Customer Reviews:
A superb introduction to Bax.......2007-02-16
I'd never heard of Bax when I picked this up from the library. I was just getting into tone poems and symphonic poems at the time, so I decided to check it out. I was surprised by what I heard. The music was very beautiful, very interesting, and very nice. I found myself listening to the CD again and again without getting bored. The pieces were quite lovely, played wonderfully, and I found myself wondering more about this composer Bax.
There are five symphonic poems on this CD. Each one is different, with a different sort of theme or concept. While it seems that Tintagel is the best known, my personal favorite was November Woods, which is low, beautiful, and mysterious. The sound is good enough for me (as someone who knows little about sound quality and only knows that it sounds GOOD), the playing is beautiful enough for me, and the deal is great. This was a great disc to get introduced to a very interesting composer through a few orchestral pieces that weren't too long and difficult to concentrate on. Every song on here is nice to listen to, played well, and is very good.
I recommend this for anyone who wants to get into Bax but doesn't know where to start. This is a great introduction.
Nicely done, but . . ........2006-07-09
This was my first exposure to Bax in some depth, having heard only Tintagel before. I was quite taken by that piece. I still like it.
The balance of the CD, though very well played and produced, I didn't like at all. Ear-splitting, strident, unbalanced, ragged. Very hard to listen to.
Along with this I bought a CD of his syphonies. Not my cup of tea, either. I still like Tintagel, but the rest of Mr. Bax you can have.
The perfect introduction to Bax.......2006-01-10
It wasn't until Chandos released Bryden Thomson's first disc of Bax tone poems in the Early Digital Era that I became enamored of his music. I'd found myself resistent to his symphonies, which tend to meander, and, even many years later, I'm still not crazy about them. But the tone poems are shorter, more straight-forward, and quite marvelous. For someone who hasn't heard Bax, I'd say take Debussy, Elgar, and Holst, stir them up together, and you have something of an idea what he sounds like.
Thomson did a great job with the tone poems, wallowing and luxuriating in their richness. The problem is, 20+ years later, the early digital sound is more annoying than it was at the time. The strings are missing weight and body, the brass are shrill, etc.
This Naxos disc has really nice sound--full mid-range and bass, good clarity, warmth. Lloyd-Jones moves the pieces along with more momentum than Thomson did. (Boult did the same, in a Lyrita disc that isn't easy to find now.) In Lloyd-Jones' account of the Bax symphonies for Naxos, that's a plus, because it reins in their meandering quality to some extent. In the tone poems, I rather like a little "wallowing." But Lloyd-Jones' approach is perfectly reasonable, and, for this listener, represents at least an interesting change. The Royal Scottish National Orchestra is a little underpowered in the strings, but consists of first-rate musicians, and plays quite well.
If you haven't heard Bax, this is a great place to start, at the right price, too. If you know Bax's music, this is a happy alternative version. (Most, if not all of these pieces were included as fillers with the Lloyd-Jones symphonies, but it's worth it, in my view, to have them together in this format.)
MUSIC FOR TOURISTS.......2005-08-08
Whether Bax's symphonic poems were ever used as sound-tracks for 1950's films I have no idea, but that's the sort of sound they have. They are obviously 20th century music, but of a fairly traditional and romantic kind. They evoke legends in a rather superficial way, and I suppose they have `atmosphere' of much the kind that tourist books about legends have. They take us in turn to Cornwall, Ireland, a generalised pastoral scene of Greek legend, Scotland and the Chilterns. The composer was of East Anglian roots himself, and I would have thought that that part of England had plenty of individuality of its own, witness the poems of Crabbe to say nothing of the music of Britten. However if Bax's concept of East Anglia was less that marvellous coast than, say, Sudbury or Long Melford, it's easy to understand how he might have sought his inspiration further afield.
It is the duty, and it should be the pleasure, of a fair-minded reviewer to say at once that the performances here are excellent, and the recording too. It is particularly gratifying to me to be able to say again that the Royal Scottish National Orchestra is well on the way to taking its place among the world's finer orchestras. These compositions call for a bold and rich sound, and that is forthcoming here, as is some fine solo work from the orchestral principals. All the same, what I look for in second-league music like this is something completely special in the readings, the kind of wizardry that Beecham could supply. Perhaps that will be the next step in this orchestra's progress. For now, there's nothing essential missing, and this disc should be a pleasant addition, moderately priced, to anyone's collection.
These symphonic poems are what I might term `intermediate' programme-music. They are not overtly representational as Strauss sometimes is, but the programme is more detailed and specific than in, say, Sibelius's Tapiola or The Oceanides, which can perfectly well be heard as `absolute' music, related in only a vague and impressionistic way to their titles and supposed themes. I find that I get the greatest enjoyment out of them if I secure a reasonably clear mental picture to start with of what they are about, and link the episodes in the music to that as they go along. Without some steering of this kind I doubt I could really identify, for example, `a tonal impression of the castle-crowned cliff of...Tintagel', or necessarily be able to distinguish it from the sea rising to overwhelm the island at another point. To obtain this mental image I naturally resort to the liner note, which does this basic job adequately. I have to say, on the other hand, that this short essay is not its author's best. Exactly what is Bax's relationship to Ireland, for instance? After reading a poem by Yeats at age 19 he appears to have `discovered in himself a strong Celtic identity'. What might this be, `a strong Celtic identity', and is it any different from suburbanite dreams of getting away from it all? And if `the garden of Fand is the sea' and later `Fand's garden is seen no more' we appear to be encountering some apocalyptic catastrophe. A bit more thought and care in the writing would have been welcome, considering that points like these have an important bearing on the music.
Niggles like this aside, this is a very fine disc in the most important departments, namely the performance and recording. At a bargain rate in particular it can be thoroughly recommended, and it may be quite a while before we hear these pieces played and recorded so well again.

My thoughts on this favorite.......2007-01-09
This would have been a great CD of Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker, however the actual volume of all the pieces are so LOW! You have to have the volume on your stereo way up just to hear it at an audible level. Disappointed in this CD only because of the volume factor.
Family Favorite.......2000-12-04
I asked for this particular recording on cassette after watching the Pacific Northwest Ballet's production of "The Nutcracker" on television many years ago. Since then, I have heard many different renditions of Tchaikovsky's score, but none compare to this recording. Mackerras and the London Symphony work together in such a way that the ballet comes alive in one's imagination; the tempo is perfect, and the drama is evident.
This CD of excerpts is good for someone unfamiliar with the ballet -- it gives all the highlights. It's also great for someone unfamiliar with the works of Tchaikovsky, for I find it's very representative of his work (and I think it's his best overall).
This CD is now part of my family's tradition -- played while we decorate the tree and during Christmas Eve dinner. In fact, I'm buying another copy for my Mom, since the cassettes have seen better days! This is easy to integrate into your holiday music collection, and is guaranteed to put you into a festive holiday mood.

Tchaikovsky: The Nutcracker (Highlights).......2003-03-15
This is an AWESOME CD.
The Bells on # 7 will make you shiver. These are the scariest bells I've EVER heard. In Boulder City Miss Amy Does The Nutcracker Yearly. This Is 1 cd she use's. It has a Great Chinese, Spanish, and Battle. The Battle is The Best I have ever heard. On # 2 When Drosselmyer Comes in, there are Bells in the background(Like Miss Amy's). I would recomend this cd to any body. If you are doing the Nutcracker I would Strongley suggest Geting This CD. It is Just Highlight but it is the best Nutcracker Cd I have out of 54.

A fresh voice for a time-honored tune.......2003-09-24
I am a avid classical musician who likes to listen to all sorts of traditional music. I ran across this CD in grandma's house as a teenager. This performance preserves the mood and spirit of the original while infusing a distinctly modern flavor. It made me appreciate what contemporary compositional styles and instrumentations can add to traditional music. The standard orchestral interpretation can get dull sometimes. The synthesis of old and new elements of style make for an interesting and entertaining hearing. This is an excellent buy.
Excellent.......2002-12-04
I have heard many versions of the Nutcracker and felt the Narada version was the best yet. In fact, I play it year-round when I feel stressed. It helps me relax.
Great arrangements, performance & engineering! A Gem!.......2002-03-29
I have a very large Holiday CD collection and this is by far one of the best in the collection. The arrangement and performance are excellent and the recording engineering is superb! This CD will show you just how good a stereo system you have. You'll hear all the great nuances of the arrangement which is "fanciful and fun" as it should be. The playing is "bright" and "crisp". The overall feeling is uplifting, joyful, playful and fun. It does what I think music should do but often fails to, it moves you, it makes you "feel", it creates a vision. This CD passes with flying colors! The producers chose just the right number of musicians and instruments to give this a more light and fanciful feeling than it usually gets with a full orchestra. I listen to this one all year round. This CD is in keeping with a long line of outstanding CDs from Narada. I have given this CD as a gift over and over and it has become a favorite in every collection. Recommending this CD is a "no brainer". Give yourself a holiday gift ~ buy this one!
Nice newer rendition of NutCraker!!.......2001-12-25
As a listener of traditional classical music, I'm usually a bit aprehensive about buying "new age" recreations of a reliable old staple. With the Narada series, i've found that this version is an enjoyable fresh approach to this particular suite of music, even though i still enjoy the listening to the older versions. But for some reason, i keep coming back to this one.
I think there are enough subtle touches here to really add some style to the pieces, without ruining the feeling that an old classic has been tampered with. The versions of Pine Forest and Pas De Deux, in my opinion really encapsulate the feeling of the story, without loosing the emotion. The piano in Pine Forest can best be explained by being enchanting and melodic. In all, this recording is a staple in my play list during the holidays.
Good, but not enough.......1999-12-11
I got this CD for Christmas last year. It was a change to P.T.'s classic, that's for sure! This record is missing tracks, like the fight scene and the Parent & Grandfather dance. If you're sick of regular Nutcracker, this is great. If not, save your money!

This album out of the SOUNDS OF NATURE SERIES is my favorite. When I close my eyes and listen with head phones, I can feel the wind and smell the pine cones... It is a wonderful nature experience and totally relaxing. Highly recommended. Also recommended PINE FOREST (Sounds of Nature Series)

Customer Reviews:
This is a wonderful CD -- double set actually .......2004-12-23
Lots and lots of beautiful music, mostly choral. Great selection (interesting choices), all well done. If you like your Christmas music on the classical side, I think you'll like this. By interesting choices, I mean Kiri Te Kanawa singing White Christmas, or the Winchester Cathedral Choir doing an Andrew Lloyd Webber piece (Hosanna in Excelsis). Kings College Choir, Cambridge does several classic Christmas carols (First Nowell, the Holly and the Ivy). I think these CDs are going to get a lot of play. Each CD has 21 tracks, and none are "stinkers."

Customer Reviews:
The greatest voices on Earth.......2004-12-27
What better way to open "The Greatest Christmas Show on Earth" than with Luciano Pavarotti ringing in "Adeste Fideles" with Kurt Adler and the National Philharmonic Orchestra. No expense has been spared on what has become Pavarotti's signature Christmas carol. He also performs "Mille cherubini in coro," "Panis Angelicus," and "Gesù, Bambino."
The second great tenor of our age, Placido Domingo has to make do with the "Hosanna in excelcis" from Lloyd Webber's "Requiem."
Among the many fine sopranos featured on this two-disk set are Renata Tebaldi (whose recent death saddened all of us who loved her angelic voice), Leontyne Price and Joan Sutherland in their prime, and the always beautiful Kiri Te Kanawa.
You can decide for yourself which 'Ave Maria' is your favorite--the Schubert with Leontyne Price or the Bach with Kiri Te Kanawa.
Altogether there are 42 selections on these London Classical CDs, a few orchestral and many with very good groups, both boy and adult choirs. They sing traditional religious carols for the most part. Te Kanawa's "White Christmas" is about as secular as this recording gets, although Joan Sutherland gets to show off her perky side in "The Twelve Days of Christmas" and "Deck the Hall."
Special praise goes to boy treble Anthony Way and his haunting rendition of the traditional English carol, "What Child is This?"
In spite of its clunky title, this recording is highly recommended for Christmas traditionalists.
