Former Dire Straits leader Mark Knopfler's second proper solo album (he's remained preoccupied with soundtrack work through the years) is a stirring and considered set of transatlantic blues. The collection is bolstered by contributions from Van Morrison ("The Last Laugh") and James Taylor (the title track), while Knopfler's guitar playing remains fresh and alive as he merges country and folk picking with electric blues. But it's as a writer that he really impresses: "Baloney Again" is a sensitive portrayal of a black gospel outfit in Jim Crow America; the title track is an intriguing distillation of Thomas Pynchon's doorstopper novel, Mason & Dixon; and "Silvertown Blues" is a stirring appreciation of blue-collar endeavor. A lovingly and honestly crafted collection, Sailing to Philadelphia shows Knopfler's talent and commitment remain as strong as ever. --Gavin MartinAlbum Description

MK is a renaissance man -- a wonderful storyteller, quitarist (south paw gone right with no pick? talking about left/right hemisphere of the brain looming out incredible tapesteries)vocalists and then some. I don't have a problem with his voice, it just another factor that equals the sum of a song. I'm sure he fixes small kitchen appliances on the weekends. He's a wonder.
If you don't like the cd, STUDY it, LISTEN to it, READ the friggin' lyrics. Check your DS baggage at the door and accept MK as a big boy now; an accomplished artist with more work ahead of him.
Odd thing about this cd is that there were a few cuts that were pulled and set aside for his Road Running with Emmylou Harris cd. That one took, I think I read, 7 years to piece together. I have to admit first listening, I wasn't impressed; but then I didn't study it, I didn't read the lyrics, I didn't do my homework. It's an incredible joint effort they should be proud of.
I was fortunate enough to hear him do Speedway at Nazareth live, and though it was a totally new song to me -- I was petrified end of the song.
My favorites are still Notting and Ragpickers but I am learning this one and loving it -- and I definitely am looking forward to whatever he has in the future.

Opening with the creaky sounds of a ship at sea, Sailing charts the funk-punk waters the San Francisco Bay area band returns to again and again. It's all here: the acerbic humor, Les Claypool's gurgling fretless bass lines, Larry LaLonde's seasick metal guitar, and Tim Alexander's Bill Bruford-inspired syncopation. The narrator of "Sgt. Baker" aims to "rape your personality," while the reapers of the "American Life" live out their dreams "residing in a cardboard box." Tom Waits makes a cameo on the funky back-alley tale "Tommy the Cat," and the protagonist of "Jerry Was a Race Car Driver" has "too many cold beers one night" and "wraps himself around a telephone pole." Primus concert fave "Those Damned Blue Collar Tweakers" helps round out this bizarre prog-punk masterpiece. --James RotondiCustomer Reviews:
Not as good as pepperjack.......2007-07-25
Probally one of the most talented rock trios ever.......2007-07-23
A perfect balance is what makes Primus listenable, something the red hot chili peppers never could do during their early years. They are able to blend perfectly and never out play each other or drown another out.
This is Primus's most accessible and a blast to listen to, some Primus's aren't so easy to listen to. Jerry Was A Race Car Driver was a hit, you've probally heard this one more of a chance of hearing the other songs. American Life has some of the best guitar playing, and Tommy The Cat is another highlight, with Tom Waits singing (Waits is easily the most unique singers you'll ever hear), each song has a great bassline, and you have to listen to Larry's numerous solos in Tommy The Cat. Sgt. Baker, Those Damned Blue Collared Tweekers, Is It Luck, about every song on here is a keeper, even though Fish on is a little bit weak compared to other Fisherman Chronicles songs.
A couple of filler songs (the B@$t@rd songs) abound, but even those songs aren't too bad. Three interludes (one's a song, but nothing else), make the music stand out as well. Les Claypool's voice also is something you can't judge on first stance either, it's pretty _________ high pitched. Despite the _____, Primus is a cool band, and this is one of their bests.
9.5/10
YOU PEOPLE CAN'T RECOGNIZE GENIUS!!!!.......2006-10-03
Yeah, yeah, they're talented. We all know that........2006-09-20
People tend to view Primus as a talented comedy band, which is fine, but there's more to them than that. Primus gets beneath the skin of the average American redneck, and exploits them (like I feel they should be). Many people tend to ignore the political messages of the songs.
Then again, there are some songs that are clearly jokes (Tommy the Cat), and some songs that are clearly serious (Eleven). The variety of the lyrics are very refreshing.
Now, the music is just amazing. I love bands who experiment, and although Les Cleypool is clearly an amazing bass player, what makes Primus really click for me is Larry LaLonde's guitar playing. He can produce great ambient sounds. Not everyone will notice it, but if it was taken away from the music, Primus wouldn't be nearly the same.
Basically, if you want something refreshing, buy this album.

Spiritual History of Celtic Ireland.......2007-06-24
The 1st song "The Song of Amergin" is about Amergin, a Celtic leader who according to legend is the 1st to set foot on Ireland to battle the "god's" for possession of the land.
The 2nd song "Maranatha" (Come Lord) maybe about Saint Patrick bringing Christianity to the Ireland or maybe the cry of the land to free itself from the ancient pagan gods.
The 3rd song "Amergin's Invocation" makes the final cleansing of the land which the 4th song "Elegy" mourns the death of the pagan gods.
The 5th song "Sailing to Byzantium" is the 1st form of Christianity to come to the Celtics. Historically the Celtic Christian church was semi-independent from Rome & took on a more Eastern Byzantine to almost Coptic Christian Mysticism that expressed the love of God & nature.
The 6th song is the most interesting on the CD; "Abwoon" is Aramaic for "Our Father" that Lisa Gerrard sings with a deep alto using the Aramaic language that Jesus used for his "How to Pray" prayer when he was on the Earth.
The 7th song "Immortal Memory" maybe about the universality of ancient Christianity or how God remembers all things? Or maybe this being the theme song is an overview of the rest of the songs?
The 8th song "Paradise Lost" maybe about the overtaking of the Celtic Church to conform to Roman Catholic doctrine & practice by Bishop Augustine 600 A.D. (not Saint Augustine of Hippo 400 A.D.) or about how modern Ireland has forgotten its true spiritual roots.
The 9th song "I Asked For Love" is plainly about getting the opposite from prayer until one just asks for God where he or she may receive freely.
The 10th song "Psallit In Aure Dei" is Patrick Cassidy main score from the words of Thomas of Celano, who was a disciple of & wrote a biography about Saint Francis of Assisi.
Try to come up with your own interpretation of this intriguing CD.
Well produced to bring out Lisa Gerrard's most unique singing style, but not as original as her 2 solo CD's "The Mirror Pool" & "Duality". Reading a few reviews below I agree that at times the music from this CD sounds like "Gorecki's 3rd Symphony" or something like Arvo Part to John Travener but it is done in good taste. Therefore a "4" is given for lack of originality.

So why 4 stars as opposed to 5? It is almost too mellow. I really prefer the greater diversity of sounds on her previous solo efforts. This album is great in certain scenarios and a wonderful album to relax too, but somehow it leaves me wanting just a little more. All in all, though it really is lovely and the perfect way to wind down and relax in swirls of beauty in today's crazy fast-paced world.

Album Description
Critically acclaimed Sailing to Philadelphia marked the singer-songwriter-guitarist's long-awaited return to the signature sound that made Dire Straits one of rock's most acclaimed and popular groups. On the heels of the release of Knopfler's latest album, 2004's Shangri-La, Sailing to Philadelphia-which is near gold in the U.S. and has sold more than 2.5 million copies worldwide-is presented in a special CD-DVDA package.Customer Reviews:
Sailing to Philadelphia.......2007-03-16
Sheer beauty........2006-10-07
"Sailing to Philadelphia" is a wonderful piece of storytelling, not only in Mark Knopfler's lyrics and vocals but, even more so, in the album's amazingly beautiful instrumentation. This is no record for those who are only into fast, harsh tunes; although in songs like "Baloney Again," "Junkie Doll," and "Silvertown Blues" Knopfler does take issue with modern society and its problems. More than anything, however, this album is a voyage -- through time and space, from ancient Scottish citadels to 19th and 20th century America, and through musical styles ranging from blues to rock to folk to country; shining in its understated style as only Mark Knopfler's music can.
While "What It Is," the first track on the CD, is obviously reminiscent of the early Dire Straits, Knopfler said during his 2001 tour in support of the album that the song's intro and theme were actually (at least partly subconsciously) inspired by one of the Scottish folk songs he used to hear as a little boy in Glasgow. And indeed, it is hard not to picture Blue Bonnets (Over the Border) when you hear him sing about that Scottish piper standing alone high up on the parapet and the highland drums that are beginning to roll, all the while the garrison sleeps in the citadel "and something from the past just comes and stares into my soul."
From the cold tollgates of Caledonia, Mark Knopfler takes us to Durham and Northumberland and the coaly Tyne (where his own family moved from Glasgow, too, when he was still very young), and introduces us to Pynchon's heroes, the "Geordie boy" Dixon and Mason, the "baker's boy from the west country." While in many respects the guitar play in this song is vintage Knopfler, you can almost hear the waves of the Delaware River flowing out of the instrument. James Taylor's vocals, of course, are an ideal embodiment of Mason's character, and they perfectly compliment Knopfler's own voice which, it almost seems, has never been better than now.
"Prairie Wedding," the only love song of the album, carries on the theme of "A Night In Summer Long Ago" from 1996's "Golden Heart" -- the poor medieval Scottish knight has become a 19th century farmer somewhere out on the American prairies, but he still takes his queen from the train station in the small town where she has arrived up the home trail, stunned by her beauty, embarrassed by the simplicity of his own circumstances and wondering, "Do you think that you could love me Mary? You think we got a chance of a life?" (Compare the last verse of " Night In Summer Long Ago:" "Then I did lead you from the hall and we did ride upon the hill, away beyond the city wall, and sure you are my lady still. A night in summer long ago the stars were falling from the sky and still, my heart, I have to know, why do you love me, Lady, why?")
In modern-day America, Knopfler takes up the themes of black migrant workers in "Baloney Again," of a race car driver's tour from Indie track to Indie track and from accident to accident ("but at the Speedway At Nazareth I made no mistake"), and of the "tables haunted by the ghosts of Las Vegas" and the "Sands of Nevada [which] go drifting away." And as always, the song's instrumentation and Knopfler's dark and coarse rendition of the lyrics are a masterful portrayal of the desolation of a Nevada ghost town and a gambler who has met his fate there ("in a wasteland of cut glass my dreams have all crumbled, and I've paid with whatever I had left for a soul.")
The album was released in three different versions, with only the British version containing all fourteen songs Knopfler intended to include on it. ("One More Matinee" was considered inappropriate for the American market, "Do America" omitted on the version published in continental Europe.) Thus true fans are well-advised to make a point of obtaining the album's British edition. Yet, regardless which version you buy: This is Mark Knopfler at his best, featuring guest appearances not only by James Taylor but also by Van Morrison (in "The Last Laugh"), Gillian Welch (in "Prairie Wedding" and "Speedway At Nazareth") and many other artists; including, of course, "honorary 96er" Paul Franklin.
Since the release of "Sailing to Philadelphia," Mark Knopfler has geared down again and changed pace for his more recent solo albums, "Ragpicker's Dream" and "Shangri-La," both diamonds in the rough in their own right; thus proving yet again his versatility and his aversion to being type-cast. But regardless which aspect of Knopfler's amazing musical talent you appreciate most: This album will doubtlessly continue to shine as one of the brightest stars in the firmament of his creativity.
great music sounds even greater..........2006-07-22
Audio-wise, the "Sailing to Philedelphia" 5.1 DVD gave me the same revelation that I got from the "B.I.A." disc. You just hear so much more when it is not all compressed into two speakers. Knopfler's vocals really sound a lot better when they come out of their own speaker, and those little fills he does just hit you at various angles, making the music fresh. These DVDs will make you know that you were justified in upgrading to a digital sound system with speakers all over the room.
This Knopfler album has been improved over the "Brothers In Arms" release in a couple of ways. First, the B.I.A. album came as a single disc with both the stereo CD and the 5.1 DVD on opposite sides of that disc. This makes the disc vulnerable if you are inclined to lay it down since there is no "safe" painted side. The marking on those discs are very small, right along the hole, making me grab my reading glasses just to load the right side. The "Sailing to Philadelphia" set has corrected this flaw by issuing two discs, the standard stereo CD and a completely separate DVD, both with painted non-playing sides. So now you have a disc for your CD players, such as in the car and the DVD for your 5.1 surround sound system, which makes this a better deal over the previous set. Additionally, there is more on the DVD than just the audio tracks. There is a Knopfler semi-bio where he talks about his beginnings in Scotland and his evolution through his musical roots, including some guitar talk. While not really a performance type of presentation, he does do some noodling on a guitar to make points about some of the music.
The bottom line for me is that even though I have had the original CD from the day it came out, I bought this new version and not only feel it was worth it, but hope that Knopfler has plans to process all of his work into these 5.1 DVDs. I will gladly pay to replicate every one of my Dire Straits / Knopfler CDs if he does.

A Great Talent On The Rise.......2006-06-19
Sultry, smoky r & b/soul over smooth jazz grooves and feel good lyrics.......2006-04-16
10 (All day Long and One More Chance)not only in the instrumental track but in Maysa's vocal phrasing. The latter half of the album swings very much toward contemporary r & b and many of the background tracks sound like samples and loops you may have heard from some other artist on some other album. Overall many of the songs sound similar in arrangement and theme, but Maysa fans, don't be furious, if it wasn't for her gloriously rich vocals, I would not have listened so many times to rate this album one star below the highest rating. Regardless, you will find this a good album and love many of the songs, without a doubt!
(3.5 stars) Maysa Sails On With Latest Release!.......2005-09-07
The first single from the album is the title track "Smooth Sailing," a good representation of what the rest of the album sounds like. "Scat World" features her alongside another relatively unknown songstress named Ledisi. The best song on the disc hands down is "All Day Long" with solid background singers and top notch production that few others are able to manage to get for their own songs. This same style is continued on the song "Where Have You Been" and "One More Chance." But there is some fun elements as well on songs like "So Very Hot" and "Hypnotic."
Although not her best work, Maysa still proves that she is the best at what she does. But even though her songs sound overtly R&B, she is usually placed in the genre that most appreciates her....Smooth Jazz. Despite the flip-flopping of categories, Maysa is hands down a wonderful vocalist and Smooth Sailing is a voyage that you can still enjoy without getting seasick.
Can't get any better than this. CAUTION: Ear orgasm involved........2005-08-30
Ever since Maysa has launched her solo career, I've been watching it like a hawk because her voice and the music production on her albums have been nothing short of perfection. This album is by no means any different. In fact, I believe its her tightest album to date. I didnt think that was possible after hearing songs like "Out of the blue", "Head to the sky" and one of my personal favorites "Everything", on her last album. However there is something that is so mature and mysterious about this album. She is constantly redefining herself while staying true to her unique style of music. She walks the fine line of r&b and jazz to perfection. Although every song on this album is good, Standouts include "Smooth sailing", "Soul Child", The ear orgasmic "Where do you go?", The window down, sunroof open, driving down the interstate jam "So very hot", and the r&b crossover "Where have you been?"
As long as Maysa makes music, I will be buying it. I hope that this isnt her last project. Also, for all you Maysa fans who like good music [...] The album is called "Seasons of life".

Shanties performed as folk songs.......2005-01-28
Shanty lovers are likely to find this CD unusual in that the presentation of nearly every song is more of a folk-tune style than true shanty. As such, you really can't consider any of the offerings rousing by any stretch but some might find this a refreshing change and even quite enjoyable since Clayton's voice is both clear and pleasing throughout.
So, my advice is to look elsewhere for rousing shanties but you may want consider this CD if you enjoy folk music with a maritime flavor.
A Matter of Preference.......2004-03-12
Paul Clayton sings solo and has brought in an acoustic guitar for backup. In my opinion, this just detracts from the authentic flavor of the pieces. Where Collins' CD puts you on a ship, Clayton's CD puts you in a recording studio.

I've heard numerous other tracks from this cd at the rink including the "New Hampshire Hornpipe", "Ebb Tide", "Dear Father" and "Under the Sea." It seems to be popular!
