5 out of 5 stars Unbelievable Songs Combined with Incredible Vocals.......2007-01-31

I usually don't bother with music reviews, but these girls are worth the trouble. I figured I should do something to ensure they get another album out. I have a soft spot for female vocalists and well-written songs. This album is outstanding from start to finish. The songs are really unique - folksy, mellow stuff without any cliches, and almost put you in a trance. The harmony of their voices is remarkable. Their singing is on-par with Tori Amos, Sarah McLachlan, Shawn Colvin and Sheryl Crow. I would love to see them sing live.

5 out of 5 stars Harmonics.......2005-12-19

I loved this CD from start to finish. My fingers never even itched to hit the forward button, not for a second. I love the harmonics they employ, weaving in and out of each other beautifully.
'The Space Song' was my instant favorite. I had heard 'Save Me' before, though not the version on this CD. That's not a complaint exactly. While not the same song I had heard on "Roswell," it does have its own beauty in the bridge that I can't get out of my head.
'Patience' is a song I find myself humming when I haven't listened to the CD in days.
Catchy is not the word I'd use for this group and that's what sets them apart from song continously played on the radio, where the songs get stuck in your head in the most annoying ways. Haunting is better. A song comes to mind and you smile. It's a shame more people have not heard of The Pierces. I like having this little secret but I'd rather have them be a part of common consciousness.
Absolutely perfect for any mood.

4 out of 5 stars High Lights.......2005-09-07

The Pierces are two sisters who make pretty, accessible and well crafted pop music with an emphasis on gorgeous harmonizing. Critics, of course, won't like The Pierces because their music is neither dark nor pretensious nor deliberately obscure and unintelligible. I like to be challenged by music as much as the next person, but there are also times I simply want something to sing along to in the car without having to work too hard. This is what good pop music should do and Light Of The Moon fits the bill nicely.

Thrilling opener 'Space Song' boasts a fantastic hook and a lovely, swelling chorus and makes a very good first impression. 'A Way To Us' is catchy upbeat pop that would no doubt appeal to fans of Michelle Branch. Other songs take a more Fleetwood Mac approach - beautifully crafted, with lingering melodies and the sisters harmonizing to the fore, and it's on these songs that The Pierces really strike gold. In fact, if I were Mick Fleetwood, Stevie Nicks & co. I'd be asking the Pierce sisters to do a little songwriting on the side because tunes like 'Louisa', 'You're Right' and 'I Don't Mind' are miles better than anything on the Mac's last studio album.

Much more than just pretty faces, The Pierces possess musical talent in abundance, and if gorgeous melodies are your thing then the remarkably consistent Light Of The Moon will provide you with an album full of them.

Highlights: 'Space Song', 'Louisa', 'I Don't Mind'

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Harmony.......2005-02-27

Their first album was fantastic and this one is better!! From beginning to end great harmonies and smooth upbeat sound.
"give it all back" is the best. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful!.......2005-01-31

This album is incredible! It far outshines their self-titled debut. The songs are ethereal and the harmonies stunning. If you like folksy pop music, please listen to this! You wont be disappointed.

        5 out of 5 stars Tribute.......2007-06-06

Cantalope is a fairly new recording company brought to us by the creators of Bang on a Can. I recently played in the Bang on a Can marathon in NYC and got to see the piece "men" performed. I did not know anything about the piece when I saw it, and it kind of put me to sleep (I was really tired). The ensemble plays the same chords over and over while a movie plays in the background. The movie consists of old black and white clips of NYC. It felt like I was watching someone else's memories. The day after I saw the piece, I learned that it is a tribute to those who died in the WTC incident. After learning that, the piece made a lot more sense to me and I think I will enjoy it more in the future (especially when I've had more sleep.) I do know this cd is enhanced so that you can put it in your computer and watch the movie with the piece. (As of yet, I do not know anything about the other pieces, but I am sure they are just as interesting.)

                Album Description

This concept album contains eleven original rock, funk and blues songs with a pop music leaning. The theme throughout the CD is the journey through depression, anger, and pain. The guitar work is a muscular fusion of rock, bebop, blues and country, the vocals are smooth, the lyrics are cathartic, and the band's improvised interplay is raw, fierce, energetic and sophisticated. Imagine, if you will, the band "Cream" fed through a matrix of "Elvis Costello" songs with hints of Texas blues rock and echoes of "Hendrix", all influenced by the last 20 years of pop music. It's something like that.

                Customer Reviews:

                5 out of 5 stars A genuine talent.......2002-12-20

It amazes me that CDs by a musician like Todd Royce are not readily available and promoted in the mainstream marketplace, while CDs by any number of vapid and insignificant rock bands and pop divas can be heard on FM radio any minute of any day of any week, and purchased seemingly anywhere on the planet. Sometimes I'm surprised not to see J-Lo and Mariah Carry doing a strip tease in my refrigerator when I go for a bit of cheddar cheese.

"Step Into the Light" is a debut CD from a hugely talented guitarist who is also a wonderful songwriter and singer. He and the band can really, really slam it with maturity AND unbridled energy, and they prove it beyond a shadow of doubt on this disc. His songs remind me of Cream, and somewhat of Big Head Todd (coincidentally), and there's a strong taste of jazz, too. The lyrics deal with the human psyche and, more characteristic of songs in rock, blues, and pop, relationships. But Royce's songs tend to be more about his relationship to the world, life, death, personal growth, and his own life choices. The songs are a comfort to anyone who has struggled with that stuff. (Who hasn't?). Written mostly in the first person, you can sing or yell along as if you wrote the words yourself. For my money this is a great album for anybody looking for some deeply felt and thoughtful songs, but is also quite a gem for fans of serious, serious, and unusually strong guitar playing.

I guess my only criticism would be that most of the songs on the CD come in at four minutes or so. Because I've seen Todd Royce Band live there are spots on the CD where I would really like to hear them take off for a good three or four minute solo. The CD is utterly worth hearing and buying.

5 out of 5 stars You will play this one over and over again!.......2002-02-23

I'm not a musical connoisseur by any stretch nor do I give much focus to the lyrics of a song. I simply like to listen to the music. The "Great CD" test for me is whether or not I can listen to it over and over again, and this is certainly the case with Step into the Light. And the fact that I keep the disk in my car is a real testimate that this is gooood listenin'

5 out of 5 stars Royce Stepped Into The Light.......2002-01-29

At last, something original to listen to! The music is surely a bluesy rock pop, but with some strange turns at some even stranger intersections. I found the music derivitive of many sources, but not overly of anyone. Ultimately it maintains its own identity and that is a good thing. Todd Royce is his own entity and his guitar (and the two excellent musicians aiding him) speak rich and textured volumes. The songs are musically sound and yet not pop enough to absorb them all with one listen. This is smart music that requires intelligent listening. Do yourself a favor and pretend that the lyrics did not come with the CD. It is ultimately more rewarding listening when , like the words of Michael Stipe, the lyrics are music in their own right to be discovered on their own terms. Unlike Stipe, you can actually understand what Royce is singing and saying. I'm not a huge fan of the "concept" album, but Royce can be forgiven because he stays true to himself and the personal truth of his message. It's a gut wrenching delivery seasoned with a hopeful spirit. A journey most of us know all to well. We all need to step into the light sooner or later. By the end of the CD, the songs do not end. As the last note fades, it requires us to inquire of ourselves as to what ours or Royce's next journey will be. Todd Royce has stepped into the spotlight with this CD. I hope he receives the attention and accolades due him so he may continue his musical odyssey. It will take me some time to digest this CD, but I already know I would like to hear more. You will too.

5 out of 5 stars Out of the blue.......2002-01-15

This CD surprised the hell out of me. It's "Disraeli Gears" for the new millenium. I can't stop listening to it. Hits me where I live.

                5 out of 5 stars I love this disc.......2002-01-15

I don't normally buy a CD where I don't know that much about the band, but when a friend of mine went on and on about how awesome the Todd Royce Band was, I checked it out on the website...and noticed a couple things. The lead singer was kinda cute and he was very down to earth with his description of how this disc came about. Anyway, I bought the CD and ever since I got it, it has been in permanent rotation in my CD player. This CD is among my favorites like REM, Smashing Pumpkins, and U2. I can't wait to see him live. It must be intense!
