Music for the Heart and Soul.......2000-02-22
Raphael's Music to Disappear In, side two, and various tracks from Halpern's many recordings have taken me into the heart, but this Spheeris recording held me there from its beginning to end.
I've used it many times for personal and group music and meditation and have given it as a gift to several special people who have also remarked that it resonated deeply. It is a very, very special work that deserves more attention than it has gotten, as do so many of this artist's recordings.

Acoustic bliss........2004-09-11
Regardless, it's a rare thing to hear so much talent and virtuosity presented so un-pretentiously. It takes some good skill to tackle Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata" on guitar for example (especially the rapid-fire Presto Agitato movement) as they do here, and their original compositions are marvels of fluid guitar interplay. They don't just play jumbles of notes clamoring on top of each other - the melodies weave over and around each other without ever becoming static, and their skill with melody makes it all beautifully listenable rather than hitting you over the head with dizzying blizzards of flashy technique. Outside guests pop up on sax and Warr guitar from time to time, but for the most part it just focuses on Paul, Bert and Hideyo doing what they do best.
Pathways also had the highest concentration of original CGT songs to date at the time. Their newest album Whitewater shows just how far they've come in the writing department; on this one, their originals and well-chosen covers were balanced to the best effect of any of their albums. Maybe I could wish they'd covered more of a classical range instead of devoting three tracks to Beethoven alone, but that's a small quibble. The fun factor of Bach's "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" being followed by the surf-guitar classic "Misirlou" does earn them some points.
Pathways is one of the best intros to the group out there, although Whitewater and Rocks The West won't disappoint either. And don't miss them on tour - they do all this stuff live and then some.
Leaping Pathways That Help Quicken Desire.......2002-12-04
Before their formation as a trio, Bert, Hideyo and Paul had previously appeared in various configurations of The League of Crafty Guitarists and had also served as three of the five members of the Robert Fripp String Quintet.
On "Pathways", a significant level of performance maturity is clearly in evidence. Thankfully, such maturity has been assigned to a repertoire consisting of classical arrangements along with original, intelligent progressive compositions that match well to their classical sensibility.
In addition to the guitar trio configuration, a number of tracks include saxophone played by Bill Janssen and Roger Lambson. The touch tapped Warr Guitar, performed by Trey Gunn, is included on a few of the tracks as well.
"Pathways" will serve as a beautiful introduction to the work of the California Guitar Trio. It showcases some of the finest examples of their warmly sensitive musical expression.
Some super tracks and some iffy ones..........2000-01-27
Sometimes I really enjoy their interpretations of other people's music (like Classical Gas) but most of the time their versions of well known classical pieces leave me cold. I think the CGT puts a lot of heart and effort into playing pieces of music that are better played by an orchestra (all the Beethoven pieces fall into this category).
Bottom line: I salute the CGT for their stunning original musical creations but I find the majority of the songs on this CD somewhat uninteresting.
This is a GREAT CD!! These guys are INCREDIBLE!!!.......1999-10-14
Absolutely superb.......1998-11-08

This CD consists of two Sun Ra LPs from 1973. The first was briefly available as an Impulse record, while the latter has never been released in any form. Both consist of guided improvisations in which Sun Ra cued the group's entries and combinations, creating multilevel performances with remarkable shifts in density and unusual play with sound. The title track of Pathways opens with a set of acoustic contrasts provided by bass clarinet, oboe, and muted trumpet that Sun Ra expands and shifts with mini-Moog and an electric keyboard vibraphone. Elsewhere, almost ambient keyboard parts collide with blistering saxophone solos so overblown and distorted that they might be played through guitar pedals. On Friendly Love, the preoccupation with unusual tonal mixtures extends even further, encompassing bizarre sound sources that emphasize the lowest frequencies. The "space dimension mellophone" played by Akh Tal Ebah on "Friendly Love II" has a bassoon reed inserted in the mouthpiece; the "Neptunian libiflecto" is a bassoon fitted with the mouthpiece of a brass instrument. And Eloe Omoe's contra-alto clarinet is pitched lower than a bass. It's Sun Ra in some of the deepest recesses of space, creating oddly somber and meditative music that's suddenly traversed by moments of strange light or almost conventional lyricism. --Stuart BroomerCustomer Reviews:
Don't judge by the cover!.......2001-02-08
Fortunately, Evidence has treated us to more than a stale documentary. These are some fantastic out recordings by Ra and his arkestra that are really no less monumental than his classic 60 exploratory works like Atlantis and Magic City, but posess what to my ears sound like a greater foundation in free jazz, where the former could be compared to nothing in jazz or any other format. For some that might mean a slightly more approachable presentation, but it certainly isn't any less demanding. On this and the 'great lost' album, the arkestra experiment with new ways to make noise--whether it be combining horn mouth-pieces with the body of a reed instrument, or Sun Ra body-surfing on his keyboard.
In short, while these are indeed some new and deeply rewarding recordings, don't expect Sun Ra to stop being Sun Ra. Its more of the same, but who's complaining?

Dead Can Dance, er, died in 1999, but the corpse of that band was barely cold before its members spun off in different directions. To the solo careers of Lisa Gerrard and Brendan Perry, we must now add longtime DCD percussionist Peter Ulrich. But fans, beware: though Ulrich incorporates some of his old band's grandiose medievalist and world-music tendencies, Pathways and Dawns has more in common with the art-pop of Brian Eno (circa Before and After Science), the quieter side of Pink Floyd (pre-Dark Side of the Moon), and the apocalyptic bardic balladry of Sol Invictus. This is particularly evident in Ulrich's singing, which he does in a treacly, somewhat affected late-'60s British psychedelic style--perhaps the disc's only weakness. Fortunately, there are other elements to focus on. The percussion, of course, is first-rate, and the varied instrumentation (strings, guitars, horns, bells) keeps your ear at attention, particularly on "Life Amongst the Black Sheep," whose sound alternates among Irish folk dance, tribal drum circle, and pastoral folk. Other highlights include "Taqaharu's Leaving," a quietly dramatic lament about a boy going off to war; the Dead Can Dance-like instrumental "Journey of Discovery"; and "Evocation," a rousing, theatrical, mesmerizingly bombastic number complete with a choir, pan flute, and angry horns. --Steve LandauAlbum Description

Puts a smile on your face........2004-06-29
Taqaharu's Leaving blew me away from the outset, it is the most DCD-like track on the album, but saying that, Peter Ulrich is under no obligation to create music in the same vein as DCD, and his own artistic vision does indeed reveal itself as a diverse beast.
Like so many people have said, I detect similarities in his delivery and style to early Brian Eno, and in this he veers away from DCD. There is also a kind of 1960's folk-troubadore innocence on the air here, and even the melancholy songs seem to me to be infused with optimism.
Life Amongst The Black Sheep is a definite highlight, it has something of a medieval feel to it, and is altogether a really charming song. Brendan's hurdy-gurdy playing draws the magic forth.
Tracks 4, 5 and 6 are all a little weak in places, methinks. I have to say that I was taken aback (probably visibly) by the gooey Nocturne at first listen, which paddles in a rather yucky "easy listening" soup,(though if you survive the limp first minute or so, the song does build to something altogether stronger).
Evocation has some really nice ideas in the way it unfolds, but there is something about the lyrics, or perhaps their delivery, that makes me cringe every time, plus I find myself comparing this track, and Journey Of Discovery, to DCD's album Spiritchaser, despite myself, and I have to say these tracks pale in comparison, they feel flimsy and are smitten at times with a New-Agey kitsch that never blighted DCD.
Happily, the album ends with two very strong songs, and I am always tempted to return to the beginning and play the album over again.
It's been 7 years since the bulk of this album was recorded with Brendan at Quivvy Church, and I understand there is a follow up album in the works, but wherever is it? I for one am eager to see how things evolve with the next album.
Pathways And Dawns always cheers me up, and I often reach for it for a burst of it's positive essence. Good on you, Mr Ulrich!

Great Under-The-Radar CD.......2007-05-10
Back in 1987, this CD was fresh sounding and after spinning the disc a moment ago, must admit that it is still refreshing. The blend of keyboards and world percussion instruments along with some excellent session drumming combines to make this a must have for the New Age collector. The first song, kicks off with a toe-tapping melody on keyboards, tambourine, synth strings and finally drums and bass to the lead acoustic piano. What is odd is that the first track fades out and the second song, Apex, starts with a bit of a jolt as the volume of this track seems to be a good 20 Db louder than the loudest point in the preceding song. Nonetheless, it has it's own excitement and is very enjoyable.
Reflections is one of those songs that uses a familiar refrain on which to continue building layers of instruments and counter-melodies. A very enjoyable tune that uses the first half of the song as a prelude to the final half.
The Far Country also has an Asian feel to it at the onset only to hint of a more middle-Eastern sound summing up with a good old country Celtic feel from the penny whistle and harp work on this song. Seems strange but all of these elements fit together quite well!
Gateway To The Sun sounds as if it were written and even performed by David Arkenstone as it holds the cinematic music-score type sound complete with Arkenstone's love of high frequency sounds from instruments, bells, synthesizers, etc. This is another nice toe-tapper. A good one for driving with the roof down!
Zone II definitely has an Oriental feel with the big drums and flute at the beginning of this song. The song incorporates the Tubular Bells type of musical round in which the music retains a central theme and is repeated and built upon with each successive pass.
Dharma is magical and probably the high point of the CD which isn't really fair as it sounds altogether different than the rest of the selections. I purchased this CD after hearing the original Narada Sampler (1) and was surprised that the rest of Bruce Mitchell's songs did not sound like the one for which I purchased the CD. Fortunately, it was not a bad thing as the entire collection on Hidden Pathways is very enjoyable... even after 20 years! The remaining selections I did not specifically mention are slower and carry more of a thoughtful melody line. All in all FIVE Stars!
