It may surprise you to learn that, despite his untouchable reputation with the public, Vladimir Horowitz enjoyed a certain dubious reputation with the critics. For many, he was the epitome of the witless virtuoso, all technique and vulgar display, and no brains. There was some truth in this to the extent that he really could be variable on record, but by general consensus his Masterworks recordings show him at his absolute best. Aside from his famous Carnegie Hall concerts from 1965, you get stunning performances of music by Schumann, Haydn, Beethoven, Chopin, Scriabin, and above all, Scarlatti--the composer that Horowitz, more than anyone, put back on the map for pianists the world over. A great set. --David Hurwitz
Customer Reviews:
Horowitz: good. Amazon: good. Sony Classical: BAD........2004-05-24
I bought this set in December, and because I have so many classical CD's (more than 300), it took me 5 months to realize that the set contained TWO volume 8's and NO volume 9's. Worried that it might be too late, I e-mailed Amazon. Their first reply was that the replacement was already on its way (with return shipping paid for as well). Wow, that was a relief!
When I got the new set, I decided to study it closely and make sure that everything was good. It turns out that several of the discs (in both sets) had holes through the aluminum reflective layer -- which seemed to be because it was too thin to begin with. One disc was cracked, and another looked like the aluminum was "rotting out" on the edge. You would think that for $230, Sony Classical would put more quality into their discs. So what good is "Super Bit Mapping" and "High Definition Remastering" if the discs are so cheap that the player will misread the data? And I don't have much confidence that the discs will last many years, either.
Fortunately I got to pick the best discs from the 2 sets, so I won't need to replace this one for another. But I certainly lost respect for Sony Classical.
And kudos to you Amazon; you're really looking out for your customers!
ARE YOU CRAZY RICH OR CRAZY STUPID?.......2002-08-25
Why would any one in the right mind plunk down [money] for 13 CDS by the same pianist? Is it so you can brag about owning 11 years' worth of the same old thing? Or did you get it as a gift designed to impress but not really to listened to? Now you could probably get [money] for it whether you used it or not. Columbia Masterworks should have brought along new and younger talent. For my bet I can't think of many American pianists who are currently recording. Do we have to recycle Schumann, Rachmaninoff, Schubert, Beethoven, Liszt, Chopin, Scriabin, and others over and over? This is the Twenty-first Century. We should at least be thinking of Twentieth Century piano works. I can get 10 CDs by 10 pianists currently recording if I look to Europe.
merely spectacular!.......2001-03-10
I've only had this set about a week and have already indulged three complete listenings; it's a gold mine! - the power of preaching is persuasive in the Temple of Horowitz! I'm taken aback by the unity and continuity of sonics, an excellent and remarkable display of high engineering art. Everything important is here (almost! I wish some of the Scriabin Preludes had been included). There are sketches of incomparable pianism and supreme intelligence in these discs: Liszt's 'Vallee d'Obermann', and the Consolations; Debussy's 'L'isle joyeux' - so 'russian playing french'! - Scriabin's 'Vers le flamme' and the Black Mass sonata - one simply can't climb out of the volcano, it's terrifying and beautiful! - and the Scarlatti and Chopin. Only Gilels approaches Horowitz's indigenous understanding of Chopin. In the course of thirteen discs the glory can start to crash in around you, but at the last moment of endurance along comes 'Serenade of the Doll', or one of the Consolations. The Bach-Busoni is cerebral and fine. Horowitz gets rapped for the wrong romanticism - it's the romanticism of artistic intelligence that his art claims! I love that famous C clunker at the beginning of the Bach-Busoni in the Return to Carnegie Hall recital; more than that, I appreciate how Horowitz played his public pride in it, no retouches, etc. Shrewd, and very real, I think. He was a pianist of enormous humility on the inside, so completely knowing of his gifts - one of the reason his playing was something special. He possessed the often disregarded ability to stand completely outside his playing and admire it as one might a beautiful woman, with complete humility. It affords us the privilege of reaping joy after joy of a remarkable art the likes of which will surely stand true for a long time. 200 bucks is a lot of money, I probably would have thought it too much for the convenience of a collection; I'm glad someone else didn't feel that way, and gave me the set! - now I find it curiously too clever a package to be considered merely a consolidation of recordings into a 'set' - there is something indefinably congruent about these recordings. They fit together with harmonious intent, and shine and shadow the land with a marvelous music. Highest recommendation without reservation.
I have never regretted buying this..........2000-08-22
Considering that this set is devoted to a single instrument played by one artist in a 12-year period, the depth is mind-blowing. If variety is the spice of life, than this set is a very warming set indeed.
For the most part, Horowitz communicates a deep respect for the specific style of each composer: his Scarlatti is done articulately and without any smear with the pedal. His Liszt is demonic. His Rachmaninov is dazzling, with all of the "superfluous" notes (!) and Russian virtuosity in tact. Horowitz's Schumann is sensitive, passionate and Romantic.
And then there are his interpretations of Chopin. To me, Vladimir Horowitz is one of Chopin's best ambassadors. In particular, I draw attention to the Polonaise-Fantaisie in Vol. 3 and the mazurkas and etudes of Vol. 7.
For a good summary of this collection, listen to Vol. 4, "The Legendary 1968 TV Concert." Applause is omitted between selections, and the repertoire is tailored to Horowitz's pianistic gifts.
The first disc of Vol. 3 (Including the Bach-Busoni Toccata and the Schumann Fantasy) is not top-notch piano-playing... It's a little sloppy and inaccurate. I'm sure there are other minor slips elsewhere in this collection, but here they are most obviously seen.
Regardless, this collection is a MUST for Horowitz fans. Save up your money little by little and go and buy it. It is truly the most rewarding purchase of classical music I have ever made.
The greatest 20th Cent. pianist at his best!.......2000-04-15
If you were to take a set of piano music from only one performer to a desert island, this would be the set. Vladimir Horowitz was a pianist of incredible, almost unique, technical prowess capable of creating wonderful piano textures and tone colorings, and possessing his own dark, distinctive sound on a wonderful Steinway he had transported to each of his concerts or studio recording sessions. Of almost limitless ability, he suffered criticism from music critics because he severely limited his performing repertoire and stayed away from the concert stage for several prolonged periods because of his terrible insecurity and stagefright. He was especially criticized in his early years for bravura performances which were brilliant, but loud and not always tasteful. He was known for giving his enthralled audiences what they wanted, but it should be remembered that he championed Scarlatti and almost single-handedly brought him back into the performing world from near-oblivion, and it was Horowitz who premiered several important works by twentieth century composers such as Barber and Khatchaturian. He kept the works of the mysterious and exotic Alexander Scriabin from disappearing from piano benches in the conservatories, and he created some of the most imaginative and thrilling encore transcriptions ever heard in the concert hall. In later years, his repertoire expanded and he played some wonderful Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven, much of which is featured in this set. The highlight of this disc collection from the early 60's through about 1973 is the historic return concert at Carnegie Hall in 1965. After a self-imposed exile from public performing for 12 years, he made this famous recital which is one of the most memorable in the history of recorded piano performance. Although he made several nerve-induced mistakes in the opening Bach piece, he settled down quickly and delivered a thrilling performance, highlighted, for me, at least, by the Chopin Ballade in G minor, which took away my breath and featured one of the most dazzling climaxes I have ever heard on a piano. His incredible performance possessed a youthful vitality which belied his 62 years. Throughout the other discs in this set one hears Horowitz at his best: still technically awesome yet more musically mature and capable of producing little miracles from pieces well-known, and less-known. No longer pandering to the expectations of the audience, he gave as his encore at the Carnegie Hall return concert, a precious, child-like Traumerei from Kinderszenen. The Schumann featured on these discs includes some of the most beautiful offerings available anywhere of this composer, including a wonderful Fantasy in C and perhaps the best performance ever on record of Kreisleriana. The Schubert impromptus are little miracles, and the Debussy that's thrown in makes us fantasize about the other French music he could have given us! His wonderful Chopin reminds us there are other views besides Rubinstein's to this most-important-of-all piano literature, and his Rachmaninoff is glorious. Performing into his eighties, he was a wonder of music and the 13 discs offered here give a personal record of a dazzling career from his very best years. It might be pointed out that several pieces are offered more than once in the set as they were recorded in several concerts and studio sessions and it is interesting to hear the differences in his performances. One might wish that his piano oeuvre had included more composers and a wider range of pieces, but this collection certainly highlights the work he was best known for, including as it does the various Chopin, Rachmaninoff, Liszt, Schumann, Scarlatti, Scriabin, Bach, Mozart, Haydn, Schubert, Clementi, and Beethoven gems he was noted for throughout his long career. Anyone loving the piano, or just beautiful music must hear these discs!

"Revealing...Enchanting..Truly Magical" --Two guitars debut!.......2000-11-17
Since I am one of the two artists who make up the Odeum Guitar Duo, I would simply like to share an excellent review by the noted music critic, William Zagorski, of their debut CD release, "Concert Hall Classics", that appears in the Nov/Dec 2000 issue of Fanfare Magazine. The CD was also chosen by Acoustic Guitar Magazine as being one of the ten best independently produced guitar CDs of 2000! The Odeum Guitar Duo is featured in the June, 2000 issue of Acoustic Guitar. Here follows the Fanfare Magazine review of "Concert Hall Classics" by the Odeum Guitar Duo:
ODEUM GUITAR DUO - CONCERT HALL CLASSICS - ROBERT WETZEL, FRED BENEDETTI (gtrs)- SBE 6198 (56:26)
TORELLI Concerto in d. BEETHOVEN Duet with 2 Eye-Glasses Obbligato, WoO 32. RIMSKY-KORSAKOV Sadko: Song of India. SCHUMANN Kinderscenen. Traumerei, Op. 15/7. CHOPIN Waltz in c#, Op.64.2. VIVALDI Concerto in E, Op.3/12, RV 265. BOCCHERINI Quintet in D,G.448: Introduction and Fandango
"The Odeum Guitar Duo's fine metrical discipline was the first of their virtues that struck me in the auditioning of this disc. Any neophyte (and less than neophyte) conductor will tell you that one of the most challenging demands of the craft is that of starting a piece at one tempo, and ending it, despite various intermittent modifications along the way, in that very same tempo. If one can do this, the music can and will unfold in a truly magical and telling way. The Odeum's revealing realization of Torelli's Concerto in D minor (insightfully arranged by Robert Wetzel, who provided all of this disc's transcriptions) once again proves to me that there is a lot more to that composer than usually comes across in so-called standard performances. Their Vivaldi Concerto in E Major, R265, is sprightly and similarly ear-opening, and their final track--Boccherini's Introduction and Fandango from his D-Major Quintet--brings the disc to a most satisfying close. I found it enchanting not merely because it realized the piece's inherent fire but also because the Odeum Guitar Duo paid enlightening heed to its underlying structure.
The intervening selections--Beethoven's Duet with Two Eye-glasses Obbligato, WoO 32, Rimsky-Korsakov's "Song of India" from his opera, Sadko, and Chopin's Waltz in C# Minor, Op.64, no. 2 (here transposed to A Minor)--show, equally, Wetzel and Benedetti's instrumental skill and Wetzel's perspicacity as a transcriber. My personal test for any transcription is that it be faithful to its model, and that it show that model in a new, and perhaps unexpected, light. These three dashes of contrasting musical color pass that test handily. The recording has been well produced. I found its upper partials (I'm speaking of sound, not teeth) as delightful as the Odeum's clean voice-leading and projection of instrumental color. I HUNGRILY AWAIT THEIR NEXT DISC."

Customer Reviews:
A Viennese good ol' boy at his respectable best.......2007-03-18
Josef Krips was one of those comfortable old slippers knocking around Vienna forever; he made dozens of records, many of them in the fifties, and although one reads critical praise for his Schubert, he never quite made the definitive recording of anything. It's indisputable that he was steeped in the echt Viennese style, and now that it has passed away, his recordings assume a secondary value aside from whether they are inspired or not.
Having let Krips slip form my mind decades ago, I welcomed a chance to revisit some of his output, most of it mono and well recorded by Decca, then a leader in the audio field.
CD 1: Although the Mozart Sym. 39 and 40 were made with the LSO, they sound viennese in their lyrical relaxation and naturalness. The first movement of the 39th will make you think Krips must be a maestro to contend with--it's absolutely wonderful, albeit old-fashioned (to me that's not a detraction). The Minuet is measured but doesn't lumber; the finale doesn't streak like lightning a la George Szell but is satisfying in its moderation. Close-up, clear mono gives way to more distant and brittle sound in the 40th, but the reading is comparable. So is the fine "Jupiter" Sym. with the Israel Phil. in serviceable stereo, but here the orchestra's lack of polish is rather telling.
CD 2: We stay with the LSO in early Fifties mono for the Brahms Fourth Symn. and the Dvorak Cello Concerto with Zara Nelsova (a great cellist also honored with her own Original Masters box set on Decca). Krips is often damned with the faiant praise of bieng "solid," and that's true of the Brahms. Everything goes well, but there's no special intensity or individuality. The telltale movement in this work is the tragic finale, and here Krips shows skill but lacks involvement. Decca's sonics are a bit buzzy in the woodwinds. The tape source for the Dvorak sounds worn to me, with crackle and hiss on the surface, although not to a damaging degree. Again Krips is solid (a bit stolid, actually), and his measured pacing seems to prevent nelsova from taking flight. Even so, her playing is a pleasure because she brings modesty and individualaity to her phrasing--there's no attempt to turn the recessive cello into a poerhouse.
CD 3: For a Viennese, Krips is spending a lot of time in London--we remain there for this whole CD, and just like almost everything else so far, the recording dates are between 1950-52. The Mozart "Paris" Sym. 31 has the identical distant sound as the Sym. 40; it's quite enjoyable in the same sensible vein as the previous Mozart readings. Don't expect the skyrocket runs in the first movement to create thrills and spills. We get another worn source for the Schubert "Unfinished" (they must have had to blow an inch of dust off them--Krips has never been reissued much). ONe can hear in this moderate but idiomatic performance why Krips' was esteemed in Schubert--he's genuinely tender and affecting here. With an easy glide we move into the Schumann Fourth, with no change in sonics and another skillful, moderate rendition. Actually, Krips adopts the same pacing as Furtwangler in his famous recording from about the same time for DG. It's fascinating to compare their styles, although Krips comes off the workman rather than the master.
CD 4: At last we arrive in Vienna and the recording dates move toward the mid-Fifties up to 1958. Soprano Inge borkh, probably the leading Straussian of her day, at least in heavier roles like Elektra and Salome, made a famous recording of the last scene from Salome on rCA with Reiner and the Chicago Sym. Here she duplicates that with the Vienna Phil., and again she's strikingly exciting. It's a shame the sosnics are mono since the orchestra is playing with exceptional vibrancy. Stereo crops up for a Tchaikovsky fifth from 1958, making it one of the latest recordings in this box set. The playing of the Vienna Phil. is cushy and plush (they accepted Krips as one of the original old boys), and the pacing is comfortable rather than dramatic. For me, however, the gorgeous playing and unusually fine sound make for one of the best things here. Just don't look for fireworks or Russian angst.
CD 5: We remain in Vienna for two Haydn symphonies in Stereo, No. 94 ("Surprise") and 99. These are genial, smiling readings on the order of Bruno Walter but without that extra snap and alertness. I like them veyr much for their charm, and Decca's sound is close up, clear, and natural. You can hear the VPO play Haydn in exactly the same way today; they keep his flame burning as no other orchestra does. Finally, back to London in 1953 for a Mendelssohn "Italian" Sym. that cana't help but be a letdown. It's strictly middle of the road without any added zest.
In all, I'd say that only the two Haydn symphonies and the Schubert "Unfinished" seemed completely first rate, but everything in the set was at least enjoyable. I was reminded that Krips was solid, as his reputation went, but that counted for more than I had remembered.
Brilliant Recordings Rescued From The Vaults.......2003-06-09
Now that Decca and Deutsche Grammophon, among others, are all part of Universal, we have seen some interesting things happen, and not all of them bad. What I'm referring to in this case is the new "Original Masters" Limited Edition Box Set series. Finally, the classical music world has taken a page out of the jazz reissue handbook -- put out a quality product featuring rare recordings but make its availability limited, and people will snatch it up. In the "Original Masters" series, first DG and now Decca have each reissued five box sets, of 4 to 7 CDs each, in distinguished, space-saving slim paper boxes, though the style of packaging is different. The DG sets feature 50s style graphics design on their covers, while the Decca ones have a distinctive rainbow/spectrum pattern on the spines and banners, and a black-and-white photo of the artist in question on the face of the box.
This particular set features the great conductor Josef Krips' Decca recordings from 1950-58. As the track information is non-existent above, I will try to be of assistance. The first disc contains Mozart's Symphonies Nos. 39 and 40 (the back of the box indicating it as Symphony No. 4 is a typo) with the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO) from 1951 and 1953 respectively, and the 41st Symphony with the Israel Philharmonic from 1957. Disc two features Brahms' Symphony No. 4 (LSO, 1950) and the Dvorak Cello Concerto with Zara Nelsova (LSO, 1951). Disc three returns to Mozart with the 31st Symphony (LSO, 1951), then winds up with the Schubert "Unfinished" (LSO, 1950) and Schumann's 4th Symphony (LSO, 1952). CD Four begins by showcasing the vocal talents of soprano Inge Borkh on Beethoven's "Ah! Perfido" and the closing scene from Strauss' Salome (both Vienna Philharmonic, 1956), then concludes with Tchaikovsky's 5th Symphony (Vienna, 1958). The final disc starts with two Haydn Symphonies -- Nos. 94 & 99 both with the Vienna Philharmonic from 1957 -- and concludes back in London with Mendelssohn's 4th Symphony (LSO, 1953). Despite the fact that the majority of these recordings are in mono (the Mozart 41st from CD 1, all of CD 4, and Haydn 94th and 99th from CD 5 are the only stereo tracks), the first rate performances more than compensate for any audio shortcomings. Well, I guess the consolidation of the music industry isn't so bad after all, as long as I can look forward to more reissues like this.

Any anthology that explores the dawn of phonograph recordings promises to be rough going: I can't discern anything meaningful from the primitive recordings by the legendary conductor Arthur Nikisch. However, everything is more clear and vivid after the implementation of the microphone in 1926, and this material occupies four of these five CDs. Still, some artists sound a bit inhibited, and it's frustrating that we're often given only one movement from concertos played by pianist Elly Ney and cellist Enrico Mainardi. However, seasoned collectors will find recordings by Victor de Sabata, Paul Van Kempen, and others that they never even knew existed, plus a great, little-known 1943 performance of Schumann's Symphonic Etudes by Geza Anda. The set is crowned by an emphatic, rugged, deeply felt complete 1941 performance of the Mozart Requiem conducted by Bruno Kittl. The clarity of the remasterings is often amazing. --David Patrick Stearns
Customer Reviews:
Sorry...I heard only fifth disc in this set........2000-12-06
I'm very sorry because I bought only fifth disc in this set. So, I don't review all of CDs. Bruno Kittel(1870-1948) was founder and conductor of his chorus-Bruno-Kittel-Chor. It was one of very highest vocal groups in German-speaking countries. They achieved many contributions. In 1928, Bruno-Kittel-Chor recorded first complete SP of Beethoven's Missa solemnis(with Lotte Leonard, Elenor Schlosshauer-Reynolds, Eugen Transky, Wilhelm Guttman and the Berliner Philharmoniker) in Deutsche Grammophon. Its SPs were imported to Japan, sold over 17000 sets. Its restored CD set were issued by Japan Polygram in 1998(I seeked this set so far but I have not this set because it was issued only Japan.). And they sung many times Beethoven's 9th Symphony with Oskar Fried(1929), Wilhelm Furtwangler(1937 and 1942) and many other conductors. In Third Reich, Kittel was premiered some of 'political' works include Christoph Muller's Deutsches Heldenrequiem-offered to Hitler-and participated concerts held by Nazi. For that reason, Kittel was buried in post-war German musical scene and chorus were disorganized. In World War II, they recorded for Deutsche Grammophon-Bach's Matthaus-Passion(1942. except 18 numbers) and Mozart's Requiem(1941)-twice. It's a last recordings they sung. In this fifth CD contains complete Requiem and final chorus in Matthaus-Passion(St.Matthew Passion). When I heard this recording first, very surprised. Part of Introitus' soprano solo part and Offertorium's last refrain, verses related 'Jewish' were erased and replaced other Latin words(Sion->coelis, Jerusalem->hic in terra, Abrahae->Domini). It's a Nazi's sensorship obviously. What a cruel purges! But they performed very humanistic-added Romantic a little-this last work by Mozart. In solo parts, soloists-Tilla Briem, Gertrud Freimuth, Walther Ludwig and Fred Drissen-sung very moved with rich German accents. And choral parts-especially Dies irae and Lacrimosa, they performed with fear and tears probably. And they sung in Kyrie and Communio's difficult fugue part very superbly. Certainly, they are very highest chorus in German. I think it's a best of pre-war and wartime Requiem recording with Bruno Walter's live recording in 1937. But, final chorus in Matthaus-Passion is 'too' romantic performance. Bach's taste disappeared 'perfectly' in this recording. For that reason, this recording is not re-issue by CD present day. And this CD contains other two small choral works sung by Thomanenchor Leipzig-Brahms' In stiller Nacht conducted by Karl Straube(1930) and Anonymous Christkindleins Wiegenlied. Restoration quality is not bad. But scratch noise remained in part(very high in Introitus' opening and some other parts). I think Deutsche Grammophon's staff were restored like a original SP added frequency.
