I first must say I have not heard this album - but I have heard his music in concert and have rarely heard contemporary classical music so clearly stated and yet so experimental as Albright's. His work was interesting and challenging, yet completely successful on an emotional level. If you are among the few lovers of music who are open-minded enough to not merely try but enjoy serious modern music, you will do well to listen to this man's work. Sadly, his music is not as contemporary as I could wish, since he died in 1998. I've enjoyed a lot of avant garde, but have never been so moved as I was hearing his.

Joe Lovano's sonic explorations with the trio format on Flights of Fancy continue where 1998's Trio Fascination (which featured drummer Elvin Jones and bassist Dave Holland) left off. On Flights, Lovano both expands the trio concept by featuring four different three-way groups (each with varying stylistic persuasions) and even pushes the experimental envelope further by overlapping some of the trios on three selections. While the boppish title track (with bassist Cameron Brown and drummer Idris Muhammad) affirms Lovano's love for unabashed swing, the spellbinding "On April" (with pianist Kenny Werner and harmonica player Toots Thielemans) and the protean "Amsterdam" (with trumpeter Dave Douglas and bassist Mark Dresser) provide some of the album's most bewitching moments--and they're just the first three tracks. Lovano's big burly tone and bluesy sensibilities emerge when he's joined by fellow saxophonist Billy Drewes and drummer Joey Baron on the Ornette-ish "Off and Runnin'," and on the intriguingly soft-hued reading of John Coltrane's "Giant Steps" where he and Thielemans sound as if they're playing melodic chess. Once again, Lovano has released an album that brims with creativity, drive, and emotional poignancy. --John Murph

Misstep.......2001-08-15

No question that Lovano is a major contemporary figure, he's earned that through a series of marvelous records. This is a major disappointment though, nothing at all like the superb Trio Fascination Vol. 1. The problem lies in the conception - the various ensembles deny the CD any focus whatsoever, the number of tracks with each group means that there is no room [time] for a good exploration of the best parts, and the personnel choices are not ideal. One would expect Lovano and Dave Douglas to combust, but they play past each other, Billy Drewes is as thin-sounding and meaningless as usual, and Joe himself plays drums on several tracks, in order to provide the proper instrumentation within the guidelines of a trio, and Joe is simply not good at it. Skip it, especially if you're a fan.

Joe Lovano doesnt put out any junk. This is a straight ahead jazz CD with good contributions from the collaborating musicians. I dont, like the reviewer below, find any of the tracks to be weak. It is for people who dont like commercial sounding jazz. If you like Kenny G stay away. If you like music that carries on the expressive traditions of Miles and Trane this may be your cup of tea.

Nearly everything that Joe Lovano is involved in is amazing, creative, and always manifests an integrity that stays with the listener for a long time. Most of the tracks on this album follow this same wonderful pattern.

I am not an authority on the technical aspects nor the history of the harmonica, but Toots, while obviously a great musician, was quite frankly miscast on this album. The tracks with Toots could be better heard as duo fascinations.

A Lovano/Douglas collaboration has been much anticipated and does not fail to deliver. Judging by the uncertainty heard on the melodies, it seems that this was one of the first and perhaps only times they had played together.

Of particular delight was the astounding improvement in Lovano's alto tone. The whine in the upper register has been replaced by warmth and roundness of sound.

Lots of fun........1998-09-18

Although the album consists entirely of contemporary works, none of it is especially inaccessible, and indeed, the title work is totally accessible, and a great deal of fun to listen to. Some movements of that work even answer the musical question, "What if Dirk Flentrop had built a theatre organ?" (The answer: it would sound absolutely delightful!) The other works on the CD ("Chasm," "Undertones" and "Nightsong and Ostinato Dances") are also quite good, though they might take a bit longer to get into (but are well worth the effort).
