AHHH, Delightful...Gift Yourself With This CD!!!.......2007-03-19

I know, I know, I am a huge supporter of Colette's work, but with good reason - she is wonderful. This CD is just amazing (I am tired of that word, but am at a loss for a better one). Her voice is so clear and pure...it just lifts my heart to hear her sing. Singing is not one of the gifts I got this time around...in my next life I am going to have to remember to ask to be able to sing beautifully.

Each of the songs have a crystal beauty of their own that makes them unique and haunting. They will stay with you and you will catch yourself playing the Cds over and over again. I have left Colette's CDs in my car palyer and my husband is always taking my car so he can listen to her!

This record is wonderful; simply Jessye Norman. What else can I say: loved it!

Favorite Soprano: Gorgeous Dramatic Voice.......2006-11-05

The first time I ever heard Jessye Norman sing was a recording of Dich Teure Halle from Wagner's Tannhauser, and I was immediately enchanted. She has a gorgeous ringing tone and powerful voice. However, she can also bring her voice to a delicate sweetness that other dramatic sopranos find difficult. This album is put together particularly well. I love her Carmen and Isolde here, but I cannot stop listening to the other songs either, the non-operatic ones included. This my favorite CD, and I would definitely reccomend it to anyone considering the purchase.

The American soprano Jessye Norman was born in Augusta, Georgia (the segregated South) on September 15, 1945 in a family of amateur musicians; her mother a pianist, her father a singer in a local choir.

Norman received a scholarship to Howard University (a historically black university in Washington, D.C.) -NOT INDIANA-, graduating in 1967 with a degree in music. The following year, she won the ARD International Music Competition in Munich. She made her operatic debut in 1969 as Elisabeth in Richard Wagner's Tannhäuser at the Berlin State Opera, and in subsequent years performed with various German and Italian opera companies. She returned to the US to make her professional concert debut at Lincoln Center in 1973.

Amazing Voice.......2005-07-06

Jessye Norman has possibly the greatest voice I have ever heard. Being a bass/baritone, I usually shy away from higher voices (especially tenors), but I find this soprano to be flooring. For being a classicaly trained vocalist (she attended Indiana University) Ms. Norman has an incredibly versatile voice. In this album alone, she sings broad French arias, light Mozart, spirituals, and Broadway. Each is done superbly. Out of every track, her rendition of "Ave Maria" is my favorite. She sings it so tenderly and intimately, it is like she is singing it directly in front of you. You will be moved, certainly.

I suggest this CD to everyone, a fan of classical music or not. It is important for everyone to have these songs to relax, calm down, or to just listen to. You would not regret it.

lovely sounds for lovely people. pleasant and warming: friendly electric music that is good for listening to in many different situations. if you like music, especially electric music, try this. if you like the postal service or any band that sounds like the postal service, try this (unless you find vocal-free music horrible, because there are no words in any of these songs). if you like beeping, you'll like this album because there are some fine beeps. Good job Proud Robot!

The Thinking Person's Electronica.......2005-01-12

Tired of most of the current bunch of tedious knob twiddlers collectively known as electronica? Then try I AM ROBOT AND PROUD. Every track exudes either an inspired mellowness or a clever uplift drift. The tracks are so wonderfully produced that they have the ability to, at once, become the most exquisite background music or, when "viewed" through headphones, reveal their aural gems! A proud robot indeed.

Prozac for the soul.......2004-10-08

Electronica has become a recollection field for the maladjusted singer/songwriter. The one who used to sit with his acoustic guitar on his little chair and sing his broken songs about how misunderstood he is in this cold, shallow world. (Then he'd have a couple of beers with the cutest girls in the audience after the gig and be all happy again)

Artists like Khonnor and Cyann & Ben are devils in disguise. They have noticed that the singer/songwriter-cliché has gotten tiresome, and headed for alternative ways of expressing themselves. The key terms for the narcoleptic bedroom troubadour are no longer "acoustic guitar" and "wooden stool", but rather "Pro Tools" and "drum patterns". Many have tried to merge electronic aesthetics with folk influences in order to, I suppose, create "organic sounding" electronica. Why, I'll never understand. What you typically end up with is the worst of two worlds. A dull song is a dull song, no matter if you cloak it in epic sonic landscapes.

For I Am Robot And Proud to be lumped together with these dilettants has to be a gross insult. Shawn Han-Liem is not interested in providing the soundtrack for your lying passed out on the bed at 2 am with a wet towel against your aching head and a couple of fragrant incenses burning on the desktop. He'd rather make sprawling, bloopy music that evokes tender childhood memories like that old children's program you used to love, sliding down the helter-skelter or hanging upside down from monkey bars. Dropping standout tracks would be pointless - they all shimmer with the same bouncy, carefree bliss. Yet, for all its joyfulness, "Grace Days" constantly manages to stay clear of the overly happy-go-lucky, which makes it passable for repeated plays.

In days like these, when chilly autumn winds howl and darkness falls in the afternoon, "Grace Days" is like a Prozac prescription. Only slightly more addictive.

Why isn't this kid famous?.......2003-12-04

Grace Days is Toronto-based Shaw-Han Liem's full-length follow-up to his November 2001 debut album The Catch. His brainchild, I Am Robot And Proud creates hypnotic, winsome, indie electropop in the neighborhood of Boards of Canada, Mouse on Mars, Buffalo Daughter, Solvent, Plone and Yellow Magic Orchestra. As the name suggests, I Am Robot And Proud makes bloop-bloop music that layers mechanical rhythms with warm melodies through a combination of dusty old keyboards and electric pianos, bloopy computer samples, humming bass, and voices from both past and future.

Grace Days expands on the lilt,sparkle, and color of The Catch. The nine tracks on this album have even warmer, deeper melodies than I Am Robot and Proud's previous release, with the harmonies on Her Version evoking a future in which robots will not only have emotions, but will sing about them. The title-track opener marries acoustics and electronics so perfectly that you will marvel that they were ever separated. The abstract form of tracks like Friction On Teeth and Mexico City will draw you deeper into a trance until you can't imagine how you got along before this album.

Thomas Campion (1567-1620) was a poet as well as a musician, and his songs definately reflect this ability, for they could just as well be read as sung. Philip Rosseter ( his friend) states that his 118 songs were "superfluous blossomes of his deeper Studies," no doubt referring to his Latin poetry , or perhaps medicine, which was his profession. What Campion did better than Dowland, or any other English composer of the day, was to "couple my words and notes lovingly together, which will be much for him to doe that hath not power over both." It is best to listen to them in order of priority to poem, melody and lastly singer. His melodies are simplistic and unadorned by shocking harmony designed to overpower the weight of the word itself. T.S. Eliot was in no doubt about Campion's quality:"except for Shakespeare, the most accomplished master of rhymed lyric of his time."
The performance of these songs by Drew Minter (countertenor) accompanied by Paul O'Dette (lute) is really quite outstanding. I must say that this disc is so much better than Minter's other disc of lute songs "Sweeter Than Roses". His voice had a much clearer tone quality and he did not get 'nasal' or 'edgy' as he is prone to do. He kept his voice light and distinct with very neat diction. When he goes for a loud full sound like Michael Chance or David Daniels his voice is not pleasant to hear. But this album is very good and his emotional investment into each song was excellent. Just a very good LISTEN!!!!

Serious Drawback.......2006-04-08

Recorded in November 1989 at Bethel United Church of Christ, Manchester, Michigan.
Harmonia Mundi. Originally issued as HMU 907023, now re-issued as part of the budget-price Classical Express series as HMCX 3957023. Total time: 58’23”.

Thomas Campion was a contemporary of both Shakespeare and Dowland and was a medical doctor who wrote poetry which he also set to music. Drew Minter performs twenty-two of these here with his inimitable coppery countertenor, a voice which is, in fact, very beautiful, but needs considerable getting used to if you are new to it. (Minter sings at alto pitch, but nobody would mistake him for a female!) He is accompanied by master lutenist Paul O’Dette, whose contribution remains fairly quietly in the background. The songs themselves are, of course, in Elizabethan English, making them rather difficult to understand. And this is where this CD suffers a serious drawback: the texts are not printed in the thin CD booklet; instead, there is a note saying that they can be downloaded from the internet, but when I tried to visit the site mentioned (on more than one occasion recently), the server was down, the address unknown. I nevertheless enjoyed listening, but without really knowing what Minter was singing so delightfully about. Campion’s melodies sound to my ear a little “samish”, and I occasionally found myself wishing that the program had been interrupted by a lute solo or two.

Pleasant recital of Dowland contemporary.......2001-03-28

There is little overlap between this Campion CD and the similar recital featuring another American countertenor, Steven Rickards, on Naxos. However if forced to choose between the two note that the Naxos release includes sung texts, while this one from Classical Express does not. On the other hand O'Dette is a more characterful lute player.

I wept..........2005-06-18

"Brilliant Sky, Infinite Sky" is wonderful; so is "Love Scenes;" but I bought this recording for the last piece, called "Morningsongs." The performance is incredible; the baritone soloist is one of the best I've heard. The piece is so full of passion and sadness and beauty that you will never forget it. I particularly love the middle movement called "Blue Animals." Kernis - a brilliant composer! - uses the chamber ensemble to its fullest capabilities, melding instrumental colors with vocal sounds and syllables to create a full and rich, yet intimate, texture. I checked this recording out at a university library and after hearing it immediately bought my own copy.

The best ever version.......2002-06-07

The wonderful cast transports you to the realms of Gilbert and Sullivan, to make you feel that you are experiencing a first night in 1881! John Reed, as Bunthorne, an aesthetic poet is superb, camp, subversive and a complete fraud. If anyone is not aware, the story of the opera is based upon the idiosyncracies of the Aesthetic movement in England of the 1880's and Gilbert used the public parodies of his friend Oscar Wilde as his major source. The rest of the cast, chorus and orchestra , under the long experienced 'Goddie' are superlative and make for one of the finest line-ups in D'Oyly Carte history. Revel and enjoy, for this is quite the best.

The Golden Cast of D'Oyly Carte!.......1999-04-13

My wish had always been to see John Reed and the D'Oyly Carte Company in a performance of Patience. My mother had done so, remarking that, 'You'd need patience to watch it', she was coloured in her opinion, since she wanted to see 'The Mikado', but had gotten the wrong tickets! The recording, made in 1961, is superb in every detail. You are with the cast, on stage, in the auditorium, it is such a 'live' performance. The dialogue is delivered exquisitely, whilst the singing is uniformerly of the highest standard. I recently portrayed 'Bunthorne' and throughout my performances, I felt that I was continuing the legacy of Gilbert and Sullivan. All the past history of performers were there. I feel that Patience is a magical Savoy Opera. Do not miss the opportunity to own such a definitive performance. Maybe the subject of the 'Art Nouveau' periodof Victorian England is dated, but as one critic has already stated, every generation 'throws up' its poseures, to be knocked. 'Ah, me! lack aday!' BUY IT!

The Definitive Recording.......1998-12-09

For those who prefer the traditional Savoyard renderings of the G&S canon, this is far and away the best recording of this parody of the cult of celebrity. John Reed leads the cast as a delightful Bunthorne, and the recording contains all of the opera's dialogue. "HMS Pinafore," "The Mikado," and "The Pirates of Penzance" may be better known, but "Patience" is deserving of a wider audience.
