About the Artist
‘Le Voyage du Temps’ is Allen Brunelle’s 1st electronic music/new age release under the pseudonym, Tempustry. Tempustry is a name Allen created from the Latin word for time, ‘tempus’, and the postfix, -try, meaning ‘the study of’. Allen has been studying time for more than 25 years performing. As a percussionist and drummer, Allen’s number one responsibility has been to ‘keep time’ and to be the rhythmic force behind bands of many genres. ‘Le Voyage du Temps’ marks the first time Allen has been able to share melodies that have been long trapped in his mind. Allen is also the drummer for celtic, world music rock band, TODESBONDEN. He previously drummed for progressive rock band, THE DARK AETHER PROJECT (DAP), and can be heard on 'The Gentle Art of Firewalking' CD. Prior to DAP, Allen toured internationally with Neo-Progressive band, ILUVATAR.

Product Description
‘Le Voyage du Temps’ has only one intent - to be an uplifting, relaxing, and peaceful listening experience. Liquid melodies set the ebb and flow of each composition. Orchestration, at times minimal and ambient, evolves and builds in positive reinforcement of monophonic synthesizer leads. All the while, an analog drum synthesizer and electronic percussion propel each song to its respective denouement. May Tempustry's music drift you away to a positive place.

Le Voyage du Temps,Tempustry,Time Voyage Music, LLC,New Age,Trancy and relaxing electronic music with beautiful liquid melodies, analog propulsion, and climactic synth solos.

5 out of 5 stars Essential for the chansom junkie. Buy It........2006-10-25

'Poulenc Melodies' performed by a really impressive lineup of vocal talent including Elly Ameling and Nicolai Gedda is exactly the kind of recording you need if you are compulsive about having 'complete' collections of things. This shows a range of composition which smaller releases such as single CD 'Voyage a Paris' (Hyperion, with Felicity Lott and Graham Johnson)can give us. For starters, many of these chansom showed a lot more evidence of more modern stylings and a far greater range of interpretation. In fact, I even had to check the lyrics in the included booklet to verify that on some songs, the performers were singing in French. Even though I have a smattering of knowledge of French, I would have sworn that the singers were performing songs in Russian.

I am happy that all four discs run for more than 60 minutes. No cheap short changing here. If you don't want to spring for the large set, the Hyperion release is great, but this is worth every penny.

4 out of 5 stars Almost completely wonderful.......2005-04-29

Its very considerable advantage lies in its completeness. Poulenc was one of the very greatest songwriters of any era. If you have no Poulenc songs in your collection, start here. The recommendation of Kruysen is a fine one, but only after you have heard this as a basis of comparison. Of Ameling, Senechal, Souzay, Gedda, and Parker, the only disappointment is Parker, who - I'll just say it - sings with his usual bleat. Souzay is a shade past it in vocal quality, but he still understands these songs as well as anybody, with great declamation (and that, after all, is what most of French singing is about). The dryness of the voice is nowhere close to disastrous, as it might have been in Italian opera. Indeed, it lends an air of life lived, without excuses. Gedda is okay. The standouts are Souzay, Ameling, and Senechal. Baldwin accompanies superbly.

5 out of 5 stars Indisputable Gallic flair.......2004-06-06

These performances are piquant and stylistically right on target. Even if Souzay is past his best here, he brings a lifetime of experience to bear and the other performers are wonderful. Ignore the curmudgeon who blasted this set. You will enjoy this tremendously if you love Poulenc.

4 out of 5 stars Idiomatic, fresh, cleanly recorded.......2001-05-12

This is a fine set. Dalton Baldwin accompanies each singer with clarity and zest. And who can resist the affectionate singing of the likes of Nicolai Gedda and Elly Ameling? The "melodies" themselves are magnificent--among Poulenc's finest creations. Whether you have other performances of these works or not, I think you'd be pleased with this beautifully recorded set. Certainly the 70's-vintage performances are more individual in profile, more "romantic," if you will, than those conjured by most of the "anonymous" singers of our own age. Recommended with enthusiasm.

2 out of 5 stars the best songs ever ruined by uneven performing.......2001-05-05

This is a warning for all Poulenc fans NOT to take the bargain route and purchase this immense collection -- you might think you're getting a great deal but: the singing and pianism is substandard and doesn't do the music justice (remotely). Songs like Bonne Journe'e or Ho^tel are all but ruined... Here's what to buy: Bernard Kruysen's CD of selected Poulenc masterpieces (favoring the Elouard settings)... nobody will ever come close to Kruysen in interpreting Poulenc. Avoid THIS CD. They still get 2 stars for (1) being encyclical and (2) delivering clear and even sound quality.

Legendary soprano Rosa Ponselle recalled these sessions taped by RCA in her Baltimore home as the only time she enjoyed making records. Fourteen years after her abrupt retirement from opera, her voluptuous instrument (ruby red in the '39 Victors and now tinged with purple) soars to better advantage in the amplitude of her spacious music room than within the cramped confines of the recording studio. Whether in Beethoven, Schubert, Debussy, Mozart, or Tosti songs, or chestnuts like "Drink To Me Only With Thine Eyes," the vocalism is always informed by Ponselle's musical intelligence and sense of style. Romophone brings together all the material from these home sessions, including 75 minutes of music not issued by RCA, plus a promotional interview that reveals a warm, down-to-earth persona quite different from your typical diva stereotype. Ponselle fans need no encouragement to acquire this set. --Dan Davis

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Revealing.......2004-12-28

It must be remembered when approaching these recordings that we are not hearing the Ponselle of the Met singing her great roles, we are hearing the Ponselle of retirement, and a long retirement. She seems to have left her career right at its height, and for whatever reasons. She was not idle, but was active in the world of opera in other ways (including working with many now famous singers when they were students: Sherryl Milnes, Beverly Sills just to name two). She approached her music with the vibrancy of her time, which is often at odds with how we would sing such things today (the Mozart aria for Cherubino for example). However, even though we hear a voice that has now started to show wear, not from oversinging, but rather from not being used all that often and from age, we are not listening to someone who has "lost it all." Everything that made her great is still there for us to enjoy and wish we could experience. Her range is no longer seamless as it was during her active singing career (a thing she was noted for), but her legato is a wonder to behold, as it was during her most active singing years. It is no wonder that singing teacher tell students to listen to her recordings to learn what legato is all about (and as a result, Ponselle is one of the most immitated singers in history, but at no time has anyone ever captured her sound, her quality, her depth of tone, her ring, her anything; people may try to immitate the essence of her singing by copying what they hear -- even the great Maria Callas' interpretations in La Vesta sound like haunting echos of Ponselle -- but what was the depth of her interpretations or of her voice no one has ever come close to matching). Her chest notes are raw at times, but they do not ruin the music in any way. Her top notes (which always put terror into her heart, but for the life of me, after listening to all her recordings available, I cannot figure out why -- even after reading her story of why the High C in Aida scared her so much --- her high notes were extremely secure, even a high D flat in the trovatore arias, no strain is evident at any time, not ever!), well, her top notes are at time frayed and not centered as they were. Still, once again, that is not a bother. It is evident that at times she has to "work rather noticeably" to produce her top notes, but there again, we are not offended by what we hear.

What we do experience, and mostly because we have no arias from her great roles to listen to, is the Ponselle way with a song. She just seemed to embrace a song and make it her own. Her interpretation may be enjoyable to you, you may find other singers you like better, but her interpretation is NEVER common and without validity. Each piece is truly her own stamped completely with her emotional and vocal understanding of the text and the music.

That brings me to the diction part of the recording. Her RRRRRR (rolled R, or tongue trill by some) is very pronounced and now days may be seen as tasteless. However, it was the way things were sung then, and not just in Italian (even English actors rolled their R's beyond belief at that time). Personally, the well pronouced rolled R has never bothered me whatever, and in a way, I expect to hear it when singers are singing opera. It is so played down now days, one is sometimes completely unaware an R was even said. Ponselle's diction is incredible, and I don't just say that. Each and every word is completely understandable, even in English (which is crystle clear). It seems that was a common trait back in her day, for in many recordings of that time and earlier that I have the singers are exceptionally clear with their diction (even the Met manager, former singer, Edward Johnson is so clear while singing English -- a collection of Canadian songs -- one is stunned that the poor recordings quality didn't just eat up the words). Perhaps such singers as Renee Flemming and all the other greats of today should play some Ponselle recordings and learn what diction is all about.

These recordings, though made long after her retirement, are still a great testiment as to what she was like as a singer, for they give us all the greatness that was hers. It makes people like me, who were born after she retired (though quite a while before she died, as I remember her well on live from the met broadcasts on the radio Saturday afternoons) wish we could go back in time and hear some real singing.

In addition to the music, we have some interviews with Ruby Mercer, which are a real delight to listen to. No wonder people like Sills have nothing but great memories working with Ponselle. She is truly well grounded. She knows her contribution to the world of music for exactly what it is. There is no false modesty, nor is there any "high mindedness about self." We have a very down to earth person talking about things, even why she chose some of the music she did, in a very down to earth way.

I recommend the set to anyone who loves to hear great singing, even if it would have more appeal to collectors than average people. It is well recorded, and the sound is excellent. It is a treasure to have on any record shelf.

5 out of 5 stars Villa Pace Recordings.......2003-05-15

This recording is a must for anyone who loves to hear art songs sung incredibly. Aside from Rosa Ponselle's voice being arguably one of the most beatiful, distictive, incredible sounding voices (so big that it was troublesome to record), the fact that she is also one of the greatest vocal artists in the world is also evident. Although most of the songs were recoreded when her voice wasn't as capable of stunning high high C's (there wasn't any Aida aria's on this one), her musicality, ability to act with her voice, and her use of language is breath-taking. Especially nice, is her french, it's so clear and clean, yet doesn't sound constricted or bothersome. The best track is the second lower version of "When I have sung my Songs". It is truly phenomenal, and her singing of this piece is a true testament to what this woman was capable of. Also her "o del mio amato ben" some of the most dramatically genuine singing I 've heard. Buy this CD if you want to hear some real singing and one of the greatest voices of the 20th century.

5 out of 5 stars A great singer is fading away.......2005-12-08

At about the same time that recording companies were profitably supporting a "rivalry" between Maria Callas and Renata Tebaldi, they were stirring up a similarly profitable competition between Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Gérard Souzay. Imagine it, once there was a time in which money could be made from singing lieder!

Souzay, was born as Gérard Marcel Tisserand in 1918. He attended the Paris Conservatoire from 1940 to1945. In 1944, while still a student, he made his professional debut and his first two recordings. He did a limited amount of operatic work, even essaying the role of Don Giovanni, but his true field of operation was song. His opera career is represented on CD by memorable performances of "Manon" (with Beverly Sills) and "Pèlleas et Mèlisaunde," but his recorded songs from 1944 to 1987 number about 750 in at least fifteen different languages. He died in 2004.

I first became aware of Souzay more than forty years ago when a singer-friend suggested I try him when I got weary of Fischer-Dieskau. At the time I wondered how anyone could tire of the great German baritone. Not very long after that, of course, I found that I could bear the sound of the excellent but ubiquitous and damnably too-familiar sound of DF-D no longer. Gérard Souzay was an instant curative. To this day, it is Souzay's voice I hear in my mind when I think of the lieder of Schumann and Schubert. In French art song, Souzay was simply without rival.

I find to my dismay that the memory of this great French performer is fading. Amazon still lists 45 of his titles on CD, but only 22 of them are still in print (or whatever the proper term should be for a recording.) As I write this, only 13 of the 45 titles have attracted Amazon reviews and, worse, only seven of his solo CDs have been reviewed. This is more than dismaying; it's downright ominous. The memory of a wonderful talent seems well on its way to oblivion, to the sad diminishment of us all.

In January 2000, an unnamed Amazon reviewer wrote this of Souzay, "In these performances he surpassed Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau in a number of respects -- sheer style, beauty and range of tone, naturalness, depth of expression". Yeah.

Five stars!

4 out of 5 stars A strong debut from TEMPUSTRY. Recommended for fans of early-80s Tangerine Dream........2007-02-05

Although it wears a group name, "TEMPUSTRY" is in fact a one-man project from keyboard wizard/percussionist Allen Brunelle (also known as a member of the progressive rock band Dark Aether Project.) As other reviewers have rightly pointed out, the music here is heavily influenced by the "Berlin school" of synthesizer artists. In fact, if you are a fan of the Johannes Schmoelling-era of Tangerine Dream (and in particular albums like "Exit" and "Thief"), then you should have a very basic idea of what to expect from the music of Tempustry. The synth sounds and production are certainly a bit more modern, but the TD traditions of rhythmic sequencers, complex percussion patterns, and snaking, sinewy melodies are well represented here...But don't worry, the TD influences intermingle with Burnelle's own distinctive musical nuances - a distintion that puts Tempustry a cut above many of the "retro" TD clones that have emerged in recent years. All of the pieces heard here are fully-instumental - so if, like me, you don't like vocals with your electronic music, you can rest assured that there will be NO unwanted onslaughts of the "wordless" operatic vocals & chanting that have plauged many other recent releases in this genre. (Oy vey! Amethystium could be one of the greats of electronic music if they'd just tie a gag on every opera singer within a ten mile radius of their recording sessions!...but I digress. : ) Most of Tempustry's tracks are in the 4 and 5 minute range, so please don't go in expecting any album-length epics. However the compositions are all well-arranged, and develop nicely within their compact timeframes....My only small criticism about this CD is that there is a bit of that "sameness" factor from track to track, particlarly in terms of the tempoes and the synth sounds which are used - but this is something which could be easily remedied with future releases (a new Tempustry album is due sometime this year!) Also, some may complain that this album is a bit short by modern standards, with a total running length of only 41 minutes. However, all things considered, I'd much rather have a short album that maintains my interest, than a long album that drags in spots - wouldn't you?...All in all, an this is an impressive debut from an artist I'd like to hear more from in the future (NOTE: Tempustry is set to perform at 2007's "Rites of Spring" Progressive Rock Festival, and have apparently added a second keyboardist for live shows)

5 out of 5 stars Review by Aural Innovations.......2005-12-24

Tempustry - "Le Voyage Du Temps"
      (Time Voyage Music 2005, TVM007)

From Aural Innovations #32 (November 2005)

Tempustry is Allen Brunelle's solo project apart from his occasional duties as drummer for Architectural Metaphor and Dark Aether Project, and though the music on Le Voyage du Temps has some affinities with the former, most of the songs veer far closer to Jean-Michel Jarre/Michael Garrison territory. With a penchant for symphonic bombast and an obsession with portamento-drenched monophonic synth leads, much of Le Voyage plays out like clockwork, with ultra clean production, sparkling textures, and nouveu romantic aspirations of cosmic grandeur. Pieces like "Space Race," "Spindrift," and "Skyward," while nicely programmed and artfully structured, simply recapitulate the conventional synth wizard magic invoked by numerous Schulze apprentices (including Jarre himself, to some degree) since the late 70s. To Brunelle's credit, his use of drum machines adds a much needed rhythmic element to what has become a nearly homogenized plug-in genre of music. The aptly titled "Driven," for instance, propels the listener across the mechanized autobahn of early Kraftwerk, with a nod to the digital highways explored by such 90s speedfreaks as 808 State, Orbital and Eat Static. For connoisseurs of electronica and similar synth-based genres, Le Voyage has the cardinal virtue of doing it all right - and pretty much right by the book when it comes to post-Schulze space music design. Which is to say, if you like the past masters and grand gurus of kosmische musik, you'll like Tempustry's Le Voyage du Temps.

5 out of 5 stars Electronic "thinking" music..........2005-07-14

The latest CD from Tempustry manages to be a throwback of sorts to the early pioneers of electronic music. This disc, while being pure electronic music (meaning no guitars, acoustic drums, vocals) is not going for the same market as electronic *dance* music- don't confuse the two. That's why I titled this review "thinking" music, because it is more intended for the audience more in tune with Larry Fast/Synergy, Tangerine Dream, and even a slight touch of Vangelis' more "Blade Runner" moments than the 150 BPM dance crowd. Don't expect to play this at a club and have the teeny-boppers fill the dance floor.

Given all that, this CD is full of complex drum programming (Roland's 808 is featured) and arrangements, enough so that it is clear the programming was intended to mimic the action from a live drummer. So why not just use a real drummer? Because the overall effect of the music would actually be diminished. Remember, the goal here is to have an electronic CD, not a band with featuring keyboards.

Several of the tracks sound like they would fit in the mold of John Carpenter's post-Halloween films, especially Escape From New York (say what you want about the movie, but the music sets a mood that Tempustry aims for and achieves too.) Aside- Blondie used the main theme from "Escape" on a recent tour as walk-on music, and I was not the only one in the audience to recognize the song and comment how cool it is to hear it.

One thing missing from Le Voyage du Temps is the lack of loops so prevalent in much of today's electronic music. But again, because this is not a dance CD, the arrangements have more coherency to them and do not need to start a groove that gets old after two minutes or so. In fact, my only minor complaint is that some of the tracks could actually be longer, but maybe that is a good thing since they don't stay around long enough to wear out their welcome. Perhaps we'll see a Tempustry "dance mix collection" somewhere down the road? Until then, enjoy this disc.
