A moving tribute to our need to WAKE UP and change... Whatever that needs to be changed ouside needs first to be changed from the inside...

3 out of 5 stars Not definitive: Selling Melissa short.......2007-07-08

Melissa Etheridge is, simply stated, one of the most important female artists of the last two decades. She not only made it as a woman rocking on her own terms, she also put her sexuality on the line and then made her personal battle with cancer into a public crusade. These qualities frame her as a person and are important markers of her integrity.

But more importantly, she has made some brilliant music with at least two five star albums. Both the debut and her breakthrough, "Yes I Am," are must-own records. Naturally, they are the two CD's from which the lion's share of "The Road Less Traveled" is culled; six of the 18 songs here. Add the six songs that are previously unreleased, and that leaves only six songs culled from the rest of Melissa's library.

The diference between this and the previous version is the addition of the Oscar winning "I Need To Wake Up" from "An Inconvenient Truth." The CD booklet is gone to make it more environmentaly freindly and the plactic jewel box is replaced by a recycled paper shell with foam tray. While it changes the packaging, it doesn't change the fact that there are too many ommissions here to make it listener friendly.

This presents a problem. It leaves off such terrific popular favorites and singles. "Dance Without Sleeping," "Your Little Secret," "Breathe" and the entire contents of "Skin" wind up being neglected. That is not to say that "The Road Less Traveled" is a poor collection; it's just that it is not as thorough as it could have been.

As for the new material, it's all good stuff. Melissa's covers of Tom Petty's "Refugee" and (finally!) a studio version of Janis Jopin's "Piece Of My Heart" are, alone, worth the price of the disc. Her anthems of survival "This Is Not Goodbye" and "I Run For Life" are heartfelt and solid. Too bad the collection is a little too tame and not enough crazy. I am sure the inevitable double disc collection will eventually appear, but for now, "The Road Less Traveled" is a less than perfect primer.

4 out of 5 stars 4.5 Stars... Definitive overview of Mellisa Etheridge's career.......2007-07-02

Melissa Etheridge is one of the premier female singer-songwriters from this era, and after 8 studio albums, issued from 1988 to 2004, Melissa got a very deserved "Greatest Hits" treatment in 2005. Two years later, the album is reissued to include an unexpected development.

"Greatest Hits: The Road Less Traveled" (18 tracks, 76 min.) brings a terrific overview of Melissa's career. The set starts off with a nice new cover of the Tom Petty hit "Refugee". After that the set rolls chronologically. "The Way I Do" from her debut album is very typical of the "Etheridge sound": acoustic guitar driven rock-and-roll. I perseonally love that sound. 1993's "Yes I Am" album, arguably Melissa at her commercial peak, gets 3 tracks: "I'm The Only One", the beautiful "Come To My Window" (her biggest hit ever), and "If I Wanted To". Other highlights include "I Want To Come Over" and the new cover of Janis Joplin's "Piece of My Heart".

The reissue comes with a new track, the excellent "I Need to Wake Up", which plays over the closing credits of the "Inconvenient Truth" documentary. The song went on to win the Oscar for Best Original Song in the 2007 Oscars. Overall, this makes the compilation just that much better than the original 2005 compilation. If you were on the fence about getting this, go ahead and buy this, surely the definitive Melissa Etheridge compilation.

4 out of 5 stars Coming Back To Her Window.......2007-03-17

There are very few female singers that seem to show that their words come from the heart. While more of the artists are about the outside image like Jessica Simpson, Beyonce', and Kelly Clarkson, there are much fewer singer/songwriters that still sing with feeling and compassion. Melissa Etheridge is one of those who still has the drive and has definitely shown it the past few years. She had struggled and defeated her battle with breast cancer, and reclaimed herself as a defiant, down to Earth female performer. Her hits record which was released a few years ago, showed that she was good, but it didn't completely showcase her career definitively. Now that it has been re-issued, has it gotten any better?

Melissa Etheridge's 2007 re-released Greatest Hits: The Road Less Traveled, spans her near 20 year career with 18 tracks that are bold, and defiant to her voice. The songs here have all been remastered nicely, and sound better than they were released a few years ago. Although not much has changed on this record as before. The album still includes a lot of great tracks including I Want To Come Over, Come To My Window, I Am The Only One, and Ain't It Heavy. The album also includes her adult contemporary hit I Run For Life, and a cover of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Refugee. The only new addition in this reissuing is I Need To Wake Up, her Oscar-winning song from the Al Gore documentary, An Inconvient Truth. The song is very bold and speaks a clear message to life around us, and fits nicely in the package. Nevertheless, the album still overlooks a few great tracks like it did before such as Breathe, Your Little Secret, and her soulful song I Wanna Be In Love from her
album Skin.

Still, despte the record overlooking a few songs, Melissa Etheridge's Greatest Hits: The Road Less traveled isn't a bad record worth listening too, for anybody who doesn't own a Melissa Etheridge album. It is a little better than it was before. I still love listening to her music, and I hope she comes back with a new record soon. Even with all the stuff that is going on, many of us are still coming to her window for great music.

Album Description

This collection covers Melissa Etheridge's 17-year career in 17 dynamic songs, including hits like "Come to My Window," "I Want to Come Over," and "Bring Me Some Water." It also includes four new recordings: her simmering take on Tom Petty's "Refugee"; a reprise of "Piece of My Heart," which wowed the world in her stunning Grammy Awards show performance this past February; an emotional and heartfelt original song called "This Is Not Goodbye"; and the brand-new "I Run for Life," an inspiring anthem for those who, like Etheridge, have had their lives impacted by breast cancer. Regarding its release, Etheridge says, "I always thought that a greatest hits album was something to aspire to. When you got to the point in your career where you could have one, you did something right."

Etheridge has recorded eight albums over the course of her career. She has won the Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance twice: for the song "Ain't It Heavy" in 1992, and "Come to My Window" in 1994. In 1996, she was honored with the prestigious ASCAP Songwriter of the Year award. The Kansas-born singer/songwriter has sold more than 30,000,000 records worldwide.

Fantastic CD. Melissa's voice is so incredible, the passion that she has with each track makes this a must have

4 out of 5 stars Melissa's Past Meets My Past.......2007-03-28

When I purchased this CD, I did so because Melissa sings a song very dear to my heart - I Run for Life. As an 11 year cancer survivor, I've never forgotten those with whom I shared the "dark" times with. The important thing that Melissa says and I believe is that we, as survivors, have to continue to represent those who have died, those like us who have survived and to support anyone in the future whose body is "darkened" by this disease. I'm with you Melissa... I run for life.

As I began listening to the entire CD, I heard songs from her past and some songs I had never heard before. All in all, I enjoy to this day listening to The Road Less Travelled, maybe that's because it is the road I usually take.

5 out of 5 stars Great collection and I Loved the new tunes!.......2007-03-28

There are several new songs on this album and they really do make it worth purchasing even if you own all of her other albums like I do. Sit back relax and enjoy. A wonderful collection from a fantastic artist.

5 out of 5 stars Melissa Rocks!.......2007-01-17

I am a huge fan of Melissa Etheridge. I love this cd. While none of the songs are new I feel that all of them come together to pull off a stellar Greatest Hits. Some of these songs I haven't heard before because I don't own all of Melissa's CDs yet but I will eventually. You won't be disappointed...this is a cd you can listen to over and over again and never get bored.

5 out of 5 stars Grabs you by the heart..........2007-01-14

Yes, she speaks to your heart, mind and soul. You can read between the lines, of her passionate relationships with lovers past, the hurt, the yearning, the pain of abandonment, the fire of love and jealousy. After her bout with Cancer, she wrote some very touching songs about this experience. All that she sings sounds true to the core of one's heart, it is what she means. Great rock sound, too! Go Melissa! She is the best!

The sunset motif on the cover of George Strait's 28th MCA album since 1981 hints at a more private, thoughtful ambiance. This is reflected in the title song, the introspective "The Middle of Nowhere," and the contented (if bland) domesticity of "Living and Living Well." Strait adds a smoking revival of Chip Taylor's rockabilly homage "The Real Thing," though the convivial remake of Del Reeves's 1969 honky-tonk hit "Good Time Charley's" didn't need the annoying overdubbed barroom sounds. As always, letting Strait be Strait is the key. When that doesn't happen and unsuitable material enters the mix, things quickly falter, as they do on his tepid version of Rodney Crowell's "Stars on the Water" and the formulaic "Don't Tell Me You're Not in Love." On the power ballad "Run," Strait's loose-limbed vocal style slams head-on into a ponderous, synthesizer-heavy arrangement with disastrous results. A few more like the album's closer, a superb interpretation of Merle Haggard's blissful "My Life's Been Grand," would have helped. --Rich Kienzle

5 out of 5 stars Yummy Spanish Guitar.......2007-05-28

This is my single most favorite George CD. Run is a classic already, and is one of my all-time favorites. Scratch that. It is. From the lucious, sexy, spanish guitar, the lyrics are simple, but amazingly sing-able and nice.
He also remakes Stars on the water, the upbeat catchy tune that makes you think of country dancehalls.
It also includes the hit she'll leave you with a smile. With Good time charleys , and my life's been grand it's a throw back to old country, and original strait tunes, fused with his newer, latest catchy one-liner tunes. It's the best of both worlds, no matter which George you're in love with.

5 out of 5 stars Here we go again...........2006-04-18

I never used to like arguing with other reviewers, but I find that it is becoming increasingly necessary to do so. Some people will write reviews without know fully what they are talking about. Someone has previously commented on how Mr. Strait doesnt write any songs. A-hem! George Strait is a Cowboy. He runs a ranch. He raises a family. He rides and Ropes. He Rodeos. He does it all. If you think you can live the life that King George does, and still write music for an album every single year (except '95), then be my guest. Id love to see anyone do it. No way pal. Wont Happen. This is a real Cowboy here. Not just a singer with a cowboy hat on.
Now as far as the music on this disc goes... The title says it all. This is somewhat of a departure from the classic country sound we are used to from GS, but that doesnt take anything away from the music at all. A couple of tracks on here use a little bit of drum programming, and one uses a computer fed voice track. Thats pretty much it as far a non-traditional country goes. In fact, one of those songs with the programming is one of the best songs George has recorded in a while, and that's the title track itself. The mood is just breathtaking on this one. There are a couple hits on this one that we heard on the radio... "Run," and "Livin and livin well." Both great songs, and both very representive of the rest of the album. The tone is set off right from the start with "Run," and that carries the album. Its still real country, its still George Strait. This is one of those CDs that goes perfect with the artist. If you like George at all, you cant not like this CD. And for the price it is now, you cant go wrong. Give it a try, if you dont like it, sell it. You wont need to do the latter though. It is a wonderful representation of the living legend that is George Strait, and an all around great COUNTRY album.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty Decent Album for a Guy Who Just Likes to put out Albums.......2005-10-17

I mean he has an album out almost every year and doesn't have much to show for it. Oh well, I guess just like almost every other country artist, it's easy to put out an annual album when you don't write any of the music. Anyway, I like the openeing 3 songs which are kind of rockish and R&Bish. The first song is a good opener and has fairly good harmonies. Run is good as well and uses a drum machine for the verses which is a little rare in country. Stars on the water is fine and it has some digital voicing that works well. After the 1st three tracks I lose interest but it's a nice start. Strait has a lot of good stuff but his albums are hard to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars GEORGE'S BEST STUDIO ALBUM.......2005-01-01

I am a George Strait Completist, so I really know his music well. Of ANY album he ever made (And I have them all), I reach for this one first (I do prefer disk 3 of "Strait Out Of The Box" more, but that is it). This song has my favorite George song "Living And Living Well", and every song on this CD is flawless 10/10 (And there are only two others which get that review "Something Special", and "Pure Country"). If you are not familiar with George's work, this is a great place to start, and if you are, and don't have this CD what are you waiting for? Let me say one more thing, I have seen some people writting in, and being critical of GS for coming out with hit songs, but NOT great albums, let me say how dead WRONG they are, and this CD is one example of it. Another is the fact that ALL GS CDs are still available to purchase(Unlike many other artists), which proves there is a market for his music after OVER TWENTY YEARS in the business. King George still rules.

5 out of 5 stars One of the many great albums.......2004-10-08

The Album "Road Less Traveled" is the typical sound of George Strait. The instruments have a simple sound that is Strait country; it does not have the influences of pop music like so much of the other country these days has. Some of his songs do have a Spanish influence which is typical for country old and new. In fact some of his songs talk about Mexico, and I think he even owns a bar in Mexico. He lives close to Mexico in south Texas. This album has the George strait sound, his voice is the most prominent feature with simple melody to back him up. Although his rhythms in every song are unique there is always an easy to follow beat. I do not think that George has ever had a bad album but this would have to be one of my favorites because I really enjoy every song on it. My second favorite album would be "Latest Greatest Straitest Hits". It has some of his best songs from several of his later albums. I would have chosen a couple of different songs that were some of my favorites but it is a very good album. Chris Leadoux is another singer that has a similar style. Chris has not released anything real new but his greatest hits album is a very good one. Both of these artists have a real country sound. Both were real cowboys before they started singing. George worked on a ranch in south Texas and Chris was a professional rodeo cowboy. So if you want to hear some real and good country you should check out this album.

4 out of 5 stars Not for the musically timid.......2007-01-05

Up until this album, I had been on a steady diet of mainstream rock and metal. Sure I had heard of the likes of Satch and Vai, but I never got around to listening to them. Suffice to say, instrumental guitar music was something I was most definitely NOT familiar with.
This all changed when my Art teacher had me listen to The Road Less Traveled. I was hearing sounds that I never knew were possible. I was hearing music done in a totally different way! Mattias seems like a funny guy to me, and you can hear it in his compositions. Songs like There's No Money in Jazz and One String Solo are hilarious, and Print This is a humorous take on a device many of us are familiar with.
Overall, from this album I learned two important lessons. One is that it is ALWAYS cool to be able to shred, and two is that being a musician doesn't mean you have to be serious. Definitely a good buy for any guitarist looking for a dose of fresh air.

5 out of 5 stars Get yer freak on.......2006-10-17

A very adverturous and refreshing take on the guitar rock instrumental thing. If you're really into music like CCR and Jim Croce it's probably not for you. If you want something outside of the warm safe confines of the easily accessible, and ever predictable, mainstream try this one. He's heavily Zappa influenced so that should tell you where he's going with his music

1 out of 5 stars Pointless.......2006-08-09

This album is a mess. It bounces around and resembles a long warm up. It does not seem to have a direction as it bounces around between a lot of different types of music and never finds a home with any of them.

5 out of 5 stars Goddie goddie .......2006-03-01

It's simply a great cd, very innovative, if you like the first freak guitar, this is what you have been waiting for.

For those who don't have heard the first cd, or any of the freak kitchen cd's: If you want to hear honest music, without pretentions, buy it.

Mattias its a very kind person, I recently knew him in mexico city, his music it's a reflect of his personality.

5 out of 5 stars Humor and chops.......2006-02-18

Never have I heard musical "humor" conveyed so well as on this breakthrough album. The production is seamless, and Eklundh's high-level chops are not threatening, that is, his humor and musicality buffer the typical "macho" delivery of shred-guitar playing, and indeed evolves it into, dare I say, ART.

For their third album, the youthful Irish band Danu has moved in a reflective, slightly country-tinged direction. There have been changes in the line-up, too; guitarist Donal Clancy (his father Liam was one of the original Clancy Brothers) adds a slant of golden afternoon light to the instrumentals, and Muireann Nic Amhranai's straightforward yet evocative alto has replaced Ciaran O'Gealbhain's otherworldly tenor. There is also a delightful guest turn by fiddler John Sheahan, whose bow channels the searing, treble-laced tone and weightless attack of the legendary traveling players. The current set list easily confirms Danu's mastery of Irish traditions but they have also gone questing beyond the Celtic pale, essaying an American folk tune ("Peg And Awl") and "Farewell, Farewell" by British folk-rocker Richard Thompson. They make both their own, much as their embattled forebears, when forbidden to speak Gaelic, transformed the English language into something altogether mystical and grand. --Christina Roden

Danú's "The Road Less Traveled" is a very entertaining album with an excellent selection of jigs, reels, and songs. The 6th track, "Garech's Wedding/Reel Gan Ainm/The Moving Bog/Cliffs of GlenColmCille" is particularly good, and Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh's vocals on songs such as "Co. Down" and "Beannacht ó Rí na hAoine" are outstanding. Overall, this album is very comparable in its high quality to Danú's more recent "When All Is Said And Done," lacking only the high energy opening track of that album. This young group represents the very best in Irish music.

5 out of 5 stars The Cream of the Crop.......2005-07-15

If you like Irish music you will be positively wowed by the virtuosity, perfection, brilliance, genius, etc. etc. etc. of Danu. These folks are in a class by themselves. If you've never liked Irish music or have just been indifferent to it, this is the group to change your mind. The Road Less Traveled is an impeccably performed collection of tunes that you will never tire of. And if you see a notice of Danu coming to your town, run, don't walk, and get to the show. They are as electrifying in person as they are on record. No special effects here. Just world-class Irish music.

5 out of 5 stars Favorite band next to Dervish..........2004-11-06

I've seen these guys twice- once here in the US and then again in Ireland, so I've seen both their American-oriented show, and their more traditional show... And I've got to say... wow... i never actually listened to them before seeing them at the Dublin Irish fest in Ohio, but when I heard "County Down' and 'Farewell Farewell', it's just gone from there. The vocals are just unbelieveable (am a Celtic vocalist myself) As of yet I don't own my own copy of this album, but from what I've heard from it, I am definitely going to get it the next chance I have! It was also the cd we listened to on one of our last days in Ireland.

5 out of 5 stars Irish music as good as it gets.......2004-06-03

Danu is an Irish traditional music group based in Co. Waterford, made up of seven young musicians from counties Waterford, Dublin, Kerry and Donegal. Their third album is a vibrant traditional affair of instrumentals and songs, all skilfully arranged using a wide array of instruments like accordion, fiddle, guitar, uilleann pipes, whistles, bouzouki and bodhran. The medleys move along at an urgent pace, each member taking turns to strut their stuff, while Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh's singing is as sweet and attractive as it comes. Tommy Sand's "County Down", the North American "Peg and Awl", Richard Thompson's "Farewell Farewell" (made famous by Sandy Denny), and various Gaelic songs have a delightful poignancy, while the many instrumentals are bright, energetic and joyful. It is clear that this very cohesive band is steeped in tradition and enjoys being so. Delightful.

5 out of 5 stars Really awesome band!!!.......2004-04-20

Danu has been a favorite of mine for quite a while... I'd been looking forward to this cd for a long time!!! Ciaran had a beautiful voice, but Muireann has a lovely voice too and does her songs really very well. Although my favorite of their cds still remains Think Before you Think, this one is right up there with it!!! I would highly recommend this cd.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing DVD.......2007-05-09

No one respects and loves Melissa more than I do. But it's my love for her music videos that prompts me to share how disappointed I was with the DVD in this combo release. I have been looking forward to a DVD collection of all of her promo music videos and this was THE OPPORTUNITY to make it happen. I was devastated when only 6 promo videos were included. The rest are live performances. Why!!! Live performances are readily available on prior releases. But fans have been anxiously awaiting for a collection of her music videos, which are priceless works of art. The audio track for my favorite music video "Your Little Secret" isn't even available on the audio portion of the CD. I don't understand how this can be. I personally feel Melissa should not participate in compiling Greatest Hits releases because she does not approach it from the perspective of a fan. Key omissions in this release may be attributed to reasons that are emotional and not with the fan in mind. I know many fans of ME may think this is a harsh review, but it comes from the heart. Just like Melissa's music comes from her heart. And I would like to believe that if she read this review she would appreciate the sincere plea from a fan who dearly loves her.

2. Like the Way I Do-music video
3. Bring Me Some Water-"inside track with Graham Nash"

5 out of 5 stars Melissa's Best Songs!.......2007-01-10

For the Melissa Etheridge fan, this is the ultimate collection since it contains all of Melissa's hits from her past albums.

A must have for all Melissa's fans...even the sequence of the songs is greatly planned so that you feel that you are at a concert, letting Melissa's performance aspire you!

5 out of 5 stars Melissa Etheridge - An American Treasure.......2005-12-08

Melissa continues to evolve as an American icon of music as she allows her spirit to soar now that she has been embraced in the strong yet tender arms of her soul mate, has overcome breast cancer, and has allowed herself to look back at her illustrious career.

Her articulate and intimate explanation on the DVD of the songs she chose as her "greatest hits" portrays her passion for not only music, but humanity as well. Her profound need to communicate with each of us enables her songs to resonate - both her music and her lyrics - because they are honest, well crafted and sincere.

Melissa Etheridge is an American treasure. I hope we will be blessed with her insight, joy, creative genius and skill for many years to come. The wonderful combination of music, videos and interviews with Melissa will bring you back to this CD and DVD many many times.

I hope Melissa will consider naming her next CD "Thrive",... because I truly believe she will personally "thrive" now that she has heard the "voice" of her soul.

5 out of 5 stars Rarities on DVD - Worth The Extra Money.......2005-11-19

I am THRILLED that ME included Rarities on the DVD. She includes the Music Videos from back in the day...Similar Features, 1989 and Like the Way I do, 88. A pre blonde Melissa really brought me back to the first time I saw her live. There is also some live videos from 90 - 00.

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation, First Time Video Release.......2005-11-18

There are plenty of women in music finally getting recognized for how great they are, and in my opinion, Melissa is the best of the best.

Sorry, Sheryl.

Yeah, I said it. (Sheryl lovers will enjoy saying my review didn't help, but like I care.)

Well, ok, to the product. This is the only place you can find a collection of her videos. She's never released them on VHS or DVD, so this is only place you can get them. She finally put out two live concerts over the past few years, but the videos are something the fans have been wanting for a long time, and I love that they are included with the deluxe set, rather than a stand alone DVD.

If you aren't familiar with her earlier work, I won't be able to explain to you how great it is in a review. "Like The Way I Do," the single that launched her career with a live performance at the Grammy's is worth the price alone. The live version is actually on a collection of "Grammy's Greatest Moments" on CD, it was that good.

Of course, I believe she keeps on getting better, so I was a bit disappointed that not many songs from Breakdown or Skin were included on the CD. Melissa herself has said that Breakdown was an album that was kind of all over the place, and that's why people didn't really react to it that well, but I have to disagree. My life is often all over the place, and that is my favorite album, so I'm bummed about that. Again, I also liked Skin a lot, and I thought The Different should have been on here.

Of course, we have new material on here, too. Her covers of Tom Petty's Refugee and Janis' 'Piece of My Heart' are great. I think the whole world saw her other greatest Grammy performance just recently, where she preformed with Joss Stone (poor chick, although she was very good, I felt sorry for her because she was just totally overshadowed) so of course we had to have a version on here. (And hey Melissa, should you ever read this, a big Thank You. My father got a great boost to his spirits from that performance. He was diagnosed with a different form of cancer soon before that, and he rattled on excitedly about how cool he thought it was and wanted hear all of your stuff from my collection. Pretty neat, I thought.)

Considering the above, the last of the new songs, This Is Not Goodbye and I Run For Life were a bit difficult to listen to without crying, but I'm greatful for them nonetheless.

Again, a great hearty thanks to Melissa for an amazing catalog of great music, and inspiration to boot.

Product Description

This is a wonderful collection for fans of American composers and choral works alike. Stephen Shewan writes music in all media but has a special affinity for vocal and ensemble works (these can be heard on an earlier Albany release, TROY149). The Celebration Overture, written in honor of the 50th anniversary of KUHF-FM, Houston, Texas, is both celebratory and optimistic. Much of the same spirit carries over to For Dancing Hearts and Tunes while the two other choral pieces reflect a more meditative mood. Randall Thompson didn't compose a particularly large catalog of works but his choral works (which can be heard by these same forces on TROY362) and his beloved Symphony No.2 have assured him a place in the American repertoire. Frostiana, based on Robert Frost poems, is as perfect an example of his charm and nationalistic spirit as one could hope to hear. Ron Nelson writes some of the most exuberant music for band ever composed, and you might remember his wonderfully breezy Savannah River Holiday recorded so many years ago by Howard Hanson. The Te Deum was commissioned by the United States Air Force Band and Singing Sergeants. It is a work full of color, splendor and rich sonorities. Finally we have a work by the Czech-born Nelhybel, a truly prolific composer (over 400 published works) who really deserves greater exposure. The Psalm 150 is a rich, reverent work. The Roberts Wesleyan College Chorale is noted for its unique sound and performs regularly with the Rochester Philharmonic in a wide-ranging repertoire.

4 out of 5 stars More!.......2005-12-29

When listening to the first track on the recording, I was struck by the resemblance to an American composer not even represented on the album, Aaron Copland. It is always dangerous to say this - I do not mean the the composer has in any way copied Copland, but that the celebratory spirit evident reminds me of the spirit present in Copland's work. My only complaint about this wonderful performance is that it leaves one wanting more - I could wish for a large work/suite. I also must single out Shewan's "For Dancing Hearts and Tunes" as another such example of Americana.

The performance by the Roberts Wesleyan Chorale is exemplary, although the voices seem somewhat muted, almost background to the instruments (this being the reason that I rated the recording 4 stars instead of 5).

The performances on the remainder of the compositions are very good to excellent, particularly on "Choose Something Like Star" from Randall Thompson's "Frostiana" and Ron Nelson's "Te Deum Laudamus".

This recording would certainly be a must-have for any collection of chorale music, let alone collections of American music.

I've been listening to Unknown Prophets for about 3 years now. Their music doesn't advocate rape, murder, drugs, money, objectify women, etc.
They are truley the epitome of hip-hop. I always thought mos def and talib kweli were real, but Unknown Prophets are beyond real. I feel as if they are here to change the worthless rap scene for the best.

    Keep it going U.P.

5 out of 5 stars An alternate route to paradise.......2006-03-07

The Unknown Prophets are THE underground hip-hop collective from Northeast Minneapolis. They are by far the most underrated hip-hop group of the century. Big Jess (producer/emcee), Mad Son (emcee) and Willy Lose (DJ) are all back to shock listeners once again with their most highly anticipated release of their career - "The Road Less Traveled". It's been in the works for the last 3-4 years and all I can say is, prepare to be blown away. First of all, lets start with the album's artwork - a truly important part of this release. Artist Chris Allen (aka Inkproof) outdid himself on this one. This is by far the best art I've yet to see from an Unknown Prophets release. It looks sharp and professional from every angle, as well as the interior. It's definitely a selling point to the amount of sincerity they're including into the album. Simply put, this is a more easily marketable product (one of the main reasons two of my friends bought the album was because of the artwork). Now let's move on to the music.

"Time To Move Forward" (produced by Fero Navi) - A larger than life intro that lets long-time fans know that it was totally worth the wait. The production hits hard with Willy Lose's dope scratching and cuts.

"Mr. Mainstream" (produced by Big Jess) - Those who are familiar with the Unknown Prophets know that they definitely deserve a shot at some real exposure. The song centers around a phone message to "William Mainstream". It's not that they are starving to be on MTV. They want to change the industry for the better. It's basically everything you would want to say to a pompous money grubbing record executive.

"Our Time Now" (produced by Big Jess, additional vocals by Brent Snyder) - This song reminds me of a Big Jess solo tune - "All I Know", which isn't a bad thing. This song has one of the best messages on the album. The lyrics are true to heart and deeply sincere. This is the most conscious the Prophets get. For the uninitiated, they explain the course of their career from day one. It seems especially wrenching when they talk about losing steam after their sophomore album as their exposure slowly declined. It's the uneasy reality of knowing that the buzz wouldn't last forever. By time the song's over, they have us all believing that this is going to be the year of the Prophets.

"Not Today" (produced by Big Jess) - Big Jess belts out a haunting orchestra laced beat here that's quite memorable. Jess and Son show that they're major forces to be reckoned with as they bring substance to the game.

"Let It Loose" (additional vocals by Joia Senser and Craig D.) - The beats are banging, and with the addition of the soaring choruses, this song sounds very mainstream, but still conveys an underground feel and message.

"The Road Less Traveled" (produced by Fero Navi) - Navi whips up a killer beat here. It's guitar and harmonica loop gives it a very memorable southern rock feel.

"Dive In" (produced by Big Jess) - This one includes some of my favorite production on the record. Jess pulls together some sweet sped up wood wind and string instruments to create a soundscape that's just plain addictive. The song deals with young adolescents that "dive in" to situations to quickly, like marriage or pregnancy.

"Lord Please" (produced by Big Jess) - Mad Son shines here. Jess' atmospheric loop intertwines with both of their spiritual flows. The enhanced CD also offers a sweet video for this song.

"Move Mountains" (produced by Big Jess, co-produced by Mizzo, additional vocals by Stokely Williams, guitar by Mad Son, accordion by Mary MacCarthy) - Definitely a standout track. Man, there needs to be more accordion in hip-hop music. This song has a quiet, tranquil, head nodding feel. It's groove will definitely sink it's hooks into you.

"Imagination" (produced by Big Jess, additional vocals by Samahra) - I've seen Samahra a few times, she's a cool chick. She adds to the song nicely with some soothing vocals. Big Jess shines here with some truly soulful lyrics.

"This Song" (produced by Big Jess) - One of the best tracks on the album. This is sure to be a live show stamp before too long. It's got hard crunching electric guitars buzzing throughout. It's certainly a get-out-of-your-seat jam.

"Waves" (produced by Big Jess) -This is yet another profound message-track that emulates that fact the Big Jess and Mad Son have a love for hip-hop that his unmatched by the masses. True hunger.

"Lost In Time" (produced by Big Jess, guitar by Mad Son) - Mad Son shines here. For those who don't know, he used to play a lot of guitar before he got into the hip-hop scene. The guitar work adds a soothing sincere edge to the reality of their story rhymes.

"Grown" (produced by Big Jess, co-produced by Mizzo, additional vocals by Joia Senser and Witney, saxophone by Sue McKenzie) - Like many of the tracks included here, this one marks a progression on how their songs are moving from standard loops and rhymes to solid compositions. This is definitely one of my favorites.

"Against The Grain" (produced by Big Jess) - This is also one of my favorites. The production is very addictive. When the track ends, you are left pondering their final mission statement, because it's really that true.

The reason I've stuck by the Prophets for so long is because their lyrics and writing are on a completely different level. Until I saw the Unknown Prophets, I hadn't seen anyone laying out their heart and soul on stage for the world to hear like these two have. There is just a profound amount of honesty and sincerity held within their music that I connect with on a surreal level. The beats weren't really a concern or the main part I was feeling at first. Since I've been following them, Big Jess' production improved with every release, bringing their message full circle like no other. With any luck, this will be the magnificent album that they win over the masses with.

    4 out of 5 stars A Slightly Different Bag............2004-11-29

This would be classified mostly as post bop and hard bop....but there are a few exceptions!

The first two selections, which are medium tempo with excellent harmonization of the horns, are a real treat. This is followed by a two part brooding ballad which has a beautiful exposition by tenor saxist Ralph Moore; the whole tune evocative as background music in a movie scene. The fifth cut is a great salsa original reminiscent of the style of Mongo Santamaria.

The sixth cut, Gothic 17, doesn't do anything for me! It apparently is an extension of a style of free funk avant garde originated by Ornette Coleman and taken further by altoist Steve Coleman. This style is known as M-base and numbers trombonist Robin Eubanks as well as Smith as practioners.

"Concerto In B.G.", dedicated to Benny Golson, utilizes his charateristic of bridging jazz and classical forms. This one spotlights Robin Eubanks on trombone, the piano of James Williams, and some drum breaks by Smith.

The title tune, the longest cut, has some intriguing time signatures. It starts out with some fine trio work for about five minutes, breaks into a repetitive theme which serves as a base for free style horn solos for approximately three minutes, and then reverts back to the trio to close out the remaining minute and a half.

All that said, the musicians are excellent, most of whom are recognizable to jazz fans (Robert Hurst, who played with Wynton Marsalis, James Williams on piano, trumpeter Wallace Roney, and the previously mentioned Ralph Moore, Steve Coleman and Robin Eubanks).

This cd will appeal to those familiar with the musicians, fans of small group hard bop or post bop, and most of all, those who want their jazz with a little more stretch or variation.

4 out of 5 stars allstar lineup that delivers.......1999-12-02

The first two pieces on this cd deliver beautifully. The entire cd is a little challenging, as two songs in the middle have slightly more "edge," but the final two pieces are wonderful. Smitty sounds great and wrote all of the tunes except one (which was written by B. Brufford for all of you Yes fans). Mostly they are very melodic. You have to love the prescence of the trombone, two saxes, & Wallace Rooney(trumpt.) Great music to cook to!
