Eric Satie has composed some of the most beautiful music in the world. One of the few musical pieces that bring out real emotion in me.

Meditative Satie.......2006-12-24
As with any composer there are many ways to competently interpret their work. If you like Satie's music played to bring out its meditative, dreamy qualities, this is the recording for you.

THREE OF THE BEST MUSICIANS ON THE PLANET........2005-11-02
HERB,WILL CALHOUN (PERCUSSION), DOUG WIMBISH (BASS, GUITAR AND EFFECTS) CREATE MAGIC TOGETHER. THIS IS A KEEPER. PLAY LOUDLY AND LISTEN INTENTLY. YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED.
Some are a bit too conventional to understand this........2003-09-17
Herb is a genius, simply just that. Extremely underrated by many. It's unfortunate that most people don't give him credit for his versatility. He plays everything from his legendary hits with that old latin brass sound, to Salsa, to this new amazing style. I'm not sure exactly how to characterize this album, but it's a sort of urban-jazz-brass fushion. Colors is so amazing not just because it's unique, but of course it sounds beautiful. Most may note that this album has a serious increase in low-level frequencies compared to most brass albums, which only makes everything sound more spectacular altogether. This "full sound" only makes his trumpet sound more expressive against the beats. When the legendary artist in brass is still here 30 years later taking this form of music to the next level, I'm extremely impressed. Don't expect conventional brass, we know Herbs done a lot of that already. This is a far more abstract and modern creation.
Colorful Tones And Rhythms Abound.......2002-11-01
Herb Alpert's music is so pleasing. The Colors CD is no exception. Definitely like the special drumming on the record. The drum effects bounce very creatively off the booming bass.
Nonetheless, Herb's use of the trumpet and flugelhorn is certainly creative and very tuneful. Fairly strong on the passionate side as well. Just listen to track #5 Think About It.
Outside of a couple of somewhat boring tracks, this release is almost as good as his Tijuana Brass days. Give it a listen.
Herb Albert plays "colors" anywhere he goes!.......2000-07-02
Going places! He should be travelling around, alone or with the Tijuana Band and have us all swoon and swing to the gorgeous music he makes with his trumpet-playing. I'll already in love with this CD because the music pieces give you already a taste of what is coming your way! Cheers! I'd love to fly with him!
An Outstanding Effort.......1999-11-22
Not having listened to Herb Alpert for years, but always a huge fan of TJB, I purchased this CD after reading a so-so review in my local newspaper. As usual the newspaper was wrong. I find this to be an incredible, modern recording. Herb's trumpet playing is incredible, the rhythms are great. It is subtle music, but highly addictive once you let go of preconcieved notions about what it should sound like. If you are open minded and like modern, progressive jazz, it is a Must Have CD.

A pleasent surprise........2007-04-27
I recently purchase this cd (Japan version) and was blown away by the strength of the second wind. With the exception of 2 tracks this album is near perfection. There is something about Herb Alpert trumpet playing that really relaxes my nerves. This album has track after track of smooth and mellow music with just a slight touch of funk....highly recommended.Japan version has a smoking remake of the " lonely bull".
Great.......2006-08-05
This is probably the best jazz album Herb Alpert recorded since Rise in 1979, possibly better. With a few exceptions--the horrible "Flirtation" (it's really that bad) and the annoying "Sneakin' In," every track is nice, and there are two or three masterpieces. There used to be some review calling Alpert's cover of "My Funny Valentine" "forgettable," but that's ridiculous--it's gorgeous, and doesn't have the song's insulting lyrics. Same verdict on "Rendezvous." Drivin' Home is probably the next best track.
The Magic Trumpet of Old shows new life.......2000-10-25
Don't let the drab CD cover fool you-- Herb Alpert's "Second Wind" is a treat for those who enjoy smooth jazz, particularly trumpet. The influence of co-writer Jeff Lorber is obvious here, as the music is very upbeat, but Jeff doesn't play the trumpet. There is still something about Alpert's trumpet tone that is unique. There is no tint. It is so smooth and rich. Listen to the track "Wherever you are," for example and ask if you have ever heard such a beautiful tone from a trumpet. Alpert's playing is great throughout the CD-- Side steppin' and Rendezvous display his fine technique and great tone, which for me more than make up for his limited high-end range. I had to listen to the CD four or five times to appreciate it. Give it a try, its great music to relax to.
Welcome Back Herb!.......1998-10-01
Herb Alpert's first release in four years - and on his new label - is a joyous one! Teaming up with keyboardist Jeff Lorber, Alpert embarks on a funk-jazz romp that showcases some of his best playing on record. He conjures up images of Miles Davis on many of the songs, yet it isn't a ripoff of Miles at all. Alpert is a smart player. He knows what he can and can't do, and stays within himself. Opening up with the aptly-titled "Second Wind" Herb and Lorber create a great groove which gives Alpert some freedom to roam around on the horn. "Driving Home" is another hot song with Herb playing some really nice jazz on. Lorber does some nice playing on "Sneakin' In" with the Hammond B3 organ, conjuring up images of Jimmy Smith. This is some of Lorber's best playing on record, too. On his own Lorber ends up playing a zillion notes per second, but under Alpert's guidance he plays only when necessary. The two combined to compose most of the songs, including the beautiful "Rendevouz", where Alpert shows his romantic side of playing. And his version of "My Funny Valentine" is also very hip. For those who haven't listened to Herb Alpert in a long time, this is a CD that will impress you.
One other note: The Japanese version of this CD contains a bonus track - a "live" version of "The Lonely Bull", which was Alpert's very first hit with the Tijuana Brass. Very funky, with great solos by Alpert and Lorber!

Customer Reviews:
One of those Collection CDs that Merits Adding to the Library!.......2006-09-24
Often pasted together excerpts on the basis of a theme or a specific artist can be annoyingly disjointed. This is an exception to that rule. While many people appreciate the majestic symphonies by Ralph Vaughn Williams, there is a larger audience waiting to be introduced to one f the masters of British melody. Here is a selection of some of the more moody but eloquent works by a great composer too often dismissed.
The CD collection of 'Soft Sounds' is divided among several groups. Works on the collection include performances from the New Queen's Hall Orchestra (Barry Wordsworth, conductor), Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields (Sir Neville Marriner, conductor), and the London Philharmonic Orchestra (Sir Adrian Boult, conducing). These fine orchestras survey 'The Lark Ascending, romance for violin & orchestra' with a sensitive Hagai Shaham as soloist, 'Fantasia on Greensleeves, for harp, flute & strings', the Oboe Concerto in A minor' with Celia Nicklin soloist, the 'Lento' from 'The London Symphony', the 'Concerto grosso for strings' (Sarabande), 'English Folk Song Suite', and the much loved 'Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis, for 2 string orchestras'.
There are no attempts to connect these works except through the concept of 'soft music' and there are individually finer performances of some on other recordings. But for a soothing, tranquil hour of gorgeous music to tame the savage world, this is one of those CDs that will serve the listener well - and hopefully increase Vaughn Williams' audience! Grady Harp, September 06
Beautiful!.......2004-02-19
"The Lark Ascending" is one of my all-time favorite pieces, and I must say that Ralph Vaughan Williams is amazing after listening to this CD. "Fantasia on Greensleeves" blew me away.
Wonderful music.

Beautiful Selections.......2002-03-22
I'm a Vaughan Williams enthusist and I find that this CD has many (not all, of course) of the soft and beautiful orchestral works of Mr. Williams. The quality is excellent. "Fant on a Theme by Thomas Tallis" is one of my favorite pieces of work by Williams, however, I didn't like Mr. Wordsworth's interpretation of this piece (in my opinion, the best interpretation is by Leonard Slatkin, which I suggest you buy). All in all, this is a very good CD and I highly recommand it.
Good if not for the oboe..........2001-03-19
This recording features wonderful renditions of many of Vaughan Williams' most heralded compositions. The Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis is one of the best I've heard, as are most of the other pieces on this CD. However, the (incomplete) Oboe Concerto is of mediocre quality. Being an oboist, I am naturally critical of oboe playing, but I must say that at times even an untrained ear can discern the utter lack of taste that went in to playing the wonderful concerto, which I much enjoy playing myself. A good CD to help people come to love Vaughan Williams, but don't buy it for the Oboe Concerto - you'll be wasting your money.
I am so glad I bought this album!.......2000-11-04
I bought this album because it had two pieces I acutally knew the names of (Lark Ascending & Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis) and adored, never thinking I would also come to love the other pieces. Well I did and now am on a search to find more good works by Vaughan Williams! This is one of my most played cds and still gives me shivers with each listen :-)

As super as VOL 1.......2007-01-19
Volume 2 is top quality instrumental work, and compares very well to one of my favorite CDs - Sounds of Wood & Steel Volume 1.
Terrific Collection of Guitar Instrumentals.......2005-09-18
This second volume of the SOUNDS OF WOOD & STEEL series is a simply wonderful album of guitar instrumentals. As with the previous volume, each song features Taylor guitars (which celebrated its 25th anniversary in 1999 when this CD was released).
There are numerous highlights, including Taylor co-founder Bob Taylor's rendition of "After the Gold Rush." [Note: Neil Young was an early proponent of the Taylor guitar.] Also, Elliot Easton's performance of "Caroline No" is amazing. Easton chose the song because of his working relationship with Brian Wilson (he has performed and recorded with Wilson) and his belief that it is the "prettiest pop ballad ever." In addition, the Hawaiian slack-key flavor of "The Island" performed by Jim Messina (with Kenny Loggins sittin' in providing wordless vocals) is a real joy.
Bottom line, there isn't a weak cut in the bunch. And don't be misled by the fact that this CD was released on the new age Windham Hill label. There's no navel-gazing guitar noodling here--just musicians sharing their love of guitars. Very satisfying. [Running Time - 47:47] HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
great stuff!.......2004-11-25
What's not to like about this compilation? I'm not at all sure why some reviewers were "disappointed" by this cd. I'm thrilled to have so many leads to all of this talent. One shouldn't expect to like every tune on a cd such as this, because there are so many different styles, but I feel that the producers did an amazing job keeping the tone very similar, so that one can enjoy this cd from beginning to end. Keep in mind, too, that this type of music is designed to be background for reading, or writing a letter, or doing a puzzle, or studying, or just relaxing. It's SUPPOSED to be unobtrusive. It's not supposed to be mindblowing or alter your consciousness. It's just supposed to set a mood and help you mellow out, and it certainly does that artfully.
Beautiful music.......2002-01-16
If you like, even just like, acoustic guitar you will like this record. The perfect record for a candlelight dinner or peaceful quite evenings. I love just about every song on this record. Lovely, intricate guitar playing.
Listening to this record on the couch, with the lights off and my eyes closed, makes me feel like I am lying by a crackling creek, in the grass, under a blue sky, temperature about 80 degrees, when I was ten years old.
Disappointing compared to the first volume.......2000-05-25
The sound quality is great and the playing is top-notch. However, only a handful of tracks here (including "Caroline, No" Elliot Easton, "Liz & Opie" Victor Wooten, "Wings of the Morning" Doyle Dykes and maybe one or two more) seem inspired. Taken on it's own terms, the collection overall sounds pleasant enough but the weaker tracks come across as being here just for the project theme- to demo the Taylor Guitar sound. If you can only get one of the two volumes, Vol. 1 is absolutely the one to go with. This one is for serious guitar enthusiasts only or music collectors/completists who want these tracks because they may not be available elsewhere.

I read the review from the music lover in Minneapolis and while I can understand his/her disappointment with this CD if you were expecting a Soca or Reggae Love Songs CD, you have to remember that Byron Lee goes way, way back and much of his music was love songs long before Soca or Reggae even made the scene. I like the soca, reggae stuff too, but the "Soft Lee" series really brings back a lot of fond memories of the Byron Lee music I remember from the 60's. I love the music on this CD.
Can you say disappointment?.......1999-05-13
I've had this CD from the moment it was released and have never listened to it again. Maybe I just didn't know what to expect, but I was disappointed that this was not a soca love song CD.
