beauty sleep.......2007-05-30
This music is perfect for bed time.
Beautiful classic music that lulls you to sleep.
Baroque Music: A Prelude To Sleep.......2004-05-30
This album is from the popular series "Set Your Life To Music"
series. The theme for this one is "Baroque For Beauty Sleep" which seems to be a companion to "Baroque For Bathtime". Baroque music, especially the slower movements in many concertos, are exquisite nocturnal pieces that ease the transition from being awake to falling asleep. The beautiful, elegant, slow, graceful music of many of these pieces will definately relax you and even help you fall asleep. It's therapeutic. There are so many reasons one can buy this album. It can help you relax and soothe you, as already mentioned, and it can be played in the background of a message therapy session. It can serve as music for a romantic evening or dinner. And lastly, it hits the spot after a long day and you're ready to visit the world of dreams.
Respighi's Ancient Airs and Dances, scored for lute and other Baroque period instruments, is the newest piece on the album. Respighi, a modern composer, was delving into neoclassic music and deliberately evoking the Baroque Era. It works wonderfully.
Naturally, no Baroque album is complete without Vivaldi's Four Seasons. Here is the Largo from "Winter" only it is played on panpipes by the New Age artist Zamfir. The sound is hauntingly beautiful. There is a sonata for flute and harp by Bach, the biggest name in the period and Vivaldi's "L'Estro Armonico" as well as Telemann's Suite in A for Recorder. One particular piece I enjoy and think you will too is the melodic and elegant Concerto Grosso No. 12 by Handel, the slow movement Larghetto E Piano. It is sheer tonal beauty. There is more concertos by Vivaldi, whose use of the flute is always very reflective and dreamy and even a solo aria from a motet of his, the soprano Elly Ameling sings "Nulla In Mundo Pax", a lyrical-coloratura showcase which crowns and concludes this gorgeous album.
Baroque to Comfort and Sleep By.......2004-02-16
Baroque is such a wide and wonderful musical discovery for us modern types. It is soothing and quieting to the soul, and in this case for the body as well.
Whether used as lullaby inducing or just listening pleasure and relaxation, this is nice collection. Including wide array of instruments: strings, flute, panpipes, oboe, flute, harp, guitar, recorder, piano, and voice --- this is truly enjoyable.
There is wide array of baroque composers as well --- Rephighi, Vivaldi, Bach, Albinoini, Telemann, and more.
Great price, great variety, great addition to your CD collection.
Guys! Don't be put-off by the cover art!.......2002-03-20
I commend the compilers for creating such a wonderful CD. The music is quite mellow, especially the pieces that are preformed by Zamfir, the famous panpipist. That whimsical woodwind gives a rustic, almost mythical feel the piece of music. You almost feel like you are in Arcadia awaiting a lecture by Chiron!
There is a good cross sampling of various Baroque pieces and Baroque artists. The variety is the spice that makes this CD worth buying and listening to over and over again. This CD also works well on shuffle, which remakes it into a brand new album.
There are a lot of oboes and string on this disc, and being a former oboist, I am electrified as I hear that instruments mellow honk!
Guys! Don't be put off by the cover-this is a good disc. Good for the mind, heart, and soul!
Mellow, but not sleepy.......2002-02-02
I don't know how to sum this one up. It is mellow, but you can't meditate to it. It's more upbeat than I would normally prefer to sleep to, but it works all the same. The music is performed so beautifully that I almost want to stay up and listen.
This CD is also good for reading to, because it is easy on the ears but won't put you to sleep.

Ancient Dreams The best of the New Age era.......2007-04-20
I share the same enthusiasm as my fellow reviewers here. For a short period of time in the 80's we had New Age music. Which of course was a subjective category. It encompassed all sorts of kinds of musical styles ( usually instrumental). Patrick O Hearn might have held the title as the best of this era.
Wonderful soothing synthesizers with crashing, primitive percussions along with exotic flutes and other musical instruments from around the world tied together in a transfixing musical combination carrying the music along winding through your imagination. Turn off the lights and let yourself experience this CD with your imagination. Even after all these years I find this CD better than ever. Time has not dated it. It sounds as fresh and introspective as ever.
Dark, mysterious, and a study in contrasts!.......2006-09-30
"Ancient Dreams," released in 1985, is the first "dark" New Age album I ever acquired, and it's still one of my favorites--juicy, complex and predominantly electronic. While filled with percussive textures, this is not mindlessly beat-driven club music; it's a fascinating, ever-changing and very intelligently crafted journey through mood and sound. One of the things I love about it is how seamlessly and elegantly Patrick O'Hearn manages to combine apparent opposites--heat and chill, denseness and light, drama and funk. It's truly a unique and deliciously striking brew of musical nuances--simultaneously relaxing and stimulating. In the liner notes, commentator Freff writes "Music wears a thousand masks, and exists for a million reasons. It reaches our heads, hearts, and our bodies. It can be gentle, pleading, angry, demanding, healing: as fierce as fire and as cold and dangerous as thin ice. It is so many things because we are so many things, inside. The most special music reflects our private selves." This is a perfect description of Patrick O'Hearn's keyboard and synth-driven compositions. For more electronic explorations of the dark and mysterious, try also the work of Tangerine Dream, Enigma and Amethystium.
Pretty good, but not his best.......2006-04-28
Not as good as Indigo or beautiful World but better than Between Two Worlds.
Dark and Mysterious.......2003-05-23
This was Patrick O' Hearns very first album. It came out in 1985, I wasn't even born then but my dad bought the album later in 1993 and I listen to it all the time. I loved every CD by Patrick O' Hearn the sounds he uses are so great that I could never listen to any of his songs just once.
"At First Light" is a soft song and gets louder towards the end."Beauty in Darkness" has a great beat to it and it mostly stays the same except for some other small sounds around it."Unusual Climate" and"Ancient Dreams" are also excellent songs and are probably my two favorites on the album. Most of Patrick O' Hearns albums are all dark ones except El Dorado and Rivers Gonna Rise are more of daytime albums and I would recommend them because they are different. The only problem is that Rivers Gonna Rise is very hard to find in most places. I am still trying to find a place to get a new copy of it but it is available used at half.com.
Buy all of Patrick O' Hearns music today he is an excellent musician!
Rich Sonic Visual... absolutely breathtaking.. brilliant.......2002-11-16
I remember first hearing "At First Light" literally at dawn as one well known New York jazz DJ had taken to start his morning program with this ethereal, powerful, provocative, darkly beautiful piece. I... was.... mesmerized. I promptly rushed to the record outlet and picked it up. I soon discovered that there was no let down throughout this recording. What that one piece promised that, and the remaining pieces delivered. Patrick O'Hearn is one of the great undiscovered. For this type of music, he is one of the very best. "At First Light", "Unusual Climate" , "Live Along the River Baal" and "Malevolent Landscape" are true highpoints. This is one to listen to from beginning to end. The pieces are different but flow together seamlessly. This was strong and brilliant debut.

3.5 out of 5 stars.......2005-02-01
This record is a bit of a disappointment. After their popular Nightfall record, the record label they were on made them rush another record out to try and capitalize on the bands new popularity. So they had to rush production to get this out and it is my least fav Candlemass record. It is still a decent effort, but not as good as their first two or Tales of Creation. But it is still better than anything they put out after messiah left the band. True Candlemass fans should get this but if you are new to them get Epicus or Nightfall first.
What was this supposed to be????.......2004-02-27
I picked this disc up back in 88 or 89 and just recently pulled it out again, because I couldn't ever remember listening to it. Now I know why it sat on my shelf so long! If you are a fan of competitive guitar riffs, or find yourself needing an album where every song sounds identical, or haven't heard an album featuring a warbling, screaming cow on vocals in awhile, then by all means pick this up. I enjoy the darker side of metal as well as the next guy, King Diamond anyone? But come on! There is nothing redeeming about this disc at all, except for the Sabbath Medley. Which only served the purpose of getting me to pull out the original Sabbath discs again, to hear the songs done well. I see Candlemass refered to as "Doom" metal. I am not sure what that is supposed to mean...unless "Doom" means laughing at the silly vocals. But I think "Doom" in this case was the forcast of where this band's career was headed.
A Doom Metal classic in every respect.......2003-09-06
Candlemass are without a doubt one of the most important doom metal bands in the world. Ever since their incredible debut Epicus Doomicus Metallicus they've gone a long way paving the way for other bands. They're among the founders of modern doom metal and while I enjoy each and every Candlemass record I consider the first 4 absolutely essential.
Ancient Dreams is the second album with doom metal vocal god Messiah Marcolin and the third Candlemass album. It picks up where the classic Nightfall left off. Leif Edling's songwriting and bass playing is at its best and Marcolin's voice is simply incredible. The guitar solos are brilliant. It is hard to believe this was released back in 1988 when almost everyone was into glam, hard rock or thrash metal. I appreciate and respect Candlemass for their courage to stand up for themselves and make the music they believed in even though they knew it would never sell millions. That is why they have lasted all these years and are considered fathers of doom. They always remained true to their roots be it with Marcolin, Vikstrom or Flodkvist. My personal favourites off this record are "Cry from the Crypt", "Darkness In Paradise", the title song, and "Bells of Acheron". There's not a single filler on Ancient Dreams though.
You might also want to check out Memory Garden, Solitude Aeturnus, Abstrakt Algebra and some other bands.
Bittersweet Dreams.......2003-04-19
Aaahhhhh... the bittersweet smell of death. This album introduced me to those guys, IMHO, the best swedish band ever, back in '91. I can clearly recall my first impressions when I first heard Mirror Mirror, Epistle No.81, and the really spooky Darkness in Paradise, IMO, the greatest highlight in this gothic masterpiece. They had a lot of trouble during the making of this album, which included the loss of their former producer, which didn't prevent them from producing a classic, however.

I have had this title on a cassette for over 3 years, and it is one I reach for constantly when I just want to feel more of love, gentleness, peace and connect with my spirit. I am going to get this on CD......it is hauntingly sacred music and most people ask me "who is that" when they hear it playing. It aids me in coming to that still place deep inside........

Short, new age ambient album.......2005-07-27
This is Patrick O'Hearn's first solo CD. It comes from 1985. It is only 32 minutes long. The sound quality is excellent.
This is one of those new age albums from the mid-eighties that took advantage of the new digital and CD technologies. It has a great dynamic range and beautiful sonic quatity.
Like most of the early new age work, this is all about the sonic qualities and making beautiful sounds. It is not about the compositions. Like many new age albums, this is just repeated sounds; very beautiful sounds; but no cohesive composition. I find it to be repetitive and boring.
There are some interesting parts to the CD, and track 6 is very good throughout. This whole CD might be OK as background music.
Patrick O'Hearn got his start with playing bass for Frank Zappa. He was then in Group 87 with Mark Isham (who plays trumpet on this CD). After that, he struck it big with Missing Persons, featuring 3 other musicians who used to play for Zappa.
the alchemist.......2005-02-11
extremely well structured album, perfectly rounded, not your typical cheesy new age!!! The texture of sounds and melodies are purely mesmerizing (malevolent landscape...), the recording, wich is fairly old, is truly state of the art... True passionates of textural music, don't miss that cd...

This album is simply a harp playing Celtic music in a very mesmerizing way. The music is beautiful yet relaxing; it will take you away. I like this album the best because it does not have many instruments to take away from the sound of Laura Zaerr playing her harp.
