One of the many oddities of Bob Dylan's long and unruly career has been the rather cursory recording treatment given his stint as ringleader of the Rolling Thunder Revue. It's a shortcoming that's rectified with the release of Live 1975. Prior to the appearance of this two-disc collection, Rolling Thunder's eclectic road show was chronicled only in the infrequently screened, Dylan-directed Renaldo & Clara film and the bafflingly brief and one-note 1976 live set, Hard Rain. In contrast to its predecessor, this set, culled from four appearances made in November and December of '75, captures the breadth and subtleties of Dylan's Rolling Thunder performances. "Tonight I'll Be Staying Here with You," formerly a coda from Nashville Skyline, is given a rather incongruous bite here, while "It Ain't Me, Babe" is colored brightly by multi-instrumentalist David Mansfield along with erstwhile David Bowie guitarist Mick Ronson, the sparkplug of the gratifyingly ragtag group that coalesced on short notice. Solo acoustic performances weave through caterwauling full-band treatments of songs old ("The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll) and new ("Hurricane" and four other selections from Desire, which wouldn't hit the racks until early '76). While the contributions of a number of caravan cohorts and guests are left out, Joan Baez shares the spotlight with Dylan on four numbers, most notably on the rarity "Mama, You Been on My Mind" and the traditional "The Water Is Wide." But despite its cavalcade trappings, it was Dylan's show, and this collection demonstrates finally just how close to his '60s peak the '70s Dylan was. --Steven StolderCustomer Reviews:
Dylan is king!.......2007-03-09
perhaps lower expectations are in order.......2007-02-15
The main problem with Live 1975, as a reviewer below notes, is the singing--or, as one might better say, the bellowing. Dylan has one of rock's great voices and in his studio recordings, including his studio recordings of the 1970s, he sings with astounding emotional authority (where does he get that, one wonders--how does anyone get that?!). In these Live 1975 tracks, however, Dylan is out of voice, bellowing either to be heard or else to "voluminate" in lieu of giving a more emotionally nuanced vocal performance. This is not an uncommon failing of concert recordings, but the present case is quite pronounced and I agree with the reviewer below that it seriously taints the enjoyment of these disks.
I may as well go on to note that the sound of the band is quite dense here. I think it's not a performance problem or an engineering problem, but one of arrangement: there are too many instruments crowding the middle range, so it sounds a bit like an undifferentiated wall of sound. Again, rather characteristic of the 1970s live sound, but rarely the case with Dylan's studio recordings.
In short, if you're curious about Dylan in the 1970s, there are better places to look. My favorite of the Live albums is the 1964 one.
This album rocks!.......2007-01-18
Another classic from the Bootleg Series with some essential takes.......2007-01-12
This series of shows, like many of Dylan's great post-'65 concerts, features a combination of hard-rocking band numbers and solo acoustic songs. He's got a great band, too, with several guitarists, a tight rhythm section, a violin, and even a pedal steel guitar. With this rocking ensemble he reworks several classics into hard rocking barnstormers. "It Ain't Me Babe" and "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall" groove at quick paces and sound almost unrecognizable from their folky original versions. "It Takes a Lot to Laugh" and "Just Like A Woman" are transformed from their delicate studio incarnations to anthemic rockers. Likewise, Dylan's new material (soon to be recorded in the studio as Desire) rocks hardest of all. The versions of "Hurricane" and "Isis" recorded here put the studio versions to shame, performed with fire and energy here that makes these versions the essential recordings.
Some of the album's best moments are the acoustic tunes. The recent hits "Tangled Up In Blue" and "Simple Twist of Fate" sound great, and duets with Joan Baez like "The Water is Wide" channel Dylan's folk past while at the same time remaining firmly rooted in where he was at that moment.
The Rolling Thunder Revue presents Dylan in one of his most daring and original endeavors, and the excellent liner notes tell the story quite well. This collection contains a great selection of classics as well as some great songs that are under-represented in Dylan's live catalog ("The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carrol"). It's a wild ride and a rewarding listen that I heartily recommend.
I LOVE THIS!!!!.......2006-12-06

stunning musical review.......2005-09-27
I am a retired music teacher, and this brought me back to the times when I played in large marching bands, or smaller groups for the local rodeo, as a college student. Great excitement in listening, and being swept away to a time when I had less to worry about.
The music itself has a great affect on me, besides the impressive way in which it is delivered. Great sound. Great precision. Great music that just isn't played or used much anymore. How fun to relive those moments--especially the ones featuring the trombone.

Album Description
Errol Morris' adroitly assembled documentary film "The Fog of War" examines the career of Robert S. McNamara-- United States Secretary of Defense during the Kennedy and Johnson Administrations and whose tenure includes the Vietnam War and the Cuban Missile Crises. Combining excerpts from 26 hours of interviews with McNamara, archival footage, filmed recreations, as well as newly declassified White House recordings Morris' filmmaking illuminates a national past that ominously parallels the contemporary political present. Morris reveals what previous biographies failed to investigatethe relationship between McNamara and the infamous United States General Curtis LeMay and their involvement in the firebombing of Tokyoalong with 67 other Japanese citiesin 1945. Errol Morris states "The easy thing to say would be McNamara is a bad guy, he did all these bad things...the story is more complex and far more interesting than I imagined. The disturbing thing is that this was a man with real ethical dimension who did something terrible."As with music previously contributed to Morris' films, Philip Glass' score to "The Fog of War" effortlessly supports and enhances the film. The music, at times lyrical and at other times intense, deepens the horrifying images of war, highlighting the ambiguities of McNamara's characterand the consequences of his actions. Glass' music reinforces Morris' effort to understand the difficult ethical questions about governing and power raised by "The Fog of War".

(G)lassy.......2007-07-28
Philip Glass belongs to this minute group of human beings. Fortunately for us, recorded music exists to make his work available to all and at any time. His soundtrack for the Errol Morros documentary on Robert McNamara is a lesson in how to create film music that unobtrusively ups the ante of the film it graces.
Glass' score both intensifies and accelerates the movie. It is nearly impossible for one not to experience a quickened pulse when Glass pulls together--of all things, a snare drum, a bit of low brass, and a flute.
Ah, that flute. It floats in and out of track after track, bereft of its customary vibrato, a penetrating, entrancing reminder that something serious is going on in the film. It is a masterful use of a small, metal pipe. At the command of Glass, the humble flute and its younger brother the piccolo punch considerably above their weight.
Who could write such a work? Probably only Philip Glass.
The movie's pretty good, too.
Excellent.......2006-08-09
The film was great, but the score made it outstanding. .......2004-08-05
Glass does something wonderful with this score; he gives war, uncertainty, doubt and fear a musical element, an audible personality that captures each bomb, burnt building and ominous threat in complete perfection, leaving your ears and your mind in a state of disbelief and amazement, thinking to yourself, "Wow, that music fits this segment like a glove."
The Thin Blue Line score made me an instant Glass fan but this score made me borderline Glass fanatic.
In my opinion, he surpasses Carter Burwell in the category of most unflinching film composer.......by a long shot.
A Great Soundtrack for a Great Film.......2004-05-24
ANOTHER GREAT GLASS SCORE!.......2004-03-31
This score has more variety than Glass's score for another Morris film, "The Thin Blue Line". By the way, will "The Thin Blue Line" ever get released on DVD?
The pieces are all short ones, which makes it an easier listen for Glass newbies I would imagine, but I would have preferred a few longer pieces- all the short pieces make it sound like "Glass fragments"- on some pieces once Glass gets going he has to come to a stop.
Still, I wholeheartedly recommend this wonderful CD!

Customer Reviews:
I'm gonna have to disagree with Delite Rancher.......2007-05-07
The feel of the record is evenly split between cleverly funky psychedelic rock songs and explorations in world music and musical dissonance. The two different styles fuse perfectly on "Pump Song" which utilizes a tape loop of Mickey Hart's Water Pump (which plays in the key of C to match the music) as the only rhythmic support, while another Dead classic "Greatest Story Ever Told" plays over that, ending with more explorations of dissonance, courtesy of Jerry Garcia's "insect fear" (what he is credited for on the sleeve).
The album also shows off the great vocal range of Quicksilver's David Frieberg. As well as contributing various bass, piano, guitar, and percussion parts throughout the album, he sings in a low-baritone growl (fed through various effects) on the slightly spooky rocker "Fletcher Carnaby" and sings into the upper stratosphere on the funky tracks "Young Man" and "Hangin' On".
Basically, there is little else I can say about this album, but it is definitely essential for anybody who loves the Dead, the Airplane, Quicksilver, or Country Joe & The Fish.
Overlooked and underrated.......2006-04-23
Seminal piece from the Marin County Musical Mafia.......2005-06-04
Other highlights:
"Blind John," a Jefferson Airplane song you may have never seen on an album (I saw it live during the Thirty Seconds over Winterland show)
"Deep Wide and Frequent," which is a jam, featuring stellar guitarists Jerry Garcia, John Cipollina, and Terry Haggerty
"Pump Song" features the water pump of Mickey Hart's ranch, and is the same song as "Greatest Story Ever Told."
"Hangin' On" is a great album closer, and features great vocals by David Freiberg, who sings on other songs as well, and Cipollina and Barry Melton, two of the greatest SG guitarists of the era, dueling it out.
A true must-have for any true Deadhead.

It's too late for me. Save yourself........2007-03-15
Rolling Thunder is the source material for 2 storm episodes sampled on Sounds of Nature: Thunderstorm (Thunder & Rain) also by Suzanne Doucet and Chuck Plaisance. See my review. My guess is that Rolling Thunder must have been recorded one room down from a broadcasting radio station. The singing and talking begin at 17:30 and continue with little interruption until about 45:00 into this 50-minute disc. I am using a regular Sony player, and the noises were impossible to ignore.
Let me document some, but not all, of the activity I heard. Yelling or singing occurs around 19:17, 27:04, 28:49, and especially 31:11. At 21:00, a woman begins talking, is joined by a man, and full-fledged conversation between the two occurs at 32:25. A man on a loudspeaker makes his appearance at 22:22, 29:29, 30:18, 43:29, and 43:58. High-pitched noises or falsetto singing occurs at 23:46, 26:24, and 40:04. At 36:00, there is singing and laughing, and at 37:48 I heard musical accompaniment.
I will feel like my money was not entirely wasted if this review stops at least one other person from buying this disc.
3-D Sounds - Very Realistic.......2006-12-14
Highly recommended - like all Sounds of Nature CDs by Suzanne Doucet and Chuck Plaisance. You can also sample the Rolling Thunder album and 19 other tracks on their Sounds of Nature Sampler.

Product Description
SOUNDTRACKThis 21-song collection of traditional and original music from the documentary film, Bob Dylan 1975-1981 Rolling Thunder and The Gospel Years, features Dylans former band members Scarlet Rivera (violin), Rob Stoner (bass), Regina McCrary (vocals), and Bruce Langhorne (guitar/tambourine) along with myself and my band, Highway 61 Revisited, The Worlds Only Bob Dylan Tribute Band. Together, we set out together to recreate the magic and passion of the music from Bob Dylans Rolling Thunder and Gospel Years to help bring the film to life. As on Desire, you will hear breathtaking violin work from Scarlet Rivera, and as on Slow Train Coming, Saved, and Shot of Love, you will be moved by Regina McCrarys passionate Gospel voice. Bruce Langhorne, Dylans guitarist and tambourine player from his early albums, plays on most of the tracks, while bassist Rob Stoner contributes original music. I am sure you will agree this historic gathering of Dylans musicians for the film soundtrack has produced some of the finest music youve ever heard. (contains no Bob Dylan songs).
