Editorial Reviews
Lori Nicely is Washington, DC's, fresh new talent for composing contemporary piano and instrumental music. Lori's songs have been included on the play lists of several Top 10 Adult Contemporary/Smooth Jazz radio stations.
Lori has composed for C-SPAN's Peabody Award Winning "American Presidents: Life Portraits" series, the 2000 Gracie Allen Awards in New York, and she was the opening act, performing live at the 2002 "America's Jazz Festival", in Washington, DC, which featured national artists including David Sanborn. Her piano rendition of the "Star Spangled Banner" was featured as the opening music for Washington, DC's, Chris Core radio talk show.
Lori's greatest musical influence is unmistakably Top 40 composer and producer David Foster. For her debut CD, "Our Secret", Lori teamed with Foster's long-time sax soloist for movie soundtracks and pop hits, David Boruff, who produced and is featured on several of her singles, including "Our Secret", "When You Are Here", "Too Late", "X", and "Remember When". Lori's "Foster-esque" composing style of lyrical piano with lush chords introduces a whole new level to popular instrumental music. Also featured on her debut CD as an accompanist is guitarist Thom Rotella, composer of theme for TV hit show "Extra" (2003); underscore composer for HBO's "Sex and the City" (2003); and has worked alongside pop mainstream greats Bette Midler and Cher.
Lori is a natural and taught herself to play the piano at age nine and was composing by age 14. She was formally trained in trumpet at age 12 and performed jazz, concert, and rock/pop music through college. Lori also plays acoustic guitar.

The screenwriting/directing debut of veteran British stage and screen actor Charles Dance tells of a pair of Cornish spinsters (Judi Dench and Maggie Smith) who discover a charismatic young Polish violin virtuoso castaway (Daniel Bruhl) on the beach below their home. The tale leads inexorably to tender romantic conflicts and a warm concert house finale. Composer Nigel Hess masterfully utilizes his background as Music Director and House Composer for the Royal Shakespeare Company to conjure a score that evokes its quiet, emotional dignity via neo-classical orchestral arrangements that feature real life young virtuoso Joshua Bell on solo violin. Hess' intimate original compositions form a virtually seamless tapestry with the story's requisite classical repertory choices, which range from Massenet and Debussy to Bell's delightful variations on Paganini's "The Carnival of Venice." --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:

Evocative........2007-05-15
"The Bird Of Music" is Au Revoir Simone's second album in as many years, and while it won't make them global superstars, those who like their music literate, warm and evocative will love it.
Stars builds to a sparkly, deceptively romantic chorus ("You make me wanna measure stars in the back yard with a calculator and a ruler, baby") and "Sad Song" trips along on a Stereolab pulse while limpid banks of synths swirl around.
Often beautiful, always intriguing.
Enchanting........2007-05-15
The trio share keyboard duties and play them in the tentative manner of a young child reading Braille.
Their songs have a twisted charm that's half cute and half disturbing and also strangely catchy.
Occasionally, as on the wondrous sunshine pop of "The Lucky One" and "Fallen Snow", they hit on the kind of blissful marriage of pop, harmony and weirdness that worked so well for Polyphonic Spree.
Elsewhere they excel in retro electro - kind of 60s MOR with a Casio beat.
As a record, it's much more approachable than their debut album, "Verses of Comfort, Assurance and Salvation".
You'll either fall in love with "The Bird Of Music"or feel queasy - or quite possibly both.
I dream of togetherness.......2007-05-15
And the Brooklyn pop band is in good form in their full-length debut "The Bird of Music," mingling peppy electropop and pretty little synthy ballads. It could use a few darker edges, but their shimmery music is a charming experience -- think Eisley on a lazy summer evening.
It opens with the sound of wind chimes, and a gentle piano melody. "A dream of togetherness/Turned into a brighter mess/A faint sign my spoken best," is murmured over the gentle ballad. "So I was the lucky one/Reading letters, not writing them/Taking pictures of anyone/I know..."
That tone totally changes with the next song -- a peppy synth pop tune that doesn't really live up to the title: "Play me a sad song because /That's what I want to hear/I want you to make me cry/I want to remember the places that we left/Lost to the mists of time."
With those two as an intro, the remaining songs pretty much straddle between them -- organ ballads, meandering fuzzy electropop, tightly-wound dance pop, languid little pop tunes, and a few that defy labels -- the ominously soaring "Violent Yet Flammable World," and the eerie finale "The Way To There."
Three young women playing lots of sparkly, shimmery synth... well, it doesn't sound like the stuff of great pop music. And even after their beautiful debut EP, I was a bit worried about whether their music would last the stretch over an entire full-length album.
Well, fortunately those worries were needless -- even though there's really only keyboard, they know how to mix it up. Their synth is bouncy, sparkly, languid, soft, shimmering, fuzzy, eerie, staticky, soaring, rippling and majestic -- they can do basically anything with it. It's laced with drum machines, and the occasional moment of violin.
The upbeat music is matched by the vocals -- all three contribute, and all their voices are sweet, pleasant and girlish. And their lyrics are pretty simple, but heartfelt -- lovers who've departed and loves that are dwindling ("to thaw the icy sentiment/of love that's gone when winter's spent").
But they include the occasional budding love song. I gotta say, I love "Stars" for this reason alone: "You wanna measure stars in the backyard with a calculator and a ruler, baby/I found a letter that describes how the moonlight will lead me to the distant place that you will be."
Au Revoir Simone made a lovely soundtrack for a dreamlike summer vacation -- shimmery little pop tunes, full of love past and future. It might not blow your mind, but it will lull it into a lovely waking dream.

Lords of Acid's 1997 release, Our Little Secret is an open book. Never daring to depart from lyrics that read like the stage directions of a porno flick, fans need only focus their attention on Lords of Acid's musical agenda. The songs still maintain the basic acid house recipe of fat, buzzy bass lines and disorienting rhythms. This album adds a little of all current dance music trends, from trip hop to drum & bass to keep the formula current. "LSD=Truth" rattles with amped organic drum sounds reminiscent of Meat Beat Manifesto. The first couple of tracks are drilled with speed metal guitars. Stylistically, this album is merely a tangent to Lords of Acid's debut album Lust. If this is your first Lords of Acid purchase, go with Lust--it's a better album. If you are collecting, the lyrical shock value will have worn thin on you by now, but the music is twisted enough to keep you engaged. --Beth BessmerCustomer Reviews:
just a tease.......2007-06-13
A little better than one would expect.......2004-10-07
The tracks on this album can be divided up into four very neat areas. One is for the songs that aren't worthy of a second listen: Horror, Doggie, Finger, Spank, and Pussy are those 5 songs that bring the album down far below the band's standard set by the mostly excellent Lust. Next are 2 strangely likeable tracks, which aren't really good but still kind of fun. One is "Me and Myself", and the other is the forementioned Rubber.
Next are the pleasent surprises- "The Power is Mine", "Lover", "Man's Best Friend", and "Deep Sexy Space". Lover is the album's best single (though the version available on the Lover single is the KMFDM "Cake Mix"), and Best Friend is a strangely passionate (and a little sad) song that tells the sympathetic story of a prostitute who's got no one but herself. Power is a great theme for dominatrixes that puts men in their place, on the floor and in chains; DSS is about aliens with 'little tools'.
And finally, the albums best songs are "Cybersex", "LSD=Truth", and "You Belong to Me" - which are all single worthy, and all better than the singles chosen for the album. LSD is definitely the album's very best, with the very lovely ambient sound that meshes with pure house for the ultimate musical 'trip experience' and vocals that finally put the great trivial sense of rage to good use- "bloodshot eyes needle vain bright colors / HIGHER HIGHER! / MORE! MORE power brain white doves!" which fades into a truly beautiful chorus- "he's on the inside, in his own world", that also makes this a true Lords of Acid career highlight.
Cybersex is the album's best dance / rave song, and holds it's own up next to the likes of "I Must Increase My Bust" and "Take Control". The second you hear it, you'll be moving faster than you have in (well, that depends on the last time you listened to the band) some time. And lastly, You Belong to Me is so captivating, it's hard to believe it's by Lords of Acid. It's obsessiveness is easy to relate to and it's hopelessly aggressive lyrics are the stuff of eternal anthems. It's just too bad the band doesn't give the music a little more room to impact like the message of the song.
So considering that this album is sold on the strength of it's singles, it's great that there are some real incredible songs apart from the singles to make this release a must-have for fans of this genre of techno / rave. Well, at least this a serious improvement over Voodoo-U.

Moravian songs, via Janacek, Godar, Bittova and Skampa.......2006-05-09
Skampa Quartet is great - the singer... yikes.......2005-07-28
The recording quality is not very good, either. On many of the tracks, Iva seems to be muffled and in the background of the recording.
Really - dont waste your time and money, unless you really would just like to have a recording of over 50 Janacek songs.
