For Lorraine Rousseau & Robert Carlton, music has always been a way of life. As husband and wife, they have devoted their lives to creating and performing finely-crafted "New Acoustic" Instrumental Music. Lorraine & Robert have created four exceptional CDs: It’s a Mystery, A Christmas Wish, Acoustic Café and Visionary World. Receiving critical acclaim and extensive radio airplay across North America and Europe, Rousseau & Carlton have struck a chord with listeners by creating evocatively beautiful compositions and arrangements that defy musical categorization.

Visionary World has a pure clarity of sound and musical finesse that was recorded on two inch analog tape and mixed down onto half inch tape at Inception Sound(Toronto) by Juno award winner Chad Irschick (engineer for Loreena McKinnett...). Rousseau & Carlton collaborated on songwriting and arranging with the award winning composer, Chris Dedrick, (president of the Canadian Film Composers Guild and member of the groups "The Free Design" and the "Star-Scape Singers", with conducting/arranging/recording credits for many artists, including Melissa Manchester, Kenny Loggins, and Simon & Garfunkel with James Taylor.) The original CD cover art was created by leading Los Angeles graphic designer, Raj Naik. Forty five minutes of music in total.

Smooth, sensous, soothing, and sultry. A couple of cuts a little on the "loungy" side but overall this is an excellent CD that delivers exactly what you would expect from the title. The quality of this stuff is definitely a cut above a lot of the other budda-lounge wannabes.

A maverick New Age/Eastern hybrid classic!.......2005-03-25

I am absolutely taken into the beauty and harmony that is the album "Hotel Tara". I first heard this at an independent CD store recently and after finding out who it was, I instantly bought the new album and I am proud of my choice of buying it. This album reminds me very strongly of the Earthtone collection series from years ago. After the apparent and unfortunate demise of the Earthtone label, Sequoia Records seems to have taken the torch and "Hotel Tara" is a powerful CD. "Apollo 13" is a highly eclectic track that incorporates voice effects of a NASA space mission with a gorgeous jazz/New Age groove. "Govinda Hari" is an electrifying song with haunting Eastern Indian voices and a very entrancing melody. This is such a wonderful CD and I highly recommend this.

Blissful Eastern Chill.......2005-03-10

Nothing less than superb ! This new titles from Sequoia Groove is a blissful voyage into the very best of Eastern influenced downtempo chill-out music. A provacative follow up to Sequoia's Buddha Lounge series. This album really transports the listener into some very exoctic and sensuous musical landscapes. I especially love the Jaya Lakshmi track "Govinda Hari" and "Apollo 13" by Joe Werineck which incorporates actual original recordings from the space mission into a lushly textured background of slow and sultry electonica. This is a great addition to any downtempo musical collection. If you like, Buddha Bar or Hotel De Costa you will love Hotel Tara.

The Ultimate Music for Sacred Lovers.......2005-02-10

David & Steve Gordon have done it again ! Just when you thought it could'nt get any better, these musical visionaries deepen the mix even further. Hotel Tara bills itself as "The Intimate Side of Buddha Lounge" and it certainly delivers on that promise. This is an exotic and enticing blend of traditional Eastern music with the very best that Western downtempo-electronica has to offer, featuring an superlative assortment of the very best Sequoia artists and some absolutely alluring new artists. Likely the most noteable being the lead track "L'Heure Verte/The Green Hour"from Artemisia, the new Steve Gordon solo project with it's distinctive tabla beat, exquisite tamboura, sensuous guitar and luminous vocals provided by Jaya Lakshmi whose "Govinda Hari" also graces the album. David Gordon's new solo track "Floating" is also fantastic, melding chill-out and smooth jazz effortlessly into this delightfully transcendent tune. My wife and I have now found our new favorite CD for our intimate encounters and Tantra sessions. These Sequoia Groove titles just keep getting better and better and this one is perfect suited for the the Sacred Lover. Keep them coming. Absolutely delightful.

I concur with "a music fan". This was and is a great band! I do hope that their older albums are reissued on CD. For those of you not familiar with Matrix, think Bill Chase instrumentals meets the Brecker Brothers. This is really good music, and still sounds ahead of its time.

Just received a copy of this CD. How great is was to hear Matrix, again. I've thoroughly enjoyed the new music. Brings back great memories of listening to Matrix IX, Wizard, Tale of the Whale and Harvest when I was in college!

Any chance the other (past) recordings will be released on CD?

Album Description

The debut CD from violist Novi and composer/Stick player Larry Tuttle, String Planet combines a 21st-century approach to strings with a world-beat rhythm section. This is classical crossover with a serious ethnic groove. Soaring and visionary melodies float over an unstoppable river of drums and percussion. Novi contributes lots of heartfelt and creative improvisations with her beloved viola "Stinky" while Larry Tuttle's Stick provides a clean and sparkling foundation on the Stick.

Although primarily an instrumental CD, String Planet also contains two guest vocals from Lauren Wood (the singer of "Fallen" from the "Pretty Woman" soundtrack) and one tune featuring string quartet.

GREAT CD IF YOU LIKE MELODIC STRING INSTRUMENTS.......2004-11-03

This is the group String Planet's debut album (self-titled) which has an unusual sound because the primary instruments are viola (a big violin) and Chapman Stick (a guitar and bass combined as one instrument) backed by assorted hand drums. Plus two songs have vocals (special guest Lauren Wood should have been a star like Linda Ronstadt 20 years ago). It's a cross-genre sound combining new age, classical crossover, folk and world. The sound of strings is their thing. You may remember viola master Novi Novog and Stick player Larry Tuttle as members of the instrumental string-ensemble Freeway Philharmonic or the vocal group Soulskin. Novi also is a well-known session musician who has played with many big-name pop and rock acts. Novi and Larry grew up playing classical music initially and that heritage is obvious. One tune, "The Race," even features a classical string quartet. This is soft, melodic music with propelling world-music-sounding drums underneath and lots of viola improvisation over the top. Great interplay between the Stick and the viola.

Thoughtful Sadness.......2005-03-03

"Unnoticed" is a rich textured melodic journey into melancholy and joy, not to far akin from his fellow Seattle native Elliot Smith.
Reminiscent of artist like Michael Penn and the Finn Brothers. This is Jesse's first true Solo project, opting to loose the moniker of "the World Inside" that graced his first two post Poor old Lu recordings "Roobrik and "Untitled".

Jesse, a Seattle Washington native was thrust into the music industry over a decade ago as the drummer for the legendary underground group Poor Old Lu. And since they disbanded in 1996 he has managed to stay busy as a drummer, songwriter, and recording engineer. Jesse is currently residing in the majestic village of Dansville New York, where he stays active in the realms of studio recording and live performance.

Worthwhile.......2004-10-13

As I mentioned before in my review of Acoustic Café, Lorraine Rousseau and Robert Carlton have made a formula work that was previously owned, lock stock and barrel, by Eric Tingstad and Nancy Rumbel. It's nice to another wind/guitar duo who can play well and clearly enjoy what they are doing.

Rousseau and Carlton write and play music that is, perhaps, a bit more complex than Tingstad and Rumbel. Most of this is due to the involvement of a very high level of co-conspirators. Most notable on this album are Ray Parker (piano), Vernon Dorge (saxophone), and Roman Borys (cello). They do this seamlessly well with a light jazz styling that steers clear of both excess gushiness and the dangers of elevator music.

Each of us will have out different likes. My favorites happen to be some of the first cuts - Song of Your Heart, Visionary World, and Journey Home. But there isn't anything here that I don't enjoy. Of the two albums I've auditioned, I find I like this set best. It's a bit more experimental and together that Acoustic Café. If the two musicians continue to develop as the have, there is much to look forward to.
