5 out of 5 stars A wonderful masterpiece.......2000-09-17

Wim Mertens has composed one of his very best works. You can listen to this album over and over again, and you will always find a new melody that captures your heart. Some moments are of pure magic, and show this man is absolutely gifted. You won't be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars Expansive, visionary solo piano.......2000-05-01

Mertens has reached a new peak in piano composition (no voice) with this 2-CD set. In his previous "big cycle," Gave van Niets, Mertens created piano works that were 20-30 minutes in length, wonderful rambling pieces that have no comparison in current music. Kere Weerom part I contains shorter pieces (4-18 minutes), most of which share a short refrain, a sort of little fanfare, that appears in passing. But they get to that refrain from very different starting points, and the wide variety of techniques and musical devices throughout the compositions is fascinating. These are both accessible and "serious" works, not as austere as Gave van Niets part I. Mertens is as always a melodic composer with a strong command of the tonal and percussive range of the piano. The standout track is "White Ships," a perfectly constructed voyage through a melacholy theme that degrades into slow, muddy chord clusters before lifting itself back up to a gentle, thoughtful ending. In all this is a fascinating piano work that, while accessible to jazz and classical (dare I say new age?) listeners, is resolutely personal and intimate as only Mertens can be. Highly recommended!
