Impact Press, June-July 2004
"...the instrumental smooth jazz tracks sound as tight as they can be. This is Sunday afternoon relaxing music."
Product Description
A unique instrumental combination of smooth jazz, new age, and progressive rock, with nods to classical and celtic just for fun. This album features guitar on most songs, backed by an arsenal of drums and percussion, keyboards, bass, and rhythm guitar.
Well thought out song forms and a variety of tempos and feels make for an interesting album throughout. Not just looped grooves under a 4 minute solo, the drum parts were carefully crafted to create a unique feel for each song. Likewise, the guitar parts were conceived with an emphasis on originality, feel and taste, and not on flash (although some may have leaked in anyway!). Need a more concrete reference - think of Eric Johnson's instrumentals with a more orchestrated rhythm section. Great for driving, studying, relaxing, or as background music.
Amelia
Amelia,Via Cora,Cyclorama Records,Amelia is an unusual instrumental album that walks a fine line between new age and smooth jazz.

Excellent Introduction to Spanish Classical Guitar Music.......2005-09-18
As a sampler, this CD is an excellent introduction both to Spanish classical guitar music and to guitarist John Williams.
The music ranges from Renaissance composers (Sanz, Mudarra) and harmonized folk melodies to standard 20th Century works (Rodrigo, Torroba etc).
John Williams is excellent throughout. The CD is also cheap, and can be used either just for enjoyment, or further to explore other recordings by Williams, the classical guitar repertoire, or other classical guitarists.
As a marketing ploy, it is very effective.
For the collector or classical guitar enthusiast, the chief disadvantages of the CD are duplication of other recordings, and that the way at least some of the works on this CD are listed isn't helpful in telling the listener the set(s) to which these pieces belong and how to find them (e.g. "from ______, Op # "). The font listing the titles and track numbers is small and somewhat hard to read.
However, this CD should attract many listeners and enthusiasts both to the classical guitar, the repertoire, and guitarist John Williams - and I'm all for that.
Over 70 minutes playing time.
Recommended.
The guitar is an orchestra in miniature!.......2005-02-05
This admirable concept belongs to Hector Berlioz and it must not be a surprise the best guitarrists in the story have in common this trademark.
John Williams has always known the delicate equilibrium between the expresiveness and the glamouer. His impresive technique however is not exposed as his prima edonna. He goes directly to the soul of the composer, melts in his spirit and let the music sharp the qith eloquent conviction the composer's demanded atmosphere.
From Granados to Albeniz, from Rodrigo to Agustin Barrios - El indio Mangore -, from Moreno Torroba to Ponce , you will find the warmth, the passion and the Midas touch of this golden guitarrist.
GUITAR MAJESTY.......2004-12-21
John Williams is a true Guitar virtuoso. His repetoire is very extensive and I use his music in my office while I work at my daily office duties. This album is a must for all guitar enthusiasts old or young.
Sweet, sweet music, an essential addition to your collection.......2004-12-07
I originally bought this album three years ago, looking for a good introduction to Spanish guitar music. And this one fits that need perfectly. I still listen to and enjoy it today. I play this for guests at happy hour or dinner for a relaxed atmosphere. At Amazon's current price, this is a great value.
A True Classic.......2004-01-26
This album/cd is extraordinary. All the songs are gorgeous and exciting to listen to. John Williams' interpretation and technique are perfect. After 22 years of listening to it, I still enjoy and appreciate it more every time. I love giving it as a gift.

This classic disc has been the prime recommendation for Barber's short orchestral pieces since the early 1960s. Remastered onto CD for the first time, and with the addition of some other items conducted by Thomas Schippers, it sounds better than ever. All of Barber's music is blessed with the virtues of impeccable craftsmanship, tunefulness, and, above all, brevity. Although a Romantic by temperament, Barber had the gift of being able to fit a lot of emotional impact into a very small space. The famous Adagio for Strings and the Second Essay actually sound much bigger than they are, but they don't go on a second too long--which means you can play them again right away! You'll want to. --David Hurwitz
Amazon.com
The most beautiful recording ever made of the Adagio for Strings is at last on CD, thoughtfully coupled with some of the other recordings the young Thomas Schippers made for Columbia Masterworks--of the music of Barber and others--between 1960 and 1965, at the start of his all-too-brief career. Although he was never on personal terms with Barber, Schippers had the ability to put Barber's music across in just the right way, with the perfect blend of energy and lyricism, toughness and warmth, and, above all, the feeling that its sentiment was real, yet ineffably contained. The performance of the New York Philharmonic (in the Adagio, as well as in the Second Essay for Orchestra, the Overture to the School for Scandal, Andromache's Farewell, and Medea's Dance of Vengeance) is aglow with inspiration, and the sound is exceptionally vivid, with a palpable sense of presence and space. --Ted Libbey
Customer Reviews:
A sparkling remaster.......2006-12-29
This disc showcases a spectrum of talent from the young Schippers before his tragic death. However, contrary to the other reviews, this is not the best version of the "Adagio" that I have ever heard. The other tracks on the disc are a nice complement and some are hard to find on CD. All in all, a decent buy.
Great music and a great package.......2006-11-10
This reissue of material conducted by Thomas Schippers shows the great style he had conducting Barber's (and Menotti's) work. This CD has been reissued again with a more mundane package as part of the RCA red seal releases. This disc presents background information and pictures that are a delight to the collector and will interest the listener new to this music. Its sound is good for its age and packages material together very well.
An American Classic.......2005-12-03
Like many of the other reviewers, I owned this recording as an LP. Listening to it again in the CD format was a wonderful experience. Barber's lyrical gift was extraordinary. "Romantic" is an inadequate word to describe his music. And it sounds peculiarly American, like Copland's. You can't imagine that a European could have written it. It has too much freedom and sparkle, too much yearning and openess. My only criticism is that this disc omits "Knoxville: Summer of 1915", which I recall was on the old LP, with Leontyne Price as the soloist. Thomas Schippers seems to have been the ideal interpreter of this composer. What a pity that he died young.
Best of Barber.......2004-09-30
The cover and Barber performances come from one of my favorite LPs - an old Odyssey release from the 70s. (Having worn one down, I was lucky to find a new one at a second-hand store - and soon after the CD was, finally, released.) Needless to say, I've listened to these performances frequently but never tire of them. Schippers, who was a close protege of Barber's (his lover?), infuses all of the Barber orchestral pieces with enormous vitality and emotion. The Adagio is one of the two or three best (if not THE best) on record, and the Medea Meditation and Dance of Vengeance is a knockout, more forceful even than Barber's own recording of the music in the Medea Suite for Mercury in the 50s. The School for Scandal Overture is a rollicking and tuneful delight, and the Second Essay is superbly done. My only objection is the CD is a rather scatter-shot collection, a massing culled from the handful of recordings Schippers made for Columbia in the early '60s. The sound is fine, but I'd sure love to hear an SACD version of this recording.
Is there anything to add...?.......2003-09-26
Is there anything to add to the string of glowing reviews of this CD? Perhaps not but I feel an obligation as it has been part of my life since I first bought it in 1967--and wore out several LP versions of it. The combination of composition, interpretation, playing, and engineering of the Barber pieces is unparalleled in my experience; each must be considered as definitive. I particularly favor the Second Essay which comes across as a major work of it era and should appear in concert more often. The contibution by Martina Arroyo is just an extra added attraction in this extended compilation. Legendary!

Customer Reviews:
Great chestnut, thankfully re-released!.......2007-01-04
I first heard of Plainsong not, as most listeners probably did, as a fan of Iain Matthews' Southern Comfort/ Fairport Convention, but actually through Andy Roberts' later-70's collaboration with the legendary Roy Harper as a guitarist in his band and live accompanist. After hearing this album, I'm glad I went to the trouble to track it down.
The first disc, Plainsong's only official album, is the more together of the two--Plainsong's sound is typified by beautiful, flowing, clear vocal harmonies (Matthews has such a smooth voice!), their excellent selection of covers (from the title Earhart tune to folk and country standards to more obscure gems like Paul Siebel's "Louise," Gene Clark's "Spanish Guitar" and Henske/Yester's "Raider"), and their expert blending of country, rock, folk, and even a touch of psychedelia, using acoustic and electric instrumentation like slide guitar and dulcimer.
On the first disc, it's pretty easy to distinguish Matthew's self-penned songs from the covers, but it doesn't really take away from the album's flow. Matthews' tunes like "For the Second Time," and "Side Roads" are often the album's quieter moments, although "Even The Guiding Light" is one of the album's harder-rocking moments. "Yo-yo Man" and "Diesel on My Tail" lighten the mood (maybe a little more than necessary), and the pair of Earhart songs present two different stories of the famous aviator--a romanticized hero's tale, and a melancholy lament about what was more likely her actual, uglier end. The bonus tracks range from OK to very good, with a couple medium-caliber originals and some more well-chosen covers ("Seeds and Stems" is great weepy stoner country). I really have to hand it to Plainsong and Matthews for their eclecticism--these two discs have quite a broad range of great country songs as well as more obscure classics. The only drawback with Plainsong's one and only album is that at times it seems a little too polished--the vocals are so smooth, the production so clean that sometimes the music floats by without creating as much of an impression based on unique personality as it might. Regardless, how many British bands made this genuine, reverent country rock in the 70's that actually sounded this good?
The second disc, containing Plainsong's second, unreleased album, "Now We Are 3," and a great live set, is much less essential than the first disc. Really, I like to think of it as more of an entire bonus disc. "Now We Are 3" finds the band tinkering with their sound in some ways that don't really work as well (saxophone?), but also continuing to blend originals with some great covers. Unfortunately, this time around, the originals (although aided by Roberts on a few) just aren't as good, and many of the covers don't sound as heartfelt. Perhaps it was Matthews' growing plans to leave the band (check out the liner notes, that also have a lot of info about the artists Plainsong covered), or a bit of writers' block, but the spark that lit up the first album isn't as bright here. The live set is great, though, offering different versions of many of their signature songs, and "Along Came Mary" at the end is pretty enjoyable.
All in all, I heartily recommend this economically-priced twofer for fans of straight up country, country rock like the Byrds and Gram Parsons, and also for fans of Matthews and British folk rock. There's a lot to enjoy here for fans of both folk and rock, and it just might get you more interested in country. Hopefully it also gets you interested in some of the amazing artists that are covered here, especially cult legend Paul Siebel and psych-folk Judy Hensky/Jerry Yester.
Five Full Stars for a four-piece.......2006-10-02
This is a wonderful reissue and hats off to the WATER label for making such a wonderful expanded release available.
'In Search of AH' is an album I discovered in 1976 during a time when I was spending two or three nights a week at CBGB's. The fact that this gently masterful album captured my heart is testament to its transcendence. The group's second album remained unreleased as Elektra Records President Jac Holzmann convinced Ian Matthews to pursue a solo career. The unimaginatively-titled 'Now We Are 3' did not build on all the strengths of the debut; the wonderful (almost) Abbey Road-like production touchs and haunting guitar lines gave way to a more orthodox mix of folky and country material, but it is nonetheless a wonderful album. A few of the songs went on to grace Matthews solo albums.
The live and BBC bonus material is fine and it's fun to hear the single version of Guiding Light and Along Comes Mary.
I really can't recommend this album highly enough... anyone who might think it's up their alley will be very satisfied.
Astonishing and Important.......2005-12-10
I apologize for the seeming hyperbole, but this is truly an important and special release: WOW! Ian Matthews joined this group briefly before launching a full-fledged solo career in the early 70s, but what a mark they left! This is intelligent, inspired, music for the soul -- as vital as if they recorded it last week rather than 30 or so years ago.
The entire song cycle regarding Amelia Earhart is simply brilliant, as are the pitch-perfect and tight versions of "Yo-Yo Man," "Old Man at the Mill," "I'll Fly Away," "Save Your Sorrows," or the many other fantastic tunes on this disk. Marrying thoughtful, sweet lead vocals over tight harmonies, surrounded by inspired rock, folk, country, bluegrass, and cosmic-cowboy stylings, this was music way ahead of time. We've finally caught up.
consistently good, but not exceptional.......2005-12-04
Plainsong continued Iain Matthew's forays into country rock and roots music, after he had abandoned Matthews Southern Comfort.
As band member Andy Roberts notes in this reissue's booklet, Matthews had a comprehensive knowledge of both American and English roots music, and many fine old 'chestnuts' are covered in this 2 cd package, alongside some memorably good songs written by Matthews himself.
With Plainsong, Matthews seemed to be aiming at a middle-of-the-road country rock sound, with pop overtones. At times Plainsong can sound like America, the Eagles, early 70's Hollies, John Denver, Mason Proffit, and many other bands of the period. A few tunes ("The Old Man and the Mill", "Raider") recall Matthews first band, Fairport Convention.
Matthews has a slight, pleasant tenor voice which can seem sweetly bland--he always sounds the same. Roberts, the other mainstay of the band, comes across vocally as a cross between Harry Chapin and John Denver. The instrumental backing is very good, particularly Dave Richards thudding, melodic bass playing, which helps the band to rock a little harder.
All in all this is a nice, wholesome-sounding band that chose to play mostly excellent material (John Hartford, Utah Phillips, Richard Thompson, Gene Clark) with only a few missteps ("Seeds and Stems"?). Very solid, but nothing groundbreaking. At two discs with two hours of music, it is worth the asking price.
5 Stars is not enough!!!.......2005-08-03
Great to see one of my all time favorite albums re-issued in this wonderful two cd set. Ian Matthews at his best in this short lived group. Too bad Elektra convenced him to move to the US and become a solo artist, leaving the group hanging with a second album already in the can. This band could have been a major contender in the folk rock genre. The unreleased LP is here along with a selection of live, radio and demo cuts. These recordings are so well done, great choice of originals and cover tunes done in tasteful folk-rock arrangements. I bought the original LP in a cut out bin for .99 cents in the mid seventies, the best buck I ever spent! A desert island selection for sure! Hats off to Water for superb, justice doing re-issue!

Essential listening for the guitar lover.......2006-02-11
Pepe Romero's tribute to his late father Celedonio is not only a beautiful celebration of the life of one of the most important guitarists ever, but a great triumph simply on the merits of the pieces presented and the performances thereof. Of particular interest are the heartfelt renderings of transcriptions of piano works by Schumann, Brahms, Schubert and Chopin; while the Romero family has always taken pains to make sure the world has the opportunity to enjoy the riches of the Spanish guitar repetoire, Pepe's beautiful performances of the transcriptions referred to above allow him to display the full breadth of his musical understanding. Wonderful!
Brilliant.......2001-02-17
I can't add too much to what as already been said in praise of this wonderful CD. Pepe is brilliant. I recently saw him in concert and his confidence with the instrument blew me away. I have never seen such confident, fluid, beautiful movement on the classical guitar. And it comes out in the music.
Emotionally stunning, technically flawless, Pepe is the best and this is my favorite classical guitar record.
For the love of a father, and of the music they shared.......2000-01-25
This CD, a collection of songs that Pepe Romero learned from and shared with his father, is a finely, wonderfully, lovingly crafted work evoking in the listener the emotions that the music brings to Mr. Romero. They are all songs played not as displays of technical skill, though the skill is impressive, but as celebrations of the joy and love that music and relationships can bring. Ranging from pieces by Bach to Pepe's father, Celedonio, there isn't a clinker in the bunch, and much to be savored sweetly on a sunny morning with a coffee in hand.
The greatest guitarist in the world. This CD again shows why!.......1999-03-21
An inspiring, emotional tribute of repertory taught to Pepe Romero by his late father, Celedonio, who himself was an incredible guitarist and composer. Flawless technique, combined with Spanish heart and soul, set a standard for all other guitarists to emulate. Repertory ranges from beginning guitar pieces to flamenco-inspired pieces by his father. Also includes everything from Bach, Brahms, and Chopin to Spanish composer Moreno Torroba.
His best solo CD yet!.......1999-03-21
Pepe Romero is perhaps the most gifted guitarist living today, and it shows with this CD. A long time fan, I'm a little biased, but I would absolutely recommend this CD to any fan of the classic guitar. And it has a great and unusual variety of music. Great for beginning listeners.

The most noble voice.......2004-05-28
Victoria de los Angeles' voice not only has a silken quality and fascinating glow to it but it is one of the most regal, noble sounds you'll ever hear. She illuminated those moments of quietness, gentleness and noble, feminine pride and elegance like no other soprano before and after her. This release of her "Spanish Songs" has never been surpassed. The songs of her homeland seem to have been written for her beautiful instrument alone, she fills every piece with special beauty and charm, religious flair and beautiful, noble simplicity. Buy this recording and see why Victoria is one of the best sopranos ever having come from Spain.
PURCHASE THIS JEWEL WHILE YOU CAN.......2002-01-08
FOR A LONG TIME "SONGS OF SPAIN" HAS BEEN MY FAVORITE ALBUM OF CLASSICAL, POPULAR, SECULAR AND RELIGIOUS (CHRISTIAN AND SEPHARDIC) SPANISH SONGS. DE LOS ANGELES DEFIES A RIVAL IN THIS GENRE. DE LARROCHA, SORIANO AND ZANETTI PROVIDE UNEQUALED ACCOMPANIEMENTS. THE RECORDINGS ARE SECOND ONLY TO LIFE PERFORMANCES. I UNDERSTAND THAT EMI INTENDS TO TAKE THIS SET OUT OF PUBLICATION. PURCHASE THIS JEWEL WHILE YOU CAN! I JUST PURCHASED MY THIRD SET FROM AMAZON AND I TREASURE IT AS MUCH AS MY FIRST!
luminous artistry from a genius.......2000-12-26
the vocal artist of vocal artistsdisplays her absolutely gorgeous voice and musical understanding of spanish feeling with a warmth that is unmatched anywhere.the only thing better was to hear her in person!
A special Dignity and an Unfailing Beauty of Voice........2000-09-17
This set offers four generously-filled CDs comprising almost 140 Spanish songs from Victoria de los Angeles' repertoire. To all of them she brings a special dignity and an unfailing beauty of voice. The earliest recordings date from 1950 and the last is the items she sang at the opening of the Barcelona Olympics in 1992. Yes, you will find the ubiquitous "Clavelitos!" here, and a later version of "La maya el ruisenor" from "Goyescas". The enclosed booklet provides illuminating notes by Lionel Salter, who also translated many of the texts which are also included. Accompanists include Gerald Moore and Alicia de Larrocha, and Victoria de Los Angeles provides a guitar accompaniment herself in one song. The last track of all, a zapateado from a zarzuela, recorded live in New York, must almost have brought the house down.

The classical heritage .......2006-04-16
The visible embellishment of this noble instrument was enriched still more by the Spanish composers, who following the traces of his contemporaries. In the case of Fernando Sor, Haydn was his musical guide, where as Aguado, could establish himself with major vehemence, due its particular style, based in the notable right-hand articulation, eschewed the classical patterns, being able to print his own music a flamboyant and refined character.
In the particular case of Fernando Sor, we have a wisdom blending of the counterpoint technique, an evocative mood from his own that, added the well known influence of the Italian composers (Domenico Cimarrosa and Giovanni Batista Pergolesi) and his beloved love for the Operatic genre, allowed him to enrich still more the lyrical possibilities of the guitar. Besides, unlike Nicolo Paganini, for instance fortunately did not transform the guitar in a simple device to show his overwhelming gifts. He used the guitar to play music, on the opposite approach of Paganini who used the music as mere device to play his instrument.
In the guitar genre there has not been most deserved and superb tribute to Mozart that this Variations Op. 9 based on a motive of The most famous Mozart ?s Magic Flute. Loaded of such imaginative freshness and enraptured inspiration you may notice that one of the Variations conserves an undeniable Italian flavor; this is one of the most beloved hidden treasures the guitar can offers us, which raise with special charm in the hands of this formidable soloist.
Aguado on the contrary acquired due his personal state of things, a notable adroitness who excelled by far, to Sor, so his musical approaches rode in opposite directions, trying to exploit at maximum levels the technical possibilities of the instrument.
Julian Bream makes a colossal tribute to both composers in this egregious and golden album.

A Review of Classical Guitar- Terry Muska.......2000-04-15
One of my favorite instruments to listen to is the classical guitar. I currently have all of Terry Muska's CDs in my collection. These CDs are relaxing and inspiring and I often listen to them when I am drawing or webdesigning.
Beautiful work, Terry!

Check out Amelia's Dream.......2006-07-08
I was stoked to hear the Amelia's Dream song while watching the movie, so I am glad to see a soundtrack where people can sample their music. Amelia's Dream is a husband/wife team from NYC, and their three previously released CD's (that can be bought on cdbaby.com) are really excellent pieces of work. Amelia's voice is extraordinary. Check them out!
