About the Artist
From an early age Jeff Marcomb has been drawn to a variety of music styles. First, picking up the sax in grade school and later moving on to the guitar. When he wasn't practicing long hours in his room, he would be programming on a Radio Shack Tandy 1000 PC. This proved to be great experience that would help him create, produce, and record his music today.

While attending Columbia College in Chicago, he spent most of his time in the rehearsal rooms sharpening his style, which is a fusion of smooth jazz/latin/pop textures. After playing a few years with local bands, Jeff decided to record a compilation of original works that he had been working on over the years. He setup in a small room with his trusty homemade computer, some guitars, and a keyboard and the resulting cd is Boundless.

The Kronos Quartet--apparently tired of performing some of the most riveting Western classical works composed in the last century--decided to take a vacation with Caravan. Where did they go? As evidenced by this globetrotting disc, seemingly everywhere. Music from the Middle East, South America, India, Portugal, and California (to name just a few) find their way onto this genre-blurring disc, along with a few surprises. They do a dizzying take on Dick Dale's "Miserlou," which we learn was originally written by Nicholas Roubanis in the '30s; perform a tune from India's bustling "Bollywood" film music industry; and tackle Terry Riley's inventive "Corgeo Funebre en el Monte Diablo"--the second movement of his Requiem for Adam (written for the late son of Kronos leader David Harrington). These are disparate but enthralling works that run the gamut from frenetic to reflective. Even though Caravan sounds less cohesive than Kronos's other world music foray, Pieces of Africa, this is still an enthralling collection and a must for Kronos fans. --Jason Verlinde

1 out of 5 stars unpleasant sounds.......2006-11-10

Kronos Caravan was a dissapointment and a waste of money. I can only stand to listen to two of the tracks. Most of the tracks are an annoying blend of too many strings and what ever instrument the guest artist is playing.I never want to listen to any of the music from the cultures represented on this cd.

5 out of 5 stars Another great Kronos.......2002-07-09

The positive part is that this is really good but I rank their last "Nuevo" higher because that one holds togheter better.

This is mostly middle eastern/central europe stuff and even if I THINK I know way some argentinian/portuguise tracks are in this (because of that argentininan tango has it roots in middle europe.. portugal cobining bandelon with portuguese fado) it feels misplaced here but artisticially it is very good performed anyway and... hows about "Miserlou Twist" then.. well composer of that old hit has his roots in Libanon so.. :-).

Anyway is this very good, fun, well played and sound, production is also something extra.

You be pleased with this if you like stringquartets with more of a folklore style but my advice is that you by this togheter with Nuevo then you have two great great discs.

People used to Kronos cooperation with Glass, Steve Riech should like this but it is def. NOT minimalism att all.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning.......2000-11-19

I've never been a fan of classical music. Being forced to listen to Mozart and such growing up in school, ugh, school has made me gain a deep hatred of famous classical composers and the like. Never thought I would ever get into classical music because it was all killed to me.

Then I heard of Kronos Quartet. They were raved about on a movie review for "Requiem for a Dream," which they are mostly responsible for the entire score on. So, I decided to give them a bit of a chance. I bought three of their albums, "Early Music," and "Kronos Quartet performs Phillip Glass." The most important of all of these is "Caravan."

The last CD I listened to, I was a little afraid to, because I figured I'd enjoy Western pieces a little more, and probably wouldn't like the more 'world' sound this album seems to say it has.

I couldn't have been more wrong, from the opening track, "Pannoia Boundless," I was in love, raving about it to everyone I knew. Every track seems to have an energy that oozes from within it, these dynamics that manage to grab me and toss me around every time. Even the weakest track, being "Cortejo Funebre en el Monte Diablo," because of the horribly synth-sounding beats, horns, and bells, still has a certain power after you get past the horrible intro of the song.

Either way, Kronos Caravan is a great listen for anyone just dabbling in classical string quartets and wants something a little more high power and intrusive than your average "background music."

2 out of 5 stars And they never stepped off the train..........2000-07-22

According to the press and liner notes, this album is intended to chart a sort of musical journey, obviously reflected by the title. Such a concept is highly suspect - eclecticism for its own sake (or more likely for the sake of capturing the widest consumer base) very rarely leads to meaningful, cohesive art, possibly because the best art comes "from within", that is, from within an individual's or a group's experience, not simply the surface reflection of ethnic stereotypes. Add to this the antequated notion that a caucasian string quartet can "capture" the world's sounds for YOUR discerning ears, and you have a piece of sheer mediocrity.

Osvaldo Golijov's arrangements excel at highlighting various effects of instrumental combinations. That's a plus. However, these performances are mostly shorn of whatever vitality is inherent in the compositions, by the quartet's lack of rhythmic unity and attack - some of these takes sound like tentative rehearsals. The worst in this respect has to be "Aaj Ki Raat". Anyone who knows Indian film music is aware of its energy and manic quality. This performance, however, has none of that, opting instead for a navel-gazing lack of dynamism that actually serves to bury the melodic theme, in lieu of which we are given the sound of tablas, which even Zakir Hussain can't make jive with the ennervated ensemble.

Not surprisingly, the only impassioned performance is "Turceasca", likely because most of the music is played by Taraf de Haidouks, a Romanian Gypsy ensemble that lends its "quaint" and "primitive" spunk to the tastemaker quartet, producing a "rousing, olde country" stewe.

Anyone with an interest in music beyond her/his borders should pick up the real thing, spend a little money, force her/himself to get used to its strangeness, and maybe she/he will come away a little wiser. Oh, yes, purchase an honest classical disc next time, as well.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful!.......2000-07-13

This CD is great in many ways. There is beatiful music from all over the world on this one. It's interesting 'cause it's rather easy listened, but still very deep and vital. "Pannonia Boundless" and "Turceasca" was the first two tracks to capture me. After that you discover the beauty of the other tracks. The themes of the songs are very clear and they work fine both as headphone-music as background-music. Get this one!

4 out of 5 stars Absolutely fantastic, but..........2005-06-10

Though being a professional singer, I've only recently discovered Samuel Barber's songs. I'm glad I did it, because Barber wrote some of the most beautiful art-songs I've ever heard in my life. From the earliest to the latest song, it's all pure quality, with few - if any - exceptions.
This recording is a great acquisition, not only for the fact that it includes *all* the songs Barber wrote, but also for Thomas Hampson's magnificent and moving performance.
Unfortunately, the female singer (Cheryl Studer) almost manages to completely spoil this pleasant experience: her artificial, dull, often-completely-out-of-tune (?) singing is the reason for my 4 out of 5 rating. Otherwise, it would definitely be a five star recording.

5 out of 5 stars Well,its about time!.......2002-04-05

Finaly,a compleat edition of these wonderfull songs by this wonderfull and sadly underrated composer.
The songs are varied and span the composers entire creative years.
They range from the romantic,child-like youth compositions(the daisies)threu his almost brahms sounding period( sleep now, nocturn, sure on this shining night)to his tragic, disenchanted
older years.
The hermit songs&the French ones are a particular delight. We all know just how wonderfull Hampson is ,but Studer is also fine & pure sounding-A total joy!

5 out of 5 stars The best song-CD EVER released! etc........2000-04-16

I'm not even kidding. This really is the best song-CD ever released. Don't laugh until you hear it... then you'll see for yourself. Where to begin! Barber-- his orchestral works are great for the most part, the Knoxville setting for Orchestra and soprano is mediocre, the piano sonata is also great BUT: the heart of this composer is in his songs. And here they ALL are, including the 10 unpublished songs from his youth. There's Nae Lark is one of only three songs I've ever heard that made me burst into tears on FIRST listening... Barber was around 17 when he wrote it! Bessy Bobtail could make a person drop dead in the right mood. The Joyce settings are so true to the poet's intentions! And the final 3 songs...especially A Green Lowland of Pianos show that Barber NEVER EVER lost his musical voice and razor-sharp talent. This compilation also includes the sincere and depressing On Dover Beach setting-- few if any composers besides Barber have ever managed a successful setting of Arnold's multilayered poem. OK... what if you don't like Thomas Hampson... I know there are some out there who think he's an odd singer... too much rubato, too much bravura? I promise you, you'll like him here, you may even grow to love the guy... if Hampson's ever been sincere and if there's ever been a composer whose music is well suited to his voice, it's Barber...guaranteed. I think this compilation also proves (ok, arguably, I'll admit) that complex tonal song settings pose many more compositional challenges than any of the atonal song-music produced in this century. I can't think of any atonal composer outside of Webern who could shake a stick at the harmonic ingenuity of Barber here. (Just so lightning doesn't strike me... Sir Michael Tippett is also a fine song composer, but he's NEVER been atonal, just EXTENDED tonal.) Barber, Barber, Barber... buy this now. These songs are so powerful that I can remember as vividly as yesterday exactly where and when I first heard every one of these songs and what I was feeling... they quite literally imprinted themselves in my mind. Don't cheat yourself out of this experience... buy this now!

5 out of 5 stars A Complete Joy.......1999-12-01

When I bought this record I had not heard any of the Barber songs before, but what a pleasant surprise they proved to be. These are beautiful romantic songs, and Studer and Hampson perform them very well. The recording sound is also very good. Warmly recommended.

Keyboardist Scott Wilkie's debut recording is an agreeable collection of melodic, pop-jazz ensemble pieces that are hospitable almost to a fault. Wilkie's upbeat, eager-to-please approach serves nearly every selection sunny-side up, and the prevailing cheerfulness makes more-subdued pieces, such as the piano-focused "Reverie" and "Song for Shari," welcome respites. Still, it's hard to fault Wilkie's intentions, and when he chooses to bypass electric keyboards (which sound a bit dated at times) or remembers to lock the saxophonists out of the studio, his compositions rise a notch above standard smooth-jazz fare. Guitar-supported tracks, such as "Nothing Yet" and "Poolside," are among this disc's better offerings. Guest players include Russ Freeman, Nathan Brown, and John Patitucci. --Terry Wood

5 out of 5 stars Scott's the MAN.......2001-11-09

Notice that all reviewers are raving about this guy? Notice that there are none of his CDs for sale used? We have all discovered this gem in the confluence of "smooth jazz" and for me it remains my most beloved of the hundreds of jazz CDs I have acquired over the years. No formulaic compositions here, and most notably, live crisp drums replacing the ever so routine and annoying drum machines that permeate smooth jazz radio formats. Funky, mellow, danceable, thought-provoking - a style and melodly to fit every mood - completely. And this guy can play - like the Warren Hill or Earl Klugh of his instrument, in compositions of astounding harmonic and rhythmic layers and variations; music that thankfully reassures the listener in these uncertain times. For the second most played CD in my collection, I wear out his other gem, More Than You Know. I hope you take a chance and bring this sensitive musician into your home and heart.

5 out of 5 stars I can't wait for the next cd to be released next year!.......1999-10-27

This music contains all the elements that made me love the ENTIRE cd the very first time I heard it. The rhythms are hot and driving on some cuts, but soulful and sweet on others. It's obvious that each musician plays with a personal passion because it shows through the music. The songs are original and arrangements are brilliant.

5 out of 5 stars The most exciting keyboard player in comtemporary jazz?.......1999-10-25

This is one of those albums you loan to friends who then rush off and buy it. Scott has a melodic attack that energizes most of these tunes yet he can summon up the ghost of Bill Evans for the more lyrical pieces. I recently caught him playing at a small bar (never heard of him before) and loved the animated way he crouched over and hammered amazing riffs and runs from his keyboards. Scott also played previews from his upcoming album that sounded great. On this first album he manages to steer clear of enough of the tired "smooth jazz" cliches to place himself outside of the circle. This is riffy/rocky/ funk/jazz with original breakneck improvising from Scott, Matthew Van Doren (watch that name too) the rhythm section and guests. Wilkie is more fun to watch and listen to than any of his contemporaries - "big" names included - and could have an exceptional career developing if he can continue to move away from the crowd.

5 out of 5 stars Great new artist!.......1999-05-06

Funky and hip! I've only had "Boundless" for a short time (recommended to me by a friend), and it is already a favorite CD in my collection. The production is flawless, and some of my favorite musicians are included. I'm looking forward to more recordings from Scott. Great stuff!

5 out of 5 stars Contemporary jazz with great chops and arrangements..........1999-04-19

I just picked up the debut CD, "Boundless", from accomplished jazz keyboardist Scott Wilkie right here at Amazon.com. I've known Scott since 1984 (we're both alumni of the Detroit r&b/jazz scene), so I knew to expect a wonderfully-produced CD of very musical, tightly arranged songs. The CD actually exceeded my already high expectations. There is something on Boundless for every contemporary jazz fan, from energetic, funky grooves ("Sporty!", "Sailcats"), to more introspective, melodic tunes (i.e., "Rivertown", and the solo piano "Reverie").

ALL aspiring keyboardists (and jazz players/listeners in general) will want this CD for three reasons: (1) The chord comping and overall arrangements (very innovative use of sounds, voicings, passing chords and dynamics); (2) The solos (the clavinet solo on "Those" is amazing...if you're a player, it alone makes the CD worth the price!); (3) The sounds and production - incredibly clean, with tight bass/drum tracks, wonderful saxophone tone/interplay, and outstanding percussion. The piano (much of it David Benoit's 7'5" grand) and other keyboards are also outstanding.

Scott is a rare exception in today's jazz keyboard world. He is a superb player, writer, arranger and performer (check out his stage presence and obvious love for live playing when The Scott Wilkie band comes your way). Scott's playing reminds me of a unique cross between Joe Sample and Jeff Lorber - but with his own signature. What puts Scott in the "rare exception" category, though, is his technical/production skill. Unlike many top performers, Scott is also very accomplished in the technical arena. A MIDI/digital production virtuoso with extensive background as a Roland Keyboards product specialist, he produces and assists in the mixdown of all his material - recorded over a two year period at his own state-of-the-art facility and other L.A. area studios.

Joining Scott and bandmates Matthew Von Doran (guitars), Nathan Brown (bass) and David Owens (drums) on "Boundless" are a host of other top flight studio musicians. Saxophonist Jeff Kashiwa, guitarists Paul Jackson Jr. and Russ Freeman, reknowned bassist John Patitucci (as in Chick Corea's Electric Band), percussionist Steve Reid and others all contribute significantly to the CD.

In short, this one gets my vote for "Best New Artist of 1999" in the contemporary jazz category. Check "Boundless" out for yourself...you won't be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars Not What I Expected, But Still An Excellent, Inspirational Album.......2007-02-18

When I saw the "Women of Faith" series, for some reason I thought these were compilation projects by several Christian female vocalists such as Twila Paris, Margaret Becker, Point Of Grace, etc. I discovered that it really is a worship band on its own.

Does this mean that this is not a good project? No. It is worshipful, especially for someone who loves hearing female vocalists like myself.

This project includes a cover of "I Could Sing Of Your Love Forever" (originally done by Billy Sprague, but also done by Sonicflood). There are three other titles that sound like hymns: "How Great Thou Art", "Jesus Lover Of My Soul", and "Love Lifted Me." The first is the hymn, the second is not, and the third contains the hymn's chorus, but has new verses with new music.

My favorites include "Lord Most High", "Let's Think About Our God", "Boundless Love", "Celebrate The Lord Of Love", "Hear Our Praises", and "How Great Thou Art".

5 out of 5 stars Uplifting and encouraging music.......2002-09-16

The Women of Faith praise team has put together a wonderful CD. Whether they are singing upbeat songs such as "Your Love For Me" and "Boundless Love" or the more contemplative "Hear Our Praises" or "Jesus Lover of My Soul", these women sing straight to the heart. They remind us that the basis of the Christian faith is the faithful and everlasting love of Jesus Christ. This CD is a great encouragement and helps to strengthen and renew the faith of the listener.

    5 out of 5 stars Great CD!.......2001-05-23

This CD is good. Another great CD is "A Woman's Journey" with various artists like Brenda Nicholas. You Will Be Encouraged.

    5 out of 5 stars Exceptionally Good.......2003-09-22

I have not enjoyed a choral recording this much is a long time. Billings is such a fine composer and the performances here are wonderful. Unlike most recordings of this kind, it was not done in either a huge church or a studio but in a smaller, chapel-like setting, the kind of place I imagine people would have been singing Billing when he was writing. This gives it a wonderful quality. It's nice to know there is now another excellent Billings CD along with Paul Hillier's. I also read that this is a concert recording; this may give it a certain lack of "perfection" in terms of the singing always being "just so" and some extraneous sounds, but being live also gives the performances a real immediacy and presence.

1 out of 5 stars Poor sound, poor recording.......2002-12-26

A bad, amateur recording. Although it is a live concert recording, it has bad sound quality. The chorus is also not very clean in its performance--tuning, it seems, is a problem as a rule rather than exception, not to mention extremely messy entrances and cutoffs. Billings has a lot of fun music, but this is one recording that should be avoided.

    5 out of 5 stars Simply beautiful.......2001-12-15

William Billings has always been so underrated, but this recording should help rectify that. Though it was released a few years ago I just discovered it and am thoroughly impressed by the repertoire, the recording and especially the beautiful performances. I can only imagine how gratified Billings himself would have been to hear this. And it was recorded on his 250th birthday!

    5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary.......2000-01-26

I have performed many of these works with professional and amateur groups, and this is simply the best Billings I have ever heard. It strikes the perfect balance between the raw energy and directness of this wonderful early American music and the skill and refinement of great choral singing. There are real adventures here as well, with several pieces, I believe, being given their premiere recording, like the unusual New Boston/Hingham and the simply beautiful Mourn, Mourn in Billings's final version. Appling is a tremendous conductor, and what is really remarkable is that this is a live performance. Most groups need many studio takes to do what this group did in one.

    2 out of 5 stars A mediocre, amateur recording.......1999-07-12

This recording is completely amateur in ev'ry way. Choral entrances tend to be sloppy, the choral blend is mediocre, and the singing is completely uninspired. The recording itself sounds like somebody happened to show up at the performance with a couple of microphones and a tape deck, so they thought: What the heck, let's stash the microphones, oh, how about over here, and make a recording.

For real excellence, try the one by Paul Hillier and company.

      5 out of 5 stars A faithful musical rendition of Gogol's novel.......2003-07-30

I am a huge fan of Gogol's early works, especially his novel Taras Bulba. Gliere's musical interpretation is engaging and faithful to the spirit of Ukrainian nationalism. Track 3 is romantic and lyrical.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful and Exciting.......2000-01-08

Hobart Earle and the Odessa Philharmonic clearly love to play Ukrainian music.
