5 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2007-07-23

I always enjoyed the Journey song "I Believe". I purchased this album mostly for this song. The rest of the album is great also.

5 out of 5 stars Living in the 80's again.......2007-07-13

This is a fabulous album of Journey's greatest hits and cannot figure out why I didn't have this album already, in my collection, because I like Steve's singing so much. When I heard it at the end of the Soprano's it brought back nice memories.

5 out of 5 stars It's the Journey, not the destination.......2007-07-12

Once Steve Perry joined Journey for the "Infinity" album, the band's course was inevitably reset. They changed direction from being a progressive rock band to an arena rock juggernaut. Perry's main contribution was a strong melodic sense coupled to his more soulful vocals. The hits started almost immediately, as "Lights" and "Wheel In The Sky" became FM Rock Radio staples.

That is what this greatest hits focuses on, the songs that became the standards by which the public remembers the band. If you were interested in the albums BEFORE "Infinity," I suggest "Time 3," which adds material from the years when Neal Schon was still aping his jazz-Rock tenure with Santana and Gregg Rollie was doing standard rock keyboard boogie. Personally, I liked them better when Perry got on board. The sound focused and the songwriting tightened. Songs like "Separate Ways/Worlds Apart" and "Any Way You Want It" could add a jolt of adrenaline to a day of radio. When Jonathan Cain replaced Gregg Rollie on "Escape," Journey took on a romantic bent from Cain's songwriting. "Open Arms" came first, then "Faithfully" (on "Frontiers") solidified it. These were pop radio songs without peer, and they make Journey's "Greatest Hits" an essential document of 70's and 80's radio rock. (The updated version includes the best song from the 90's reunion "Trial by Fire," "When You Love A Woman.")

The other reason you might be looking at this is not because of Steve Perry's voice or Neal Schon's guitar heroics, but because of Tony and Carmella. It was Journey's "Don't Stop Believing" that echoed out of the final minutes of "The Sopranos" closing episode. It was funny that Tony passed over Tony Bennett and Frank Sinatra for Journey and inspire a million parodies in the process. (Including Hilary Clinton...where the best moment is when she and President Bill Clinton are flipping through songs and Bill says "My money's on Smash Mouth...") Talk about cementing your place in pop culture...who could have asked for better?

This best of offers a pair of soundtrack rarities in "Only The Young" (from "Vision Quest") and "Ask The Lonely" (from "Two of a Kind"). Missing are a few crucial singles like "Suzanne," "Stone In Love" and "Walks Like A Lady." If you really want them, go for the box sets or individual CD's.

5 out of 5 stars Complete.......2007-07-09

This is how you do a greatest hits collection. You put ALL of them on there. Not a mix of half greats, and half "other", then release the rest on another "greatest hits" CD.

4 out of 5 stars Get the Infinity album too........2007-07-07

Unfortunately, it does not include my favorite song tandem Feeling That Way/ Anytime. For that you need to buy The Infinity album. It does include some great songs, a good mix of rockers and ballads. Definitely worth the price to anyone who loves classic rock and roll or was a teen in the late '70s. But do yourself a favor and get the Infinity album too.

Admit it: If you had to pick an artist to give voice to the wackadoo thinkings of a monkey beloved by most of the American populace over age 3, you could do a lot worse than Jack Johnson. Black Eyed Peas? Too hyper. Death Cab for Cutie? Too ironic. They Might Be Giants? Too eggheaded. Johnson, though the object of much rightful jealousy--here, after all, is a guy who only stumbled into music and vaulted himself up the charts after a successful career as a pro surfer--turns out to have the goods to do H.A. Rey, Curious George's creator, proud. Fans familiar with Johnson's earlier discs will recognize a certain laconic sprawl and easy fascination in his songs that suits the theme of perpetual puzzlement perfectly (here, let's not forget, is a guy who racked up fans with songs called "Bubble Toes" and "Banana Pancakes"). That the music takes a childish turn barely registers--songs like opener "Upside Down" are classic Johnson, all wonderment and groove, and the collaborations with friends Ben Harper, G. Love, and Matt Costa warm up, wink, and scamper off before packing on the weight of excess meaning. "We're Going to Be Friends," track seven, seals the deal--when you can make the White Stripes sound compatible with the Man with the Yellow Hat, you know you've got a multi-generational winner. --Tammy La Gorce

Description

Faced with the task of giving a voice to a central character that does not speak, Universal Pictures turned to Jack Johnson to craft songs that could provide a voice for Curious George. As a new father, it gave him the opportunity to make an album for both parents and children. Presented with early animations and the story line, Jack crafted new songs that capture the emotions of Curious George as he leaves the jungle to follow the Man with the Yellow Hat. He also turned to friends Ben Harper, G. Love, and Matt Costa to contribute songs that might bridge the gap between parent and child. Joined on the record by his band (Adam Topol, Merlo Podlewski, and Zack Gill), Jack duets with three of the other songwriters (Ben Harper, G. Love, and Matt Costa), and does a cover of the White Stripes' "We're Going to Be Friends." Parents who watched Schoolhouse Rock on Saturday mornings when they were children will recognize Jack's take on the classic "Three Is a Magic Number," reinterpreted with the 3 R's as a call to protect the environment and Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. Sing-a-Longs and Lullabies feels like so much more than your standard soundtrack due to its unified creative vision. While the songs have a universal appeal, their themes speak to a child's experience (or in this case, a curious monkey's experience) of the world.

5 out of 5 stars Great!!!.......2007-07-18

If you like Jack Johnson, you will probably like this CD. I loved the movie Curious George also. The music is very relaxing and enjoyable. It is also a CD that's appropriate for all ages, given the obvious themes. The music is nice to listen to without thinking about the movie-its good in its own right.

5 out of 5 stars I love this CD.......2007-07-13

I love this CD! The songs are soothing and kid-friendly yet I enjoy them too. We bought it because it was "Curious George" (and my son is obsessed) but I am so glad that we did. Well worth the price! It's a very mellow, feel-good, happy, easy-on-the-ears, calming CD.

2 out of 5 stars Curious George CD.......2007-06-09

CD arrived in good shape but it is not at all what I thought it would be. This is not a sing-along CD. It seems to be misrepresenting itself with such a title. Not impressed or satisfied with this CD. It was reviewed to be something different. It's simply music by Jack Johnson which tends to be very slow.

5 out of 5 stars Great kid music.......2007-06-01

My daughter loves this soundtrack and sings along. Very kid friendly and teaches kids how to protect the environment. Jack Johnson is wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars Feel good music.......2007-05-27

After seeing Curious George and then watching the music video in the Special Features, we had to get this soundtrack. My children will often go to sleep to it and then I turn it on softly when it is time to wake up. My children love learning the lyrics and singing along.

Recorded live at Dallas's Texas Stadium in 2004, this long-delayed release is worth the wait. Over 15 tracks, the three superstars sing together, separately, and in pairs for what turns out to be both a musical treat and a long draw of fun. Strait, who normally stands stock still in concert, loosens up and--surprise!--talks between songs ("That's country right there now"), and if my ears heard right, may actually say the word "ass." His is the strongest section musically, as he uses the western-swing classic "Milk Cow Blues" to stretch out with a fine showcase of his Ace in the Hole Band, and brings Jackson out for a masterful version of their hit "Murder on Music Row." But Jackson's set offers a personality-rich rendition of "Where I Come From," as well as a bluegrass version of Steve Young's "Seven Bridges Road" and a sturdy cover of "Texas Women," Hank Williams Jr.'s exercise in Lone Star braggadocio. Buffett gets a little too cute on "Margaritaville," on which over-the-top chorines shout, "Salt! Salt! Salt!" But when Jackson and Strait join him for a rousing romp through "Hey, Good Lookin'," you can almost see the ghost of Hank Sr. dancing in the aisles. --Alanna Nash

I am a "Parrothead" and have been for years. Jimmy's easing into Country is a great move in that it introduces him to many potential new fans. I wish there was a DVD of this concert available.

3 out of 5 stars Fun, but seems like you had to be there.......2007-07-04

Nice music from a stadium performance. Makes you feel you needed to be there to "get" some of it.

5 out of 5 stars Buffett master of style.......2007-06-09

Jimmy Buffett will be remembered in Music History as the Troubadour of the the 20th Century. His ease at

shining in so many musical genres makes him worth remembering and truly above the average pop star in the

opinion of this humble music teacher.

5 out of 5 stars Live at Texas Stadium.......2007-06-08

These are 3 of my very favorite artists. This album is outstanding. I think they had a lot of fun doing it and their enthusiam comes thru.

3 out of 5 stars Multiple stars are good!.......2007-06-04

I especially like when more than one entertainer participates on the stage or a recording. It always makes it seem more original and not the set patter you usually get. I like all of these artists so the combination is fun.

Mary Poppins may be one of the most beloved film musicals of all time, but it took 30 long years for it to transfer to the stage. This recording of the original London cast shows the wait was worthwhile though. The new version mixes in elements from both the original books by P.L. Travers (which she started publishing in 1934) and the Disney movie starring Julie Andrews, from 1964. (Mary seems to take 30 years to do anything.) Most of the original songs by brothers Richard and Robert Sherman (Chitty Chitty Bang Bang) are present--Mary Poppins is so associated with "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious," "A Spoonful of Sugar," and "Chim Chim Cher-ee," her Oscar-winning duet with Bert, that starting from scratch would have been unthinkable. But then George Stiles and Anthony Drewe came in and dusted off some of these songs, and wrote entirely new numbers as well. Miraculous, these are wonderful and blend in seamlessly with the 1960s tunes, thanks in no small to William David Brohn's lovely orchestrations. As the titular super-nanny, Laura Michelle Kelly is so warm and scrumptious that she might as well be referring to herself when she sings "I'm practically perfect in every way." The rest of the cast is equally adept, making this Mary Poppins sweet but not treacly, and the rare show to upstage its source. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

I have been waiting a while for a Mary Poppins musical and it is definately here! I definately wish I could go to London to see the real thing, but the soundtrack is the next best thing! It puts a little spin on the old story! I would recommend this to anyone who loves Mary Poppins!

4 out of 5 stars Great Memories.......2007-07-13

Good music ... great memories of when I was younger. Julie Andrew is missed.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible show!.......2007-06-17

I saw it in London, and there are literally only 2 good things about it: Burt walking upside down, and a few new (darker) additions from the original book.

Nearly all the original charm and SONGS from the Walt Disney film are missing. The new additional songs are DREADFUL and were not written by the Sherman Brothers (They weren't allowed to write new songs for this due to the miserable old broad author hating the film and having on her deathbed the proviso that Shermans were not to have anything to do with a stage version)

What a waste.

5 out of 5 stars The return of Mary Poppins.......2007-04-12

Different from the movie, this version develops the characters somewhat more deeply. I especially like the depth of personality shown in Mrs. Banks.

When the announcement came that George Strait was to be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame, there were those who thought it was premature. After all, Strait is only in his early 50s, and with 53 #1s, more than anyone else in Nashville history, he is still an active working artist, not the sort who sits back on a million-acre ranch remembering when. But one spin through It Just Comes Natural and it's obvious why the quiet Texan deserved his induction now. He simply has no mainstream peer, for either his consistency on the charts or his continuing to raise the bar with his confident, nuanced performance. Here, on an album recorded in Key West, Strait sounds even more relaxed than usual, as if he took more time to live with the songs--15 in all--before he recorded them. Throughout, he amply demonstrates his ability to choose material that pushes the country genre beyond its core themes of God, family, and patriotism while still staying traditional. So many of the songs catch one off guard, either because of their different subject matter (the way the lyric of "Come on Joe" gradually tells us the dead never really leave the living) or in their sophisticated approach to a routine topic (the head-spinning recognition of an old flame in Bruce Robison's "Wrapped"). Then there's the artistry with which producer Tony Brown's handpicked studio cats elevate an already great song even higher (a sizzling cover of Guy Clark's folk/honky-tonk/Western swing classic "Texas Cookin'"). Twenty-five years after his recording debut, Strait is still as crisp as the crease in his Wranglers. Yet the leader of the Ace in the Hole band has yet another card up his freshly starched sleeve. The man who doesn't talk in concert and rarely speaks to reporters leads off with "Give It Away," a divorce-and-damage saga set off by--surprise--a recitation! --Alanna Nash

Album Description

For the first time, Strait recorded NATURAL in a new setting - Jimmy Buffett's Shrimpboat Studio in Key West, Florida, where Strait and Buffett recorded "Sea of Heartbreak," from Buffett's LICENSE TO CHILL album, a few years ago. "I thought it might be a good idea to try something different," says Strait. "You couldn't tell that we cut this down there, there's no island flavor at all, but we just had a blast doing it. The studio is probably the smallest I've ever been in, with the musicians all crammed back in a little room - but we got a great sound, and it's such a relaxing atmosphere. I think I'll probably go back again." Recorded once again with Strait's frequent co-producer, Tony Brown, the sounds on the album reflect Strait's characteristic blend of traditional country structures shot through with a healthy dose of honky-tonk spirit and Western swing. Moods range from the introspective "Come On, Joe," in which a man's late wife tells him to be strong and move ahead with his life, to the raucous "Texas Cookin'," which is about just what it sounds like. An array of Nashville's finest songwriters contributed to NATURAL, including Bill Anderson, Bruce Robison, Lee Roy Parnell, and Guy Clark. "This album's got fifteen songs, which is more songs than I've ever put on a record before," says George Strait. "But I thought they were all so good, there wasn't one song on here that I would have felt right about leaving off. I really think we came up with one of the best albums I've ever done." The album in question, titled IT JUST COMES NATURAL, is being released in a year that marks Strait's 25th anniversary as a recording artist, and coincides with the announcement that he is the most recent addition to the Country Music Hall of Fame. It's also coming out alongside the jaw-dropping news that George Strait has become the all-time leader for Number One Country singles, as the album's opening track, "Give It Away," recently became his 53rd song to top the charts.

Love this whole CD, I may be a late comer for being a George Strait fan, this being the first CD I have bought by him (due to the 3 amazing songs I have been hearing on radio) but is a fan now anyway. I recommend it foir anyone who wants to discover George Strait.

I have been a George Strait fan from the beginning - I own every recording and have to say that he never lets you down. This album is really one of my favorites - the songs are all excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Near perfection.......2007-04-21

It usually takes two or three playings for me to really like a new George Strait recording. The magic he makes with a song is very subtle. Getting my ears around a new song almost always takes a while but then I can really enjoy repeated listenings. Not so with this recording. From the very first spin, it had me hooked and I'm still hooked. I've played it at least once a week since I bought the CD and it continues to please.

The Traveling Wilburys were one of the few supergroups that lived up to their promise, because they didn't try to. Things started inauspiciously when George Harrison, needing a B-side for a 1988 single, called in friends Jeff Lynne, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and Roy Orbison for assistance. Two albums later--the second without Orbison, who had passed away shortly after the first was released--the loose-knit collective had recorded material that was as durable, and occasionally eclipsed, the participants' legendary solo work. The Wilburys succeeded due to a genial and contagious camaraderie that permeates both discs. What could have been a train wreck of ego clashes instead resulted in a frothy meeting of the minds. These guys are having a blast, trading lead vocals and harmonies on energetic folk-rock, quirky rockabilly, and Beatlesque pop that shimmers with the respect and esteem the members clearly hold for each other. Harrison and Lynne's rather slick production polishes off edges that might better have been left unvarnished, but there's no denying the loosey-goosey craftsmanship at work in tunes such as "Handle with Care," "End of the Line," and a striking Orbison performance on "Not Alone Anymore" that ranks with any of his finest. Both albums were million-sellers, but oddly went out of print for about a decade until Rhino resurrected them, adding two rare tracks per disc as well as a DVD of music videos and a band documentary. The resulting package is a comprehensive overview of a once--well, twice--in-a-lifetime project that, especially after Harrison's passing, will never be repeated. --Hal Horowitz

5 out of 5 stars "Handle With Care" this is the ultimate prize!.......2007-07-31

As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various music supplies and recordings from the 60's and 70's.

You've heard the terms "Supergroup", "Rock "Legends", and "Heavyweights." The Traveling Wilburys exemplified the terms but what made the project so extraordinary were some other expressions "Respect", "Fun", and "Egos in check."

The opening track "Handle With Care" may be the best song written in the past twenty years. The sound of the guitars, the Harrison vocal segments, and the blending of the words and music make this a song for the ages. It is an example of a tune so powerful and addicting that if the rest of the CD were blank justice wouldn't be served if we didn't purchase a copy. The consistency of the tracks the guys penned is a credit to their collective genius. "Heading For The Light" is another instant classic. The vocals are delivered with such sincerity you feel that you are in the recording studio. "Tweeter And The Monkey Man" is Dylan magic. At any moment Dylan could deliver a masterful performance. The song is as eventful as the wonderful words found on "Desire" and Blood On The Tracks." When the follow-up CD came out many unjustly only wanted to compare it to the debut. The new release will be a great excuse to rediscover some brilliant compositions. "The Devil's Been Busy", "Where Were You Last Night?", and "Cool Dry Place" are reason alone that the follow-up should have been placed on a higher pedestal.

The bonus tracks are more than a generous holiday gift. "Nobody's Child" which originally appeared as a charity song for the Romanian earthquake victims is a song that any artist should be honored to have on one of their releases. If you have enjoyed previously the myriad of versions of the song "Runaway", here is another one that will mesmerize you! I don't even have to mention the DVD bonus with the videos.

It's hard to imagine a world without George and Roy. It is very easy to imagine how special their families are!

Enjoy the music and be well,
Craig Fenton

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-07-31

It's so awesome when a talented group like the Wilburys get together-it's so sad that this is all that they released. I want MORE!!

3 out of 5 stars Who Was In The Band? The Chicks?.......2007-07-30

The DVD was really the only reason to get this set. I had the originals when they were released. The sound is a bit better on these but who really cares? As for the bonus tracks, a total waste of time. They missed a lot of potential tracks which were overlooked as well as a "B" side. They could have even padded out the rest of the CD's with the 12" mixes. Nevertheless, they put Olivia Harrison in charge with Roy Orbison's widow assisting & this was the result! Jeff Lynne, Bob Dylan & Tom Petty should have had the say so on this one, not the widows. After all, who played in this band? Enough Said!

5 out of 5 stars If you are a fan.......2007-07-28

If you are a fan of Tom, George, Roy, Jeff and Bob you will love this set. I have both vol.1 and 3 on vinyl, but hardly ever listened to vol.3. I did not realize how good that album was. I have fallen in love with vol 3. The dvd with the music videos and the documentary is fun and very interesting. It is amazing to watch these artists at work. I highly recommend this set.

5 out of 5 stars HANDLE WITH CARE - THIS SET IS A REAL GEM.......2007-07-23

The Traveling Wilburys were one of the few supergroups that lived up to their promise, mostly because they didn't try to. Things started off simply enough when George Harrison, needing a B-side for a 1988 single, called on friend Jeff Lynne who happened to know that Bob Dylan had a studio nearby in L.A.. George's guitar was at Tom Petty's house and by that point they decided to do the group thing.

The group was complete with the addition of Roy Orbison, acclaimed by many as "The Most Beautiful Voice in Rock n' Roll." Unfortunately, Orbison passed away shortly after the first album was released, but the Wilburys succeeded due to the genial camaraderie that is reverberates through both discs. What could have been a train wreck of ego, instead resulted in these guys having a blast, trading lead vocals and harmonies that shimmer with the affection and respect the members clearly held for each other.

Harrison and Lynne's beautiful production make these records both listenable and memorable, particularly "Handle with Care," "End of the Line," and a breathtaking Orbison performance on "Not Alone Anymore". The CD's went out of print for about a decade until Olivia Harrison completed George's wishes to re-master and re-release the material, adding two rare tracks per disc as well as a DVD of music videos and a band documentary. The Deluxe package also includes a hard cover book of rare photos and a sticker.

This is a comprehensive overview of a twice-in-a-lifetime project that, especially after Harrison's and Orbison's passing, will never be repeated.

When George Strait's "She'll Leave You With a Smile" moved to the top of the country charts in early 2003, the handsome Lone Star crooner bested Conway Twitty for the most No. 1 singles by a solo artist. This collection of 50 chart-toppers, spanning 22 years, showcases the Cadillac of country singers at his best, blending traditional and contemporary stylings, but never straying too far from the core of his Texas barroom sound. "Fool Hearted Memory," from 1982, proves that Strait had his uncluttered production and straightforward vocal approach down from the start, no matter how many producers guided him to his peak. Through the years, the path to superstardom dictated that he trade the crisp Western swing of "Right or Wrong" and "Ace in the Hole" for squishy, mid-tempo crowd pleasers like "Check Yes or No" and "Write This Down." But he redeemed himself with such poignant heartbreakers as "So Much Like My Dad" and "…Smile." This retrospective's one new track, "I Hate Everything," about a man in a bar who's besotted more from pain than whiskey, doesn't match up with the singer's best material, but it's still got that irresistible Strait hook: average-guy sincerity wrapped in a down-to-earth heart. --Alanna Nash

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great but a little misleading.......2007-07-12

I love George Strait but I get tired of hearing about how great it is that he has 50 plus # 1 songs.
In the Country world that is fine.
But when they say that's it's more than any other artist of any style of music it's very misleading.
Pop/Rock acts like Elvis and the Beatles did not have a chart just for their style.
Pop merely means Popular, what is the biggest out of everything out there.
It's an all genre chart.
Therefore, when a "Pop" act reaches the charts that they have been labled for, it does not mean "Pop" music it means all genres of Popular music.
It is much more difficult to even make the top 40 on this chart, let alone # 1.
When Strait has a #1 song it is only the biggest Country song.
When Pop acts have a #1 it is literally the biggest song in the U.S. period.
Strait only competes with Country artist.
On Billboard Elvis himself had 30 top 10 Country singles and 11 #1 Country songs and 13 if you add Cash Box which is what this Strait set included as well, and Elvis is not even a Country Singer, but a various style vocalist.
Elvis Worldwide has had 91 different #1 songs, most of them coming between the U.S and U.K or Canada.
On Billboard alone if you count all the various Billboard charts, Country, POPULAR, R&B, Christmas, and Adult Contemporary Elvis has a total of 34 different #1's and 38 if you count Cash Box.
That is still less than Strait in the U.S., but when you consider that 18 to 21 of them are on the POPULAR chart, where you are up agaisnt all styles and not merely one type of music, it is more than equal.
If you combine all the Billboard charts again Elvis had nearly 70 top Ten singles and over 70 with Cash Box added.
40 of these were on the All Genre chart, just as impressive as a # 1 on a non all genre chart.
Elvis also has 151 Hot 100 Billboard songs, 104 Billboard top 40 hits, 154 Woldwide Top 10 hits and 91 woldwide #1's
Strait has no #1's in other countries or on any other American charts besides Country.
Strait has 34 Gold and Platnium awards for his albums by the RIAA, Elvis has 81 in albums alone.
Add the 53 singles and 16 Extended Play albums and Elvis has 150 Gold or Platnium awards.
George Strait is a great Country Singer, Elvis Presley is the King of Music.
That being said, this is a great double disc set of George Strait's
I am not attempting to bash Strait, I am a big fan.
Nevertheless, I am bashing those you don't know enough about the charts when they start making comparisons to Elvis Presley.

5 out of 5 stars ONLY THE BEST.......2007-07-06

It's a good thing that CDs are durable. I have literally worn this CD out listening. Great stuff. I am a permanent fan.

5 out of 5 stars George Strait 50 Number Ones.......2007-06-09

This is a fantastic CD! It has all of George's #1 hits in one place. I love his music because it's true country. His voice is so smooth and the CD offers a variety of ballads, upbeat tempos and swing. It's a great variety of music on one CD. He's so talented and really knows how to choose songs for his CD's. The only thing about this one is that it doesn't include "Amarillo by Morning". I would have thought it would have also been a #1 hit. This is a great CD and I would highly recommend it to anyone, country music lover or not!

5 out of 5 stars Wondeful!.......2007-05-29

I love these two cds. They have so many great songs. Alot of the songs I grew up listening to. It's just wonderful!

THIS IS A MUST HAVE FOR THE TRUE GEORGE STRAIT FANS, IT HAS EVERY SONG FROM 1982 TO 2004 , GREAT COMBO DEAL.

The CD was well represented by the clips on the Amazon website and came in time for our event. We did have a problem with the charge but that was taken care of promptly. Great service.

It is an excellent collection of classical music. I would recommend this CD if you have a friend who don't like classical music, since it has the most beautiful overtures and portions of famous artists. If you are a Classic Music Savvy you probably will not be impressed by it, unless you want to play the CD as background music in a friends gathering.

It's hard to imagine, but Beatles resident mystic George Harrison has arguably become the band's most curmudgeonly cynic. We offer as evidence this splendidly remastered 30th-anniversary edition of his 1970 multidisc solo epic. If the mini-boxed set's booklet and twin inner CD sleeves won't convince you (the album's familiar cover is colorized and altered to include backdrops of a freeway-tangled cityscape and nuclear reactor cooling towers, respectively), then maybe his liner-note apology for Phil Spector's "big production" (kind of like Da Vinci grousing about Mona's crooked smile) or his laconic, stripped-down, 2000 rethink of "My Sweet Lord" will. With such a mindset, it's unsurprising Harrison has allowed a nearly decade-and-a-half gap to grow between recordings. Still, no amount of grumpy auto-revisionism can subtract from the admittedly overwrought majesty of these tracks, which were the logical sonic extension of Abbey Road. It remains Harrison's unequaled masterpiece. The devolved "My Sweet Lord" aside, the bonus tracks here offer new insight: the unreleased "I Live for You" further highlights the album's oft overlooked country facet; spare takes of "Beware of Darkness" and "Let It Down" underscore the strength of Harrison's songwriting; an alternate backing track of "What Is Life" demonstrates the meticulousness of Spector's production. And then there's the project's truly stellar session lineup, which included Eric Clapton, Ringo Starr, Klaus Voorman, Jim Gordon, Dave Mason, Badfinger, Billy Preston, Ginger Baker, Carl Radle, Gary Brooker, Jim Price, Bobby Keys, Pete Drake and, it turns out, even Phil Collins! --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars ALL THINGS MUST PASS (but George Harrison's spiritual rock triple album is still a classic).......2007-06-24

George Harrison's All Things Must Pass (1970) was the second triple album ever to reach the No.1 spot on the U.S. charts (Woodstock was first, and Wings Over America was the third in 1976). It's a rock classic, and it includes many of George's most spiritual songs, including, of course, My Sweet Lord. The album's texture and mood is sincere, sacred, and immaculate. Phil Spector's "wall of sound" production helps to create that mood, giving the album an intensity and reverence that is most often found in a House of Worship. Other songs on the album, like Apple Scruffs, If Not for You, and the wonderful outtake, I Live For You, all have an English country music sound that features pedal steel guitar, harmonica, and acoustic slide guitar. All of these are real treats, and add to the album's variety. On the spiritual side, My Sweet Lord, Hear Me Lord, The Art Of Dying, and Awaiting On You All are direct in their meaning of finding, knowing, and loving God. Others, like All Things Must Pass, Isn't It A Pity, and Beware Of Darkness, are also spiritual, but in a worldly, more practical way. All of these songs are very good, all are thought provoking, and George sounds great on every one of them. His excellant guitar playing is highlighted throughout (by the time George joined The Beatles, he was one of the hottest young guitar players in Liverpool), and his passionate search for knowing God more intimately seems genuine and pure. The album includes electric guitar fueled straight ahead rock n' roll, acoustic guitar based folk-rock music, and ballads with orchestration. There's an all-star jam session that includes Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker, Billy Preston, and Dave Mason, among others, and although pretty good, it's really just a curiosity. There are some extra tracks included, and some are very good. The afore mentioned I Live For You, and an unplugged and passionate Let It Down from 2000 are the best of these, but My Sweet Lord (2000) and an unplugged Beware Of Darkness from 2000 are also very good. All Things Must Pass is a wise and spiritually uplifting musical experience, a rock classic that belongs in every music collection, and it's George Harrison's very best album. And you've gotta love that album cover!

The recording is excellent; the quality is very good and the material is vintage Harrison stuff... well done. But why the bulky packaging? This two-CD set should be in a standard-size double-disc jewel case so it could fit on our shelves or in portable CD carriers. It's an important album for Harrison fans, but needs a better package!

5 out of 5 stars The Endearing Classics of George Harrision- It's Within You.......2007-06-05

I am one of those sad sacks who threw away all his vinyl albums when 8 tracks, cassettes and cd's all made those wonderful album covers and contents obsolete along with BSR turntables and diamond needles. Trouble is that now I miss those classic rock and folk treasures and wind up buying them again on CD and spreading them out into all my devices. One of these events involved All Things Must Pass, George Harrison.

George Harrison, if you remember and are old enough to recall, was the lead Beatle when it came to such things as transcendental meditation, the Mahareeshi Mahesh Yoga, and controversal trips to India with musical input from Ravi Shankar. Not only was George darker, more psychological in his music, a bit wailing and depressing, but he may have been just as good in his own right as the Beatle hierarchy; John and Paul. This particular CD, All Things Must Pass has two entries, Beware of Darkness and Isn't it a Pity that are particularly ingeneous because they exemplify George Harrison's uncompromising ability to bring out from listeners both pathos and unmitigated pleasure st the same time. George's guitar skills I always thought were better than the other lads. When you add such jewels as Wah Wah, My Sweet Lord (Chiffons or no Chiffons?), and Apple Scruffs you wind up with a CD set that rivals the so-called perfect albums ie. Dark Side of the Moon, Rumours, Tapestry. So even if you don't usually double purchase, sometimes getting it right is better than denying yourself the pleasure of this masterpiece. The way things are today, you will be listening to this George Harrison album everywhere, as you will soon realize its significance and influence on past and present rock music.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest Spiritual Rock Album of All Time.......2007-06-03

You don't have to believe in God to fall in love with album, but it helps. Many of Harrison's wonderful songs are addressed directly to the Lord. George's classic hit My Sweet Lord is here, and the seasoned ear can determine for themselves whether or not he ripped off He's So Fine by the Chiffons (he didn't.) The Shy Beatle's gentle voice is wistful and spiritual, and Eric Clapton (uncredited, due to record label issues) tears up some elegiac and soulful guitar licks. Just beautiful. The last third of the album is pretty much take it or leave it. After a cohesive double album of spiritual, love, and playful songs, George rocks out on four long instrumental jams. I don't listen to them very often. But the bulk of the album is great. There is a wonderful cover of Dylan's If Not For You on disc one, as well as the classic What Is Life, featured in Goodfellas. The bonus songs new to this edition are also keepers, especially I Live For You, which is a beautiful song that fits in perfectly with the other tracks. Listen to this album and you'll dig love too.

5 out of 5 stars Reminiscing Spiritual Rock!.......2007-05-10

When George Harrison broke free from those other three clowns, it was the wisest thing he ever did! No longer constrained to "Papa Lennon," "Mama Mc.Cartney" or "Sibling Starr," his talent exploded and he could finally joyously chant the Hare Krsna Mantra with total freedom!

(I shouln't be so hard on Ringo! He played drums for Harrison on this album!)

This album has special meaning for me! In my 20's in Pocatello, Idaho, every spring I had a ritual. It didn't matter what vehicle I owned, whether the Volkswagen Beetle, the souped-up Javelin (Holy J) or the Firebird, I always had a killer audio system in it. The system evolved from 8 track to cassette. And I would drive that vehicle through the mountains on Cherry Creek road while blasting this album joyously! All Things Must Pass is so positive and uplifting!

Now I am 52, and my vehicle of choice is my Toyota Tacoma. My medium of choice is the iPod. My system of choice is a 700 watt Thump kicker, piped into two massive Polk Audio subwoofers, coupled into two huge horn tweeters in back of the extended cab! "EH....eh...:)"

And my album of choice to make all the drivers on their cell phones angry at me as I drive my commute is this album!

All I need to do now is to drive my truck back to Pocatello, on Cherry Creek Road to complete this glorious metamorphosis! While frying the truck's electrical system blasting All Things Must Pass to the world!

If you like rock and roll. You will love this one.

5 out of 5 stars Rockabilly All The Way - George Thorogood Style!.......2007-04-05

George Thorogood is one of my favorite all time rockers. The reason why is he was able to combine rock with a little bit of country. In essence: ROCKABILLY! I was raised in the South, but did not especially like a lot of country music. This CD has just the right amount of both Rock and Country music all in one great collection. I would not call it a greatest hits album, but most of George Thorogood's songs are on it. This is a must for your CD collection!

4 out of 5 stars RICK SHAQ GOLDSTEIN SAYS: "ALMOST GREAT TO THE BONE!".......2007-01-28

This is a great CD with some all-time classic Thorogood, slide guitar masterpieces. Such as "One Bourbon Once Scotch, One Beer", "Move It On Over:, Who Do You Love", "Bad To The Bone", and perhaps the most intelligent, "tongue in cheek" "drinking" rock song ever, "I Drink Alone"! And other songs. Why then would you ask, would Shaq "The King Of The World Blues Reviewer", give it 4 stars instead of 5? Because out of 16 songs about 4 of them are not all-time greats, so that is 25% of the songs, don't rate a 5 star grade. Hence, 4 star, still really good, and you should buy it.
