Bought it for my daughter who is expecting. We found it very relaxing to listen to and hopefully so will the baby. Love the warning on the insert.....Do not listen to while driving....yes, it would put you to sleep.:) Good music for meditating or doing massage.

music for babies to sleep .......2007-05-19

This CD was used in most of our childbirth and infant massage classes. It was relaxing but I had other CDs I liked better. While in the hospital, my new baby was lulled to sleep while sitting next to it. I called the hospital and asked what the CD was. Since ordering it, these CDs calm her when she's upset and she's been sleeping through the night. Every new mother should have these!

Unique CD great for pregnancy, birth, babies, and beyond!.......2007-01-16

This is a very relaxing, ambient type CD set to a background of soothing womb sounds. "Transitions" is a must have CD for labour and birth as it can really help a labouring mother tap into her body and relax (listening to it through headphones can amplify the effects). It is also a great CD for deepening mediation and calming young babies. You can't help but feel soothed by the rythmic sounds and music. This CD is money worth spending for any birth professional or expectant parent who is interested in adding another tool for relaxation and calming to their bag of tricks.

I have had Transitions for 10 years. My first son was was premature. We played it during his 3 month hospital stay and it soothed him. I also use Transitions for meditation. The music evokes an emotional response (tears) at times which is soothing and cathartic; it is also a wonderful cure for insomnia. I also used Transitions during my last pregnancy to relax and focus on being calm and serene, which tremendously helped me during labor and delivery! My Doctor was impressed with Transitions, too! With lights dimmed and music playing, I slipped into my relaxation mode which really helped me through labor. During pregnancy, I believe the baby benefitted from the calmness Transitions evoked. He would settle down from his wiggling and relax! I still enjoy Transitions for relaxation, mental clarity and peacefulness when the outside world infringes on sanity! :)

A joy to listen to.......2007-03-10

Both of these CDs are so much fun to listen too. My 4 year old daughter's dance recital this year is Little Mermaid and she's dancing to IKO IKO off LM II. She's so excited about it. Her and my 17 month old could listen to them all day long and sing and dance. Sometimes Mommy joins them too!! Highly recommended for all the little princess' out there.

Perfect collection to Little Mermaid fans!.......2006-04-05

Before I bought this album, I thought it was printed in the U.S.A, but I found it was made in Australia when I receive it. However, it's not important that where it printed. This album collected almost all songs from the 2 movies of Little Mermaid, so it's really colletable to real Little Mermaid fans!
Well, the soundtrack of "The Little Mermaid" is very familiar to many Disney fans and it will always be classic. The song "Part of Your World" is still so beautiful and calssic even though more than 10 years had passed. Jodi Benson's voice is always so unforgettable to every Disney fans, so to me. Especially the reprise of "Part of Your World", I can feel Ariel's steadfast faith and her beautiful dream from her voice. "Part of Your World" is the best ever in my opinion, even "Under the Sea" can't be compared with it!
But then, in the soundtrack of "The Little Mermaid-2: Return to the Sea", the musical legend continued! Every character performed perfectly. To my excitement, Jodi Benson returned! "For a Moment" is one of my favourites, and it's really indescribable! The melody and the lyric are beautiful. Maybe it feels better if you listen to it with watching the movie. "Down to the Sea" is a vivid and festive song, but it's a little confusing, and so is "Here on the Land and Sea". "Tatanic Tip and Daring Dash" is not much of a good song, but it's quite funny, and Melody's voice is so cute! However, this soundtrack is very imcomplete, there are 11 tracks in which I bought in China. The end title "Part of Your World" is in it too.
Generally speaking, this is really a good collection, you can collect all songs of Little Mermaid in only 1 purchase!

I love "The little mermaid", no mater the original or the second one. I bought this album with the help of one of my friends. It was expensive, but it's worth buying! The music in this two movies are wonderful, and I love Jodi Benson's voice very much! Her voice is like a bell and it's very sweet and beautiful. Tara Charendoff's voice is lovely too! The song named "For a moment" which Jodi Benson and Tara Charendoff sang together was beautiful and enchanted, I felt warm inside when I heard it. I suggest that if you're a fan of The Little Mermaid, don't miss this good album!

What is Wrong with Everyone???.......2005-01-30

Why is everybody saying this CD was bad, save one person??? The soundtrack for the original movie was wonderful, as can be expected. As for the second one, that was pretty good...at least most of them. I loved that lullaby Ariel sings to baby Melody, as well as a few others (something I can't currently remember). However, if unsure as to whether to buy this complete collection, I STRONGLY suggest buying just the regular ole Little Mermaid soundtrack, seeing as how so many people weren't pleased with the second...

Well, the original soundtrack is awesome. But the Return to the Sea..... not the best. I recommend that you get the original soundtrack and leave the double pack.

For all its wide stylistic span and just plain good listening, Kronos's Released 1985-1995 is problematic in that it doesn't acknowledge the group's decade-long pre-Nonesuch history with so much as a footnote. That aside, Released, which celebrates the first ten years of the group's association with Nonesuch, is like a great mix tape, stringing pop-song-length selections from 11 albums to wonderful effect. It opens with a joyous Zimbabwean cross-cultural composition; segues into a brief tango by Astor Piazzolla; and goes on to comprise classic minimalism (Steve Reich, Terry Reilly, Philip Glass), a broader palette of 20th-century classical (Samuel Barber, Henryk Gorecki, George Crumb, Arvo Part), and work truly unique to the Kronos repertoire (Ben Johnston's arrangement of "Amazing Grace"). A second CD includes a live recording of Jimi Hendrix's "Purple Haze," a catchy rendering of a wacky Raymond Scott hodgepodge, a novelty homage to Elvis Presley, and a selection from Scott Johnson's extraordinary musical setting of readings by historian I.F. It's not what it appears to be.......2006-07-17

A sampler should be priced at sampler prices to get you to sample the label or artist, usually around $10. On this set, the first CD is 77 min. but the second is only 23 and mostly worthless, except for the Hendrix piece (Purple Haze) which they claim is unreleased though it appears in nearly identical form on the "Sculthorpe, Sallinen, Glass..." album, released 5 years before this one. The first CD is excellent, however, and merits a $2 marketplace purchase.

I never knew classical could sound like this.......2005-06-22

I bought this CD with no knowledge of what Kronos Quartet was all about. I don't have a sophisticated taste in classical music, with my preferences running more to Copeland, Dvorak, Handel, Barber, and Holst.....accessible music for many people. I bought this to expose myself to a different approach to classical music and for the most part have loved the ride. The track America-Before the War alone is worth the price of the CD....its meditation on a society just emerging with optimism from economic stagnation but simultaneously rushing into war is incredibly powerful.

There are obviously many old favorites like Amazing Grace, Barber's Adagio, and a classic rendition of Jimmy Hendrix. When you listen, though, you will appreciate the diversity of classical music....there's so much more to the catalog than most writers Top Fifty lists.

a necessary, and excellent, sampler.......2000-10-09

I've been aware of the Kronos Quartet since WHITE MAN SLEEPS, but never took the plunge until now. What to do, when they've "released" so many records in the meantime? This sampler is the (near) perfect answer. It contains selections from 10 different albums. This serves both to give a sense of the breadth of the group's work (as well as the breadth of 20th century composition!), and also the flavor of some of their records if you decide to hear more. It is astounding music --RELEASED works as a unified whole, with two exceptions in my opinion, and those are the excerpts from the Reich and Glass albums. I don't like Glass at all, and the Reich piece is underwhelming, so I simply edit those selections out. Most of the other tracks are nothing less than stellar: Johnston, Gorecki, Riley, Crumb, Part, Tahmizyan, and Barber. The second disc ("Unreleased") is where my more serious dissatisfaction lies, and hence only 4 stars. You pay a 2-disc price, but this is not a full disc of music, and only 2 of the 4 selections really bear repeated listening. The Johnson track with sampled vocals by the great critic of U.S. imperialism I.F. Stone is fantastic (in a very '80s style), but the last two pieces are more novelty numbers. With all the material available, the second disc could easily contain many more cuts from the voluminous Kronos catalog. But with that caveat, I recommend this record. It sounds great in its own right, and it works quite well as a sampler.

Miracle Live by 12 Girls Band VCD.......2006-02-01

Although called a CD by Amazon and sold as such, this will not play on any average American CD player, DVD player or Computer Disc Drive. We love the music of 12 Girls Band but had to return the item at a loss because we were unable to make it play on anything we have. Supposedly VCD is popular in Asia but has never made an inroad in America. Order only if you know it can be played on your equipment.

Great Music.......2006-01-12

I have the Hong Kong DVD version of this Miracle Live concert, and I must say the music is just beautiful and rich. I have not bought new CDs and/or DVDs of music for a long time, except for the 12 Girls Band. I hope they will continue to produce beautiful music for us. Strongly recommended.

A sonic, cultural and visual extravaganza.......2005-12-15

This review is for the DVD version but the material review is valid for the VCD as well.


Initially I saw "The 12 Girls Band" on an HDTV program in a Chinese Restaurant. It was not the same program that is in the "Miracle" DVD, the HDTV special was perhaps better still. The memory of that program kept coming back to me, and the more I thought about it, the more I needed to see "The Girls" again. It is indeed fortunate that Amazon and partners had access to this DVD which does not appear to be published in the USA (I am willing to bet that after the recent East Coast concert series that situation will be corrected shortly, they were all sold out).

The Girls play traditional Chinese and Jazz fusion melodies on a scale that evokes a Grand Philharmonic spectacle. I enjoyed the traditional material and the occasional venture into remake of the classics like in track 12, the New Classicism (Beethoven et al) more than the Western style "Take Five". Do not get me wrong, they are all spectacular both sonically and visually, the traditional material is just more "right".

This concept of "right" is very interesting, all of the girls are stunningly beautiful, and they play the music with precision, maybe too much precision. There are hardly any un-necessary gestures or even smiles. When the enjoyment of doing something well comes across, it is in their eyes. Before the program is over, each of the girls will have her unique personality imprinted on your mind. Therefore, the "traditional" music seems to be more "right" with the "restrained" presentation style. On one track though, #19, "Happy Valley", two of the girls do what can best be described as an oriental drum percussion hip-hop number, by playing an overturned metal desk. Here they hand clap, play the bongos, dance, interact with the audience and look quite extroverted, something for everyone?

So the music is superb, the artistry is inescapable, and the presentation is? Pretty good actually, the stage is mostly flat with terraces for groups of performers, the uppermost and rearmost one reserved for the backing band. Yes, there are some electronic keyboards, guitars, and a very capable drummer backing the main band. The stage lighting is mostly monochromatic blue or red, with mostly sound synchronized motion. At times there are background visuals like butterflies or fish (the live fish I believe are projected on a muslin see thru screen stretched in front of the stage). Live fish being what they are did not swim synchronized with the music and so some of the harmony of sounds and visuals was lessened somewhat.

There are bound to be comparisons with "Bond live at Royal Albert Hall". Both are semi classical music, both are "girl" groups, but the presentation could not have been more different. One is classical Eastern, one classical Western. One is over-produced, while the other is under-produced (makes you feel like as if you are at the forefront of a cultural discovery though). In case you want to try an interesting experiment, consider that both Bond and 12 Girls cover the same song number "Victory" on their respective DVDs, Girls on track 11, while Bond does it on their track 12 and their Grand Finale. BOTH are fun, just different. Enjoy them both. I keep wondering what a mixture of "Renaissance", "Rick Wakeman", "Yes" and "Emerson Lake and Palmer" may have looked like when updated and performed by 12 Girls. This was pure unadulterated fun.

And finally, some technical notes. I have seen both the Japanese and the Hong Kong version of the "Miracle" DVD. The Hong Kong version is by far the better of the two. It has a 2 track digital stream, a 5.1 Dolby Digital track and a 5.1/6.1 DTS sound track. I have never heard DTS sound so pronouncedly better than Dolby Digital. The 2-track DVD audio only, on the Japanese DVD has a lot of audience noise and talking in the right channel. The Hong Kong (Universal) disk also contains the Bonus track "Freedom" music video. The music video is poor quality video transfer though. The wide screen main program video quality is better, but still not top notch. For now, I am willing to overlook this, as the subject matter is THAT good.

I have to admit i had never heard of this band until recently,and i was astonished, this band of instrumentalists are FANTASTIC to watch perform,and of course there can be no doubting their musical talents,i guess you could say there music is a kind of cross between that of bond and perhaps a hint there of kitaro style too,if you like either of these artists it a good probability you will enjoy listening to the 12 girls band too,they play acoustic chinese instruments,string,woodwind and even some percussion on one track,they are accompanied by a western style backing band
