This disc is obviously aimed at the world-music audience, if one judges from its title and the subtitle, "Folk-Inspired Music for Guitar." But that shouldn't dissuade listeners interested in more serious music. Isbin has collected original pieces and arrangements from Spain, Latin America, Appalachia, Ireland, Israel, and Greece--all of them quite lovely. It's really amazing to hear, for example, the "Londonderry Air," better known as "Danny Boy," in such a sympathetic arrangement by the late Japanese composer Toru Takemitsu. She plays with such technical mastery that you wind up taking it for granted, while appreciating her songful delivery of this highly varied program of music, which was mostly first intended for the human voice. The uncommonly attractive booklet, including photos of Isbin as a world traveler, is another asset to this fine program, as is Teldec's realistic recorded sound. --Leslie Gerber

5 out of 5 stars "Dreams of a World": A Dialogue..........2005-03-28

I was introduced to Ms. Isbin's music this winter during a trip when a friend had "Dreams of a World" on for 3 days straight, dawn to dusk. Typically, after listening to the same CD twice, one gets bored or annoyed. Yet, this was not the case; on the contrary "Dreams of a World" warmed us up --it was delicately beautiful. Ms. Isbin employs an astonishing pallet of colors, which she blends with unprecedented technical mastery and imaginative nuances throughout her oeuvre.

Cancion y danza for guitar, Agua E Vinho Mahar and Yerushala'im shel zahav are pieces which can easily be overly sentimental and languorous. Ms. Isbin keeps a pleasant balance between the melancholy in her phrasing, the underlying dynamism of her voice
and the warm character of the pieces. I can only recommend Dreams of a World to anyone in search of high quality music played by an artist, not merely a technician.

5 out of 5 stars Dreams with raw emotions. .......2005-01-24

This is one of my all time favorite CD. When critics call Sharon Isbin the "Monet of the guitar" or the "preeminent guitarist of our time" they only begin do justice to her mastery of the instrument. On this CD my favorite pieces are Agua E Vinho, Cancíon y danza for guitar, Recuerdos de la Alhambra. They are superbly played; they are flawless, passionate ,very moving. I cannot help feeling transcend when listening to Dreams of a World. Ms. Isbin does more than play nice music from all over the world; in this CD she shares her heartfelt dreams of a world.

I highly recommend Dreams of a World.

5 out of 5 stars Still a dream ..........2004-12-26

This has long been my favorite classical guitar recording, and I just put it on again after hearing another recent favorite recording ("Reflections of Spain") played by David Russell, who is perhaps the most gifted contemporary guitarist on record. I was inspired to do so by Russell's performance of the "Cancion y Danza No. 1" by Antonio Ruiz-Pipo, which though quite excellent, I knew right away was quite different from Isbin's take on the same piece.

First, let me say, I hope that they are good friends, because they are both landmark musicians and worthy "competitors." Both clearly play with absolute love for both the music and the instrument. In short, I prefer Isbin's recording of the Pipo "Danza," even though, overall, Russell's playing is technically cleaner and more facile (but not by much). (Across his entire CD, I recall barely any string noise from Russell, where as Isbin manages a mere dozen or so clear such imperfections across her entire and ample CD; big deal).

I think the thing that draws me to Isbin in this piece (and her CD, in general) is her incredible variety of rhythm, attack, and tone color, all of which combine to give an impression of near perfect balance between spontaneity and precision. She has a way of taking time without the slightest sense of delay or heaviness. This is probably because her tempo never changes, only the rhythm around it, which is a classic hallmark of rhythmic mastery. This means that she hears and feels, both deeply and objectively, every moment of "sound and space" (notes and rest) from beginning to end, like an unbroken line painted across a master's canvas. Combined with this, she uses the space between her bridge and finger board to elicit the most amazing contrasts in tone color (one of the great contributions of Segovia to the art).

Russell plays with equal mastery of rhythm and attack, perhaps aided by the remarkable sonic depth built into his guitar. While he makes maximum use of that wonderful guitar sound, he is somewhat less dramatic in his changes of volume and tone color between phrases, aiming for a more consistent and lyrical quality, certainly another aim of mastery in itself, but there in lies the difference. Still, his sharp shaping of phrases, especially in his choice of Spanish music on his entire CD, with that impeccable technique behind it, weaves a spell all its own.

So, even though Russell's is among the finest pure Spanish musical CDs available, and one of my favorite in that genre (musical realm), I still have to give my nod to Isbin's multi-national effort for its unmatched ability to conjure, especially today, the most sublime dreams of a better world.

5 out of 5 stars An Elegant Journey Around The World.......2004-07-09

From the moment I put this CD on my player to the time the CD ended, I was transfixed. This CD is such a delight to the ears, that it is difficult to put into words the emotions experienced while listening. I attended a NY Philharmonic performance several weeks ago with guest soloist Sharon Isbin. Her live performance was mesmerizing. She did an encore performance of "Recuerdos de la Alhambra" which took my breath away. The NY Times reviewer called it a "...virtuoso encore...". How wonderful that this piece appears on Dreams of a World. A CD that will transport you around the world with the flavors of outstanding compositions interpreted by a musician who is one of the greatest living classical guitarists today. Do yourself a favor and experience the magic.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Superb.......2004-07-07

You don't have to be a classical music expert to love this CD. It is accessible to both the novice as well as the sophisticated listener.

Dreams of a World is the type of CD you come back to over and over again. Each listening reveals a new layer of complexity and mastery. To master an instrument requires a unique blend of disciplined technique and creative emotion. One may aspire to being a perfect technician and yet lack in emotive nuance. One may aspire to evoke emotion and yet lack proper technique. In either case the listener is left wanting. Isbin however, inspires by combining flawless technique with passionate creativity. For example, the works by Neomi Shemer shimmer. Isbin's technique, her emotion, and her versatility shine forth on this CD. This is a beautiful work, and should be in every music lovers collection.

5 out of 5 stars perfection.......2005-10-21

I've been listening to this album for a couple of years now and just recently it has been sitting on repeat over and over probably because of the mood I have been in.
This is one of the most honest and beautiful albums ever. Ever.
Each and every song has it's own beauty in it's own special way. It seems like even when I don't comepletly see what a song is getting it, I can still relate to the words in my own way.
There isn't any one single track I would claim to love more than any other because I really only listen to the whole cd at once. (though the album version of 'The Velocity of Saul at the Time of His Conversion' is kind of weak, I much prefer the one from Stars Too Small to Use but that hardly makes a difference).
If you're a fan of Neutral Milk Hotel, Murder by Death, or other such melancholy, instrument-laden, emotional, lo-fi, indie-folk bands, and you don't like this you should be beheaded, end of story

4 out of 5 stars the kind of great that creeps up on you slowly.......2005-03-22

okkervil river listens like reading someone's diary: embarassinly personal, full of all the things you never wanted found out, tearing away your pervious conceptions until you are almost sick from too much truth. will sheff's voice catches you off-guard, sometimes almost like a male chan marshall in it's tentitive quavering and at other moments worthy of a tennessee williams play in it's intensity. my personal favorites are "the war criminal rises and speaks" and "the velocity of saul at the time of his conversion." i don't see the point in comparing these guys to anything. if you do, they're bound to come up short for something like pretentions to uniqueness. okkervil river can stand alone.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent music.......2005-02-11

I don't remember how I was introduced to Okkervil River but I'm glad I found them. I guess they belong in the indie-folk/avant-folk/alt-country genre... whatever that means. All I know is the music is slow and smoothing. The voice and lyrics of Will Sheff is akin to the great Nick Cave. The clear single is "It Ends with a Fall," which I believe the budget music video is available on their website. A must-see.

The great thing about this album is the more you listen to it, the more the rest of the album become your favorite songs, meaning, there won't be just one or two standout tracks. The whole album will be one complete enjoyment.

4 out of 5 stars makes me think of the ocean on a foggy dawn.......2004-06-09

I must confess, it took me a few weeks to get into this album. I slowly waded into it - and waded is the right word, because this album, for me anyway, has a very distinct sea-influence, like the songs rose up from a foggy coastline - it's just thick with atmosphere, this album. The vocalist has a bit of a whiney sound sometime, but after repeated listen I really feel comfortable with his voice - he is passionate, and I prefer passion to stale vocals that don't take any risks. Acoustic guitar, mandolin, banjo, and organs abound - very nice instrumentation - the quicker tempo tracks are very very good - I love the last song with its mandolin flourishes and sing along ending - I think this album deserves to be heard - any Wilco or Decemberists fan would probably dig this sound - check it out! Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Best stomache ache you'll ever get.......2004-03-28

We all know amazon reviews are the most biased opinions you can get anywhere - every cd is apparently the best one in the world. I'd say in recent years there have been a lot of 4.5 star cd's out there, excellent, worth listening to for months straight, but not quite deadly. This cd is absolutely deadly.. i'm not much for the nu folk scene, and wilco isnt my cup of tea.. but theres somethign undeniable here. Buy this album. If you have a soul, it will thank you.

5 out of 5 stars Music Poetry Romance.......2007-03-08

Don't be put off by the negative comments judge for yourdelf as I did. I found this by accident looking for some romantic music for my lady and that is exactly what I found. Now I need to see the film. The music conjures up such a feeling, relax listen and enjoy. Imagine moonlight skys, the sea gently lapping along the shoreline, candlelit dinners with the one you love. This will leave you with a warm feeling and if not then you will not know romance. The poetry is warm sensitive and well read, a bonus to the CD.

4 out of 5 stars Il Postino (Le postier).......2007-02-01

Excellent album. En plus de la musique originale du film, plusieurs lectures de poëmes de Pablo Neruda par des acteurs et actrices de renom, sur fond musical.

5 out of 5 stars True Romantic Cd - www.michaelpalmer.net.......2006-12-18

If you are a true romantic, you will love this cd, even IF you are not a fan of some of the famous stars who read the poetry - I know I am not a fan of most of these actors, but it does not take away from the excellence of this soundtrack. If you like this cd, please look at the tv series Beauty and the Beast cd. It is called "Of Love and Hope". It is a must have cd.

4 out of 5 stars lovely!.......2006-09-07

The musical score is haunting without resorting to melancholy. It befits Pablo Neruda's timeless poems. Highly recommended, even if not all of the poetry readings are well executed.

1 out of 5 stars WHAT DID THEY DO?!.......2006-04-01

What is this trash?! This film is beautiful but the soundtrack sucks big time. They should have used the actor who was playing Pablo Neruda to read the poems in ITALIAN! It's a beautiful and romantic language but no..they screw it up with actors from the U.S. OMG! I HATE JULIA ROBERTS! she makes the soundtrack even worse. I spit on this cd! believe me..I would so give this trash 0 stars but amazon doesn't allow it!

5 out of 5 stars beauty sleep.......2007-05-30

This music is perfect for bed time.
Beautiful classic music that lulls you to sleep.

5 out of 5 stars Baroque Music: A Prelude To Sleep.......2004-05-30

This album is from the popular series "Set Your Life To Music"
series. The theme for this one is "Baroque For Beauty Sleep" which seems to be a companion to "Baroque For Bathtime". Baroque music, especially the slower movements in many concertos, are exquisite nocturnal pieces that ease the transition from being awake to falling asleep. The beautiful, elegant, slow, graceful music of many of these pieces will definately relax you and even help you fall asleep. It's therapeutic. There are so many reasons one can buy this album. It can help you relax and soothe you, as already mentioned, and it can be played in the background of a message therapy session. It can serve as music for a romantic evening or dinner. And lastly, it hits the spot after a long day and you're ready to visit the world of dreams.

Respighi's Ancient Airs and Dances, scored for lute and other Baroque period instruments, is the newest piece on the album. Respighi, a modern composer, was delving into neoclassic music and deliberately evoking the Baroque Era. It works wonderfully.
Naturally, no Baroque album is complete without Vivaldi's Four Seasons. Here is the Largo from "Winter" only it is played on panpipes by the New Age artist Zamfir. The sound is hauntingly beautiful. There is a sonata for flute and harp by Bach, the biggest name in the period and Vivaldi's "L'Estro Armonico" as well as Telemann's Suite in A for Recorder. One particular piece I enjoy and think you will too is the melodic and elegant Concerto Grosso No. 12 by Handel, the slow movement Larghetto E Piano. It is sheer tonal beauty. There is more concertos by Vivaldi, whose use of the flute is always very reflective and dreamy and even a solo aria from a motet of his, the soprano Elly Ameling sings "Nulla In Mundo Pax", a lyrical-coloratura showcase which crowns and concludes this gorgeous album.

5 out of 5 stars Baroque to Comfort and Sleep By.......2004-02-16

Baroque is such a wide and wonderful musical discovery for us modern types. It is soothing and quieting to the soul, and in this case for the body as well.

Whether used as lullaby inducing or just listening pleasure and relaxation, this is nice collection. Including wide array of instruments: strings, flute, panpipes, oboe, flute, harp, guitar, recorder, piano, and voice --- this is truly enjoyable.

There is wide array of baroque composers as well --- Rephighi, Vivaldi, Bach, Albinoini, Telemann, and more.

Great price, great variety, great addition to your CD collection.

4 out of 5 stars Guys! Don't be put-off by the cover art!.......2002-03-20

I commend the compilers for creating such a wonderful CD. The music is quite mellow, especially the pieces that are preformed by Zamfir, the famous panpipist. That whimsical woodwind gives a rustic, almost mythical feel the piece of music. You almost feel like you are in Arcadia awaiting a lecture by Chiron!

There is a good cross sampling of various Baroque pieces and Baroque artists. The variety is the spice that makes this CD worth buying and listening to over and over again. This CD also works well on shuffle, which remakes it into a brand new album.

There are a lot of oboes and string on this disc, and being a former oboist, I am electrified as I hear that instruments mellow honk!

Guys! Don't be put off by the cover-this is a good disc. Good for the mind, heart, and soul!

4 out of 5 stars Mellow, but not sleepy.......2002-02-02

I don't know how to sum this one up. It is mellow, but you can't meditate to it. It's more upbeat than I would normally prefer to sleep to, but it works all the same. The music is performed so beautifully that I almost want to stay up and listen.

This CD is also good for reading to, because it is easy on the ears but won't put you to sleep.

This four-CD celebration offers an incredibly comprehensive look at the Allman Brothers, adding early demos, rare live recordings, alternate takes, outtakes, remixes, and solo efforts to the already powerful "official" catalog. Their progression from '60s Invasion-style rockers to blues cover band with a taste for B.B. King to dynamic rock & roll juggernaut is astonishing, and the inclusion of sundry oddities will make collectors happy. The booklet is thorough and lovingly produced. --Marc Greilsamer

4 out of 5 stars birthday gift.......2007-07-13

I bought this for someone as a birthday gift. I ordered it at about 4pm one day and it was sitting on my doorstep the next morning at about 9:30am! Awesome service. And our friend loves the set.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best box sets ever made...........2007-07-01

This is a great box set, one of the best box set ever put out. It came out just before the Allmans got back together in 1989 (and have stayed together for the most part since). It has a lot of early stuff they did as the Allman Joys. There's a cover of Shapes of Things which sounds like The Archies, even though Gregg is singing lead. The album has all the great, important material, like the Filmore East versions of Whippin' Post and In Memory of Elizabeth Reed, Revival, Ramblin' Man, Blue Sky, Revival, Don't Want You No More, and It's Not My Cross to Bear. It has some great unreleased tracks (including a blistering live version of One Way Out, which is better than the version on Eat a Peach), a great cover of I'm Gonna Move to the Outskirts of Town, and Gregg's great solo hit I'm No Angel. It also has Gregg's solo cover of Midnight Rider, which is spookier than the original song. There is no really bad material here (and the 2 awful Arista albums, Reach for the Sky and Brothers of the Road, only have one song a piece here, which is good). It's got the classics, and it's got the best material from the vaults. It's a win-win for any Allman Brothers Band fan.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Purchase.......2007-01-20

I've been a fan of the Allman Brothers for 30 years. This was a great addition to my library of Classic Rock.

5 out of 5 stars box set insuperable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-09-15

4 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2006-08-25

Overall, this boxed set is very good. I'm not a huge fan of the Allman Brothers, but I have always liked their music. My husband has had this set for ages, and I'd had never heard the whole thing.
Some songs are not just by the Allman Brothers, but different members who had other projects before and after. It's a great way to be introduced to more of there music in one big package.
Worth buying!!

5 out of 5 stars another exellent release from the master.......2007-05-10

A Superb release from sir Ken , the opening track enough to have u placing an order. Also happens to hold one of my favourite all time tracks "insatiable" which is not just a clever name ,you will have this on repeat for sure.

4 out of 5 stars What A big heart!.......2006-02-09

I recommend this cd highly. I actually purchased it by mistake thinking I was buying the love coloured soul cd. I can say now I was quite pleased. Ken Has too many cd's for me to go back and purchase all of them. I am glad I stumbled on to this one.! I would have bought it just on the strength of A big Heart. That song touches my heart so much. It is trully a great smooth jazz selection. The flow of the music is real nice and it just shows how talented that Ken Navarro is. Watch him closely he is excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Guitarist.......1999-06-16

It is rare for me to like every song on a CD but I LOVE every song on this CD! Navarro is an amazing guitarist who has a knack for coming up with super melodic improvisations, especially on the acoustic guitar. I going to to pick up more of his CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent contemporary jazz guitar CD.......1999-05-12

This CD is what smooth jazz should be - energetic and strong and all 10 songs are winners. Great performances from Navarro and also Eric Marienthal on sax and Gary Grainger on bass. I also really liked "Smooth Sensation" but I think this one is a notch better.

This is one of my all-time favourites, and I can recommend this CD whole-heartedly!
Health Psychology has shown that Rhythmic Breathing Meditation has a beneficial effect on the vascular (bloodpressure) and immune systems. All the tracks on Velvet Dreams are eminently suitable for this use. I personally use the CD to maintain my own physical wellbeing, and the gentle integrity of its beauty soothes my Soul.

it took me sooooo long to find this cd, and i am soooooo glad that i finally did. i am a mellow type of kid who savors his time to relax and unwind. that is why i love kobialka. he understands exactly how i feel, and is able to slow down my mind to a pace that is no longer concerned with the stresses of everyday living. thank you kobialka...

I found this artist through the use of Halpern's music to reduce anxiety in the pre-operative setting for patients awaiting surgery. I now use it for new grandchildren at nap or bedtime and to use as my "wake-up" music for the alarm clock. Get it back in stock, others have it!

Rick Trevino is back. After a gold album and six Top 10 country hits in the 90s, the singer-songwriter moves to Warner Bros. for In My Dreams. Produced and co-written by Raul Malo (Mavericks). 10 tracks including the hit title track. Warner. 2003.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars His Best Yet.......2007-01-20

Was a big fan of Rick's music back in the mid 90's but I got away from listening to country music. I just stumbled on this CD and am very impressed. Every song is a winner. If your a fan of Clay Walker you will love this music as it will remind you very much of his song style and vocal presentation.

4 out of 5 stars Sounds like Raul Malo and the Mavericks.......2006-12-10

Rick Treviño had many hits during the 90's and sounded like most of the
C&W singers of those days all very much influenced by Garth Brooks. When
Rick joined the fabulous "Los Super 7", he met Raul Malo of the Mavericks
and they became very close friends something you can hear and feel on this great CD.
The music is just like The Maverick's and his voice has
changed from the Garth way of singing to Raul's which is a must better
choice. The song " In My Dreams" by the Mavericks is still a little bit
better but the rest is well done especially "Overnight Success", "She'll
Never Know" and the wonderful "Have You Ever Really Loved A Woman".
However I prefer Rick in his contributions to the Los Super 7 albums,
of course singing in Spanish, with songs like "Mi ranchito", "Ojitos
Traidores", Cupido and the best of them all "El Ausente". On his latest
recording he claims "I don't care about Mexico and I'm better off north
of the border" which I think is a rather unfortunate statement because
his roots are Mexican and there are a lot of hispanic fans all around
who really enjoy his music whether it is Country, Tex Mex, Conjunto or
the old traditional latin songs. By the way, why do they always print
Trevino instead of Treviño. Is he ashamed about the ñ which is a letter
that only exists in the Spanish language?

1 out of 5 stars Not as good as earlier music.......2006-11-19

I wanted to like this CD so badly, because I loved Rick's first three CDs. But this release is nowhere near as good as that earlier music. Gone are the excellent, rambunctious honkytonk tunes and the heartbreaking ballads. This CD is nothing more than the fluffy pop crap that passes for country music.

4 out of 5 stars In My Dreams.......2006-01-26

Rick Trevino's "In My Dreams" really was a pleasant surprise. I'm a big fan of Los Super Seven, which lead me to try out a Rick Trevino CD. And this one is actually good enough to rival Los Super 7's impressive output.

The CD is a good mix of classic country mixed with Tex-Mex, Americana, and honky tonk. I love the flameno/gipsy guitars that are sprinkled throughout the album.

I was surprised at how much I liked the cover version of "Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman". I didn't care that much for the original by Bryan Adams, but Trevino's is spiced up nicely.

This CD is produced by Raul Malo of the Mavericks. It definitely sounds like it has his touch on it. I would highly recommend this CD to anyone who's a fan of Raul Malo's music and Los Super 7's CD's. Good stuff!

5 out of 5 stars GREAT!.......2003-10-08

I first saw the In My Dreams video on GAC and new instantly that Raul Malo had something to do with it. That song gave me goosebumps - it's beautiful! I also knew instantly that I had to have the CD. Unfortunately I had to wait several weeks for it's release and I was not disappointed. There is not one or two or three good songs on the CD - ALL the songs are good! While the songs and style are typically Mavericks, Rick's voice makes the songs his own. Bravo!

Product Description

The label and graphics have changed, but the recordings are exactly the same as the 2000 Hearts Of Space release "Slider- Ambient Excursions for Pedal Steel Guitar". "Slider" is Bruce Kaphan's solo debut album. Known for his pedal steel work with artists such as Sheryl Crow, REM, David Byrne, Chris Isaak, Jewel, The Black Crowes, Jellyfish and American Music Club, and for the underscore to Bob Dylan's feature film "Masked & Anonymous", "Slider" contains all original compositions and performances featuring the unique sound of Bruce Kaphan's pedal steel playing. Zen music... sweet dreams of light and flight in which Kaphans licks ring like prayer bells across an open Texas plain. Rolling Stone Magazine. An ambitious and groundbreaking effort... langorous, soulful expressivity. The San Francisco Bay Guardian. Kaphan pioneered new territory for the pedal steel in the90s with alt-rock cult faves American Music Club... where he quickly liberated the instrument from Nashville stereotypes. SLIDER is an extensive rethinking of the pedal steel, with its silvery liquid tone refracted through Kaphans harmonic vocabulary, skillful arrangements and wide-ranging stylistic compass. Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Ahhh...HELLO?!?!?.......2007-06-18

Yes...this is very enjoyable material!

BUT--with this and Jeff Pearce and others...it's as if NONE of you have ever heard Pink Floyd's DARK SIDE OF THE MOON!! It seems as if everyone is "astounded" that there is a use for the pedal steel "other than country or perhaps soundtracks" out there! Has David Gilmore's masterful use and playing of it on that and other Pink Floyd work been forgotten THAT easily?!? YES...it wasn't the "primary" instument, but it's inclusion and useage and tone individualized and created with and for it are extraordinary and ground-breaking!

Wake up and smell the coffee brewing...oh ambient fanciers! :-)

5 out of 5 stars Don't think Country and Western, or Hawaiian music!.......2006-04-22

If you've never heard 'Clouds', you're in for a treat. I stumbled upon this song on my cable station's Soundscapes channel, and fell in love with it the first time I heard it. Bruce's music is pure magic. I never knew the pedal steel guitar could produce such a full and sensuous sound until I heard this album. He is a master of the pedal steel guitar.

Like a true pioneer, Bruce takes you down several paths, ranging from a couple of eastern-style tracks, to more traditional 'new-age' compositions. Not to leave country & western totally ignored, his 'High Desert' explores the lost art of western music. 'Outpost' conveys a sense of loneliness and isolation that its name implies.

Don't take my word for it. You can listen to every track on this CD from his website - www.brucekaphan.com. Then buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Country & Eastern And All That Stuff.......2006-03-04

When Bruce Kaphan's "Slider" came out in 2000, as one of the last official releases on the Hearts Of Space label, it made quite a splash-besides the English pedal steel player B.J. Cole and the equally obscure but still immensely talented Chas Smith, not much ambient/space music had been heard from the steel guitar as a source instrument.

"Slider" changed that in a big way: The track "Country & Eastern" substituted a slide guitar where a sitar or esraj might have been; "Clouds" and "Big Brain Small Brain" went off into Jeff Pearce/Michael Brook "infinite guitar" territory, but using the slide as opposed to a heavily processed six string or e-bow. Six years later, "Slider" sounds just as fresh. This is an essential purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Pedal Steel Music.......2005-11-11

Modern music fans recognize Bruce Kaphan's name from his work with American Music Club, Chris Isaak, REM, Black Crowes, John Lee Hooker and David Byrne. It's a rare treat to get an instrumental album from such an accomplished sideman. This collection of instrumental "new age" music was originally recorded for the prestigious Hearts Of Space label, and its tone is consistent with the sound of their popular radio show.

The tunes are dreamy, multi-layered steel tracks, dripping with echoes and punctuated with diamond edges. Bruce Kaphan combines his double-neck pedal steel, the recording studio, and a few tasty acoustic instruments to create beautiful ambient tapestries. This CD is on the leading edge of steel guitar art music. It's one of my personal favorites.

5 out of 5 stars Lovely collection.......2003-04-17

This is a super selection of soft and sweet works that can lull you to sleep. I particularly like this kind of CD for plane trips; I pop this CD into a portable player, slap on a set of headphones and I am soon far, far away from the unpleasantries of long airplane trips. It's also pretty fine for a candlelit dinner when you've made a lovely little chicken florentine, a rice pilaf, some kind of delicate dessert and put on your best little black dress. This is a very well-thought-out collection, and the performances are for the most part, very good ones.
