4 out of 5 stars Nightcap - Marilyn Scott.......2007-02-28

The title describes very well the album on the tempo of the songs which are slow and easy for late night listening. If you are looking for some heavy and fast jazz this is not the album for you. The band accompaniment is very good and matches very well to the silky voice of Ms Marilyn Scott's.
However the title "Here's The Rainy Day" is played a bit on the slow side, but "Stardust" is well arranged. The song "Isn't This A Lovely Day" could do with a more lively rhythm. In general the album is pleasant to listen to for a relaxing evening.

5 out of 5 stars I always did have a thing for blondes..........2006-04-23

i discovered ms. scott's greatest hits collection " handpicked," about a year ago at a used bookstore. by the end of the album, i had become very taken with her and her sound. " Nightcap" is a fine collection of songs, which gives Marilyn enough opportunities to show off her singing voice and she doesn't dissapoint. her voice is smooth, never saccarine. and the supporting cast, led by george duke, make her sound elegant. i loved her take on the charlie chaplin tune " smile," " stardust," is a wonderful tune that sounds good no matter who sings it, but she makes it special. she never overdoes it, and she uses all the lovely nuances, the little things singers do to make a song effective. in the song " if it's the last thing i do," she sings " i'm gonna make you love me..."

trust me, i don't think in real life she has to work hard at it...

5 out of 5 stars Whew....give in to this........2005-05-02

Marilyn is smokey, succulent, and passionate. I heard tenor sax, percussion, keyboards, and guitars accompanying with perfectly timed crescendos in "Here's To Life", my absolute favorite song on this cd. The lyrics (I'm guessing the lyricist is Phyllis Molinary since Artie Butler is a producer and keyboard artist)described what many of us feel when reviewing our lives and will leave you completely mellowed out with a huge smile on your face. I cannot play it just once. The selections are all excellent. If you are seeking to add to your female jazz vocalist collection, this is a must have.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent ! .......2005-02-25

Scott has always been a perfectionist, and this album is another gem in her admirable collection of jewels.
She is one of the most consistent and gifted jazz vocalists on the market, sometimes a little overlooked, compare to the too hype, too lucky and too overexposed acts such as Diana Krall,Natalie Cole,Peter Cincotti and the glamourous cover- girls Jane Monheit and Tierney Sutton.
Her phrasing is just superb and soulful, the songs are perfectly
delivered, the feelings are heartfelt and beautifully expressed.
The production, well, the production is simply brilliant. It's another fantastic project by the only and one George Duke who has literally outdone himself in two spectacular productions in a row, this one with Marilyn and ,few months ago, with the latest offering from the incomparable Regina Belle, the magnificent, sumptuous masterpiece 'Lazy Afternoon'.
Here, with George "Midas" Duke's help, everything shines as solid gold.
George, you are a Genius and the number ONE among the jazz pianists, arrangers and producers.
And you ,Marilyn, you are just great !!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Innocent, smooth affairs........2007-05-03

Jazz/pop vocalist Marilyn Scott has a sugary voice that demands exuberant attention. Her songs wrangle with passion and finger snapping percussion. Enjoying traditional jazz and neo-blues styles, "Innocent of Nothing" is a familiar and yet still the future of adult contemporary vocal jazz.
Marilyn's songwriting is tight and compelling with her vocals enjoying the spotlight as her talents are well exposed through vibrant production here.
Ms. Scott is one of the West Coast's finest Soul/Jazz chanteuse.
I have to admit that she is extremely attractive...as well.
This selection of standards sees her on jazzier territory, that will appeal to fans of Diana Krall.
Engaging takes of "Round Midnight" and the ballad "Spring Can Really Hang You Out The Most" underline just how fine a singer Marilyn is.
The album is produced as always by the genius George Duke and features the man himself on piano, Ray Fuller on guitar, Brian Bromberg and Jimmy Haslip on bass, Vinnie Colaiuta on drums, Lenny Castro on percussion.
Special guest Patrice Rushen on piano.
"Icebox", "A Flame" and "A Change" are smoother affairs with gentle lilting grooves.
She has been around forever and I just love the classic songs she sings and her soulful style.
Enjoy !

4 out of 5 stars Old standards sound great redone by Marilyn.......2006-11-16

The old songs as well as the new sound awesome as always with Marilyn Scott. She is the queen of smooth jazz female vocalists in my opinion!

4 out of 5 stars Modern Vocal Jazz at its Best.......2006-08-16

Marilyn Scott comes at jazz from a modern, pop-flavored direction. I first heard her with the Yellowjackets, and she has a lengthy list of credits doing studio work in the blues and contemporary "smooth jazz." Her voice is irresistible, soulfully smooth and pliant with a hint of gravel at the top of her range.

Her new CD, Innocent of Nothing, includes two standards--Thelonious Monk's "Round Midnight" placed in a somewhat overdramatic setting, and "Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most," given a beautifully dynamic reading. Seven of the album's ten tracks were co-written by Scott herself--the leadoff "Round and Round," written with YJ pianist Russ Ferrante, is a standout. "Icebox," a collaboration with Ferrante and bassman Jimmy Haslip, has that contemporary funk that characterizes much of the Yellowjackets' songbook. In "The Wilderness," the singer/lyricist dreams of getting away from the city, and on "A Change," she and producer George Duke hope for better days to come.

You might not think of Bob Dylan as a jazz composer, but "It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)" works surprisingly well in this Jacket-like arrangement--it doesn't swing, but it grooves along on a pianistic bed complemented by tasteful electric guitar and soprano sax. And, considering the current state of the union, there is extra poignancy in her delivery of the line, "Even the President of the United States sometimes must have to stand naked."

Though Scott's music wouldn't be considered "timeless," Innocent of Nothing presents an attractive singer with an attractive voice in a pleasant, relaxing and enjoyable setting. There's nothing wrong with that!

4 out of 5 stars Great Buy.......2006-08-14

I am a newly found Marilyn Fan. I was not familiar with her previous albums and I was pleasantly supprised when I discovered Innocent of Nothing. Her smooth jazz vocals combined with great music lines were a treat. My favorite cuts were "Icebox" and "Round and Round". Innocent of Nothing, is a great buy for any jazz lover, hands down!

4 out of 5 stars A subjective review for the uninitiated.......2006-08-04

In reading the first three reviews of this c.d., it appears that those reviewers are Marilyn Scott aficionados, or at least ones familiar with this artist. OTOH, this is my 162nd review of a singer's c.d. for Ammy, but prior to listening to this, I was unfamiliar with Ms. Scott. So, I write from that perspective:

This c.d. is somewhat of a polyglot of styles, but with primarily "cool jazz" instrumentation. There are 7 originals and 3 covers.

I'm not one who is necessarily predisposed towards covers. In recent times I have given enthusiastic reviews to c.d.'s by Rene Marie, Erin Bode and Jackie Allen, and my enthusiasm has been aimed as much at the originals as the covers, if not more.

But here, I think clearly the best two cuts are the covers of Monk's "Round Midnight", arguably the finest original jazz ballad ever written, and Dylan's "It's Alright, Ma." "Midnight" has the most interesting instrumental arrangement on the disc, and "Ma" has all the power and anger of the Dylan original with the electric power of the band to boot. If the rest of this c.d. were as good as these two cuts, I'd give this 5 stars unhesitatingly. Ms. Scott has a most worthy voice for jazz, a strong straight tone with very little vibrato, and she sings with admirable expression.

But, my subjective opinion--and it is truly subjective, I'll admit--is that the originals here don't measure up to the covers. "Moods" (track 5), which has the "Innocent of Nothing" line, is probably the best of the originals, and "Icebox" (track 3) isn't bad; but they don't move me like the two aforementioned covers.

Apparently, this c.d. has hit enough cross-over markets that it's selling pretty well. Hurrah. I'm solidly in favor of jazz musicians selling a lot of c.d.'s. But if I knew then what I know now, I would have waited until this one hits the bargain bin before purchasing. And I'd take the one reviewer below's word, that this is not the best of Ms. Scott's c.d.'s, on faith. RC

5 out of 5 stars Smoothjazz.com Review.......2005-09-16

HANDPICKED is Ms. Scott's ninth CD release to date... And handpicked it is. Sixteen tracks in all, carefully selected from Marilyn's favorite songs from throughout her career. She conferred with music retailers across the country to collaborate with the community that supports her music to determine which key songs from various releases be made available on one CD. HANDPICKED includes "The Look Of Love," Top 10 Radio hits, "The Last Day," "I'm Calling You," as well as two previously unreleased in the U.S. songs, Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes," and "Understanding Love." Both are killer and we believe will find their way on to Smooth Jazz radio playlists around the U.S. A confident smoothness, and air of sensuality accompanies each and every Marilyn Scott tune uniquely, including these dynamic new tracks on HANDPICKED. This beautifully packaged release runs over 75 minutes in length and promises to fill the air with skillfully produced, silky, jazzy pop that will enhance any environment. Marilyn is excited about presenting this selection of songs, but she is not resting upon the work that reaped such a lovely bounty. In fact, she's in the studio as we speak, working on a brand new project with George Duke, Patrice Rushen, Renato Neto among others. Look for the new release on Prana sometime in early 2006. We'll expect nothing less than more carefully created and handpicked songs of the highest quality. ~Sandy Shore

5 out of 5 stars How Great is This?.......2005-08-20

This is a wish come true. Some of the very finest performances (not that you could ever really place one above another) compiled into a single CD. The song selection was done by Marilyn herself, and provides the explanation behind the title. These are all of my favorite tracks, and I've kept it in my car CD player non-stop since I got it. Anyone riding with me who reads the liners will always remark "I never knew Marilyn had so many CDs out". You simply can't beat her incomparable vocal stylings and the brilliant instrumental arrangements. I'm hoping that this review and turning my passengers on to her one at a time will change her status from one of America's best kept musical secrets and place her rightfully among America's most treasured performers. Now if we could only see her more live in concert!

5 out of 5 stars Essential Collection.......2005-08-18

I've been a Marilyn Scott fan for more than a decade. Subsequently, I have all of the songs on this CD, EXCEPT for her splendid rendition of Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes" and the magnificent, never-before-released (as far as I can tell) "Understanding Love."

That said this new collection sounds fantastic. I love having many of my favorite Marilyn tunes on one disc that I can play in the car, my home and even on my portable CD player (yes, I still use one of those). I highly recommend this CD to all longtime Marilyn Scott fans and to those "newbies" out there looking for a great place to start with this magnificent jazz/pop vocalist.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I can't believe no one else has written a review!.......2003-06-10

As a yoga instructor/musician, i am constantly seeking out music that moves and transports, centers and calms. I have heard all of Shaman's Dream's records, and this is my fave. The first track has one of the loveliest Shanti chants. I often use this CD in my classes, and it is fine to let it play without interruption, starting gently, slowing building into a steady rhythm, and then coming down easy. Shaman's Dream play frequently at trance-dance gatherings in Los Angeles, so they are well versed in what will move a listener, what will allow the thinking mind to fall away, what will evoke deep exploration. Craig Kohland is a master. If you like Gabrielle Roth, Anugama, Krishna Das, etc. or just Eastern music in general, i think you'll dig this.

The album Prana by Karma Surta is a refreshing and melodically enchanting blend of Indian Music across electronic trance of base n drums. Mona Jethmalani's sensuous voice against the backdrop of sitars mixed with electrotrance create an ambiance quite unlike any heard before. Fans of Enigma will particularily like this cd as it is similar but different to the musical stylings of Michele Cretu. All of the songs flow alternating from fast to slow melodic to harmonious. Pick up this cd and prepare for a sensory journey unlike any you've taken

5 out of 5 stars Classic Goa of the Highest Order.......2000-07-18

I am biased here because I love just about everything Japanese DJ/producer/mastermind Tsuyoshi Suzuki puts out, both personally and on his Matsuri Productions label. However this CD is by far my favorite of anything he has done. This is one of those rare CDs in which I can and do get totally into every track. This CD is what Goa is all about as far as I am concerned. When I hear "Goa" I think Prana. While Prana is technically a band, to many people, it is just Tsuyoshi. Tsuyoshi has a very personal sound that all permeates everything he does and this is his sound at its best. It is fast, hard and wiggles all over the place. Very vaguely like Hallucinogen but replace the craziness with more attitude. While I have yet to actually see Tsuyoshi live (which may change soon now that he has relocated back Japan from England), from every account I have heard, he rips it up. Some people I know claim he is the best live act they've seen and hearing this CD it isn't too hard to imagine that they are right.

        5 out of 5 stars most triumphant..........2000-04-01

This man is quite amazing. He knows how to get yer body movin! Although there are a few slow tracks on here, still, they all sound great. Its a must for any goa-trance head's CD collection. Very powerful beats.

4 out of 5 stars Great addition to my collection..........2000-02-24

This CD is a mix of goa and psychedelic trance really hardcore at times. Some of the tracks, like #4 Boundless and #6 Scarab (Green Nuns remix) are frickin' amazing. Every time I listen to them a rush flows through my body, ahhh! So fast, so strong, so great! The rest of the tracks are good, but are often a bit too slow to develop and are lacking in the complexity that tracks 4 and 6 show. It's totally worth it though. The artwork is also very interesting, the best I have ever seen on a CD case.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD, great band..........1999-04-17

Unfortunately, I heard only a single piece of the CD - that's "Boundless"... But I suspect that the whole CD is a REAL killer. Unfortunately, here's no local music company, representing goa-trance style... and credit cards are rarely seen in Bulgaria :)
