2 out of 5 stars One Half of Music For Palaces.......2007-05-23

These six tracks have been bootlegged many times, as "Dali's Car," "Music for Palaces" (disc 1), "Music for Fans Vol.1" and other names. Tracks 1, 2, 5 & 6 were recorded 19 February & 26 February 1974 in BBC studio Four. Tracks 3 & 4 were recorded live at the Reading Festival (with the Winkies), 26 August 1974.

The other disc of Music for Palaces (Music For Fans Vol.2) includes Seven Deadly Finns, Later On, R.A.F. and The Lion Sleeps Tonight.

The tracks are all interesting from a historical perspective, but not great fidelity. Don't pay a lot of money for them -- you can always download them for free with a little work -- and that doesn't reward bootleggers.

2 out of 5 stars Definitely a boot leg.......2006-06-09

The sound quality is not good in alot of spots. Definitely not worth $58.99?? I got a copy at a record show for a fraction of that. Only good for the pictures on the cover of early Eno. Also, an odd quote printed on back of Captain Beefheart, why??

4 out of 5 stars Excellent collection of rarities.......2003-08-25

This is essentially a bootleg of BBC shows. Eno made some live appearances with a band called The Winkies in his post-Roxy Music career, before a collapsed lung cut his early live career short.

The songs here are mostly from "Taking Tiger Mountain" and "Here Come the Warm Jets." In a live setting they lose a little of the atmospheric and eerie qualities they have on those two albums, but they gain a sense of sheer fun and eccentricity that makes up for the loss. Brian Eno rocks? You betcha.

The CD is short, and the sound quality is rough in spots. It would be nice to have a "legitimate" version of these shows, but so far it hasn't come to pass. The energy and sheer craziness makes up for the rough sound quality. Overall this is essential for the Eno fan, and a lot of fun for anybody into interesting rock music. The CD is currently listed as "out of print," but like many of these semi-legitimate releases, it'll probably pop up again. Get it when you have the opportunity.

    Product Description

The listener is grabbed by the opening song "Never Changes" and is beckoned along on a journey that is as varied, scenic and aural as the American highway. By the end of the final song "Songwriter" the listener has been transported and returned by the endless silver thread. These thought provoking "story songs" are conjured by the woven piano rhythms and crystal like piano melodies of ST Harris, overlaid with her forceful yet expressive alto singing voice. Her unique piano style lays the groundwork for the compelling and maverick drumming of Bobby Harris, who brings the songs messages home to your heart with his bassy emotive vocals. Native American songs that are strong and telling, side by side with car songs that include the dynamic roars and sounds of the different engines, wrapped around life songs that provoke and carry you along in your own private movie. A combination of earth wisdom and the modern mechanical world, with the power of Native American, Celtic and Blues, provides a backdrop for the meaningful lyrics, woven piano rhythms and improvisational drumming techniques. Charisma and individuality at play take you on a journey through a variety of styles and images. The result is an album that never gets boring or predictable. Turn off the lights, raise the volume and be transported away.

    4 out of 5 stars Live Eno.......2000-07-17

This live album was recorded while Eno was still playing his eccentric brand of progressive rock music. The muscular backup band he formed, Maxwell's Demon, keeps things moving with a lot of force. The sound quality is generally good, except on "Fat Lady of Limbourg" and "Third Uncle," which were obviously taped by someone sitting in the audience at the show (although even these tracks are quite listenable). Hearing Eno singing the classic "Fever" is easily worth the price of the CD. Overall, however, the high price of this import means that it is not a great introduction to Eno, if you haven't heard him before.
