4 out of 5 stars Asmus Tietchens on Prozac.. not a bad thing, really........2000-08-30

In general I find Vidna Obmana, Steve Roach and the like not very interesting. Their textural sonorities, tribalisms etc. seem like just more old hat, and the element of mysticism and new-agism in their works tend to leave me cold.

This is why I think this association between the Belgian New Age composer and German minimalist-concretist Asmus Tietchens is so interesting. Obmana in many ways typifies the 'New Age' music Tietchens has professed in various interviews to hate so much. Yet here they are together! Maybe it occurred because Tietchens contributes no real material to the effort, other than what were essentially two of his earlier albums, 'Nachtstucke' and 'Linea.'

These two works were 'recycled' by Vidna Obmana into this record, hence the title. Now, we could spend a lot of time discussing what Tietchens and Obmana want us to think 'recycling' is, but suffice it to say that it is not 'remixing'. Recycling tears a prior piece apart and reconstructs it, often using only small sections to construct wholely new relationships. Some people have argued that the distinction between 'remixing' and 'recycling' is essentially pedantic, but indeed many of the original pieces in no way resemble what is done to them.

Now for the music. It is very dreamy, largely because Obmana chose his Tietchens material well. 'Nachstucke' which forms the basis for 1/2 of the material, was composed in the late 1970's, and could be considered one of Tietchens 'prettier' works. Recorded and produced by Peter Baumann (of Tangerine Dream fame), it was done on very simple machinery: one Moog, a reverb unit, and two tape recorders. Yet for its simplicity Nachstucke is a very melodius, florid work. Obmana crafts two particularly good pieces from it: "Opening" which is a gorgeously ambient piece, and "4th Theme" which has a gripping drone as its base.

Obmana's recycling of the 'Linea' work is also accomplished, though perhaps not as mellifulous. The original "Linea" was a work only released as a cassette on the very obscure Dutch Korm Plastics label. Somewhat Steve Reichian in its minimalism, it presages much of Tietchens later sound morphing work. In its own way hypnotic, it is not 'pretty' and I feel because of this Obmana was not as deft in his handling of it. Still, it beats 80% of the 'ambient' junk out there by a mile..

I think you should buy this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Expansive drone and trance.......2000-06-24

This is a release in which Vidna Obmana 'remixes' Asmus Tietchens. Asmus' harsher sounds are rendered into very pleasant, dreamy, and expansive soundscapes, some of which will remind listeners of the likes or Robert Rich and his more ethereal pieces. I'm not a big fan of either usually, but this work got my attention, maybe because they have achieved something new and different here. If you like Jeff Greinke, Robin Story, etc., you will probably like this effort too.
