"...a masterful release by an established synthesizer artist." --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Product Description
Set Free deserves a place next to the symphonic space-music classic of Novus Magnificat. This release journeys even deeper into the intensely moving electronic soundscapes that was developed in other recordings. Newly noticeable are rhythmic influences from the Balinese and African cultures that are unabashedly ritualistic and celebratory in nature. But, Demby has not forgotten her roots; the last four tracks, taken together, create a majestic celestial voyage for inner travelers.

"Set Free is a recording of beautiful creative virtuosity....ecstatic, majestic, meditative spacemusic. " - New Frontier

"The best music Constance Demby has ever written. I believe that Set Free will set a new standard. This is truly space/new age music at its best. Pick up Set Free and listen to a masterpiece." - Synthesis

"An extraordinary release... Rhythmic influences that are unabashedly ritualistic and celebratory, plus a majestic celestial voyage for inner travelers. Set Free is a first-rate album by an artist in her prime. " - New Age Retailer

"A rich, diverse and fascinating album, bubbling with vibrant life, full of tenderness and grand magnificence, joyful orchestral anthems and a general mood of celebration and high energy. - Heartsong Review

"There is in this music a spirit of joy and breakthrough so deep, so full that it deserves a worldwide audience. Set Free demonstrates Demby's range, her capacity to explore another phase of the great cycle, another mood, another window on another world. - Pathways

"The new album by Constance Demby is the most astonishing to date. There is visionary force, an internal dynamic and purity, and immense feeling in this work.. At a time when the Schulzes, Tangerine Dreams and others! still swear by their drum machines, here is electronic music which surpasses our expectations. "- Crystal Infos

"Albums like this one will make you realize that we don't quite know yet what New Age music is all about. ....with its overflow of sounds, it might make much of your recorded collection seem tame.." - Arizona Light

"...In some ways she's becoming more masterful... Mother of the World, with its soaring piano solos, shrouded vocals, and soaring string accompaniments, is one of the most poignant melodic moments in Demby's repertoire. The whole thing is assembled with such freshness, skill and expressive validity that it's hard to resist." - CD Review --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

5 out of 5 stars Good Old Boy.......2007-07-24

I was at a Dale Watson show in Newcastle, Australia and Dale mentioned James hand as a great singer/songwriter. I took note and ordered this album. Once received, it has NOT been off my CD player/s since; and I got it at the end of April 07!!!!! This album is probably one of the finest honky-tonk albums ever to be released. And to think James wrote all the material!! I would put this right up there with anything Hank Williams has done and that's saying something. Before you scoff at that, give this album a good listen and then tell me I'm wrong.

The production and playing on this record are first rate. It was produced by Ray Benson (of AATW) and Lloyd Maines with Red Volkaart and Lloyd playing superb guitar and steel respectively. But it's James' voice and songwritng which makes this an absolutely essential country album. His voice cracks slightly now and again as though his heart is about to break and it will send shivers down your spine. His songs are quite personal and show a life of hard times, lost love, heavy drinking and broken hearts; all classic country music fare but James does it better than just about anyone.

Just get this album, play it to death and you'll be in Honky Tonk heaven.

5 out of 5 stars Good stuff.......2007-05-19

My husband had the opportunity to see James Hand...and talk with him...at a small bar in Richmond. We since then have purchased his CD for other people also.Good Stuff!!! I am not a big country music fan...but I really like his voice...this is real country music.

5 out of 5 stars hard hard and even harder core country!!!.......2007-05-13

There should be a caution label on this cd much like the rappers have on they're cds warning you. If you have been listening to what nashville puts out as country these days and thats all you know James Hand will destroy your mind lol. A celebration of hard core Texas honky tonk and of course its all wonderful. He's much like these extreme hot sauces that can put you in the hospital if your not careful, but once handled you got to go even hotter a pure addiction this brother is James Hand!! Testify!!! Hell this would be too heavy for 1967 country figure it out for 2007 lol. This ol boy aint retro or playing a part hes pure country and thats a fact. Fantastic.

5 out of 5 stars Aged to perfection.......2007-03-03

Now here is one of the best "new" voices to come down the pike. I bought this one on a whim, after reading a few of the earlier reviews; and I'm glad I did. I really cannot do this man justice with a few written words, so you'll just have to buy the CD and enjoy it. James Hand picks up where the great Vernon Oxford left off. True, James continues much in the same vein as Hank Williams and Frankie Miller, but he's also adopted the modern shuffle and rhythm that Vernon Oxford did in his early years. In other words, this is great honky-tonk music. Maybe not quite up to the standards of Charlie Walker, but given time, I think James Hand will put his brand on "bar-room country"....actually, I think he had the potential to rule that sadly-shrinking genre we call Honky-Tonk. He is to Hank Williams, what Justin Trevino is to Johnny Bush, or Dale Watson is to Merle; and most importantly, James is not a mere imitator. There are 12 numbers here, and they're all excellent. Personal favorites include "Little Bitty Slip", "Baby, Baby,.....", and "In the Corner.....". If you've become disheartened (or just plain pissed-off) at the crap being pushed as country music today, then get this one; it will restore your faith. A+++++++++++++++++++++

5 out of 5 stars Love it!.......2007-02-23

I am not a country music fan, but I heard this one played and reviewed on NPR, and ordered it. I may not be a country music fan, but I AM a James Hand fan.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent CD From "God's Property" Alumni.......2006-07-30

When I heard "Set Me Free" on the radio here in Chicago, I knew those voices and production style sounded familiar. I loved the song, then I bought the full CD- and loved all of it! Then when I heard Myron Butler did some things with Kirk Franklin, I went to my "God's Property From Kirk Franklin's Nu Nation" CD, looked through the credits, and noticed that basically all the singers, musicians, and song writers, from the Myron Butler & Levi project played major roles on the God's Property CD. You may remember Myron Butler singing the lead on "Faith" (the song where he said he had "mustard seed" faith). The only thing that surprised me about all this was that MB and the the rest of the talented crew didn't come out with anything as a unit before this (at least as far as I know).

Everything about the two projects is so similar- although they are definitely two distinct projects- and that is an excellent thing! Upbeat songs to go along with the more mellow songs, excellent musicianship by the band, and most importantly, the lyrics of all the songs emphasize a focus on God and our need to uplift Him, and stay true to the course He has laid for us. My personal favorites are "Set Me Free", "I Can", "That's Who You Are", and "Latter Rain", but I can easily listen to the entire CD without skipping a track.

If you liked the "God's Property" sound, you will definitely enjoy this CD. Get it and receive your blessing!

American Analog Set is one of the most endearing bands you've probably never heard of. AmAnSet, as they are sometimes known, have spent 10 years writing and recording six full-length CDs that are religiously loved by fans; their new disc, Set Free, is likely to be similarly worshipped. Those unfamiliar with the group's gorgeously floaty sounds deserve an analogy, so here's one to get you started: imagine that the late singer/songwriter Elliott Smith did a disc of lullabies, sometimes solo, occasionally backed by Stereolab. Sounds good, doesn't it? In fact, it's great. American Analog Set's beauty lies in its combination of simplicity, candor, and yes, repetition. There are some amazing moments on this disc; "Cool Kids Keep" pulsates with a subtle groove, while "She's Half" contains the kind of fragile beauty that can cause a full body ache. Set Free is the musical equivalent of a an old fleece hoodie. While this music can't change the world, it can make people happier, calmer, and more peaceful...one listener at a time. --Denise Sheppard

    Album Description

The Austin-based drone-pop quartet the AMERICAN ANALOG SET evolved from the ashes of Dallas' ELECTRIC COMPANY in 1994. 'Set Free' is the album that the band has been waiting a decade to make and with no time restrictions, no label, no money, and many miles between the members of the band, AmAnSet made it all happen exactly as they wanted it to. It is their strongest, most surprising work to date as it marks the culmination of many years playing together and growing as musicians and as a band. 'Set Free' completes this story with 12 songs about getting over something that never goes away.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars I Love Reliability.......2006-07-13

The Austin-based drone-pop group American Analog Set are probably the most consistent band in pop music. Over the course of the last decade or so, they have released 6 LP's of really quite similar music. While some may dismiss this as a lack of versatility, I believe it is really quite remarkable, and a testimony to the talent of this band. Constantly re-inventing oneself (Radiohead) takes guts, talent, and fortitude, yes. But the opposite side of the coin is just as difficult. To continue making records so similar, yet unique, must be a phenomenally difficult thing. Granted, this isn't exactly the most challenging music in the world to create. But to have so many tracks released, and still sounding somewhat fresh, I must applaud their effort.

Set Free, if it must be said based on the above paragraph, is classic AmAnSet. This band is some of the best laid-back party music I've ever heard. Its also fantastic for early morning drives to work when everything seems to be moving too fast. AmAnSet has the unique ability to somewhat slow down time. I find it quite difficult to be up-tight or panicked about anything with AAS playing in the background. Life just moves to a slower beat, and one to which I like walking. The production is solid, if unassuming, and the instrumentals play their parts well to a tee, which one could expect after a decade of making this music. Tracks to surely check out are "Cool Kids Keep" and "She's Half."

5 out of 5 stars My first American Analog set cd.......2006-07-06

I actually heard about this band through Amazon. I was looking at some Death Cab For Cutie, and it said The American Analog set was something I should listen to. I was kind of skeptical when I first heard because I wasn't quite sure what I would think of it. The American Analog Set reminds me of Sigur Ros in the fact that both bands are great to sit down and relax too. They have a steady drum pattern through all the songs. Andrew Kenny's voice is nice and soothing and is great to listen to any time of the day, regardless of what move you are in. The guitars aren't turned up super loud, but the melodies and notes that are used calms you. The point of this music is to relax and feel it. Personally, I listen to these guys all the time when I am driving. It seems to make the time go by faster. If you like any kind of music that relaxes or soothes you, buy this and every other American Analog set cd. It will be worth it.

2 out of 5 stars want to like it but cant and this is why.......2006-06-09

amanset has been one of the more dependable indie outfits over the past decade, achieving maximum results from their strictly minimal approach to composition and production. but as much as i wanted to like this album, and ive given it repeated listenings over the past six months, it just doesnt do it for me. sure, it sounds pleasant enough playing low in the background, but as soon as i start paying attention the flaws become overbearing.

previous efforts had more variance in song structure, with interesting drumwork and hypnotic basslines that provided the energy needed to not just carry the melody along, but sink it deep into your consciousness. once you get beneath the very shallow surface layer of keys and guitar, which doesnt take long, this new collection leaves much to be desired in the creativity dept.. maintaining the same tempo over most of the album, strumming what sounds like the same few notes and chords in a slightly different order, accompanied by rather unengaging drums that serve a merely metronomic purpose. rather than feeling energized, im drained. the few promising moments, such as the immaculate heart suite, have that initial hook but then never really take off and go anywhere, in contrast with tracks (and sequences of tracks) on earlier releases which often build to an unforgettable climax. on promise of love, for example, you can actually feel the desperate anticipation of waiting for julie to come home.. the only anxious longing i felt here was for each song to be over. the absolute worst tracks are cool kids keep and shes half which suffer from an annoying repetition of the title throughout the entire song.

if youre new to amanset, id recommend the golden band first, then know by heart.. the same elements represented poorly here are performed to astonishing perfection on those two albums.

5 out of 5 stars Alas, all good things come to an end.......2006-05-16

I've been a fan of AAS since their first record, and one of the criticisms that's haunted them is that they make the same record over and over. This is not quite true, but Andrew Kenny & co. make such gorgeous music that I for one wouldn't mind if they'd keep making the same record forever. This is apparently not to be, and this is supposedly the last recording they're planning to make after over 10 years as a band.

Whatever the critics say, I can put just about any AAS disc on for nearly any crowd and still get the same positive reaction - despite their unusual and distinct sound, they're easy to "get" right away, which makes it more surprising that they're not more popular.

The basis of their sound is that chugging, percussive strumming and close-miked drums, whispering vocals and keyboards. It's something like a really laid-back Sweet Jane Velvet Underground sound, with the emphasis on hypnotic repetition and drone with an overlay of gorgeous melodies that draw you in - like some weird hybrid stoner pop easy listening music (?). It's quiet but intense, and dark without ever becoming gloomy - the rhythms are always too propulsive for that.

So where does Set Free rank in their output? I'd say it's a half-step below their amazing last two records, Know By Heart (my favorite) and Promise of Love - which is to say that it's better than 99% of the stuff out there. I don't think you could go wrong with any of their records, but Know By Heart is probably the most accessible place to start. Set Free or Promise of Love would be a tie for second place - chances are you'll end up buying a bunch of them once you've heard one.

3 out of 5 stars Less Filling, Tastes Great.......2006-03-10

This is the first disc of this band that I have heard, and am suitably impressed. Good songwriting, nice vocals, and a warm well-engineered sound. I would agree with another reviewer's comparison to The Feelies, who themselves are sort-of descended from the Velvet Underground (Doug Yule era-think What Goes On). AAS seems to inject a little more melody into the mix, and a little less irony. Which, nowadays, is a good thing. Set Free has me definitely interested in digging a little deeper into the AAS catalog.

If Danny Elfman the film composer seems ever farther from Elfman the former cult rock icon, his work on director Ang Lee's adaptation of the Marvel Comics legend suggests he may be reinventing himself yet again. While he seems to have largely abandoned his melodic interests somewhere south of Sleepy Hollow, the diverse concerns--ranging from bright, propulsive rhythms and repetitive wind phrases through ethnic modalities of (deliberately) undetermined origin and delicate pastoral touches--suggest a textural mindset more akin to Herrmann, but informed by the incandescent, hypnotic cadences and sonorities of Steve Reich and other post-modernists. While he occasionally lapses into the overbearing tribal drum sturm und drang that may have made some listeners of his overwrought Planet of the Apes score yearn for an umbrella, they are at least leavened here by slashing horns and Middle Eastern vocal flourishes. Subtle electronic sound washes ebb and flow throughout, serving up a percolating tension the composer gleefully punctuates with blasts of brass and thunderous percussion. This isn't your mother's--or Lou Ferrigno's--Hulk, and Elfman has done a fine job of musically propelling the big green fella into the 21st century. Also features the Guns N' Roses-meets-Stone Temple Pilots line-up of Weiland, Slash, Duff McKagen, Matt Sorum, and Dave Kushner performing the angular riff-rock of "Set Me Free." --Jerry McCulley

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The Elf-man Becomes The Hulk.......2007-02-21

Danny Elfman has been the musical voice of many superheroes. While this is neither "Batman" nor "Spider-man", "Hulk" does have some interesting moments in the middle of that Oriental style that most composers want to use in their music these days.
I'm kind of upset that there is no discernible theme for "Hulk", execpt for a six-note motif that is heard all over the CD. There is the music for Bruce Banner and his father, mostly played by, I think, the duduk. Then there is Natacha Atlas who does the odious moaning on this CD. Thank God Elfman isn't at all influenced by the Oriental music style because he uses electronics and percussion to maintain the right balance between the artistic and the classic Hollywood compositions. The action music heard in 'Hulk Out', 'Hounds Of Hell', and 'The Lake Battle' is fantastic and very propulsive, good Elfman compositions. The rock song 'Set Me Free' is the last track of the CD, and deservedly so because it feels like out of context with all the rest of the album.
But not all the Middle-East influence is bad, and neither is Natacha Atlas. Because there is the track called 'Captured', which is the best musical cue of the CD. I don't know why, but when I first heard it in the movie theater, I sorta started dancing to it. It's too cool. I really love that theme, and when I got the CD and listened to it for the first time, I turned up the speakers because it's such a fine piece of music.
"Hulk" is a good composition by Danny Elfman, but I'd say 'Captured' is the real deal on this album, and if you don't like rock, then skip the last track.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting eclectic mix of non-traditional Elfman music.......2005-02-21

Yes, there is alot of percussion which is a staple of Elfman, but in writing the music for a their super-hero franchise, Elfman breaks new ground. Rather than the dark flourishes of Batman & the high flying theme of Spider-Man, The Hulk is a dark score filled witth exotic sounds that actually capture the filmakers vision and provide an interesting listening experience for the listener. I gave this score 3 stars not because its bad, but because its not to my personal taste, and I would not necessarily recommend it. However, if you a collector of Danny Elfman music or super-hero scores, then feel no guilt when you purchase this unique score.

5 out of 5 stars Elfman did it again.......2004-08-20

I Have To admit The soundtrack is alot better than the movie. It is good to listen to. This might be one of his lighter superhero soundtrack scores i heard compare to batman, batman returns & batman Forever. hey the big green guy shouldn't get left out. One thing is to bad they did put the original theme in it like they did for spider-man. that woul of made a great eddition. Set me free was a good song. the only lyeric song in it. so you can't say it's really elfman's cd. Nice work Elfman keep it up. Hope he does one for the sequal.

4 out of 5 stars Great Music that Leaves You Begging for More.......2004-08-16

My only problem with the Hulk score is that there doesn't seem to be enough of it. That isn't Danny Elfman's fault, but the movie didn't leave a great many opportunities for him to flesh out the score. That said, what's here is amazing.

The main theme is suprising. One would expect something loud and clamoring with brass for a character like the Hulk, and while the music does get that way at times, the Hulk's melody is actually a steady, soft melody that resonates with wonder. It almost feels like what you'd hear when looking at DNA, molecules, and whatever else would need to be involved in the Hulk's origin. In the background there is a low, appropriately grand brass.

The score uses this theme to different heights throughout, along with fast-paced drums and occasional synth instruments. The most memorable tune outside of the main theme is a Middle Eastern choral section in the second half of the score, emoting the desolation of a solitary creature like the Hulk (and used for the desert backdrop seen in the movie.)

The finale varies the theme, making it granduer, because in it's simple 12 notes, a score for a movie about science fiction makes it seem like a score for a movie about magic. It peaks curiosity, majesty, and even innocence, and then turns into the backdrop for what the movie entails as a climactic battle.

Danny Elfman has been given a large responsibility among composers. He's had to tackle the objective of composing unique themes for three different well-loved super-heroes: Batman, Spider-man, and now the Incredible Hulk. And because he is such an excellent composer, the Hulk can join these other fine scores, and I can only hope Elfman is brought back for the sequel.

3 out of 5 stars Not Elfman's best, but a solid score nonetheless.......2003-10-10

Seemingly abandoning his more melodic tones for a heavier orchestral vibe, Danny Elfman has churned out another solid film score with The Hulk. Elfman's score was one of the few bright spots of the film; fusing sounds which are very similar to some of his past works with some Middle Eastern-ish tones and electronical blips to create something that isn't very memorable, but enjoyable nonetheless. Elfman's past few scores have either been solid or disappointing; I like his Hulk score more than I did his scores for Spider-Man and Planet of the Apes, but not as much as Sleepy Hollow or Nightmare Before Christmas. The final track on this disc is a song called "Set Me Free" which is performed by Stone Temple Pilots vocalist Scott Weiland and old members of Guns 'N Roses. That track is a nice little extra thrown on the disc, but Elfman's score is the main highlight.

Acappella is an excellent starting point for anyone looking to explore contemporary Christian vocal groups. Less jazzy than Take 6 and more lean and clean than the heavily multitracked Glad, Acappella provides a solid groove and tight harmonies that are fresh and exciting yet not overtly aimed at Top 40 radio. One of the tracks on Set Me Free, "More Precious Than Gold," was even used in a national television commercial for Kodak. That track, based on Psalm 19, was written by Keith Lancaster, as was the bulk of the album. The four singers on this 1993 album, Duane Adams, Wayburn Dean, Gary Moyers, and George Pendergrass, are supplemented by a gospel choir on the title track. "Stand on the Rock" will get your fingers snapping and "Lead Me to Rest" will transport you straight to heaven. --David Horiuchi

4 out of 5 stars A loving tribute to a father from his son.......2005-03-25

It has always been Andrej Szpilman's dream to have his father's songs published in the western world. As the executive producer of this cd, he has fulfilled that dream. Some of his father's songs recorded for the cd were composed during his times in the Warsaw Ghetto in 1941. Wendy Lands lovingly sings these songs with a beautiful heart-wrenching voice.

2 out of 5 stars Hunt down the originals.......2005-01-20

happened to be living in Poland at the time of the release of Polanski's film 'The Pianist', and Polish Radio issued a commemorative boxed-set of archive recordings of Szpilman as pianist and composer. Unfortunately, this set does not seem to have been released outside Poland (though some of the piano tracks have been issued separately by Sony). One of the discs is devoted to some 25 of Szpilman's 'Piosenki' (chansons, popular songs) in archive recordings from the 50s, 60, and 70s of (predominantly) the composer's own arrangements - typically for sumptious dance orchestra or big band, and featuring some of Poland's most popular singers (unknown of course in 'The West').

Only when one hears these songs with their original Polish texts (whether one understands them or not), harmonised, arranged and sung in a style that bears the authenticity of their own time, can one appreciate the (no doubt well-intentioned) folly and inadequacy of this Wendy Lands collection. These new English texts are not translations, so the words have been artificially grafted onto a melody that has been crafted to set and convey text with quite another meaning. Of course the quality of Szpilman's material ensures that the new songs based on his melodies are perfectly respectable as atmospheric bluesy-jazzy numbers, but I can't help wishing that some executive had had the courage to release an album of the songs in their original language and colours... They are incomparably more atmospheric, haunting, charming, melancholy and elegant than the 'versions' presented on this new disc. Any lover of Edith Piaf or Jaques Brel, for example, would fall for them immediately - the inpenetrability of the language only adds to their charm, and is far more meaningful than the second-rate doggerel shoe-horned to the melodies here. I hope these Polish recordings will become generally available soon - if not, you'll have to make friends with a Pole, get a cheap flight to Warsaw, or petition Polish Radio! It really is worth it - the old recordings are charming and heartbreaking.

    1 out of 5 stars Huge Disappointment.......2004-02-27

After enjoying the autobiography and the movie, my family's expectations for this recording of Szpilman's songs were extremely high. From all angles, these hopes were crushed. The songs were probably - after their composition - given their first performance in a nightclub and that later exposure over Polish radio would hve retained the European night club feeling. The arrangements were far off the mark , both in their choice of instrumentation and in their composition. As for Miss Land, her voice is better described as "dreary" and "monotonous" rather than 'dark" and "smoky" as some have described it. To put it blunt.ly, she has no "voice" only breathy sighs.

I suggest that Andrzej Szpilman, Wladyslav' son, have another go at this project. During my Foreign Service career I have spent many months in Warsaw 1960-1962 and many hours at the Congresova and other night clubs. It shouldn't be too hard to persuade some Polish musicians to cooperate in a project to re-create Wladyslav's songs imbued with their original charm and spirit.

Finally, I wonder if the English lyrics followed the original Polish or were completely different.

5 out of 5 stars Who is this woman!?!.......2003-06-17

What a beautiful voice, what sensitive, expressive delivery. I bought this album on a whim and I am blown away by the whole ensenble of fine musicians - but especially by Wendy Lands. The recording quality is clean and crisp, the songs evocative, intelligent, and melodic.
The last album that similarly impressed me was Norah Jones.
Then to realize that these melodies were written by Wladislaw Szpilman (the subject of Roman Polaski's "The Pianist") just adds to the wonderment of this beautiful album.
    Please, more Wendy Lands! Bravo!!!

    5 out of 5 stars Truly Sublime!.......2003-06-15

I was suprised to learn that Wladyslaw Szpilman wrote contemporary songs. I was aware that he wrote compositions, but it never entered my mind that he wrote such beautiful songs that are on this CD. After seeing "The Pianist" and reading Spzilman's book and then seeing the DVD with an added documentary on the making of "The Pianist", my curiosity was piqued. Andrej Spzilman, the son of Wladyslaw, long dreamt of introducing his father's songs to the west and he chose Wendy Lands to sing these hauntingly beautiful songs. Upon purchasing this CD, I was hesitant that I might find them too much in the vein of 'Easy Listening'. I am glad to say that was not the case. I played it three times and should Wendy Lands continue to sing the songs of Wladyslaw Spzilman, I would be grateful. This is a very beautiful album and I cannot recommend it highly enough. Wladyslaw Spzilman did not merely survive the most grim conditions of The Holocaust, he thrived through his love of music and this album is proof of what a genius he was. I look forward to a second CD of his songs sung by Ms. Lands. Her heartrending interpretations draw the listener in. This is a truly sublime album!

I wasn't impressed the first couple of times I heard this, but I think the third time was the charm. I always liked the sound of Tammy Trent's music, and this is an example.

My favorite tracks are "My Irreplaceable", "I Do Believe", "If You Need Love", "Trusting You" (Wow! A songwriter who can write using the "g" at the end of a verb, as opposed to "Trustin' You"!), "Light Of Love", and "He's Right There".

5 out of 5 stars Tammy Trent is Amazing!!.......2001-11-14

Tammy Trent's album, "Set You Free", will have you moving with the beat! A Christian pop CD with a positive attitude. Tammy Trent has such a great voice with a wide range and sings all of the songs, including background vocals (except for sometimes Michael Mellett). All of the songs have terrific rythm, nice synthesizer and guitar, GREAT drums, and lyrics which are so good. Here's a list of my favorite songs and some of the words from the songs:

    *My Irreplaceable*
"~You're every song I sing, My all, my everything,
    my irreplaceable~"

    *I Do Believe*
"~I belong to Jesus, That's who I am,
With all of my heart I believe~"

    *If You Need Love*
"~You know you can call on God above, If you need love~"

    *Everybody Move With It*
"~If you've been set free, you know you are free indeed so,
come along with me, everybody move with it~"

    *Your Love Pursues*
    "~Lord, I love that your love pursues~"

A great CD to add to your music collection, don't miss Tammy Trent's "Set You Free"! It's awsome!

    5 out of 5 stars Amazingly Awesome.......2001-05-02

This CD is one of the most incredible albums I have heard. Tammy has way to communicate her deepest beliefs in an awesome blend of beats and music, ranging from fast to slow, that draws you in. I recommend this to everyone!

5 out of 5 stars Enter Tammy Trent - Exit Britney Spears.......2000-12-18

Tammy Trent's new cd "Set You Free" is one of my all time favorites. I can't wait for more! Her music has awesome beats just like some of my other favorite pop artists (Britney Spears & Christina Aguilera) only Tammy's music has a better message because she sings about the Lord. Her music has made me rethink some of my priorities in life with songs like "Without You" and "Light Of Love". If you like great pop music but you're sick and tired of the old message, like I am, then I think you should consider purchasing this cd...my mom even loves it! Tammy Trent's music will help "Set You Free"! ....I love that titled! It perfectly discribes this cd! Tons of fun!

5 out of 5 stars Tammy Trent Is "Irreplaceable".......2000-12-17

She may not be 15 years old, but her music and her voice could fool anyone. When I first heard "My Irreplaceable" on the radio, I thought, "Wow, who is that?". I just got the album and let me tell you, it is one of the best cd's I've ever heard. Not only do all of the songs have great beats, but the lyrics are so moving. When I first heard the song "Without You" it touched me so much that I cried. I couldn't believe how much it sounded like my life. I feel that I would be so lost without God. When I lose Him it takes a while and then I find my way back and I break down and realize how much I've missed God. When that happens I feel that He is so far way and He comes back just for me, even though He is always beside me. Thank you Tammy for reminding me that I can't live Without the Lord. Tammy's music makes you feel comfortable and closer to the Lord. Her new cd has really help me in my walk with Jesus daily. Songs full of hope and life...her message never compromises and her music always jams. I would totally recommend this cd to anyone who loves great pop music...from 8 years old to 88 years old. There's no age barrier because this cd is fun, yet lyrically very mature. No bubble gum here....just Tammy Trent doin' her thing and doin' it well!

5 out of 5 stars Superb Jigs and Reels! Exceptional Bodhran!.......2003-01-23

Failte! Nomos is a young group like Danu, but unlike Danu, they are generally unknown outside of Ireland. Their enthusiasm for traditional Irish music is obvious. "Set You Free" is about not paying the price forever and perhaps the British occupation of Ireland. Bean Dubh an Ghleanna is an old Gaelic song I am accustomed to hearing in pubs. Put a lad with a good voice in front of a pub audience with this song about that dark lass from the Glen and a sprig of Hawthorne on his lapel for the Tuatha De Danann and Leprachans, and you have the only method to quiet down a pub." Frank Torpey provides a bodhran backup to this peice, something I find uniquely good. Frank's playing through the fast paced reels and jigs is exceptionally good. He has a fast triplet style on the front of the drum while altering the pitch on the backside of the drumhead. My only complaint is the group falling back on snare drums. Just give Frank a bunch of tea and Guinness and keep the bodhran going. The biggest bazouki ( deep voiced Octave Mandolin) I have ever seen in my life belongs to this group. It isn't how big your bouzouki is that counts, its how you use it. This seems to be a popular and escalating thing with groups since Altan showed up on stage with a huge Bouzouki. There is very credible bouzouki, fiddle and concertina playing on this album. A concertina to most people looks like a primitive Sailor's instrument. However, it is played fast with tapping style on double and triple notes that counts. NOT easy at all. My wish list starts with the band staying together, doing more albums, getting a lot more U.S. exposure and selling their snare drums to a rock group. Oh yes, no electrical appliances also, such as an electric bass guitar. I suppose it is a matter of US versus Irish taste, but there is too much talent here to play over with rock and roll additions. Ceol de Erin go bragh!

    5 out of 5 stars Definitly a must have.......2000-04-06

Nomos displays a unique array of talents in their recordings, with collaborations from many artists specializing in certain instruments. While their performances are certainly much more rousing than their recordings, the music is the same. It evokes a spirit of ancient rituals and modern faith. Their album is a necessary addition to any music-lover's collection.

    4 out of 5 stars solid record.......1998-10-20

I have to admit that I don't enjoy this cd as much as their debut for the following reason: after seeing them perform live it is readily apparant that the recording mix levels on "Set You Free" don't allow Nomos to shine as brightly as they can. Everything is sort of buried in the mix together and this is unfortunate given the fact that they are such wonerful musicians. That criticism aside, though, this is a record that I have recommended to others. Perhaps, on their third effort we'll get a solo by Vince, eh?

4 out of 5 stars Nomos now up with the big boys.......1998-06-17

One of the newer wave of Irish folk groups, Nomos is an exciting quintet based in the city of Cork. While their first album, "I Won't Be Afraid Anymore", was impressive, I was inclined to think that lead-singer John Spillane's powerful, slightly husky voice did not always blend well with the very fast and precise instrumental style of fellow group members.

Come the second album, I'm willing to bury such complaints forever. This is a beautifully integrated effort, with the undoubted talents of all members being given rein. Niall Vallely on concertina and Vince Milne on fiddle form the melodic heart of the group, with rhythm coming from Gerry McKee's bouzouki, Frank Torpey's bodhran and John Spillane's bass.

But when Spillane is given his head, his melodic and sometimes haunting songs form a wonderful counterpoint to the full-on traditional instrumentals. I would go so far as to mention Spillane in the same breath as Christy Moore. There is a similar intensity and thoughtfulness to his approach, and he's also unmistakably Irish.

The title track is an infectious, life-affirming song about forgiveness, while "When You and I Were True" is a more equivocal love song. On top of such sung treasures, it should be stressed that this group has virtuosic instrumental skills. "Set You Free" moves Nomos up among the headliners of today's Irish groups.

    Album Description

The whole thing is assembled with such freshness, skill and expressive validity that it's hard to resist." - CD Review

3 out of 5 stars One hit wonder.......2007-07-24

After listening to Walz of Joy, I bought this album hoping to find more good music.
I only found 2 or 3 ok tracks but very far from the quality of the first track.

5 out of 5 stars This is her best........2004-06-26

Many of Constance Demby's CDs contain music having a common mood. Set Free offers a wide variey of sounds all of which are wonderful. This is definitely her best music.

5 out of 5 stars Breadth of Expression.......2003-09-29

For all that I listen to a lot of music which is listed as new age, I have to confess that I have no clue what that really is. A great deal of bubblegum and elevator music masquerades itself under the new age label. Most of this quickly reveals its vapid side. And what I want when I listen to this genre is hardly vapid. The best generalization I can make is that New Age music can be recognized by a tendency to use pretentious titles. Otherwise, it is all over the map.

I tend to do make my own definitions here. Many instrumentalists fall unter the heading of light Jazz - perhaps a bit more melodic that standard jazz fare. At the other extreme is what I think of as 'space music.' Weird sounds drawn out over time that emulates the movement of stellar bodies - slow and stately. Some of the latter is not particularly easy to listen to, and some is quite accessible.

Constance Demby is a musician who has manages to straddle the two extremes without a blink of discomfort. While she made her name with Novus Magnificat, the album - Set Free - is more typical of her overall styles. The first set of cuts are highly listenable works, often bordering on song styling. Some of the works, like I Set Myself Free are every bit as good as any popular music of the time.

The last four pieces are developments from her more serious side - all are classifiable as space music, and the proceed from easy listening to several works (especially Mother of the World) that will take some effort on the part of the listener. I have remarked elsewhere that this isn't my favorite kind of music, but Demby, who has real compositional skills makes them interesting and unusual.

Demby displays not only compositional skill, but superb performance values as well. Pretentious titles aside, this is all worth listening to. Normally, I recommend Novus Magnificat to folks who are interested in this genre. But Set Free's overall accessibility makes it another possible taking off point.

5 out of 5 stars The most important new age recording...EVER !.......2003-05-10

I'm a huge aficionado of contemorary instrumental music even though it seems there is so little of it that I feel really speaks to me. The music of SET FREE speaks to me, and in a very, very big way. Of all the 1000's of CD's I have listened to, this one ranks NUMBER ONE. Constance Demby is definitely one of the best of this genre, although I feel that most of her career has unfortunately been spent on music that is too...um...ambient for me.

This CD demonstrates the sheer virtuosity Demby is capable of performing if she ever chose to make her music just a little more mainstream. The CD ends with several of those "ambient" tracks that I was referring to, (which are terrific if you like that kind of music) but what I would otherwise say is to let the first seven or eight tracks stand on their own. This is the closest I've ever heard synthesizer music sounding so classical and timeless in style. This CD is a magical, spiritual masterpiece!

5 out of 5 stars Divine Music of the Spheres.......2002-10-18

I listened to Set Free for the first time in complete darkness after midnight on a Friday night. When the C.D. was over, I could not physically move--I was pinned to the floor and my spirit seemed to be in communion with "All That Is."
