POWERFUL VOICES.......2006-02-28
Young tenors at their individual and collective best. Powerful, dynamic, and emotionally charged performance.
Good selection of vocal works for the newcomer, some light, some heavy.
Best discovery in music in a quite some time........2005-07-08
I happened to see this ensemble perform in concert on PBS one night last winter during a fund raiser.
All that I can say is, "Wow".
Since that time I have purchased this CD for myself and as gift to three other music lovers; all of which have offered me their gratitude.
It is not very often that a musical experience of skill and talent surfaces. They hold us within the magic of voice, combined with musical stanzas and lyric, and the chemistry of TEAMWORK.
The gentlemen excel in such offerings as Vangelis' "Conquest of Paradise", "World Anthem", and the melancholy Irish "Thunderpoint", which sends chills down my spine.
If I can choose one group to open the next Olympics celebration it is The Ten Tenors.
I can only hope that they broaden their US tour.
I can also only hope that they continue to produce and record more albums.
Bravo
Larger Than Life.......2005-07-04
Yes, clearly the name alone is a homage/copy from the Three Tenors and, no, they aren't as operatic as the others. However, they are 10 guys who sing a cross between choir, Broadway, opera and a capella. That said, you'll find these guys encapitvating. First of all, the operatic aspect is a misnomer, because when they're having fun, they're at their best. Listen to them do their Dancing Queen Melody. Not only is it well done, it's fun and hysterical.
This all said, the CD contains a bonus DVD disc, which in my opinion blows away the CD. Not that it's as well produced; however, you need to see these 10 guys interact to get the idea of how good they are. Their faces express the emotion, as all 10 of them work together to take you across various musical genres. Their interaction is what makes them special, which is why I say, "Buy this CD for the DVD"
very good.......2005-07-04
Delta Air Lines featured most of this album on thier in-flight audio, and I heard it on a long flight and its equally long return. Bought the album after that. Not a fan of opera, classical, or pop, I was surprised to find that The Ten Tenors did all of these better then any of the three genres' more popular artists. I enjoy the album and recommend it as adult contemporary.
"brilliant arrangements and performances ~ The Ten Tenors".......2004-10-23
Rhino Records presents not just Three Tenors or Irish Tenors...but the latest surprise on the classical scene is The Ten Tenors with their new album "Larger Than Life", featuring a fourteen track compact disc and four cue bonus Live DVD...Australian gentlemen who will thrill you with classical vocal repertoire of ballads and even a classic rock tune or two.
Students in 1995 studying opera classics, they performed in 1998 while attending the University and began touring...haven't stopped since ~ their individuality and comradeship with close touching harmony will soon grab you and never let go ~ outstanding performances "STONDE" [Patrick Abrial/Jean Marc Grossi/Thierry Micaelli], beautiful beyond words, "POR UNA CABEZA" [Carlos Gardel/Alfredo Le Para], the tango from the film "Scent Of A Woman", the vocal is extraordinary, "SUNDANCE" [Andy Arthurs/Philip Chambon], folk genre beat with tempos that get completely under your skin, terrific arrangements by the composer, "DESTINY LIES" [Craig Atkinson/Stewart Morris], lead vocal by Jason Turbull reads like a Top Ten New Age Hit, full orchestra and chorus abound ~ "CONQUEST OF PARADISE" [Vangelis], non stop harmony and brilliant orchestration with the full voices of The Ten Tenors, enough power to light up a big city block ~ "BICYCLE RACE" [Freddie Mercury], the ultimate big hit of Queen, brilliant arrangements by Shannon Brown and Drew Graham.
If you love classical and outstanding vocals by young talent, then this one has your name on it...watch out world here comes some of the best of the best around today...hats off to Rhino and Warner Bros. for this one of a kind release...hope to see more of the same...piano, arranger and synthesizer by Steven Baker..the DVD is really a trip and a half...great job by one and all ~ The Ten Tenors

Album Description
Danny Boyle (28 Days Later, Trainspotting) once again reinvents the cinematic experience with a heartwarming story of two little boys, faith, miracles...and lots of money. Starting anew after the death of their mother, 9-year-old Anthony is ever practical, while his 7-year old brother Damian uses imagination, fantasy, and faith to make sense of his confusing world. When a suitcase full of money falls out of the sky at Damien's feet, it sets the boys on the adventure of a lifetime that leads them to realize that true wealth has nothing to do with money. Featuring original score by John Murphy, "TUMBLE AND FALL" by Feeder, "BRAZIL" by S'Express, and the film's signature song "NIRVANA" by El Bosco.

A mantra for love.......2007-05-19
Whole disc it is beutiful, the movie too. But, the song Nirvana is the most beautiful song that a lot of people can hear. Its a kind of mix of apocaliptic premonition with love song. Chorus like it were came from the sky by angels. Really, beautiful song for all kind of liking.
Brilliant!!.......2007-05-12
The soundtrack and the film are both brilliant!! The touching tracks on the soundtrack help you remember what it feels like to be a child. Imagination. That is what is missing from today's society and that is what Millions helps us recapture!!

This compilation of previous releases is clearly intended to include something for everybody and to offer an overview of Kathleen Battle's wide, varied repertoire. The result is a motley assortment of music sacred and profane, Baroque, classical and romantic, Spanish and American folksongs, and jazz. It is Battle's radiant, impeccably produced voice, which sheds a glow over every note she sings, and her effortless coloratura and serene expressiveness that provide the unifying, and most rewarding, element.
Four new recordings sound just as glorious as those she made years ago. One is the famous aria from Puccini's Gianni Schicchi performed with piano--a strange misfit among all the arias with orchestra. Wynton Marsalis plays Bach and Handel brilliantly, but sounds too loud and prominent. And despite some baroque ornamentation, he plays in a style so different from hers that the two hardly seem to be performing the same piece. The Orchestra of St. Luke's plays beautifully; an anonymous orchestra under Robert Sadin is competent but too matter-of-fact. A mournful, repetitive duet with Jessye Norman against a background of unearthly noises from Vangelis's Mythodea sounds like an angelic plea for mercy.
In the finale of Mahler's Fourth Symphony with the Vienna Philharmonic under Lorin Maazel, Battle captures just the right blend of childlike wonder and heavenly bliss. Of the jazz numbers, one by Duke Ellington is lovely, but Dvorák would have been quite surprised by the arrangement of the Largo from his "New World" Symphony. However, the tonality is right, and Battle sings the melody so beautifully that she almost redeems it. --Edith Eisler
Customer Reviews:
Eh..........2006-12-10
Kathleen Battle is admirable, with her many recordings and her many performances across the country. But, I cannot say that I adore her voice. Yes, she may be a soprano, but her voice is not top of my list. Her technique is flawed, and her voice lacks any depth or richness. When I listen to her voice, it sounds so empty. Singers like Sumi Jo (my favorite of all) or Renee Fleming are a much better choice when it comes to rich tone and beautiful technique.
The vocal phenomenon that is Kathleen Battle.......2003-11-18
An excellent compilation of some of Miss Battle's greatest work. Of course, it would have been great if more of her operatic literature was included, but to have the opportunity to hear anything from Miss Battle is heaven.
Bravissima Diva!!!!.......2002-07-03
I must comment on the preceeding review which has nothing to do with the calibur of this CD nor of the artist. And just a touch on that whole Brevard "incident", there were two performances one of which came off without a fault...but I too digress. This CD is a plethera of what endures Kathleen Battle to us all...her diversity. It is true that none of her signature operatic roles appear in this mini compilation but what is given more than accomodates. In 18 selections she covers Spirituals, Oratorio, Jazz, Afro-Cuban/Brazilian influenced melodies, cantata's and a symphony all with miraculous ease. It is also true that this is in many ways a best of...and chances are you'll already have most of these pieces, but Classic Kathleen Battle is Worth Buying simply for the four new selections and accompanying art of the set. The pictorial art included in this CD is worthy of gallery display! A standing testament of her vocal beauty and artist superlatives...this is a CD that you don't want to pass up!
Battle shows her true colors yet again.......2002-06-27
I have followed Ms. Battle's career for a number of years and have always loved the clarity and purity of her voice--no doubt she is a tremendous talent. Several years ago I saw her give a stunning concert at UNC-Chapel Hill and was blown away at the thrill of finally experiencing her voice live. I always thought it unfortunate that so many negative stories about her flourished and subsequently found myself coming to her defense in conversation with others. Last summer I had tickets to see her sing at Brevard Music Center in the mountains of North Carolina. Several nights prior to this performance, my 20-year-old nephew was killed in a car accident. I decided to go ahead with my plans and attend the concert, thinking it would be a sort of balm for my soul after living through this terrible experience of losing someone I loved. Immediately after my nephew's funeral I left my family behind and drove the five hours to the concert venue. Needless to say I had incredibly high hopes for this concert and its potential to help heal my wounds. Long story short, Ms. Battle behaved in the most unprofessional manner I have ever witnessed and refused to perform the program as planned. What little she did offer to the audience was mediocre at best. A packed house of patrons was left stunned and dismayed at what they'd just witnessed. So, Ms. Battle, you proved to me in a very personal way that all the stories are true and you have serious issues. I will not be buying your recordings in the future and I currently have about 20 that are now worthless to me.
Praiseworthy, but a limited perspective.......2002-06-04
CLASSIC KATHLEEN BATTLE: A PORTRAIT is limited in its perspective in the sense that this is a compilation of only SONY Classical recordings from their catalog. There are no Deutsche Grammophon or Angel/EMI performances represented here. A "portrait" of Miss Battle would have rightly included some of these wonderful and musical interpretations of Mozart, Schubert, Villa-Lobos, Gounod, and Bach among others. Of course paying the license fees from the other 2 labels wouldn't be cost-efficient from a record company's standpoint. How wonderful this would've been if they'd all cooperated on a box set of her recordings, which would show Miss Battle's superlative musicality in not only Italian and French, but also her great wit and charm in the English language (her Purcell and Dowland are not to be missed!)
In any case there are several magical performances to be found here:
Puccini's "O Mio Babbino Caro" w/piano; Dormi, Jesu; Cancion de Cuna, Fix Me Jesus, Ellington's "Prelude to a Kiss"; Angels Watching Over Me; and the enchanting song (the German title is too long for me to remember--it's from the Das Knaben Wunderhorn cycle) from Mahler's 4th Symphony.
For any Kathleen Battle fan, this is a nice selection of her works, but only a 2-dimensional portrait at best. Certainly not Miss Battle's fault, as she graces the listener with no less than FOUR new recordings on this album.
Once again her silvery tones and superb musicality are a wonderful gift to us!
Thank you, and Bravo many times over....

Customer Reviews:
Quirky, Occasionally Gorgeous Proto Synth-Pop.......2004-04-01
"See You Later" is in a completely different vein from vastly better-known Vangelis works such as "Opera Sauvage" or "Chariots of Fire". Perhaps only the track "Memories of Green" is widely known, and that mainly because of its inclusion in the "Blade Runner" soundtrack.
"See You Later" was released when synth-pop was freshly emerging as a respectable genre; the album reflects some of those contemporaneous influences. At the same time, it looks both backwards, towards Vangelis's prog-rock "666" and "Earth"-styled roots; and forward, to works like "Direct" and "The City". Perhaps more than on any other album, Vangelis sets loose a quirky sense of humor here, particularly on "Not a Bit, All of It", a frankly surreal piece which may [or may not?] address consumerism and/or the fashion industry.
"Multi-Track Suggestion" is the standout on the record (aside from "Memories of Green", which again is probably familiar to even casual listeners from the "Blade Runner" soundtrack). "Suggestion" gives off hints of Kraftwerk, and perhaps a few other late-1970s/early 80s synth pioneers; but it also radiates a sumptuousness and sensuality which were then, and still are, rarely found in electronic music. Vangelis's gifts for timeless melodies, and his widely-noted integration of acoustic and synthetic textures, was rarely better either before or after "See you Later".
This album would likely annoy or dissapoint someone new to the music of Vangelis. However, if you've already heard all the so-called "classic" Vangelis albums, and find yourself wanting more, this is a great place to start.
A sountrack for.....................2003-12-23
The music of Vangelis can be described as a film soundtrack without the film. In many cases his music has been used for film even though that was not its original intended use. When people hear "Heaven & Hell" they immediately think of Carl Sagan's celebrated tv series "Cosmos", or "L'Enfant" they think of Peter Weir's oscar winning "The Year of Living Dangerously" starring Mel Gibson. Now having heard "See You Later," Vangelis proves once again how cinematic his music is.
"I Can't Take It Anymore"
-A very nice little electronic song. Sounds like a machine successfully breaking free.
"Multi Track Suggestion"
-A somewhat downbeat tune. Not one of the album's better efforts.
"Memories of Green"
-A Classic!!!! A sad, reflective, sentimental and haunting piece. One of his best ever. Ridley Scott used it brilliantly in a scene where Rachel and Deckard come to terms with their humanity or lack there of in "Bladerunner"
"Not A Bit - All of it "
-A very quirky but catchy song. Sounds as if it came out of a TV broadcast from the world of Terry Gilliam's "Brazil".
"Suffocation"
-A nice 1980's electronic song. A bit dated but good nonetheless featuring vocals by Jon Anderson.
"See You Later"
-A story within a song without having to use lyrics. A piece that gives you a sense of movement then climaxs to a calming revelation. Sort of experimental but doesn't necessarily succeed for me. But I admire the effort.
Vangelis in A Different Light ?.......2000-10-01
At first listen, the concept behind this album is difficult to grasp since most of Vangelis' works have little to do with social commentary or global issues. Also, this album is a transition into new territory with hints of jazz and electro-funk. The real gem is the track Memories of Green with it's piano and bleeping-like siren sounds. For all the listener knows the effects could probably be a life support machine chirping away. It sets the mood for a melancholy western-saloon theme in a futuristic world( it almost feels out of place yet offers a tranquil atmosphere against the other compositions). Memories was featured in the sci-fi film cult hit BladeRunner in reference to the replicants in the film with implanted/artificial memories. The social commentary on Not A Bit, All Of It is a quirky look into the excesses of the world of glamour and glitz, consumerism, commercialism, and the media (materialism in Hollywood ?).The rest of the music has an almost half-finished studio feel or outtake (it is not an over-the-top orchestrated album at all).
See You Later feels more like an E.P. (mini-album or "experimental project")! It is also a rare find at most c.d. shops (import). Any Vangelis fan should check this title out...
Overlooked gem.......2000-07-02
Those fans of Vangelis who are more familiar - or at least more comfortable - with some of his lush film scores or the gentler thematic suites (Voices, Oceanic, El Greko) might be surprised to find the content on this album. In some ways it bridges the early Vangelis, a founding member of the European supergroup Aphrodite's Child who did concept albums like 666, and the Vangelis of the late eighties who produced the amazing improvisatorial "Direct", and pounding electropop rhythms in the Blade Runner end titles. His side career of composer/producer for a huge range of European pop stars is perhaps also a pointer to this album, a largely unbuttoned and humorous view of a dystopic (dyspeptic?:-) ) future.
A highlight of the album is the original version of the very very very beautiful piano piece "Memories of Green". Supposedly director Ridley Scott's favourite piece of music - he used it in "Someone to watch over me" and "Blade Runner."
None of the other pieces are collected elsewhere, and should be sampled for informing further discoveries of Vangelis' 35+ year career at the forefront of musical discovery.
Vangelis with vocals and humor.......1999-09-19
At one time, extremely obscure but so deserving of more recognition. It's among my most favorite Vangelis works. The tracks are distinct songs rather than an epic composition. Novice Vangelis listeners will find the entire CD easy to like; fans won't be disappointed.
