossed book loaded with rare photos and extensive notes, the 46 recordings gathered here show an artist on the verge of conquering the world.

4 out of 5 stars Finally! More To The Story - And The Best Telling So Far.......2006-02-08

For as great as Jimmy Cliff was in the late '60s and early '70s, he wasn't well represented in the US. Beyond 'The Harder They Come' soundtrack and the 'Wonderful World, Beautiful People' album, it was daunting to track down Cliff's releases, most of which were coming from the UK.

While this box set doesn't completely fill the void, it does the best job of any out there.

It's a wonky collection, but if you read through the set producer's notes (there are 3 of them!), it starts to make sense. Here's the gist: Between 1969 and 1971 Island Records in the UK (Jimmy's label there) sent four albums' worth of songs to A&M Records in the US (Jimmy's label here). Only one of the four albums was released - 'Wonderful World, Beautiful People.'

This box set presents all that material in one place.

Disc One is 'Wonderful World, Beautiful People' appended with b-side "Waterfall."

Disc Two would probably have been (in old school record days) the 'Wild World' album. It opens with that hit from 1970 and follows it with a brace of Cliff's recordings for Island from 1967 onward - some released as singles (Aim & Ambition, I've Got A Feeling) and some not released at all (Honey Hush).

Disc Three is the 'Another Cycle' album. Issued as an album in the UK in '71, it's never been on CD anywhere. Here's your chance to pick it up (and is worth the price of the box itself - and is a must have for fans of the Muscle Shoals sound).

Disc Four gets a little convoluted, but the album is an early incarnation of the 'Struggling Man' album. Hip-O Select fleshed out the disc by adding the songs that later ended up on 'Struggling Man' proper, so this is a way to get a nice remaster of that album (albeit in a different song order).

But explanation or not, this is a phenomenal set of great music from a great artist at the zenith of his career. Pick up this and the 'Goodbye Yesterday' album, also from Hip-O Select, for more music from this period.

4 out of 5 stars Almost the Real Thing.......2003-05-12

This cd is a nice addition to the Sounds of the Earth collection. The sounds of birds and water is relaxing and soothing. It kind of makes you feel like your at a private beach and you're lying down in the chair listening to the natural sounds around you. A small downside is that the sounds of the animals get a bit too loud. It sounds like they are right above your head and it sometimes breaks the solitude. But other than that, this is a fine cd.

I adore Caterina Valente, and I truly feel that she is one of the most gifted musicians of this century. Unfortunately, I was born too late to hear her in the 60s, so it's interesting to hear this archive. However, it sounds as if it was recorded with someone's portable 60s reel-to-reel, with a mic sitting somewhere next to a martini glass. Stereo? Forget it. Miss Valente's live performances are better documented on the Bear Family box sets--which are worth every penny.

    Album Description

Island Breeze takes you on a journey to paradise with white sandy beaches with red orange sunsets setting on shimmering blue waters. Romero's music is like a fine Cubano cigar that is smooth, spicy and lingers in the air. Romero has a contemporary voice of his own that shines in this cd which contains all original material. His percussive style of piano playing is combined with melodies that stick. Along with piano Island Breeze is long on saxophone, batas, congas, flutes and other sounds of the Islands.

5 out of 5 stars Involving and relaxing.......1999-03-20

This has got to be one of the best of my CD collection. The music can either be very relaxing or involving, depending on the active attention you pay to it. It can be a great background mood highlighter, or else a swinging jazz experience. Whenever I listen to the CD, I always catch myself swaying to the great melodies. Great job, Romero!

After purchasing this groups previous CD of steel drum music I was very excited to hear that they were recording a Christmas album. It's a different kind of Christmas sound, instead of feeling like I should be sitting in front of the fire with hot chocolate, I feel like I should be sitting on the beach with a lemonade. It's a new sound that is refreshing and fun!
