In addition to raising public consciousness about the dangers of nuclear power, the 1979 series of star-studded anti-nuclear concerts at Madison Square Garden were a significant event both musically and historically. The shows were immortalized in a feature film and on this 2 CD set. Among those featured on the album are such '70s soft-rock icons as Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, James Taylor, Carly Simon, the Doobie Brothers, and Crosby, Stills and Nash, along with Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, Ry Cooder, and Gil Scott-Heron for a token dose of grit. Inevitably, Springsteen's "Devil with the Blue Dress Medley" steals the show, but otherwise No Nukes doubles as both a handy '70s-rock sampler and a historical keepsake. --Scott Schinder

5 out of 5 stars Words to live by today.......2007-03-09

Given the state of the Earth today, the sentiments of many of these songs are still current. This is an amazing collection of artists and songs - no matter how old you are!

2 out of 5 stars I really wanted to rate it higher.......2006-07-12

I really liked this when it came ut on vinyl, but in retrospect, it was the cause, not the music. B. Raitt is grand, G Nash with an excellant Cathedral, J C Young, and the highlight to me We Almost Lost Detroit by the great Gil Scott-Heron. But the second disc is second rate. Edit the filler and it rates higher.

5 out of 5 stars Heartwarming thoughts of childhood.......2005-09-15

As a child of the 70's who grew up in a very "no nukes" home this album was on the turn table every night. What a great find for me all these years later as I start my own family. "Power" is one of the nicest, smoothest, most heartwarming songs every performed.

The geniune love, care and respect these artists had for each other and mostly the earth and it's future generations pours through on every note.

4 out of 5 stars fighting fission with fusion.......2005-03-23

I suppose just about anyone could find a reason to give a listen to the 'No Nukes' recordings. For many, some of the earliest and most blistering live tracks from Bruce Springsteen, still on his career ascent, which are offered here are reason enough to own these discs, even if he shares CD space with Chaka Khan. Others may find their appeal in the workmanlike presence of Graham Nash, Jackson Browne, James Taylor, and The Doobie Brothers, who perform solo and are all over the place singing duets and background for other performers willing to ante-up in the fight against fission. Despite my own appreciation for Crosby, Stills and Nash, what really caught my eye here was what amounts to a cameo appearance by Gil Scott-Heron, offering up one of his finest moments (and as a Detroiter one I can readily identify with) on the ominous yet funkified 'We Almost Lost Detroit'. Next to 'Johannasburg' this is my favorite Gil Scott-Heron composition. Unfortunately, it appears on a wonderful, but unreleased CD Scott-Heron produced in 1977 with Brian Jackson, 'Bridges'. It tells a slightly overblown tale about a malfunction at one of the two Fermi nuclear plants near Detroit. While the mishap could have theoretically progressed into a full-blown meltdown, the generator was quickly shut down and catastrophe was readily averted. So while it didn't come close to producing a Chernobyl, it did produce one funky protest song, and Scott-Heron gives it an inspired treatment on 'No Nukes'

1979 was a strange, transitional year in music. Disco was all but dead, yet it's brief success had ushered in a retreat from the expansive progressive rock that had enshrined the late 1960's and early 1970's. Something new had to be on the horizon, even with Bruce Springsteen assuming the role of heir apparent to those who would proclaim (along with Neil Young) that "rock and roll will never die". No one could have predicted, however, that even for Neil Young, the 1980's would plunge rock and roll even deeper into an abyss of ill-employed synthesizers, and open the door for a reborn Michael Jackson and the birth of a Madonna as the dominant forces on vinyl and cassette.

So 'No Nukes' offers one last gasp for the faithful few from the golden age of rock and roll who had somehow weathered the disco storm. Virtually all of the performers are in their prime, and some, such as Nicolete Larson, Raydio, Tom Petty, and even Bonnie Raitt, are able to truck in some pretty recent hit material. The Doobie Brothers, who open and close the set presented here, are in top form as well. The Crosby, Stills and Nash tracks sound a bit dated, even though they are preceded by Springsteen's covers of four songs that pre-date anything CSN offer up. There is more crowd noise on the softer tracks than one would wish (why would anyone even want to unleash a two-fingered whistle in the middle of a song like 'You Don't Have To Cry' anyway?). But the boys do serve up an edgy 'Long Time Gone', whose lyrics settle well with the MUSE (Musicians United for Safe Energy) theme. Some of the tracks, such as CSN's closer, 'Teach Your Children', and Jesse Colin Young's Youngblood's classic 'Get Together' are marred by the dreaded audience sing-a-long... a nice one-time experience for the audience, but torture for the owner of the recording who must listen to a mass of amateurs singing like a tone-deaf choir over and over and over...

While everyone can find something to like on 'No Nukes', it's also likely that it's wide range of artists and genre's will guarantee there is something you won't like. While most of the tracks were either hits (consider James Taylor and Carly Simon belting out a live version of 'Mockingbird') or the main attraction on studio LP's (Jackson Browne's 'Before the Deluge'), some out-of-the-mainstream material also appears, such as John Hall's 'Plutonium Is Forever', which lends a sarcastic twist of the knife into the nuclear power industry's back. Predictably some tracks that look good on paper come across uninspired, such as the James Taylor-Carly Simon-Graham Nash take on Dylan's 'The Times They Are A-Changin' and Ry Cooder's 'Little Sister', which you keep waiting to take off but just keeps circling the tarmac.

The liner notes are extensive, but oriented toward an indoctrination for the 'No Nukes' agenda rather than commentary and anecdotes surrounding these Madison Garden concerts. If this was all the information you had, you would undoubtedly conclude Jimmy Carter was a fool for not installing a line of windmills along the Continental Divide, and a massive array of solar panels covering the southwestern U.S. Oh, well, at least it gave some of these soon-to-be-out-of-work artists one last excuse to fuse their talents before they turned out the lights on the 70's (pun intended). Four stars 'cause Stephen plays some wicked guitar, but I may be straining my credibility.

5 out of 5 stars Worth it for "Power" alone.......2004-01-10

The other reviewers are right...but, the best tune on this set is "Power" a collaboration of friends making great music. I had the original lp and now am getting the cd... I just love the harmonies here... don't miss this.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Of Gilbert And Sullivan.......2004-03-15

At the end of the 19th century (1870's, 80's and 90's) the compatible duo of librettist and composer Gilbert and Sullivan popularized the pre-Broadway entertainment of Savoy opera. These were light operas or operettas whose content was satire and comedy, full of bouncy melodies and beautiful singing, highly entertaining theatrical works staged at London's Savoy theatre. Gilbert and Sullivan did not always get along and in fact there was a time when they ended their professional relationship because personal conflicts surfaced. But they managed to create the world's most beloved light operas, over 40 of them. Their most famous are what I call the Big Three- The H.M.S. Pinafore, The Pirates Of Penzance and The Mikado. Other works include their first hit Trial By Jury, The Yeomen Of The Guard, Princess Ida, The Gondoliers, Patience and several others. A standard signature of Gilbert and Sullivan was in the colorful cast- a comic actor with a special kind of baritone voice, a canary-like and sweet-voiced coloratura or lyric diva, a mezzo soprano with strong chest register and a lyric tenor as the romantic hero. On this album, English conductor Sir Charles Mackerras, a popular figure in the classical music scene and opera, guides the Chorus and Orchestra Of the Welsh National Opera in generally well-delivered performances of excerpts from the operas The Mikado, The H.M.S. Pinafore, The Pirates Of Penzance, Yeomen Of The Guard and Trial By Jury. Although I feel that the recordings made by the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, with Isodore Godfrey conducting and starring the best cast of the Gilbert and Sullivan repertoire- the singers of the 60's and 70's- tenor Phillip Potter, soprano Valerie Masterson, baritone John Reed, Donald Adams and mezzo soprano Christine Palmer. Their version of the Pirates Of Penzance and the Mikado far outshine the Welsh National Opera in technical mastery and vibrant tone color.

But these are fine excerpts. Especially appealing is the famous and cheerful "Three Little Maids From School Are We", a trio that imitates Japanese style melody. Most of the Mikado does this, for it was inspired by Japanisme or the new fashion in Victorian England- everything Japanese, from prints to paintings to poetry. Gilbert and Sullivan simply "Japanized" their English operettas. The Finale "For He's Gone To Marry Yum Yum" is an ebullient and pleasant finale. Not featured here is the domineering and powerful Katisha, a figure who stands out in the Mikado.

The H.M.S. Pinafore is Gilbert and Sullivan's most popular work. The sea chanty "We Sail The Ocean Blue" opens the opera with appropriate atmosphere and it seems to fit perfectly with the other scene in which the Captain greets his crew and they sing his praises "My Gallant Crew..I am the Captain Of The Pinafore". A beautiful melody that seems to come out of a romantic Offenbach tune is "I"m Called Little Buttercup". The finale, not featured here, is also very engaging "For He Is An Englishman" which can almost resemble a British national anthem. The Yeomen Of The Guard was Gilbert and Sullivan's "serious opera" eventhough it remains very Savoyard. The plot deals with Tudor England and takes place at the London Tower. "I have a song to sing" makes use of what can be taken for an English ballad of the Renaissance. Trial By Jury, about the eccentric and hilarious activity of a court trial, has a sextet that although different in composition, has the sextet "Che Mi Frena" from Donizetti's Lucia Di Lammermoor in mind. All in all, an excellent recording sure to delight young and old.

5 out of 5 stars Pure delight.......2003-08-02

--Gilbert & Sullivan--
William Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan were a match made in heaven, yet on earth their pairing seems even with hindsight a most unlikely coupling. Both were destined for other things, Gilbert in fact for decidedly non-musical careers. Introduced by a mutual friend, Fred Clay, the fledgling lyricist Gilbert met the military-band-leader's son Sullivan and together continued to conspire to inspire the delights of audiences from high Victorian times down to the present, as their work in musical theatre comedy continues to provide merriment throughout the English-speaking world and beyond.

--The Music--
This collection includes highlights from five of the most popular Gilbert & Sullivan operettas: The Mikado, HMS Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance, The Yeoman of the Guard, and Trial by Jury. The arrangements and orchestrations are delightfully energetic and clear; the characterisation and vocal qualities of the leads are perfect for their roles. The haughty if misplaced Lord of the Admiralty has the perfect combination of insecurity and pompous officiousness. The Plaintiff and the Defendant in the Trial are perfectly cast. This is a collection of highlights - at least three but no more than seven songs each, but this gives a good flavour of the music. The recordings on this collection come from complete performances by Mackerras and the WNO.

--Sir Charles Mackerras--
Mackerras is one of the geniuses of the twentieth century musical scene. Having a conducting career that includes the Hamburg Opera, the English National Opera (formerly Sadlers Wells Opera), and the Welsh National Opera (the performers for this piece), he has also conducted major orchestras on the continent of Europe and in the United States. The holder of many major awards and honourary doctorates, he has devoted much time and energy to the preservation and performance of eighteenth and nineteenth century music, as well the restoration of historical musical venues, such as the Estates Theatre in Prague, scene of the original production of Don Giovanni (Mackerras conducted the opera there to commemorate the bicentenary of the death of Mozart).

--Welsh National Opera Orchestra and Chorus--
The seeds of the WNO were planted in Cardiff during World War II by music lovers; the first performances occurred a year after the war's end, with Cavalleria rusticana and Pagliacci on the bill, with Faust the next night. Popular appeal was so great that the WNO was established, later adding choruses in both Cardiff and Swansea. The professional chorus was established in 1973, with a strength that matches the orchestra. They continue an ambitious performance schedule for recording and live events; Mackerras remains the Conductor Emeritus, as the WNO continues under the direction of Carlo Rizzi. The list of awards the WNO has won over the years is staggering - they are a world class institution by any measure.

--Other performers--
Notable singers such as Richard Stuart, Rebecca Evans, Felicity Palmer, John Mark Ainsley and Anne Howells lead the chorus with stunning vocals and clever characterisations of the parts they play. Many (such as Stuart and Evans) play the leading roles across several of the pieces of the disc.

--Liner Notes--
The liner notes give a good introduction and biographical information about Gilbert and Sullivan, as well as synopses of the five pieces presented here. It does not, unfortunately, include any information about Mackerras, the WNO Orchestra and Chorus, or the other special performers. It also does not include the lyrics to the songs. Were the quality of the CD not so great, this might cost it a star in rating.

--Overall Impressions--
I play this CD in my car, in my home and in my office frequently. It is a great sing-along work and a great comedic relief from the stresses of the day. The music is bubbly and clear; the recording quality is excellent and crisp. I recommend this to any Gilbert & Sullivan lover, any fan of musical comedy, opera and operettas, and anyone who delights in good music.

5 out of 5 stars Delicious G&S samplings abound here........2003-05-06

The first thing I should be saying is "What an infectuous G&S CD." Indeed this is, with this fine sampling of the peppy and bright Mackerras series. I know I have praised its "Mercedes-Benz quality" elsewhere on these pages, but that doesn't stop me from saying that everyone is in fine voice. This generously filled CD may only focus on five operas, but at least you can savour a reasonable choice sampling of delights from each one. Of particular interest is Richard Suart's patter-baritone parts and the soaring lyric soprano of Rebecca Evans. The selection on this disc is filled with a mixture of familiar favourites and lesser-known gems such as the female choruses in Mikado and Pirates. Mackerras is a true G&S conductor, but one who always springs rhythms crisply, and adopts peppy tempo for the fast bits. The one drawback is that this selection is far too infectuous that you'll want to shell out money to buy the full 5-CD Mackerras cycle - an incredible bargain with most of the operas fitted onto one disc each. But still, this is at least a decent G&S sampling for beginners, capped with Steven Ledbetter's copious liner notes. It will leave you wanting to say "dammit I'm going to play it again."

5 out of 5 stars Fine Intro to G&S.......2000-12-30

This is the perfect CD for those who may not be familiar with G&S, or for the initiated who want a smattering but don't have the mother of all CD changers. The difficulty with any G&S Greatest Hits CD is determining which pieces to leave off; while one could easily point to any number equally good bits, it would be difficult to argue about the quality of the choices included. The only problem, such as it is, is that after listening to it I am usually induced to go back and listen to the whole opera anyway. The Mackerras recordings are uniformly excellent. I have read elsewhere the criticism that they are too 'operatic' for light opera. If by this it is meant that the singers are too good, then I leave it to the discretion of the listener when the singing becomes too good to be enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest records you never heard.......2007-04-28

I fell in love with the single, "Forever," the first time I heard it and thought the album was even better. I played this record so much, I just assumed everyone else was into it, too. It wasn't like anything else on the radio, which is probably why it barely cracked the charts. Still, it has terrific songs ("Princess of Little Italy" is a gem), lots of musical muscle, lots of heart, and lots of brains, too. There's some great songwriting on this record, some great imagery. Don't buy it because you like Springsteen. Don't buy it because you like "The Sopranos." Buy it because it's great.

4 out of 5 stars If Only It Didn't Become A Budget-Buster.......2006-11-15

Steve Van Zandt is probably better known today as a cast member on The Sopranos, a radio DJ with a syndicated FM show and a guitarist for Bruce Springsteen when he decides to gig with the E. Street Band.

Van Zandt had left Springsteen to form his own band and release this Stax/Volt-influenced album in 1982. The songs were loosely based on Men Without Women, a 1927 collection of short stories by Ernest Hemingway. The initial plans for the album and ensuing promotion was absolutely fantastic; an all-star cast of studio performers, a band that featured the outstanding bass player, Jean Beauvoir, and Felix Cavaliere on piano/organ, and the production of a long-form movie, with the album being the soundtrack.

But Van Zandt did not have a safety net that an established hit-maker like Springsteen could use when the project came in well over budget. Though the album received decent reviews, it could only stagger to a ranking of 118 on the Billboard 200, with the single, Forever, stopping at number 40 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The music has held up well over the ensuing 25 years and remains - depending on how one views the project - a tribute to a musician who wanted to test the bounds of innovation for his first project, or a plan closer to another Hemingway title for a short-story collection, Winner Take Nothing.

5 out of 5 stars Second best album ever.......2006-06-17

The best album and by that I mean the most important, is Darkness on the Edge of Town. Add the Jukes' horn section and Miami Steve's songwriting to Darkness and you have Men Without Women. Both albums give you the strength to carry on, to not give in, to fight. If you want to survive without compromise, whatever the cost, because anything else would be to lose yourself, buy both these records. You will never regret it. And you will survive.

5 out of 5 stars Forget Born To Run..........2005-06-23

Men Without Women, along with Southside Johnny's Hearts Of Stone, are the best albums to ever come out of Asbury Park. Just becasue they came after Bruce doesn't mean they couldn't surpass him. As complete albums, MWW and HOS top anything the Boss has done before or since.

5 out of 5 stars MIAMI STEVE HITS A HOMER THE 1ST TIME OUT.......2004-07-14

With the help of a few E-Streeters, a handful of Jukes and even a Plasmatic, Miami Steve knocks the ball out of the park on his first solo album. I was lucky enough to catch Little Steven And The Disciples Of Soul play most of this album live at The Bayou (R.I.P.) on December 19, 1982 right after picking it up on vinyl. It's a shame that it isn't properly represented on the Greatest Hits CD. For some tasty Jersey tunes, look no further.

Album Description

POWERHOUSE RECORDS PRESENTS A NEW RELEASE FROM THE NIGHTHAWKS: 'BLUE MOON IN YOUR EYE-LIVE AT THE BARNS AT WOLF : a new TWO-DISC SET (audio CD/video DVD).The release captures the Hawks during a recent high energy performance at The Barns at Wolf Trap in Vienna, Virginia - a highly regarded venue in the Washington, DC area. A POWERHOUSE LINEUP In 2004, The Nighthawks made a change to their lineup - when long time members, Mark Wenner (harp/vocals) and Pete Ragusa (drums/vocals), were joined by Paul Bell (guitar/vocals) and Johnny Castle (bass/vocals). This new lineup transformed what was already an internationally respected blues band into a highly energetic and extremely versatile musical powerhouse - leaving fans to conclude that "The Nighthawks are now the best they've ever been!" The highly graphical cover design was created by Marty Baumann. Tracks include "Woke Up This Morning" "Born In Chicago" "30 Days", "Jump Into My Fire", "Big River", Black Night", "You Don't love Me You Don't Care" "None Of That Stuff" "Soul Of A Man" "Put Your Cat Clothes On" "Walkin' After Midnight" "Same Thing" & "You Can't Judge A Book By The Cover"

4 out of 5 stars How many years ...........2007-03-12

... since "Open All Night" (actually their second album)! Nighthawks is one of best bar bands ever, but it was not easy to replace Jimmy Thackery, who quit in 1986. More recently, also Jan Zukowski left. Paul Bell and Johnny Castle are not beginners and provide very solid fret work; as a result this "Blue Moon in your eye" is Nighthawks' best effort in years. Owing to the mix of rock'n'roll/blues/rock songs, there are a few weak moments - a constant feature throughout Nighthawks' life - which may disappoint blues "hardliners", though slow blues are terrific. Great singing and drumming from Pete Ragusa.

5 out of 5 stars Southside's debut his best .......2006-03-03

Southside Johnny had been kicking around Asbury Park for anumber of years when he got the chance to record. He got a bunch of really good Springsteen and Lillte Steven songs and he had great guest artists in Lee Dorsey and especially Ronnie Spector, who is just great on the closer "You Mean So Much to Me". The title track and Springsteen's "The Fever" also very special.
Southside has done some good work since this but he has never concentrated so mush good work in one album. It's a very upbeat set of songs.

Wonderfully remastered digitally. Brings me back to his concerts from the 70s. Unique vocals, organ, lyrics, tempos. Gotta have it.

    5 out of 5 stars Southside's Debut Is Great.......2005-01-31

Southside Johnny's debut CD, I DON'T WANT TO GO HOME, is simply great. Combining the influences of the Memphis-Chicago-Muscle Shoals-St. Louis-New Orleans-Detroit-Philadelphia-Kansas City blues/R&B/rock & roll axis, fellow New Jerseyite Bruce Springsteen, doo-wop, and Van Morrison, the CD features a perfect blend of Van Zandt/Springsteen originals and R&B covers, plus such guests as Lee Dorsey and the Five Satins. The next two albums would be even better, but here, Southside is already in the big leagues.

On the surface, bandleader, songwriter, clarinetist, comedian, and (most of all) entertainer Mickey Katz is a sort of Jewish-style Spike Jones. Schmaltzy comedy and frenetic klezmer riffs combine to create humorous skits that were part borscht belt, part vaudeville. But listen here to Katz's one "straight" album--the legendary Weddings, Bar Mitzvahs and Brisses, recorded in the early '50s for Capitol--and you find a true musician who could swing with jazz's best, a guy with faultless timing and a great sense of humor. On "Frailach Jamboree," he takes the upbeat traditional klezmer pattern (the frailach) and proves he and his band have impeccable timing; the next tune takes klezmer the way of Raymond Scott, the cartoon-music pioneer; on "Simcha Time," he rounds up the whole circus--bride, groom, and family (this is music for weddings, after all)--and happily informs you that the show is going to begin. Whether he's writing cancans or covering "Sunrise, Sunset," you can't help but admire Katz's musical, and comedic, genius. Don Byron achieved acclaim for his album of Katz interpretations, Plays the Music of Mickey Katz, but this is the original thing. And what a gorgeous shtick it was, now--thankfully--reissued entirely on CD with bonus cuts from Hello, Solly, his Broadway musical, and five previously unreleased tunes. --Jason Verlinde

What a wonderful cd. If you are Jewish, you can feel your heritage. The warmth of the music and the fun is just wonderful. Even if you don't understand Yiddish, you can understand it by the feel of the music. I wish Capitol Records would release all of his albums on cd. What a treasure that would be.

I heard Mickey Katz regularly when he had a radio program in the early 1950's. This album is a wonderful example of the exciting music that he played. I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars SWING & SWAY WITH MICKEY K! Oy vey!.......1998-11-16

Well....You either love this music or you don't. If you love it, it is because of some combination of Jewish ethnicity and the enjoyment of fast, rhythmic music loaded with clarinets, fiddles, horns, and drums. You need never have gone to a Bar Mitzvah, a bris, or a Jewish wedding to get turned on by such gems as "Wedding Dance" or "Wedding Samba." Sure , this CD gets a little too schmaltzy at times, but--Be a mensch and buy it already!

2 out of 5 stars The best? I think not........2004-01-11

This disc includes some songs that, while I like them, are not what people might consider the "best" of G&S. Of course, anything by G&S is good, it's still not the "best of the best."

There has got to be something that better represents the G&S canon.

    1 out of 5 stars can't understand the words.......2004-01-08

Don't know about those other reviewers, but I just can't make out very much of the lyrics. Maybe those folk have better CD players or better hearing, but it's pretty much a blur to me. I strongly recommend "The Ultimate Gilbert and Sullivan" instead.

    Album Description

For eight years now, Bobby Wratten of Trembling Blue Stars has been composing startlingly intimate, deeply emotional love songs that deal with infatuation and obsession, longing and lust, rapture and regret. In spirit, his work recalls the youthful candor of seventies singer-songwriters like Jackson Browne and Joni Mitchell as well as the melancholic romanticism of Nick Drake. In sound, however, his material is far more up to the minute, artfully incorporating elements of electronic dance music and computer-generated ambient touches.

TBS songs are often heartbreakingly specific. A girl stands poised before a jukebox, intently contemplating the ten plays she'll get for a dollar. A man at an airport terminal window turns his back on a departing plane, unable to watch his lover leave and, perhaps, a relationship end. A couple takes a respite from their troubles and the din of the city by dozing off side by side in the pastoral oasis of London's Kensington Gardens. While there is a brooding tone to the album, the overall mood is brighter and more hopeful than on prior discs - -a hint of the dawn that all the late-night darkness had promised at its end. The arrangements are simple but almost cinematically stirring, with bedroom instrumentation yielding big-screen effects.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars some outstanding songs.......2006-09-22

I don't like all the songs on this CD, some are just too slow, BUT, the ones I like made the album precious to me.
It's the case of all the TBS albums I know; about half is great, half I could live without(usually not bad, just kinda plain).
Great voice, nice arrangments, incredible guitars, beautiful melodies make this band a favorite of mine. Robert Wratten is somewhat of a genius.
On this CD I love Helen Reddy(rocks), beginning of a kind, moonlight on snow, Kensington garden and last port of call, all four have melodies and arrangments I find beautiful.
I also like a lot open skies(despite the simple drum machine beat and casio sound) and hurry home through the crowd.
I'd give 5 stars if the songs I find weak weren't there.
Personally, I'm glad the bonus songs are there, some of which I praised above.
Not everyone's cup of tea, but if you like TBS don't miss this CD.
If you like this type of music, check Mojave3, starting with out of tune, their second and(to me) most accomplished album. Neil Halstead's also a melody genius with a golden voice. Worth knowing...I got a lot of listening pleasure from most of their songs(though I don't care for puzzles like you, their new CD at this time, I find it commercial, "bubble gum").

3 out of 5 stars Trembling? Not so much........2005-02-27

    Rating: 6.1

Bobby Wratten got the name for his London-based band, Trembling Blue Stars, from a line in "The Story of O", librarian Pauline Reage's classic novel of S&M erotica. The similarities end there. "The Seven Autumn Flowers" is about as dangerously erotic as a handshake with your grandmother. Most of the songs on the album are the kind of melancholic romantic thing you hear in the last couple minutes of a teen television drama. You know, the slow, steady strum of an acoustic guitar, the soft, sensitive male vocals, and all the characters feeling bad, hugging, taking walks by the water, etc. Just imagine Matt Pond PA's "New Hampshire" being played on "The OC" (which actually happened recently).

Don't take this the wrong way; "Autumn Flowers" is a pretty good listen. There are some real gems to discover on this heartbreaking album. "The Rhythm Of Your Breathing" features a nice click-clack rhythm and a lovely chord progression that will keep you listening. The beautiful "One Prayer Answered" is simple and sweet, featuring a very romantic violin filling in the background in places. Backup vocalist Beth Arzy adds her brilliance to "Helen Reddy" and "Further to Fall." On the pensive, paralyzed "All I'm Doing Is Losing," Wratten sings, "I waited at the airport gate/ until your plane started to move." It's an effective, emotional song with a story, like so many songs on this album.

"Kensington Gardens," is a wonderful closer. Unfortunately, the American release of "Autumn Flowers" features four bonus tracks that actually detract from the overall product. However, the extra tracks aren't a complete loss, with "Hurry Home Through the Crowds" perhaps the best song on the whole album.

Running at sixteen songs and seventy-five minutes, "Autumn Flowers" can get a little old. You pretty much have to be in the same sorrowful mood as the lead singer to really enjoy it.
