A broad overview of the two-decade career of David Lanz, Romantic collects music from his numerous studio albums plus four collaborative tracks and three compilation-only cuts. The pianist's works tend to fall into two categories: contemplative contemporary instrumental and classically influenced compositions. The latter is where he shines, as represented best by the sentimental stylings of "Cristofori's Dream" and "Return to the Heart," and the effervescent energy of "Vesuvius" and "Valencia." Most of these 27 tracks are solo piano performances. However, the soaring "Eagle's Path" (with Paul Speer) integrates rock guitar, and a few other pieces include orchestral instruments. This isn't a "best of" compilation, but the double-disc compendium is a good way for longtime fans to get lesser-known tracks and sample albums they are unfamiliar with. More important, it's a means for the uninitiated to learn about, and then seek out, other Lanz music of their choosing. --Bryan Reesman

A lot of times you find in 2 CD sets that the 2nd CD can usually have some "fill-ins". Not the case with this set. Great music. David Lanz is awesome.

Soothing and Calming.......2006-10-21

David Lanz is the best new age pianist ever. His style is smoother and calmer than George Winston and yet more melodic, styled, and "quieter" than Jim Brickman. With this new album, Romantic: The Ultimate David Lanz Narada Collection, Lanz brings out the best of his work with the additions of some new songs. Vesuvius and Valencia are among my favorites due to their great melodies and their soothing qualitites. David Lanz is the modern day Claude Debussy!

A Pleasant Collection.......2002-06-18

For some reason, I had thought this CD was new work. Instead, it is a compilation from Lanz's other CS's: a repackaged assortment of favorite tunes. As a "sampler" of other CD's, it is immensely enjoyable.

Lanz collects favorite melodies which delight the senses. Some sound like a cross between Mannheim Steamroller and Yanni, but all-in-all, if you enjoy his finest original piano melodies, you'll enjoy this.

Tasteful and elegant........2004-09-27

I am a DJ and ordered this CD when a couple asked me to play music for the wedding ceremony as well. Since it was an intimate setting, I thought a simple piano arrangement of the traditional "Bridal Chorus" and "Wedding March" would work better than full orchestra versions. This CD worked beautifully.

After searching all over Palm Beach County for a suitable CD for my daughter's wedding I came upon this one and really did not hold out much hope, but ordered it strictly because of the reviews. It is beautiful for the person who is looking for a more pure piano sound, free of all the other "stuff". Very well done, something for everyone. Worth the price and then some.

I am a professional dj owner and heard his music. I assist 100+ brides on their music choices and this CD is absolutely the best for a bride that needs piano solo music for the guests entering the ceremony (prelude) through the ceremony ending. It is a must have. Also in combination with this CD, is his piano versions of love songs "HONEYMOON SUITE" (My Heart Will Go On - Is The First Track). It is classic, clean and used over & over.

When my husband and I were planning our wedding, we wanted beautiful piano music, so we bought "The Ultimate Wedding Collection." It really made the wedding even more romantic, and now I listen to the CD at work and at home. On our anniversary, we often play the CD while we enjoy a quiet candlelight dinner at home. Now my father-in-law is getting remarried, and they are going to use the same CD! It's great for all brides, young and not-so-young.

What a bargain. You get two CDs with a total of 31 tracks. This is my first introduction to Tingstad and Rumbel, even though I have listened to plenty of New Age music, and it is hard to impress me. But Tingstad and Rumbel is certainly one group I overlooked and I am glad I finally tried them. Thanks to Amazon for promoting it to me. The music on the CD can be called relaxing. It's best putting on your headphones and working on something like a computer.

The duo of Eric Tingle (guitar) and Nancy Rumbel (oboe, English horn and ocarina) have recorded a string of wonderful acoustic albums for the Narada label since their first collaboration in 1985. This two-hour-and-fifteen-minute anthology collects 31 tracks from all of their non-holiday offerings beginning with 1987's WOODLANDS through 2002's ACOUSTIC GARDEN (which won the 2003 Grammy for best new age album). In addition, there are a couple tracks from Tingle's solo album A SENSE OF PLACE ("Monongahela" and "The Craftsman"), as well as Rumbel's stunning solo outing NOTES FROM THE TREE OF LIFE ("Lullaby"). Moreover, there are a handful of tracks otherwise only available from earlier Narada various artists collection: "Lo Que Tu Quisieras (As You Wish)" is from STORIES, "Sunderlal" is from WIND & REED, and "Crow and Weasel" is from A CHILDHOOD REMEMBERED. "Emerald Pavane" is from EMERALD, an album done with pianist and labelmate Spencer Brewer.

As much as I dislike the label "new age," Tingstad and Rumbel's music fits the stereotype. Their music is both soothing, calming, and (yes) elegant, just the type of music to help take away the stress of the day. The sheer beauty of their music will leave you breathless. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

I remember this artist from my childhood in England. I never missed any of his movies. His humor is typically English and sometimes a little risque and may not be understood by the average American. The collection on these two CDs include many of Mr. Formby's most famous songs, his signature tunes "Leaning on a Lampost" and "When I'm Cleaning Windows" are classics. This record is a must for anyone who remembers this great comedian, and wants to recapture the entertainment that he brings.

Keyboardist and multi-instrumentalist David Arkenstone cites Yes, Sibelius, and even author J.R.R. Tolkien as influences on his approach to composing, and evidence of their impact is apparent throughout this two-disc retrospective of Arkenstone's output from 1987 to 2000 for the Narada label. Using tracks selected from nine releases (plus a pair of label collections), this two-hour compilation showcases an imaginative artist who typically works the softer side of the progressive spectrum, at times leaning too heavily on dollops of sweetness or wispy ethnic flourishes when a harder edge would be more compelling. Even so, numerous tracks here reaffirm Arkenstone's ability to craft arresting, made-for-headphones soundscapes: the rhythmic, enveloping glow of "The Magic Forest"; the sonic aurora exuded by "Ancient Legend"; the violin-fueled Middle Eastern tempest of "Inshallah"; the uplifting insistence of "The Southern Cross." Better Than "The Best of... ".......2006-03-28

This is David Arkenstone. My first Arkenstone was "Valley in the Clouds", which is still good even if a little dated. I loved "In the Wake of the Wind", and, while I panned "Caravan of Light", I am still an Arkenstone fan.

"Visionary" is a "best of" compilation type of album. But its two disks are a true "vision" of what David Arkenstone really is, IF you can forgive the obvious cherry picking of tracks designed to get you to buy his other efforts. Be careful about that, listen first if you can, and read the reviews!

"Visionary" is much better even than Arkenstone's own "Best of..." which is currently out. It approaches (but does not quite reach) "The Best of Chris Spheeris, 1990-2000", as a best of compilation. If it was possible to go through every one of his works, and pick the three best tracks from each (opinions obviously will always vary about which tracks are truly the "best") to put on a compilation, "Visionary" has come as close as it is possible to do just that!

"Visionary" is highly recommended by this 19-year Arkenstone vet.

If it's true that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, then it's equally true that artistry is in the ear of the listener. The new age stylings of multi-instrumentalist (keyboards, guitar, flute, cello, et. al.) David Arkenstone can be at times, majestic and haunting and, yes, even playful--but always magical. This two hour-plus collection of his work (which surplants 1993's CHRONICLES and duplicates seven of that collection's tracks) is a wonderful introduction into one of the genre's most powerful performers. Buyer Beware!.......2007-05-23

Because of other "Moods" CD's, I bought this without listening to the tracks first. As soon as I heard the first track on the first CD, I knew I was in for an unpleasant surprise...and I wasn't wrong. There wasn't one song that didn't grate on my nerves. I am certainly sorry that I didn't pay more attention before buying.

music is relaxing. I actually bought this as a retirement gift because the person had listened to my own set and really enjoyed it. Worth sharing. Makes a nice gift when you want to escape from daily stress.
Turn off the cell phone, disconnet the blue tooth, don't answer the door, light a candle, pour a glass of wine and shut out the world.

I saw this in the bargain bin at Wal-Mart and thought, hey, six discs for ten bucks-- surely there's bound to be something I like in there. I'm also probably the most easy to please when it comes to new age music, but this...?

It starts with Vangelis' "Chariots of Fire", a peice that hasn't aged well, is over-used, and sounds trite in most instances. Then comes an utterly forgettable cover of Enya's "Orinoco Flow" which is so alike the original one wonders why listen to it at all if you have original, and so poorly done it's an insult to Enya, like so many other 'tribute' covers of her work (Neoera, I'm looking at you).

What follows is six discs of something that is trying way too hard to be new age music. It sounds composed by someone who thinks they're Yanni a third of the time, Christopher Frank another third, and Kitaro the rest, and succeeding at being none of them. Synth drum loops, synth strings, synth everything, and the ubiqiutous and over-abused synth flutes. And even if you can get past the OMG SYNTH EVERYWHERE feeling, some of the music is just plain jarring and clumsy.

Don't get me wrong, there were a few tracks I did like, but those tracks put together wouldn't have filled one disc. The [blank] Moods franchise simply needs to stop putting out junk.

Native American flutist Douglas Spotted Eagle dedicates this album to children as part of his efforts to support the prevention of child abuse. The result is a compilation of Spotted Eagle's strongest material, beginning with the very emotional "The Traveler," a piece the composer wrote after his children were taken from him. Rife with soothing cedar flute, this album sets an expansive, spiritual mood slow in tempo and sparse in instrumentation. Native chant and drums fill out the swaths of long, lush flute, ambient synth, and chiming guitar. "Daddy's Arms," though an emotionally meaningful song for what seems to be divorced and absent fathers, is definitely the odd pick out. Spotted Eagle is not a trained singer, and the tune would have benefited from one, especially since the featured instrumentation is piano à la Jim Brickman. Outside of this small peculiar blip at the CD's end, this album is a respectable collection of beautiful Native flute music that emits a centered, calming energy. --Karen K. Hugg

This is about the best music ever put down on a CD. This music is like a door to another world, even if you do not know it. The ethereal sounds on this album that is sure to relax and totally separate your consciousness from a busy world are unparalleled. For those unfamiliar with this sort of music, it is vaguely similar to Enigma (without chanting or hip-hop backbeat and sexual undertones). However, much like the gregorian chants, the rolling rythyms of the flutes and drums carry a well-known emotion that your soul knows if your mind forgot. This is the sort of sound that can wash stress and worry away... leaving you refreshed, calm, and perhaps a bit somber. It rarely spikes or troughs, but manages to rock your mind to a calm like a gently rippling lake. It definitely is a more natural, earthy sound. If you like grating machine noise, synthesized sounds, or anything along those lines, this may not be for you.

Inspiring.......2000-05-04

Spotted Eagle has become one of my favorite Native American musicians. I have much of his music. This CD is as good as "Pray," but Spotted Eagle actually sings on "Daddy's Arms." What a great voice he has! In addition, he states he cannot sing. Please Douglas, sing to us some more.

Every track speaks to you. Wonderful music. Daddy's Arms was beautiful and all the more moving for being sung from the heart. This was my favourite track and I thought his voice was spot on (no pun intended). More in English please.

This is one of my favorite groups, but I get tired of buying the same songs over and over again. We don't need another or . Clannad already has the dubious distinction of having more compilation albums than fresh ones.

The Ultimate Compilation.......2001-09-21

This is surely the best Clannad's collection. It offers us a precise cross-section of their already 30 years old work, including tracks from those first, pure folk albums, over very rare live recordings, eighties-pop, to nineties, in which they managed to keep their place at the throne of Irish folk, but ambiental and new age music as well. This compilation should stand at the end of every Clannad-fan's collection.
