About the Artist
Smooth, Sultry, Hypnotic…are just a few words that describe the sound of gifted saxophonist Jeff Sparks. This multi-faceted musician has been making headlines with his refreshing new style of jazz music. Sparks’ wide range of grooves appeal to all types of music listeners. Letting his heart ‘speak’ through his music, is essentially the way he accents his composition through his soprano saxophone.

Sparks’ production is a mixture of various genres that include Classical Soul to Contemporary Jazz, to Hip-Hop. As inspiration, he draws from a pool of �greats� who have come before him, giving him the versatility to create such breathtaking sounds.

Sparks’ Chicago upbringing combines beautifully with his education at Boston’s Berklee College of Music. He was born in a family that exudes a rich heritage of music. His grandfather was a noted trumpet player, his father, an accomplished organist, and his mother was a music teacher and classical vocalist. His three siblings also sing and play instruments. In his 30+ years as a saxophonist, Sparks has shared the stage with such noted artists as Dizzy Gillespie, Clark Terry, Branford Marsalis, Al B. Sure, Oleta Adams, Gerald Albright, Out of Eden, Fred Hammond, Trinity 5:7, Ben Tankard, Virtue, Greg O’Quinn, Woody Rock, Gospel Gangsters, Damita, Donnie McClurkin…and the list goes on. Sparks’ progressive musical style defies classification, allowing him to fit simultaneously in the categories of Jazz, Soul, R&B, and Hip Hop. This is a trait that absolutely separates him from his counterparts.

Masters 'Having Fun', and so will you.......2003-04-05

Excellent duo recording from pianist/singer Jay McShann and bassist Major 'Mule' Holley. The two gentlemen swing like mad on this tour de force of blues, standards and ballads. Holley's vocal improvisation along with his bass solos are stunning, and his fat, walking lines are a joy. On top of this rock solid foundation are Jay McShann's blues-drenched piano and vocals. The live setting also adds to the loose, funky mood, and it must have been a night to remember for those lucky enough to be in the audience. The rest of us will have to do with the cd, and play it as loud as we can.

Bing, Louis and others solo too much.......2001-05-07

"Havin' Fun" is a recording from a reunion of alumni from Paul Whiteman's band. There is far too much individualism on this disc as opposed to the classic artisitry of duets. Other CD's provide, much more prolifically, the duets from Bing and Louis that would be wanted by most people.

Flugelhorn/Trumpet master, composer, singer and arranger Bobby Lewis returns again with his unprecedented 5th Southport CD Release "Just Havin' Some Fun." Recently back from his first tour of India, and second tour of Poland, Mr. Lewis continues his poetic, vibrant and melodic approach to jazz and brazilian/latin music. In a world that has become so complex and serious, Bobby Lewis brings a musical smile from Chicago across the face of sound and time.

The 11 tracks on this CD follow many directions, from the stellar, swinging jaunt of the title track, "Just Havin' Some Fun", to the mystical glow of "Nalini" (both Lewis originals.) The lush sound of Bobby Lewis gently amazes.

Of special note on this release is the Southport solo debut of Chicago songstress Bonnie Herman (member of the famed vocal group, The Singers Unlimited.) Bonnie sings "Some Other Time," a Leonard Bernstein composition from the Broadway musical "On The Town." The jazz standard "Just Friends", is arranged by Dick Boyell for the quartet and five clarinets from the Chicago Symphony, as a vocal duet for Bonnie and Bobby. Ms. Herman's voice is pure romance captured in time on disc.

And so Bobby Lewis asks the musical world, "What are you doing?" We respond, "Just Havin' Some Fun!"
