Album Description
Big Business is bigger and better than ever, with better hair, bigger hits, and the kind of overwhelming Norman Schwarzkopf-style force that rolls like thunder, stings like a missile, and--above all--takes no shit. On Here Come the Waterworks, their second full-length, bassist/vocalist Jared Warren and drummer Coady Willis (both of whom also happen to be the newest members of underground super-legends the Melvins) unfurl all the mammoth riffs, furious vocals and blazing drum work you've come to expect--nay, DEMAND--from LA's answer to Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday. No, wait... make that Sonny Crockett and Rico Tubbs. Either way, there's a new sheriff in town--two of 'em, actually.
Customer Reviews:
Hits the spot.......2007-05-20
I know a lot of online reviews accuse this band of not being terribly original, but the fact is that this album is refreshing.
This record clocks in at 40 minutes, the perfect length for an album if you ask me. It doesn't drag on and there's no song that's weak enough to tempt you to hit the "skip" button on your cd player.
The obvious comparison to the Melvins has been done and I disagree with most of the other bands people compare to Big Business. I'll chip in on this one and say that Big Business reminds me of godheadsilo minus the robotic facade.
Great band, great album....really refreshing listen.
Hear The Other Side Of The New Melvins . . ........2007-05-03
simply put, AWESOME !!!! and if you have a chance, pick up as well the latest Melvins' release "(A) Senile Animal" with the guys from this band fused with Buzz and Dale to create one of the finest Melvins' masterpieces in years !!!
by the way, this album WILL NOT disappoint either, especially if you dig
the new Melvins release. keep rockin' the Pacific Northwest Jared and Coady !!!
Excellent duo!.......2007-04-09
'Here Come the Waterworks' blew me away, with it's thick bass, sparatic drumming, and deep vocals. Big business create a sound of their own, however you catch familiar influences throughout the cd. Imagine a heavier version of the who/sabbath mixed with some atmospheric pink floyd in some areas. Really it's hard to compare to any other specific band, but anyone who enjoys thick proggy, bass-driven music will enjoy this journey. My only complaint is that, once it grows on you, you find yourself wanting just a little more than 8 tracks. It's really nice to hear a band that brings back alot of what heavy, classic rock/ metal are all about.
More than just Rock N Roll.......2007-03-19
Big Business' new full length comes off as a new take on the music that inspired this record. It sounds like the best elements of an unknown independent music scene showing influences instead of copycats. To begin first and foremost the bass and drums stand out like you wouldn't beleive. The opening track begins with a forceful drumbeat and bass sound that makes you want to continue listening. Production on this is fantastic! Every instrument stands out on it's own, which is something that most bands now as of lately can't seem to understand. I wouldn't say the songs are catchy, but they do have an element about them where upon second listen, you'll definetly remember hearing it the first time around. I'm not familiar with this band's first album but I heard so much rave about this album that I felt like I had to hear this for myself and I'm glad I did. So overall, great songs, great production, great musicianship, great album. So far in my top 5 for 2007.
check this out..........2007-03-10
Are you into crushing displays of intense metal riffage supported by substantial amounts of pure drumming insanity, then you should pick this up. Jared Warren and Coady Willis are rewritng the book of intense, purposeful thrash metal. Think if The Melvins and Motorhead had a baby (then these guys would be their own parents. Weird, huh?). Just buy it.

Surprisingly comforting.......2005-05-03
As a long time TOB fan I have to say I am greatly disappointed in the length...just about the time I am really digging the album it fades away, but what an album. Dave and the guys have really outdone themselves. My favorite song is 'Sunshower;' it is lyrically one of the saddest but musically most delightful songs I have dome across in years.
They are still BIG!!!.......2005-03-25
I have been an Ocean Blue fan since their first album "The Ocean Blue" and I was more than happy to find out that they had a new cd,the "Waterworks" EP.What can I say about it? After a first listen, a feeling of "walking on air" was all over me, which means their music lifted me up.That is how I feel when I listen to "Waterworks".Thank you OCEAN BLUE, you are at your BEST!!!
Ocean Blue is back in form.......2005-03-15
After not being too impressed with their first indie album, "DJL"...I was happy to hear that The Ocean Blue is back into good form using all the cool and dreamy guitar effects that we are used to hearing from their albums like Cerulean and Beneath the Rhythm and Sound.
Not a lot of people seem to like the instrumental, but I am pretty keen to it. I tend to like those short and ambient album intros that many artist insert into their albums. I heard in an interview that Dave learned how to use a recording program called, "Reason" and that track was basically him playing around and learning how to use it. He also claimed that he hadn't done much with synthesizers...although it does seem that he uses them on quite a few of his songs.
Pedestrian: My second favorite track after "Ticket to Wyoming" This song is pretty cool. I like the way the song outros rather than the beginning. I wish the entire song could have been as cool as the end of the song.
Golden Gate: This song is the only reason I didn't give this album 5 stars. I wasn't totally impressed with it...it does remind you the so-cal sound, but it is rather boring. I have seen them support this album a couple times and they are yet to play this track.
Ticket to Wyoming: ONe of the catchiest choruses ever on an Ocean Blue album. One good indicator of this song is that my wife likes it and she is not a fan of all the Ocean Blue's music. I like the use of the sweeping strings during the chorus. Oed Ronne's voice is obviously underused on the albums. He has an awesome voice! I like the line at the end of the song about "Wedding gown"...Ronne hits a good note with singing those words, bravo!
Sunshower: One of the surprises on this album. Another gem on this album that fits in perfectly with Ocean Blue's sound. My only criticism is that Oed Ronne sings this very much like Dave, so I wonder why he has to sing it at all? You might as well try to differ the sound a little bit. The organ pounding during the bridge of the song was great.
Northern Jetstream: Wow, what a cool song. Yes, it does seem that they are experimenting with some cool sampling equipment, but that is what makes new albums cool. Bands seem to be at their best when they throw new toys into the mix and they definitely did a good job with the new equipment. This is one of the rare Ocean Blue songs that you could blast in your car and just let it take you over. The whistles and bleeps of this song are very cool...it is a different type of sound than you are used to with Ocean Blue, but it also doesn't stray from what they are good at. I enjoy this song immensely!
If you are into down-tempo coolness and the So-Cal factor, this is the album for you! I love this band and I am eagerly awaiting their next album! Rock on!
Superb retro-modern pop.......2005-02-13
This EP is simply fantastic and has me eager for their full release (sometime 2005). As a long time fan of TOB, I've enjoyed their distinct hallmark for well-crafted melodies. The harmonies and melodies are reminscent of 1960's "California" pop tunes. The guitar playing and music composition is the best that I've heard on any TOB album. It appears that Oed Ronne has really stepped up as a significant vocal talent for the group and takes the lead on two tunes, including Ticket to Wyoming. Ticket to Wyoming is a great song about getting away and starting over. The 60's retro pop sound/atmosphere (but still modern) coupled w/ Ronne's fabulous vocals makes me wonder why this song doesn't get any radio play. I highly recommend this EP to all TOB fans and those interested in becoming one. Listen to the music samples and I guarantee you'll be hooked.
A new depth for the Ocean Blue.......2005-01-28
I have been a big TOB fan since their Sublime hit in the early 90's. This latest release shows the band moving into a more late 60's paisley pop sound.
1. Fast Forward Reverse - A unnecessary 1:36 sec instrumental intro. Lush with strings, this sounds like a movie filler music. Why was this added to an EP ? Pleasant sounding enough tho.
2. Pedestrian - My favorite song off this cd. A mid-tempo dance track (think New Order, Electronic) with jaggly guitars and a nice rhythmn arrangement. Lead Vocalist David Schelzel is in fine vocal form here. I think he is got one of the best voices in alternative pop. Add to this a sunny California 60's power pop chorus , you end up with a commercially viable single release from this band.
I love this song, worth purchasing the cd for.
3. Golden Gate - The cd takes an unexpected turn in sound with this 60's retro number reminiscent of Simon and Garfunkel/Polyphonic Spree/Scott Mckenzie-Are you going to San Francisco. David Schelzel harmonizes nicely with Orange Peels frontman Allen Clapp. A psychadelic trip down a California road complete with xylophone and David's favorite words La la La La.
Probably would be a good song to listen to if I was high.
THAT'S THE END OF THE DAVID SCHELZEL SONGS. OH NO !
Next up TOB sometimes lead vocalist Oed Ronne
4. Ticket to Wyoming - Plesant guitar pop but nothing outstanding vocally. I buy cd's for a particular vocalist...I really didnt want to hear Oed Ronne too. More Schelzel please. But this is one Oed's best TOB efforts since he joined the band in the late 90's.
5. Sunshower - Uptempo and fast jaggly pop reminiscent of the UK's Housemartins. I am liking this more with each listen.
6. The Northern Jetstream - An ambitious midtempo 7 minute plus folk/dance instrumental. Some doo doos thrown in. Someone just got a new synthesizer for Christmas. This is filler music.
TOB is releasing a new full length cd in 2005. With David hanging out in Minneapolis with alot of power pop bands, this Hershey , PA band's next release should be intresting to hear.
Pick up this cd for Pedestrian. Probably for true TOB fans. Check out their last full cd Davey Jone's Locker as well - a guitar pop gem.

Customer Reviews:
Beautiful follow-up.......2005-10-20
Waterworks, the second release from Archetribe, is a 2 disc set that explores a musical voyage from the World Beat to ambient drones. The songs expand the sonic territory explored in their first album, Earthtones, for a powerful and passionate journey. The cultural melting pot of the first disc builds the listener up for a relaxing journey through disc 2. Not only are the songs written with expertise, but the sounds, mix and production are all outstanding. Sit back, clear your mind, put on your favorite headphones and be prepared for a journey through the oceans and rivers of your mind. Highly recommended!
Organic bliss..........2005-10-15
It's always a treat when an unexpected project comes basically out of nowhere and turns out to be really great. It's even better when there's a just-as-good followup to prove the first one wasn't a fluke. Enter Waterworks. This is another instrumental bunch of exotic world-beat textures to drown in, and though the overall sound is largely tribal/atmospheric (I hate such limiting labels), the range is wider and the overall experience is more multifaceted than before. There's still no shortage of alluringly hypnotic percussion - largely ethnic with more subtle electronic tones this time - and the ingredients range from guitar to flute, bass, violin, synth and sitar. If the last album was David Sylvian with a tribal edge, this one is Brian Eno inviting Loreena McKennitt, Peter Gabriel and Jon Hassell over for dinner, with Bill Laswell bringing dessert and Robert Fripp crashing the party (or at least lurking in the bushes). And athough I heartily recommend Archetribe to fans of any of the above, it still doesn't *sound* like any of them - which of course is as it should be.
Where the last album was always concise, the tracks on Waterworks get to nicely stretch out and breathe, whether it's for four minutes or seven or fifteen. We wander through much more territory with two CDs to spread out over: one tribal/rhythmic, one mainly ambient although it still has some percussion grooves. Disc 1 is great for the car or the office (especially with headphones - that aural detail! those textures!); disc 2 is perfect for reading or settling down to sleep or just taking a break from all the noise. Whether it's background, foreground, in-depth listening or ear candy on the surface, this stuff will reward whatever time & attention you give it. It's easy to get lost in all the sounds and grooves, but it's a good kind of lost. I usually don't want to come back.

dark, moody, and melancholy are words that come easily to the mind when listening to
w a t e r w o r k s debut album, dragonfly. dragonfly is thematically about feeling too much in a world filled with both loss and grace. the sounds owing as much to performance art and poetry as to jazz ... layer after layer of musical and verbal images lay down a fresh vocabulary of aural allegory.
Customer Reviews:
best CD in my collection.......2002-07-01
There's not much to say. Of all my albums, this is my favorite. This band has a sound like none other, and some of the most thoughtful lyrics I've heard. Buy it, relax to it, then think about it.
understated and underrated.......2001-02-27
Doran Stambaugh announces in an authorative whisper: "We start / as nymphs / in love / swimming our way / through the watery days" over an acoustic guitar figure, the slow ebb of Paul Bessenbacher's keys brooding beneath the surface and then mimicking the lyric's hovering dragonfly with tentative, darting runs. Such meticulous attention to detail and assured restraint raises Dragonfly, the album, way above the norm - this is a truly stunning record. Stambaugh's phrasing and control become essential ingredients in Waterworks' jazz-inflected soundscape, weaving in and around the rhythmic patterns layed down by drummer Jason Toth and bassist James Scott whose interplay appears telepathic in its construction. Although very much a collection of songs, often bleeding into one another, there are many standouts among the genuinely faultless selection. From the tragic demise of Therese Marie in Halfway ("Her blood beat the snowflakes to the ground"), eliciting Stambaugh's most impassioned performance, via the insistent twisted blues of Hard Look ("I'm a cold cup of coffee in the corner of the room / Going bitter by the minute / I need a warm-up soon"), to the skeletal lyrics of Memoirs in my Pen, ( "To all the years / We won't spend together here / Cheers / To the echoes we might hear in 20 years / Cheers / I'd like to raise my glass to the making of a remarkable past") delivered in a deliciously resigned tone - part irony, part regret, part respect - Dragonfly, too, is nothing less than remarkable.
Kick back and relax...with waterworks.......2001-01-04
What do you get when you add up skilled musicians, outstanding song writing and superb production? The answer is, of course, dragonfly. Kick back and relax and let waterworks take you on a mellow musical journey...
