How you view this niche product from pianist John Tesh (an assortment of pop songs from date movies that Tesh has reworked as piano-based instrumentals) depends largely on how you regard the material he has selected. Pure Movies 2 leans heavily on mass-audience two-hankie favorites: Lionel Richie's "Endless Love," Phil Collins's "Against All Odds," Michel Legrand's "Brian's Song" and "Summer of '42," and so on. The overall mood is soft and sentimental, and Tesh's playing and arranging regularly succeed at triggering the swift, surface-level emotional responses inherent in fast-acting movie music. Tesh works in both a solo mode and an ensemble setting, only occasionally goosing his pieces with swelling, emote-with-me strings ("Brian's Song," "Somewhere in Time"). Happily, his approach is generally low-key on most tracks, and he shines on pop-ensemble pieces such as "She's Like the Wind" (from Dirty Dancing) and "The Crying Game." The disc's best moment? The first track, "You'll Be in My Heart," where Tesh takes Collins's theme-setter from the animated Tarzan and retools it into a heart-racing, reach-for-the-stars gem. Two ballad-like vocal tracks are included: "When She Loved Me" (from Toy Story 2, sung by Richard Page), and the disc's lone Tesh original, "Heart of the Sunrise," featuring Christian vocalist Cindy Morgan. --Terry Wood

I like almost all of the John Tesh orchestrations. His compositions are so delightful to listen to and very easy to enjoy as either background music or thoughtful listening.

This CD contains a nice selection of music suitable for piano and orchestration - a pair from Phill Collins (You'll be in my heart and Against all odds) and Michael Legrand (Summer of 42 and Brian's Song)and a few "standards" - What a Wonderful World, Evergreen and the more recent Take My Breath Away.
I would have rated it higher, but for the stilted piano playing and unimaginative orchestration especially on - What A Wonderful World, The Crying Game and She's Like the Wind (not a great tune anyways!)
This CD has a real lack of feeling; its almost seems as if all the players are just going through the motions. Come on John - try adding some finesse or a few chords...something!!
This was a real disappointment for me - and I do own and enjoy a number of his other collections.
I would save your money and try some Richard Clayderman.

As with Pure Movies, John Tesh has put together a terrific CD. I'm not as thrilled with the two vocals, but overall, it is very well done and well worth the purchase.

If you liked the first Pure Movies CD you will LOVE this one. John has captures each song wonderfully. "You'll Be In My Heart" is a masterpiece. A must have for any Tesh fan (and for those who aren't for that matter). It's that good.

This is one of the best CDs that John Tesh has done and it sets the mood for so much more to come for that special evening

Insomnia??? This should cure it........2003-03-10

This is one of the most uninspired albums I've ever heard. Maybe most of this material has been overexposed but John Tesh sounds like someone had to wake him up to finish most of these tunes. From the sickly sweet 'My Heart Will Go On' to 'Everything I Do I Do It For You', most go from track to track and sound like one big selection. The only bright spot is the organ track on 'Tears In Heaven'. John stick to albums like 'Sax By The Fire'.

This cd is not one I have been able to get excited over.......2000-08-20

This is the first John Tesh cd for me to buy and it will probably be the last, stay tuned. On this cd John doesn't place himself in a position to really shine as a soloist. He uses guitar and some other electroinic sounds which keep his performanace at bay. I have grown accustomed to listing to soloist that can give command performances. This performance of Johns' is a bit shy of what I would call a command performance.

My advise to John would be to cultivate his performing skills more to where he could possibly become a great soloist. I know it is a lot harder to performn as a soloist, but these performance are more than worth all that hard work.

I Can Not Recommend This Cd

A Permanent Fixture.......2000-06-26

This CD is has a permanent place on the CD player in our home. I bought it for my wife and we have been listening to it together ever since. A true masterpiece and another John Tesh triumph. I suggest the Pure Movies II.

Romance at its finest!.......2000-03-30

Great songs that bring to mind great moments of romance. My wife loves it...causing me to love it too. One of our favorites for quiet times together.
