Offering a very scenic sort of modern, chamberlike music characterized by the genteel interaction of oboes, clarinets, saxophone, violins, cello, and piano, Roger Eno's sixth solo album is a disarming, beguiling affair. Presenting 18 refined instrumental selections, some improvised, some structured, nearly all quite brief and suggestive of something cinematic, The Flatlands offers an intelligent charm and an admirably subdued sense of stateliness. Eno is joined by 10 additional musicians (including fellow Channel Light Vessel collaborator Kate St. John) on this project, though little additional information is yielded by the CD booklet. Instead, its eight pages are devoted almost entirely to evocatively abstract photography, a fitting aesthetic flourish. The album's overall mood is that of a deeply shaded forest floor, with shifting slivers of radiance penetrating the thick canopy of melancholy. Its subtle, elusive beauty grows more evident with each listening. "I was interested in the intimate textures that a chamber group allows, the accidents that chance brings with it and how apparently mutable time can appear," Eno states in the album's press notes. "In short, I wished to make a record which was both satisfying to write and to live with, one that plays with time yet rests comfortably on the ear." Mission accomplished. --Terry Wood

4 out of 5 stars Back in between Tides.......1999-02-02

In the late eighties, Roger Eno released his second album on big brother's label EG Editions, it was titled "Between tides". It had some joyful melancholy and had the Roger rather than Brian style. Flatlands reminds me of it. Much more interesting in my point of... uh... hearing, than his more classical pieces, these Flatlands take us back to good old cheerful melancholy. I can't stop playing it. If you meet Roger tell him for me.

    Album Description

Roger Eno is primarily known as an "ambient" composer through his collaborations with his brother Brian and producers Michael Brook and Daniel Lanois, but his depth as a musician defies categorization. A multi-instrumentalist, Eno has composed many memorable scores for film and TV including Dune and Nine And A Half Weeks. The Flatlands (originally released in 1998) offers a very modern take on chamber music, featuring 18 refined instrumental selections, some improvised, some structured, nearly all quite brief and suggestive of something cinematic. Its subtle, elusive beauty grows more evident with each listening.

5 out of 5 stars Don Williams only improves with time.......2003-02-20

This is one of the albums Don recorded on an independent label after radio (stupidly) stopped playing his music, but rest assured, it ranks with his finest work. The song selection, performance and arrangements are, as always with Don, absolutely superb. "Leaving For The Flatlands" is one of his best tunes in a folk-song style, and Bob McDill's "Shadow Land," with its haunting Celtic touches and evocative lyrics about an adult's memories of family problems he didn't understand as a child, is one of the most moving and beautiful songs I've heard in years. If you are a Don Williams fan, or you appreciate songcraft at a level you seldom see these days, then you won't regret buying this album.

ENGLISH IMPORT - "Released in 2006, Flatlands Vermuyden could easily fit within the sonic margins situated by genre stalwarts ISIS or Neurosis. At the same time, this bass-heavy meandering 6-track EP takes on a definitely rawer edge in execution and production than its predecessors. Overall, this fledgling UK band does well to attract diverse audiences supplementary to the average post-rock/doom-sludge crowd that seems all too frequent today. If given the proper prologue, it would not be stretching to foreshadow great things in this band s future. The first minute and a half provides the gloomy backdrop to which Flatlands so proficiently sets forth across the rest of Vermuyden. The band does an excellent job meshing rich, heavy bass with layered guitars and an obscure drumming array to create a constantly progressing animal. Indeed, the band has done their homework as the songs on Vermuyden ebb and flow as if alive--surging instances of sonic mass intertwine with moments of atmospheric subtlety to create their own unique sound. Each song slowly evolves to include both the harsh and the melodic to create a combination like few other bands. Overall, it s apparent that the band strives to break away from the tired heavy segment followed by a melodic segment formula, but instead do a stand-up job of blending both elements competently while slowly building momentum throughout the span of the (respective) song. The vocals are consistently abrasive (maybe too harsh in places), but are heard in relatively small doses. The drumming is not entirely pronounced, but has a cadence style theme in multiple places that fits well. In time, Flatlands could easily develop into a band with a style that stands out from the weary masses striving to do something different." - Sonic Frontiers
