If you like Wim Mertens' ensemble work, you will LOVE this 3-CD set... it's simply the best work he has ever done. While the single disk "Integer Valor" is really a "highlights" album, the "Integrale" set is the complete thing. Complex, melodic, always interesting. Outstanding.

Integer Valor Integrale is three hours of some of the most astonishing music you are likely to hear. Wim Mertens is niether "new age" nor "minimalist" but a contempory composer like no other. This album is written for an ensemble containing horns, tuba,strings,harp, guitar,keyboard.Wim Mertens consistently compresses beauty into compositions that are uniquely his own. He is not well known despite nearly twenty years of composing prolificly,because he records for an obscure independent lable in Belgium which has been poorly distributed and promoted.That should change soon.Thank-you AMAZON for making this music available. I think he will be recognized as one of the greatest composers of this century.INTEGER VALOR INTEGRALE is a good place to start experiencing his genius because it is immense in depth and breadth. One of his best.......2007-02-24

Mertens is Belgium's answer to Philip Glass & Terry Riley. He would be considered a "Minimalist" but his his music seems richer than most, more like Chamber music. This is not a bad thing! His piano is more interesting than most of Glass' & he uses a wider range of strings, brass & reeds more ala Michael Nyman. I have most his works & this one is in the top 3.

Why is not this record one of the best by Mertens? Certainly it is! This record has a touching beauty: tracks like "Comme en dormant" or "Yes I never did" can move you to tears with their delicacy and passion and tracks like "La fin de la visite" or "In 3 or 4 days" envelop the listeners in their crystalline spyrals. There is no traces of the boring new-age music but on the contrary every song is exciting and opens to your ears new scenary. Mertens uses minimalism to create a dynamic building of sounds to fascinate you and give youself up into the music, going over minimalism in itself. Listen to this record: it's a great experience

Pay attention to what the music fan above has said, for it is absolutely true. This cd sounds too much like that annoying new age music that mentally-ill yoga lovers use to listen. Want to hear Mertens at his best? I suggest try with Maximizing the audience. It may be a hard work, for it is a minimalistic-in-extreme cd, but... is worthwhile, or perhaps Jardin Clos. That is my recommendation.

Not Wim's best.......1999-12-17

This may be Mertens' worst record. It's unfortunate that he has moved in this direction. The ensemble pieces sound too often like "adult contemporary instrumental" or "New Age" and that is embarrasing for Wim. For those who have heard Mertens' earlier records and liked them, beware!

Mertens at his best!.......1999-01-04

Anyone who likes contemporary minimal music (like P. Glass, M. Nyman, etc.) should love Wim Mertens. I find his music more dynamic and more emotional. "Integer Valor" is one of the best of his ensemble works-- very accessible and listenable. Try it!
