About the Artist
A listening to the music from Anne Marie David is an experience with honesty, intimacy, and peace. In a live recording session for the original song "Love Lights the World," she and collaborator Sara Hunter brought together the renowned children's chorus PALS from Boston to help her deliver a poignant message through an emotional and stunning melody. Anne Marie's voice brings one home, which is what this native from Minnesota knows best. In her solo piano CD, "The First Morning," (recorded in 2000) she shares herself and her profound love for family through a series of improvisational vignettes which bring her soul to bear. In her music you'll hear compassion, an empathy and understanding that comes from just being still and listening. In her liner notes she refers to one of her pieces as "one of those moments when the piano started a conversation with me, and so we spoke."

A graduate of the Berklee College of Music where she studied piano performance and songwriting, her affinity to strong melodies comes in part from the musical traditions she learned in church. Drawing from hymns, old American folk tunes, and a Celtic flavor, she intertwines these influences into an original sound undeniably rooted in love. A collection of some well-loved hymns, her popular debut recording "Prayer of St. Francis" uniquely expressed a common gratitude for these melodies, her homage to prayer and music.

Through her music label which she co-founded, Arrhae Press Music, Anne Marie has emerged as an artist dedicated to creating and sharing her music. As an educator, she has taught music and music ministry to children and adults. In addition to her adjunct faculty position at Boston College in music liturgy, she also leads workshops on the discovery and sharing of songs from various traditions. On her journey, ever discovering, she continues to write and sing songs of peace, love, and home.

The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26

I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

I agree with Mr Hazelwood. This recording is lack luster and I usually like Michael Murray's recording. Too much brass and no organ. I agree that Columbia (Sony) should re-release the E. Power Biggs Music or Organ Brass and Percussion. That is the best recording and the correct mixture of instrments I have heard in a long time. I recently sent them (Columbia) an e-mail making that request. Maybe if they get enough e-mails, they would know that we demand the best of the best.

Where's the Organ?.......2006-02-19

What a big disappointment! How can so many exciting pieces of music be made to sound so dull? Someone should take a torch to Mr. Murray's organ bench; pehaps then there would be some fire to his performance. The Richard Strauss processional has been a longtime favorite of mine, but this lackluster pressing is beyong decent! Please, Columbia, re-release the E. Power Biggs recording of many of the same selections ruinrd on yhis CD!

It's hard to fathom the restraint of some of the prior reviewers' praise of this CD. As you would expect from any Telarc "fully digital" recording, the overall sonic impact is gratifyingly dynamic, and the performances are impeccable. Moreover, many supremely masterful composers are included-several of whom you might otherwise never encounter. At this price, buying this highly enjoyable CD is a no-brainer.

Don't miss this.......2001-07-31

"The Freedom Trilogy" is worth the price of the album -- an interweaving of Gregorian Chant and complex, exciting Gospel -- beautifully performed. One of the most exquisite things I have heard in a long time. Paul Halley was the organist at the Cathedral of St John the Divine in New York City when the Paul Winter Consort was in residence. You can hear him play that fabulous instrument in "Missa Gaia" and the wonderful recording of the celebration of the Winter Solstice. I think after that Halley went out on his own to do the kind of thing you find here. A good story and wonderful music.

Stunning, but one annoying flaw.......2006-03-17

The singing is flawless and deeply moving.

But why does track 13 - Ubi Caritas - insist on starting AFTER the music has already begun. When approached from number 12, it works fine. But to cue the thing (which is why I bought this CD), you have to BACK UP to hear the song from the beginning.

I thought it was just my CD or my player - but NO, the flaw is on this web page too.

Still, this is a treasured CD.

Beautiful Tribute.......2005-08-06

This album from one of the world's greatest organists, John Scott, is one of the most beautiful musical tributes to those who lost their lives in 9/11. The Nunc Dimittis is one of the most haunting versons of this traditional prayer ever written.

A lovely instrumental CD.......2007-01-10

I enjoy this CD, the music is very peaceful and uplifting. Since the songs are played solely by the piano there are no lyrics - this makes the CD great background music while reading or writing.
