Great Songs..........2007-07-18
Not definitive: Selling Melissa short.......2007-07-08
But more importantly, she has made some brilliant music with at least two five star albums. Both the debut and her breakthrough, "Yes I Am," are must-own records. Naturally, they are the two CD's from which the lion's share of "The Road Less Traveled" is culled; six of the 18 songs here. Add the six songs that are previously unreleased, and that leaves only six songs culled from the rest of Melissa's library.
The diference between this and the previous version is the addition of the Oscar winning "I Need To Wake Up" from "An Inconvenient Truth." The CD booklet is gone to make it more environmentaly freindly and the plactic jewel box is replaced by a recycled paper shell with foam tray. While it changes the packaging, it doesn't change the fact that there are too many ommissions here to make it listener friendly.
This presents a problem. It leaves off such terrific popular favorites and singles. "Dance Without Sleeping," "Your Little Secret," "Breathe" and the entire contents of "Skin" wind up being neglected. That is not to say that "The Road Less Traveled" is a poor collection; it's just that it is not as thorough as it could have been.
As for the new material, it's all good stuff. Melissa's covers of Tom Petty's "Refugee" and (finally!) a studio version of Janis Jopin's "Piece Of My Heart" are, alone, worth the price of the disc. Her anthems of survival "This Is Not Goodbye" and "I Run For Life" are heartfelt and solid. Too bad the collection is a little too tame and not enough crazy. I am sure the inevitable double disc collection will eventually appear, but for now, "The Road Less Traveled" is a less than perfect primer.
4.5 Stars... Definitive overview of Mellisa Etheridge's career.......2007-07-02
"Greatest Hits: The Road Less Traveled" (18 tracks, 76 min.) brings a terrific overview of Melissa's career. The set starts off with a nice new cover of the Tom Petty hit "Refugee". After that the set rolls chronologically. "The Way I Do" from her debut album is very typical of the "Etheridge sound": acoustic guitar driven rock-and-roll. I perseonally love that sound. 1993's "Yes I Am" album, arguably Melissa at her commercial peak, gets 3 tracks: "I'm The Only One", the beautiful "Come To My Window" (her biggest hit ever), and "If I Wanted To". Other highlights include "I Want To Come Over" and the new cover of Janis Joplin's "Piece of My Heart".
The reissue comes with a new track, the excellent "I Need to Wake Up", which plays over the closing credits of the "Inconvenient Truth" documentary. The song went on to win the Oscar for Best Original Song in the 2007 Oscars. Overall, this makes the compilation just that much better than the original 2005 compilation. If you were on the fence about getting this, go ahead and buy this, surely the definitive Melissa Etheridge compilation.
Coming Back To Her Window.......2007-03-17
Melissa Etheridge's 2007 re-released Greatest Hits: The Road Less Traveled, spans her near 20 year career with 18 tracks that are bold, and defiant to her voice. The songs here have all been remastered nicely, and sound better than they were released a few years ago. Although not much has changed on this record as before. The album still includes a lot of great tracks including I Want To Come Over, Come To My Window, I Am The Only One, and Ain't It Heavy. The album also includes her adult contemporary hit I Run For Life, and a cover of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Refugee. The only new addition in this reissuing is I Need To Wake Up, her Oscar-winning song from the Al Gore documentary, An Inconvient Truth. The song is very bold and speaks a clear message to life around us, and fits nicely in the package. Nevertheless, the album still overlooks a few great tracks like it did before such as Breathe, Your Little Secret, and her soulful song I Wanna Be In Love from her
album Skin.
Still, despte the record overlooking a few songs, Melissa Etheridge's Greatest Hits: The Road Less traveled isn't a bad record worth listening too, for anybody who doesn't own a Melissa Etheridge album. It is a little better than it was before. I still love listening to her music, and I hope she comes back with a new record soon. Even with all the stuff that is going on, many of us are still coming to her window for great music.

The sunset motif on the cover of George Strait's 28th MCA album since 1981 hints at a more private, thoughtful ambiance. This is reflected in the title song, the introspective "The Middle of Nowhere," and the contented (if bland) domesticity of "Living and Living Well." Strait adds a smoking revival of Chip Taylor's rockabilly homage "The Real Thing," though the convivial remake of Del Reeves's 1969 honky-tonk hit "Good Time Charley's" didn't need the annoying overdubbed barroom sounds. As always, letting Strait be Strait is the key. When that doesn't happen and unsuitable material enters the mix, things quickly falter, as they do on his tepid version of Rodney Crowell's "Stars on the Water" and the formulaic "Don't Tell Me You're Not in Love." On the power ballad "Run," Strait's loose-limbed vocal style slams head-on into a ponderous, synthesizer-heavy arrangement with disastrous results. A few more like the album's closer, a superb interpretation of Merle Haggard's blissful "My Life's Been Grand," would have helped. --Rich KienzleCustomer Reviews:
Yummy Spanish Guitar.......2007-05-28
He also remakes Stars on the water, the upbeat catchy tune that makes you think of country dancehalls.
It also includes the hit she'll leave you with a smile. With Good time charleys , and my life's been grand it's a throw back to old country, and original strait tunes, fused with his newer, latest catchy one-liner tunes. It's the best of both worlds, no matter which George you're in love with.
Here we go again...........2006-04-18
Now as far as the music on this disc goes... The title says it all. This is somewhat of a departure from the classic country sound we are used to from GS, but that doesnt take anything away from the music at all. A couple of tracks on here use a little bit of drum programming, and one uses a computer fed voice track. Thats pretty much it as far a non-traditional country goes. In fact, one of those songs with the programming is one of the best songs George has recorded in a while, and that's the title track itself. The mood is just breathtaking on this one. There are a couple hits on this one that we heard on the radio... "Run," and "Livin and livin well." Both great songs, and both very representive of the rest of the album. The tone is set off right from the start with "Run," and that carries the album. Its still real country, its still George Strait. This is one of those CDs that goes perfect with the artist. If you like George at all, you cant not like this CD. And for the price it is now, you cant go wrong. Give it a try, if you dont like it, sell it. You wont need to do the latter though. It is a wonderful representation of the living legend that is George Strait, and an all around great COUNTRY album.

Not for the musically timid.......2007-01-05
This all changed when my Art teacher had me listen to The Road Less Traveled. I was hearing sounds that I never knew were possible. I was hearing music done in a totally different way! Mattias seems like a funny guy to me, and you can hear it in his compositions. Songs like There's No Money in Jazz and One String Solo are hilarious, and Print This is a humorous take on a device many of us are familiar with.
Overall, from this album I learned two important lessons. One is that it is ALWAYS cool to be able to shred, and two is that being a musician doesn't mean you have to be serious. Definitely a good buy for any guitarist looking for a dose of fresh air.

For their third album, the youthful Irish band Danu has moved in a reflective, slightly country-tinged direction. There have been changes in the line-up, too; guitarist Donal Clancy (his father Liam was one of the original Clancy Brothers) adds a slant of golden afternoon light to the instrumentals, and Muireann Nic Amhranai's straightforward yet evocative alto has replaced Ciaran O'Gealbhain's otherworldly tenor. There is also a delightful guest turn by fiddler John Sheahan, whose bow channels the searing, treble-laced tone and weightless attack of the legendary traveling players. The current set list easily confirms Danu's mastery of Irish traditions but they have also gone questing beyond the Celtic pale, essaying an American folk tune ("Peg And Awl") and "Farewell, Farewell" by British folk-rocker Richard Thompson. They make both their own, much as their embattled forebears, when forbidden to speak Gaelic, transformed the English language into something altogether mystical and grand. --Christina RodenCustomer Reviews:

Melissa Etheridge - An American Treasure.......2005-12-08
Her articulate and intimate explanation on the DVD of the songs she chose as her "greatest hits" portrays her passion for not only music, but humanity as well. Her profound need to communicate with each of us enables her songs to resonate - both her music and her lyrics - because they are honest, well crafted and sincere.
Melissa Etheridge is an American treasure. I hope we will be blessed with her insight, joy, creative genius and skill for many years to come. The wonderful combination of music, videos and interviews with Melissa will bring you back to this CD and DVD many many times.
I hope Melissa will consider naming her next CD "Thrive",... because I truly believe she will personally "thrive" now that she has heard the "voice" of her soul.

Great Compilation, First Time Video Release.......2005-11-18
Sorry, Sheryl.
Yeah, I said it. (Sheryl lovers will enjoy saying my review didn't help, but like I care.)
Well, ok, to the product. This is the only place you can find a collection of her videos. She's never released them on VHS or DVD, so this is only place you can get them. She finally put out two live concerts over the past few years, but the videos are something the fans have been wanting for a long time, and I love that they are included with the deluxe set, rather than a stand alone DVD.
If you aren't familiar with her earlier work, I won't be able to explain to you how great it is in a review. "Like The Way I Do," the single that launched her career with a live performance at the Grammy's is worth the price alone. The live version is actually on a collection of "Grammy's Greatest Moments" on CD, it was that good.
Of course, I believe she keeps on getting better, so I was a bit disappointed that not many songs from Breakdown or Skin were included on the CD. Melissa herself has said that Breakdown was an album that was kind of all over the place, and that's why people didn't really react to it that well, but I have to disagree. My life is often all over the place, and that is my favorite album, so I'm bummed about that. Again, I also liked Skin a lot, and I thought The Different should have been on here.
Of course, we have new material on here, too. Her covers of Tom Petty's Refugee and Janis' 'Piece of My Heart' are great. I think the whole world saw her other greatest Grammy performance just recently, where she preformed with Joss Stone (poor chick, although she was very good, I felt sorry for her because she was just totally overshadowed) so of course we had to have a version on here. (And hey Melissa, should you ever read this, a big Thank You. My father got a great boost to his spirits from that performance. He was diagnosed with a different form of cancer soon before that, and he rattled on excitedly about how cool he thought it was and wanted hear all of your stuff from my collection. Pretty neat, I thought.)
Considering the above, the last of the new songs, This Is Not Goodbye and I Run For Life were a bit difficult to listen to without crying, but I'm greatful for them nonetheless.
Again, a great hearty thanks to Melissa for an amazing catalog of great music, and inspiration to boot.

- Celebration Overture
- Frostiana
- Te Deum Laudamus

- Land of Rest
- Psalm 150
Product Description
This is a wonderful collection for fans of American composers and choral works alike. Stephen Shewan writes music in all media but has a special affinity for vocal and ensemble works (these can be heard on an earlier Albany release, TROY149). The Celebration Overture, written in honor of the 50th anniversary of KUHF-FM, Houston, Texas, is both celebratory and optimistic. Much of the same spirit carries over to For Dancing Hearts and Tunes while the two other choral pieces reflect a more meditative mood. Randall Thompson didn't compose a particularly large catalog of works but his choral works (which can be heard by these same forces on TROY362) and his beloved Symphony No.2 have assured him a place in the American repertoire. Frostiana, based on Robert Frost poems, is as perfect an example of his charm and nationalistic spirit as one could hope to hear. Ron Nelson writes some of the most exuberant music for band ever composed, and you might remember his wonderfully breezy Savannah River Holiday recorded so many years ago by Howard Hanson. The Te Deum was commissioned by the United States Air Force Band and Singing Sergeants. It is a work full of color, splendor and rich sonorities. Finally we have a work by the Czech-born Nelhybel, a truly prolific composer (over 400 published works) who really deserves greater exposure. The Psalm 150 is a rich, reverent work. The Roberts Wesleyan College Chorale is noted for its unique sound and performs regularly with the Rochester Philharmonic in a wide-ranging repertoire.Customer Reviews:
More!.......2005-12-29
The performance by the Roberts Wesleyan Chorale is exemplary, although the voices seem somewhat muted, almost background to the instruments (this being the reason that I rated the recording 4 stars instead of 5).
The performances on the remainder of the compositions are very good to excellent, particularly on "Choose Something Like Star" from Randall Thompson's "Frostiana" and Ron Nelson's "Te Deum Laudamus".
This recording would certainly be a must-have for any collection of chorale music, let alone collections of American music.

An alternate route to paradise.......2006-03-07
"Time To Move Forward" (produced by Fero Navi) - A larger than life intro that lets long-time fans know that it was totally worth the wait. The production hits hard with Willy Lose's dope scratching and cuts.
"Mr. Mainstream" (produced by Big Jess) - Those who are familiar with the Unknown Prophets know that they definitely deserve a shot at some real exposure. The song centers around a phone message to "William Mainstream". It's not that they are starving to be on MTV. They want to change the industry for the better. It's basically everything you would want to say to a pompous money grubbing record executive.
"Our Time Now" (produced by Big Jess, additional vocals by Brent Snyder) - This song reminds me of a Big Jess solo tune - "All I Know", which isn't a bad thing. This song has one of the best messages on the album. The lyrics are true to heart and deeply sincere. This is the most conscious the Prophets get. For the uninitiated, they explain the course of their career from day one. It seems especially wrenching when they talk about losing steam after their sophomore album as their exposure slowly declined. It's the uneasy reality of knowing that the buzz wouldn't last forever. By time the song's over, they have us all believing that this is going to be the year of the Prophets.
"Not Today" (produced by Big Jess) - Big Jess belts out a haunting orchestra laced beat here that's quite memorable. Jess and Son show that they're major forces to be reckoned with as they bring substance to the game.
"Let It Loose" (additional vocals by Joia Senser and Craig D.) - The beats are banging, and with the addition of the soaring choruses, this song sounds very mainstream, but still conveys an underground feel and message.
"The Road Less Traveled" (produced by Fero Navi) - Navi whips up a killer beat here. It's guitar and harmonica loop gives it a very memorable southern rock feel.
"Dive In" (produced by Big Jess) - This one includes some of my favorite production on the record. Jess pulls together some sweet sped up wood wind and string instruments to create a soundscape that's just plain addictive. The song deals with young adolescents that "dive in" to situations to quickly, like marriage or pregnancy.
"Lord Please" (produced by Big Jess) - Mad Son shines here. Jess' atmospheric loop intertwines with both of their spiritual flows. The enhanced CD also offers a sweet video for this song.
"Move Mountains" (produced by Big Jess, co-produced by Mizzo, additional vocals by Stokely Williams, guitar by Mad Son, accordion by Mary MacCarthy) - Definitely a standout track. Man, there needs to be more accordion in hip-hop music. This song has a quiet, tranquil, head nodding feel. It's groove will definitely sink it's hooks into you.
"Imagination" (produced by Big Jess, additional vocals by Samahra) - I've seen Samahra a few times, she's a cool chick. She adds to the song nicely with some soothing vocals. Big Jess shines here with some truly soulful lyrics.
"This Song" (produced by Big Jess) - One of the best tracks on the album. This is sure to be a live show stamp before too long. It's got hard crunching electric guitars buzzing throughout. It's certainly a get-out-of-your-seat jam.
"Waves" (produced by Big Jess) -This is yet another profound message-track that emulates that fact the Big Jess and Mad Son have a love for hip-hop that his unmatched by the masses. True hunger.
"Lost In Time" (produced by Big Jess, guitar by Mad Son) - Mad Son shines here. For those who don't know, he used to play a lot of guitar before he got into the hip-hop scene. The guitar work adds a soothing sincere edge to the reality of their story rhymes.
"Grown" (produced by Big Jess, co-produced by Mizzo, additional vocals by Joia Senser and Witney, saxophone by Sue McKenzie) - Like many of the tracks included here, this one marks a progression on how their songs are moving from standard loops and rhymes to solid compositions. This is definitely one of my favorites.
"Against The Grain" (produced by Big Jess) - This is also one of my favorites. The production is very addictive. When the track ends, you are left pondering their final mission statement, because it's really that true.
The reason I've stuck by the Prophets for so long is because their lyrics and writing are on a completely different level. Until I saw the Unknown Prophets, I hadn't seen anyone laying out their heart and soul on stage for the world to hear like these two have. There is just a profound amount of honesty and sincerity held within their music that I connect with on a surreal level. The beats weren't really a concern or the main part I was feeling at first. Since I've been following them, Big Jess' production improved with every release, bringing their message full circle like no other. With any luck, this will be the magnificent album that they win over the masses with.

A Slightly Different Bag............2004-11-29
The first two selections, which are medium tempo with excellent harmonization of the horns, are a real treat. This is followed by a two part brooding ballad which has a beautiful exposition by tenor saxist Ralph Moore; the whole tune evocative as background music in a movie scene. The fifth cut is a great salsa original reminiscent of the style of Mongo Santamaria.
The sixth cut, Gothic 17, doesn't do anything for me! It apparently is an extension of a style of free funk avant garde originated by Ornette Coleman and taken further by altoist Steve Coleman. This style is known as M-base and numbers trombonist Robin Eubanks as well as Smith as practioners.
"Concerto In B.G.", dedicated to Benny Golson, utilizes his charateristic of bridging jazz and classical forms. This one spotlights Robin Eubanks on trombone, the piano of James Williams, and some drum breaks by Smith.
The title tune, the longest cut, has some intriguing time signatures. It starts out with some fine trio work for about five minutes, breaks into a repetitive theme which serves as a base for free style horn solos for approximately three minutes, and then reverts back to the trio to close out the remaining minute and a half.
All that said, the musicians are excellent, most of whom are recognizable to jazz fans (Robert Hurst, who played with Wynton Marsalis, James Williams on piano, trumpeter Wallace Roney, and the previously mentioned Ralph Moore, Steve Coleman and Robin Eubanks).
This cd will appeal to those familiar with the musicians, fans of small group hard bop or post bop, and most of all, those who want their jazz with a little more stretch or variation.
