Trinidad steel drummer Robert Greenidge (who has worked with everyone from John Lennon to Taj Mahal) and Arkansas keyboardist Michael Utley (who's worked with everyone from Aretha Franklin to John Prine) are both members of Buffett's Coral Reefer Band, and
Club Trini is their fourth album as a duo, though their first in eight years. Joined by fellow Coral Reefers, Greenidge and Utley serves up eight breezy Caribbean instrumentals and one vocal number, "Love Is Made of This," sung by Nadirah Shakoor, formerly of Arrested Development and now with the Coral Reefer Band. All the music is bouncy, tuneful, and well played, but it's so simple and easygoing that it inevitably becomes background music rather than foreground music.

NICE.......2002-03-20
This CD is a smile waiting to happen. As soon as a I popped it in the cd player I was dancing around my apartment, shaking my hips to the caribbean beat, completely forgetting the bad mood I was in 10 minutes before. The beats and guitar work are great, Jimmy Buffett's vocals on some of the tracks are balm to the parrothead soul (esp his take on No Woman No Cry) and I have long been a huge fan of Nadirah Shakoor, since I heard her solo while Jimmy took a break at his Cincinnati concert one year. The live ambience only adds, with the energy and noise of the crowd as much a part of the listening experience as you own tropical island fantasies. Buy it for the rhythms, buy it 'cause it's Jimmy, buy it 'cause Nadirah is on it....just do yourself a favor and buy it!
Great Songs and Great Musicians.......2001-01-22
This is a wonderful album. It's great to hear these guys, normally confined to being Jimmy Buffett's backup band (aside from all their side projects), get a chance to shine together. This is a tropical album, but some of the songs are very jazzy, which is guitarist Peter Mayer's background. One of the songs (Soltar) invokes Santana, especially in Peter's tasty guitar solo and Hammond organ work of Mike Utley.
The songs range from dance in the streets party music to lazy relaxing poolside vibes for a sunny summer day. The album was recorded live at Margaritaville Cafe in New Orleans, so the crowd interaction is cool and the jams are authentic. The only thing keeping this from being 5 stars is that Jimmy Buffett pokes his head in for a few songs and just doesn't fit the vibe. His vocals detract from the great Nadira's on "Cairo" and, while "No Woman No Cry" is good, he doesn't fit there either. Sorry to you guys who liked him on this album, but he didn't belong here.
Coral Reefers at their best.......2000-12-17
If you're only into the core of the Parrothead Cannon, then this CD isn't for you. No Son of a Son or Changes here. The emphasis is on the talent and brilliance of the Coral Reefers. If you lay in bed at night thinking about going back to the island, or dream about going down to the Banana Republics and listening to the local bands, consider yourself a fit for this Album. Nadirah Shakoor fans will not be disappointed.
A must have CD for any Parrot Head.......2000-09-21
I am a 20 year Buffett fan. I've had this CD for 2 weeks and have'nt stopped listening to it for the last two weeks. Bubba's singing of "No woman, No cry" is absolutely incredible. I keep punching track 13 over and over again. His never released "Come on in" is in typical Buffett fashion, have to listen to it 10 times before you say, "Wow, he did it again." You get to hear how truly talented Robert is on the steel drums. Trini's rendition of "African Friend" is super. People talk about taking one CD with them on a deserted island, this one is it. Steel drums and Bubba, what else is there.?
Club Trini at its best!.......2000-07-10
Club Trini's best cd yet! The live recording is powerful, just like their music.

Great music.......2007-02-16
Michael & Robert hit it again. Peter Mayer's guitar & vocals complete the experience.
Like a cool tropical breeze.......2001-04-19
I came to this album as a Jimmy Buffett fan -- Club Trini is made up of current and former members of his Coral Reefer band -- and found something both similar and distinctly different than what I was expecting.
This album is almost entirely instrumental -- there are a few vocals on some of the tracks, but never enough to take the focus away from the music -- and it's a fusion of the music Buffett's fans might be familiar with, along with more "pure" Caribbean music and jazz. It's an effective blend, extremely pleasant and refreshing. I've used it as background music at parties and at work numerous times.
It's also nice to see the Club Trini guys get a chance to get the spotlight. For better or worse, at Buffett concerts, the focus is on Jimmy or the show the audience puts on.
A nice album and one that Buffett fans looking for something that's not quite as party-party-party as some of his albums are would do well to pick up.
Great recording quality.......2001-01-10
Anyone looking to for a good upbeat steel drum album will appreciate this. All instrumental except for track 3...I believe that's Nadira Shakoor on that one. Those with some investment in their audio equipment will enjoy the quality of this recording. (Hi-fi shops should use this to demo)
If you've decided that some steel drum instrumental music would make a nice addition to your music collection, you can't go wrong with this Club Trini CD.
BTW - anyone else out there have a kid who doesn't like Buffett yet? My daughter is 1-1/2, and she actually likes this CD...

It appears to be from the first Club Trini album. Also a good album, with the great "Love is Made of This", but I prefer this one because it's live.
Liked it so much -- I'm back for more........2000-06-01
Having played steel drums in college, I really enjoy listening to this CD. There's a good variety of tunes and the slower ones are beautiful. It's relaxing, yet fun. It's a good addition to a CD collection for anyone out there like me who is always searching for a new CD featuring the steel drum.
