5 out of 5 stars The genius of Leah continues.......2007-07-03

On her second album, Leah branched out in more experimental directions. this album is edgier and less glossy than her first album, Veiled, but that is not a bad thing. While Veiled was about healing, Alchemy (as the name implies) is about experimentation. And her phenominal understanding of the art of songwriting and musical composition are displayed well here. It stands as a testament to the quality of this album that eight years after it was released it is experiencing a resurgence thanks to being featured prominently on So You Think You Can Dance. This album wasn't really advertised at all, and never got radio exposure. Through the power of cult followings, it is finally getting some of the exposure it is due. This album is a gem waiting to be uncovered, and you will not regret purchasing it. I bought it when it came out originally, and I still listen to it regularly, as I do with Veiled too. You will love this album!

5 out of 5 stars Even better than her first album..........2003-03-22

Love this album more than her first! Very strong vocals & lyrics and very entertaining album overall!! I highly recommend this album.

5 out of 5 stars Not only an excellent artist, but a wonderful person as well.......1999-10-24

I had the oppurtunity to meet Leah when I lived in San Diego, before she put out her first album. She actually played a demo tape for me in her car, and I remember wondering if the public had the capacity to appreciate her. I am SO GLAD IT DID! It was incredible. Since then, I've followed her career. I feel lucky to have crossed paths with her! She's got an amazing quality to her voice, and she's very beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT CD!!.......1999-09-23

Leah Andreone has been my favorite singer for almost 3 years now. Her songs never get boring, because they are all very unique. She has a great talent for singing, and writing all kinds of different variaties of songs, all of which amaze me!!

5 out of 5 stars A Totally Fresh and Interesting album.......1999-06-23

I bought this album on a whim - I had never heard of Leah before. I am amazingly impressed. This is one of the best albums I've heard in a long time. Her music complex, rich and vibrant. The songs cover a wide varitey of styles while still maintaining a similar element that connects them all together. The whole album has a very gothic sound to it while still being upbeat and funky. I highly recommend this album.

    4 out of 5 stars I can see why..........2007-06-10

Kip and the boys were looking for someone like this to mind-meld with... they were looking for some new direction and in my view they've found it.
I think Kip has steadily modernized his sound while retaining his identity
over the years, but the depth of composition and the eclectic instrumentation and patch choices from the synths are the driving force behind this merger of talent from different corners of the world. Musicians are always searching for something, so I'm not surprised, but rather happy Kip found some new chemistry to boil his blood with.

It's easy to compare this to a NIN type of sound, I even hear some Eric Serra (Fifth Element, ala Little Light of Love) even if the similarity is completely unintentional and non-influencial to the artist. What separates this work from NIN is a completely different melodic sense, and thus, chord changes and uses of relative major keys, which gives this album more of a hybrid sound between industrial and, at times, a more commercial flavor of rock. Overall, thumbs up.

    3 out of 5 stars Wingeresque.......2007-04-08

If you like Kip Winger, and basically enjoy his solo outings then this will be a sure fit for your musical enjoyment. Not alot of ground being broken here, other than a good rock album with alot of Kip's influences. I won't say it's the greatest, but just something different from a different part of the world, mainly the vocalist who put it all together from Turkey. At least his vocals are up to form and not whining or oversung like alot of artists from other parts of the world where you have to wonder about their singing ability.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best CDs available with Kip Winger - Review from Music Morsels.......2005-11-02

Highly respected Turkish guitarist/vocalist Cenk Eroglu has created an intense debut, injecting his talents into various incarnations of futuristic modern rock with a few choice wafts of prog and World. Think of the electronic based throb of Marilyn Manson and NineInchNails, twisted with the snarling rock power of Velvet Revolver and a subtle inflection of Waters era Floyd. Enlisting some collaborative assistance from notable U.S. musicians including Kip Winger, Pat Mastelotto, Rod Morgenstein and Reb Beach, Cenk's prowess in songwriting, vocals, and multi-instrumentations bursts forth like a supernova, augmented by thought-provoking lyrics. The feverish rock pulse of "Personal Antichrist," powerful soul grasping ballad "Without You", and the Mid-Eastern tinged synth pop of "Lucky Day" are just a few examples of why this is an imaginative modern rock force to look out for. 4 out of 5 stars Cenk is an impressive one man show.......2005-10-26

    The Good
I feel it is my duty to inform you that if you are expecting something that sounds like Winger circa "Seventeen", you won't. You will however be getting more of sound that mixes Kip Winger's solo releases with Stabbing Westward (on NIN, but everyone has used that comparison). Don't misinterpret what I said to mean you will be disappointed, because you won't be. Unlike NIN, you don't have to solve a mathematical equation to figure out what the songs are about.

On "Personal Anti-Christ", Cenk uses effective songwriting techniques to covey his message that you may just be your own worst enemy. It's all Cenk on the industrial sounding melodies that accompany him too. A pulsing electronic drum sets the pace for "Everlasting" and is soon met with some fuzzy guitar riffs. Cenk's vocal delivery on the chorus is full-of emotional pain (as is the subject matter). Give Cenk some touching lyrics and a piano and you have yourself the killer ballad "Without You". It doesn't have too many words, but it doesn't need too.

"Reason to Believe" was penned by Kip Winger and he shares vocal duties with Cenk. Sonically, the music arraignment uses more of Cenk's Eastern influences. "Lucky Day" also draws upon the same influence in the way it employs Turkish string and percussion instruments. It still manages to keep an epic industrial feel to it. "Willing to Wait" has Kip Winger returning as the main songwriter and bass player. The track has darker tones and themes as compared to previous ones.

    The Bad
Sadly, as good as this album is, it would have been better received ten years ago when industrial was the sound of the moment.

    The Verdict
Okay, so industrial music is tough sell in these modern times, but it doesn't mean there's not some good industrial music out there. Xcarnation combines that sound with Eastern musical elements that blend perfectly with Cenk's melodic delivery. Although they are used as selling points, the members of Winger are not very prevalent, and it's Cenk that steals the show. Whether he's laying down the rhythms or the vocals, Cenk is an impressive one man show with a flair for the unique and uncommon.

5 out of 5 stars You're Out Of Your Mind!!.......2005-10-22

Your Kidding Aren't you when you give one star??? How could you say it's not good!!! You are missing a whole lot.. When I heard the first time...I was instantly hooked.. I didn't expect a Winger sound nor a hard rock sound.. I went in without any expectation but I know that Kip was singing.. And also how could you say he sang backup vocals and played bass only.. He sang lead on most of the songs. His voice can be heard on all the tracks...This album yes is a project by Cenk Eroglu. His melodic song writing with catchy choruses mixed with a little bit of electronics is so refreshing to listen to.. I have most of rock and metal bands' album that's so inpactful with their sound.. it is so calm and relax to listen to XCARNATION because the enegy that it generates differs from an all out rock or metal band. You could imaging yourself in a different space and time because of its spacey electronic effects...This is one hell of a cd man!!! I will pay for 10 more without any questions asked!! I've always love Kip's melodic song approach.. Whever he is I will be there...If anyone of you are looking for a melodic songs with not much heavy guitars or a full band output..this is the album for you!!! Otherwise look elsewhere but remember this is not a HEAVY METAL outfit here!! Breathe the new sound in and digest!!!

4 out of 5 stars Now I fear you've left me standing in a world that's so demanding.......2007-04-05

Just when you're ready for post-grunge rock to die a band comes around that breathes new life into it. This time, The Waking seem to have taken the challenge. Ripped right from the pages of their prodominant peers (as has been overly stated already, Tool and Staind), The Maze is debut EP they have to offer.

Comparisons aside, The Waking have a lot going for them. Sure they capture the heavy aspect of rock but they also completely grasp the lighter, more experimental side as well. It's when they're experimenting that some of the CDs best parts are brought to light, what with the eery guitar melodies and Perf's great (yet immediately comparable) vocals. When they are putting on the 'rock' hat, some of the riffs they churn out are really quite impressive, and other times...not so much.

Restless throws you right into the world The Waking give you with The Maze. Restless is a classic case of a radio song (not always a bad thing!). It's easily accessible but doesn't grate the nerves when you hear it a few times. Tomorrow is one of the tracks that I'm not quite sure of. Everything fits together just fine but it just feels like more of the same, which is strange since you're only on the second track. True Faith serves as the reason to buy The Maze. The downplayed verses giving way to a soaring chorus isn't new by any means but I'll be damned if Perf's voice doesn't set this song apart from the other versions. Never Go Away and Drive are both great with the latter, Drive, giving us some excellent riffs and vocals. The former is a slower song with the lyrics on display more. The Maze's echo-y effect works well enough in the beginning of the track to make it a standout. The psuedo bonus track cleverly titled [Bonus Track] is merely a demo of Restless, so nothing to bend over backwards for.

My favorite songs are Restless, True Faith, and Drive. The Waking have talent and I'll be waiting to hear something full-length from them because if this EP is any indication we'll all be in store for something special. Here's hoping it won't be a long wait!

    4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Good Post-Grunge Rock........2006-12-06

This band IS just as described in the other reviews. Take Maynard Keenan of Tool and place him as the lead singer of Staind, and you have a good approximation of Waking. Dark, Aggressive beats with a brooding yet melodic voice makes for some great tracks. Like the others, the only complaint I can voice is the lack of tracks, otherwise I would rate 5 stars. If you are a fan of the Tool / Staind sound you REALLY owe it to yourself to get this album.

    4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good.......2006-11-06

Pretty good cd, could use a few more songs, though. Very good overall, and i like the live song at end of cd. I recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent! Amazing! .......2006-05-11

Every song is awesome. incredible vocals and well rounded sound all around. lyrics that aren't cliche or "cheesy". Their cover of "true faith" is so good, I would say it sounds better than the original by New Order. Dark and substantive, yet not too heavy. Love it.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome-Rock at its best.......2005-09-02

In my search for rock that wasn't "popified" or ordinary, I stumbled upon Waking [...] Every song on 'Maze' is an exemplary specimen of great rock, making the CD easy to listen to all the way through. Perf's vocals are a mix of APC and Tool's Maynard & Fuel's Bret, J.P.'s guitar riffs are powerful and unique, and the band has a chemistry that is essential in creating awesome rock. At 6.99, you'd be crazy to not try Waking's 'Maze.'

    Album Description

No One You Know, the 2000 debut CD from Northern California based Canadian songwriter Kenny Butterill has been described as a soothing, melodic blend of alt-country, Americana and Folk that conjures up lots of easily identifiable feelings and imagery. Comfortable music that feels good. The CD “offers up a dozen songs with material that ranges from no-nonsense love ballads to topical songs that tackle political issues from an individual perspective”.

In addition to some impressive chart performance abroad for the CD, the release of No One You Know CD yielded two singles - How Far Can We Go? and Balsam Lake - each being included on important Americana/Alt-Country Sampler CDs. How Far Can We Go? was included on Songlines' first Americana New Music Compilation, a CD utilized by public and commercial radio stations in the USA as part of listener appreciation programs. The CD featured Americana legends like Emmy Lou Harris, Joe Ely, Jimmy Dale Gilmore amongst others. And Balsam Lake (which reached #29 in the European Media Services Country charts in 2001) was on the first AFIM Americana CD “Get Your Kicks” that included icons like Doc Watson, Jerry Reed, and many others.

With descriptions from "great driving music for the open road" to "totally mellow makeout music", Kenny Butterill's No One You Know is a CD that appeals to a broad range of listeners.

5 out of 5 stars Kenny Butterill - A great artist emerging for the first time.......2003-04-30

Remember the thrill you got when you first listened to JJ Cale's or Mark Knopfler's music? You were taken by the songs and transported to a different place. Stories in their songs were emphasized by their voices as clear as someone speaking the story yet melodic. Combine the effortless but engaging instrumentation and you were hooked. Get ready, Kenny Butterill has arrived. From the first track to the last--that feeling is back! This Canadian raised musician is a wonderful singer songwriter. He prefers not to play live shows and is much more comfortable writing than traveling to perform. Thanks to his brand new CD, "No One You Know", he is now someone you can hear and enjoy. Kenny sings the vocals on this CD while adding acoustic rhythm guitar. He is joined by Peter Morrison on guitar, mandolin [2 songs], and bass with Daoud Shaw on drums and percussion [Daoud also engineered and co-produced this CD] and a few other guests. The songs are very memorable and well recorded and I plan to listen again and again. Say Kenny, how about one tour to Chicago--please? If live shows are out, how can you find fault with a musician who has "Thanks For Listening" next to his photo under the CD storage tray in the CD's jewel box? You can visit Kenny's site at [website] and read more about this talented Canadian artist. Meanwhile, order up a copy and enjoy a wonderful treat.--Steve Ekblad - [website]

If you like music that has a great beat and earthy lyrics - this is a great CD. The first six songs are definitely driving music on par with Townes Van Zant and JJ Cale. The artist has a rich, earthy voice and the guitar/mandelin playing is awesome.

      Album Description

In 2002, the compilation "Synthpop Club Anthems" turned a lot of heads, and introduced a lot of people to the modern sounds of synthpop. People who were unfamiliar with the modern synthpop scene found themselves pleasantly surprised with the mix of club-friendly, high-energy music, with melodic vocals and meaningful lyrical content. Much of today's club music is devoid of thoughtful lyricism, aiming for the easy "shake it baby!" cliche's and mind-numbing repetition, which even pushes much electronic dance music completely into an instrumental realm in hopes of finding deeper value at least within the sound structures. At the same time, some trends in electronic pop music, which hark back to the 80's synthpop roots, focus so much on the simplicity of synthesizer sounds that the modern edge and production technology are often lost. It's fun for quick amusement, but maybe not for the long term.

"Synthpop Club Anthems" was meant to introduce people to a variety of dance music sounds by bands that not only maintain a fun electronic edge grounded in recent technology and musicianship, but who also have not forgotten the value of a good song. The bands certainly maintain their own approaches and styles, but present new music which can move you in the club as well as in the mind.

In 2003, this is volume two in the popular series from the synthpop label A Different Drum, and it's even more exciting and promising than the first. Synthpop, like most music genres, should indeed build on it's roots, but should never stop looking forward and pushing into the future. Now, get up and dance!

4 out of 5 stars Kind of catchy.......2004-02-04

If you need to listen to music for that workout or a long car trip, this is a needed CD for all synthpop lovers. You can't beat the price and the artists. I personally prefer this one over the follow-up, but for less than 10 dollars, it is worth buying both.
