5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Teaching Resource.......2007-07-10

Namaste! is an amazing education tool for children and adults to learn and practice together the beautiful art of yoga. A great resource for teachers who want to integrate songs and movement into classroom use and teach their students a fun yet physically and mentally rich practice.

There are so many original songs in this collection. In fact, there are so many tracks! Songs, guided meditations, guided postures - this is a rich resource for inspiration and teaching. Plus, the booklet is a treasure trove of information. All the lyrics are included, with suggestions for using the songs with specific poses and parent/teacher notes that give more in depth background into the yoga perspective.

For those new to yoga the parent/teacher notes are a helpful background, and can deepen your understanding of the purpose behind the yoga exercises.

For those that already practice yoga, the liner notes are helpful in seeing the yogic context that these songs and meditations are based in.

For yoga teachers and classroom teachers the liner notes provide useful tips for integrating the songs into their teaching or even creating their own songs for classroom use.

In addition to basic information on specific yogic breathing practices, including details on belly breath and 3 part breath, the parent/teacher notes also include information on: the role of affirmation songs and nada yoga, mindfulness meditation, managing stress, gratitude, guided imagery and cultivating inner peace.

I was so impressed with the collection on Namaste! that we decided to carry it in the shop in our yoga studio. It's an excellent resource for our teachers that work with children. And our yoga students find that Namaste! is a fun ways to share yoga with the children in their lives.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD for my yoga classes!.......2007-07-10

With over 40 songs and sound meditation moments just on the first CD of Namaste! this set gave me lots of tools and ideas to work with for teaching my yoga classes.
For example, I found the song "Being Present" to be a good lead in for meditation practice with children and even with adults in my classes.
I have played "Being Present" as a listening meditation to center my students at the beginning of class. It makes a great introduction to seated meditation focusing on the breath. I have also played "Being Present" at the end of yoga class as encouragement for my students to continue noticing times during the day when they are "being present" while engaged in day to day activities. Listening to "Being Present" has helped my students find easy and fun ways to focus on meditation practices. It's been an instant "hit".

5 out of 5 stars Fun for all ages.......2007-04-25

This Cd is so much fun! It is joyful and full of heart and soul.

I highly reccomend it for anyone!

5 out of 5 stars A Great Buy for Kids and Adults Alike.......2006-07-21

I bought "Namaste!" upon a recommendation by a friend, and boy have the CDs exceeded my expectations! We have listened to the CDs in the car during trips (we have three boys) and listen to them at home as well.

The tunes are catchy, the boys pick them up and hum them when they are doing their chores (so maybe I used this music to "focus" the boys during their chores). Many of the "ditties" are good for introducing new poses or transitioning into something new (even in every day activities). For a novice yoga family, this music collection is fun, positive, and inspiring.

4 out of 5 stars Fun, great messages, good for kids' creativity.......2006-02-20

My two kids (ages 4 & 7) are listening to this and they are really into it.
They end up making up lots of their own creative yoga poses,
dances and games from what they hear,
which I think is a positive aspect of an audio-based piece.

5 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Storyteller!.......2005-05-12

This CD has 4 execllent stoies on it.Elizabeth Falconer writes one graet story, Little Pink Fish, that I like really really much. Atabichi, the Hoppositional Frog, says all his sentences backwards. He is a silly hoppisite frog.
The rest of the stories are just great.I love all of them, just like I love the instruments too. They sound so beautiful. She plays the koto in three songs and she plays the sanshin on one. They sound interesting. Kintaro-the Strong Little Boy Who Sucked his Thumb is funny. She said to watch out for the Oni monster. Kintaro always sucked his thumb. Falconer is a great storyteller. Love,
Your best friend, Dishyra

5 out of 5 stars 4 Thumbs Up (my daughter's & mine) for Little Pink Fish!.......2005-04-20

Elizabeth Falconer has another winner with "Little Pink Fish." Her ability to combine fresh interpretations of traditional Japanese folk tales is truly exceptional. And, the music of the traditional Japanese koto in melodies and sound effects gives the child an education in music ethnocology without them even knowing it. In "Atabichi, the Hoppositional Frog," the lovely minor chords of Okinawan music provide a backdrop for the story that gives it authenticity and the unique flavor of Okinawan culture that is separate from the rest of Japan.

As a person of Japanese descent raised in America, I'm truly grateful that an artist like Ms. Falconer is available to families who want to maintain cultural ties with our heritage. For our children, they are certainly grateful that this is being done in a fun way! However, for those children of other cultures, "Little Pink Fish" still has a universal appeal that doesn't come off as "educational," it's just captivating and purely enjoyable story telling. It's recommended for ages 4 and up, but my 2-year old daughter was singing along with "Tomodachi Kintaro...." during her first listening experience the other night before bed. The next morning, she was asking for "Little Pink Fish" upon waking.

I highly recommend Ms. Falconer's Koto World CDs to parents and children alike. Besides the story telling CDs, the koto music ones are also wonderful for all ages. "Oyasumi" has become our standard new baby gift to friends who all say how much they love it!

4 out of 5 stars "There comes a time to close your eyes to what is real".......2006-11-16

There are very few moments on this album that rise above the mid-tempo range, whereas the songcraft relies heavily on arrangements and the often dazzling vocals of Danny Cecati. His control is excellent while some of his sustained vocals are impressively long and expressive and is the main reason I keep returning to this album. In fact, he is the brightest highlight on a very strong recording. "Two Souls Apart" shows off his talents with emotion and power all the while the band interplay, while not especially amazing is otherwise solid and frequently high quality. When "Illumination Fades" hits with its insanely catchy stop/start guitar riffs beneath Danny's already established vocals is when this band truly shines, with a tasteful guitar solo as added polish. "Where Clouds Divide" continues on the same mid-tempo path where the songcraft is more important than speed riffing and/or meth-induced double-bass drumming. This is wherein my primary complaint lies. Every now and again a song slows down too much or the arrangements become sparse to the point of becoming slightly boring, making the vocals carry the song exclusively. But the arrangements can also be fairly interesting, though not all that original, such as piano interludes or string sections. But there are plenty of hooks, as well, such as on "Dawn (a new beginning)" with its catchy guitar-work and fluid tempo-shifts making it one of the strongest tracks on the album. "While The World Sleeps, pt.1 Dreams" is actually pretty until the guitars increase in presence and remind me that this is actually a Progressive Metal creation. "While The World Sleeps, pt.2 Altered Visions" seemlessly continues the epic soundscape with a balladesque intro before turning Progressive and up-tempo where Eyefear are clearly at their best, continuing to showcase the talent of their lead vocalist throughout. "The Script Of Sorrowed Tales" is the fastest song yet with plenty of Progressive-style guitar riffs and a couple of guitar solos that are once again laced into the song structure rather than exercises in egomaniacal bombast. While "Vivid Window" is an acceptable ballad, Danny Cecati's vocals help elevate an otherwise unremarkable song. This is easily the weakest track on the album. But then "Beyond Twilight" picks things up again to finish the album with a flourish. All in all, the good production and intelligent songcraft are enough for me to recommend this CD to fans of mid-tempo Progressive Metal who enjoy quality vocals and thoughtfully arranged song structures. Eyefear are definitely a band to look for in the future. Thank you.

5 out of 5 stars ROCK REPORT says............2005-12-19

Progressive metal fanatics will definitely spend some pleasurable hours with this release, which is blessed with an above average production thanks to producer Endel Rivers (Vanishing Point, Black Majesty) and the mixing duties of Andy LaRocque (King Diamond, Evergrey)

5 out of 5 stars Melodic Prog Metal at its Best.......2005-03-04

Every once in a while an album comes along and takes you by storm. It's not necessarily the most groundbreaking or an unusually original record, but it has this certain quality to it that directly speaks to you and occupies your stereo/discman for a good many weeks - non-stop!

Eyefear's 9 Elements of Inner Vision is that kind of an album. I'd never heard of this band until this CD of theirs came out, and was quite surprised that it was actually their sophomore release. It turned out they had already released their first one in 1996; so they're no newcomers. 9 Elements of Inner Vision, however, is what put them on the map, possibly because of their new line-up, especially singer Danny Cecati (ex-Pegazus). Cecati is an unbelievably amazing vocalist; he can scream like there's no tomorrow and deliver heart-wrenchingly emotional tunes. I haven't heard this band's debut, but I'd bet that it sounds completely different from 9 Elements, since this is one of those albums heavily characterized by bands' lead singers. At first, Danny Cecati reminded me of former Steel Prophet vocalist Rick Mythiasin's style on the debut album of Redemption. Sort of like an aggressive power metal vocalist singing for a melodic progressive band. On the other hand, his phrasing is more in the lines of Roy Khan (ex-Conception, Kamelot) and perhaps the lead singer of Pagan's Mind. If you've heard any of these guys, you can bet that Cecati possesses a killer voice that you will most probably be impressed with. Check out the killer scream at the end of track two, "Two Souls Apart". The other song, "Where Clouds Divide" is even scarier. It opens with emotional vocals that quickly turn into a powerful falsetto scream right off the bat. His slower singing is even more amazing. There are two ballads here with great piano work and intense vocal harmonies.

The music also has certain reference points. I was immediately forced to think of Eternity X's The Edge album when I heard the first couple of tracks on this disc - the groovy bass, in particular. Guitarist and main songwriter, Kosta Papazoglou, plays extremely crunchy rhythms over delicately woven keyboard arrangements. The contrast is most likely going to appeal to fans of Evergrey. The dark tone of the music, lyrics and even artwork are going to add to it. I was pleasantly surprised to find out in the booklet that Andy LaRocque had mixed the album. Since LaRocque mixed my favourite Evergrey album, In Search of Truth, as well, and Eyefear members being big fans of the band, I believe this disc may garner tons of fans, provided that it reaches the right audience. I've heard other people comparing Eyefear to bands like Vanishing Point, which I agree with whole-heartedly (producer Endell Rivers has worked with both bands), and some others, including Control Denied, Conception, Vanden Plas, and Ark. I seem to detect some Pagan's Mind like arrangements here, which is a big plus, given that Celestial Entrance is one of the most brilliantly produced prog metal discs, ever.

Back to Eyefear. Their brand of music could be labeled melodic prog metal with various time signatures, alternating between wicked vocals and guitar runs with shifts of mood and colour. The guitar solos here are no doubt going to please fans of Symphony X. What I particularly like about this disc is that there isn't a single overplayed riff for the sake of showing off. Keyboardist Sammy Giaccotto's melodies are soft, yet sparse and they are laid over the music like a thick blanket. The drumming is more direct and not as complex as some other prog bands out there. Its directness and double bass drum use may also appeal to fans of power metal, but I'd hardly call Eyefear "power-prog". I've always hated that term anyway; besides, the music presented on this disc is certainly progressive in style. One little complaint could be made about the packaging; on the back of the CD sleeve it says there are 10 tracks on this album, while there are only 9. Mattias Noren's artwork and layout is fantastic. I can pretty much tell his work by heart now, cause he's really developing a distinctive style. I've been listening to this disc for nearly two months now, and repeated listens have revealed that the songs on this disc are a tad same-y, i.e. not as ultra-diverse as Eternity X's The Edge (then, what is as diverse as The Edge anyway?). But I'm not complaining; this is one of the greatest bands I've discovered recently and I can see many others enjoying them as much, if not more.

The piano arrangements of familiar Christmas songs in this collection are perfect to put on when you are overwhelmed by the demands of the holiday season. It's very restful, lovely music that doesn't require a lot of attention; it works well as background music for holiday activities, but is very enjoyable on its own terms, as well. Highly recommended for a relaxing holiday musical experience!

    2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2006-03-09

First of all, I'm a big Switchfoot fan. I also occasionally enjoy classical music. I've even enjoyed previous string tributes to other bands. Strung Out on OK Computer comes to mind, as well as a Pink Floyd tribute.

But this just doesn't work for me. I liked maybe two of the songs on here, the rest sounded cheesy and pretentious. I ended up giving my copy away to my little brother for Christmas. :o)

And I don't even know what "The Sharing of Tries" is.

3 out of 5 stars For the complete Switchfoot Fan.......2005-10-11

Most people will enjoy this album if they are fans of Switchfoot's older music. Although the album has a few hits from "The Beautiful Letdown", most of the CD features hits from earlier albums. My only complaint about the album, is that it is an entirely digital recording from what I hear. The songs are not performed by a real string quartet. If you are a fan of classical music then this might bother you, otherwise it is a pretty good album.

4 out of 5 stars Another good one!.......2005-06-05

I'm not a big fan of Switchfoot...but this Quartet versions of these songs are amazing. I think this album takes Switchfoot's songs to a whole new level and improves upon their composition. Switchfoot should do more work with strings, especially if the outcome is as great as this!

    5 out of 5 stars Very awesome String-Quartet Tribute.......2005-04-03

This is my favorite String-Quartet Tribute so far. If you're a fan of Switchfoot (and definately orchestra type instrumentals) you're probably going to like this. Songs like Meant To Live, Dare You To Move, Learning To Breathe, Chem 6A, and some of your other favorites are all here. This was the second type of these String Tributes I heard, and I was very impressed. This isn't the switchfoot your used to with singing and guitar, but replaced with violins and cello's and that sort. Even though an odd replacement, it's just as good as the original Switchfoot and gives you a different hear on the music. 2 thumbs up.

A wonderful album from someone who like many started in church and brought those rhthyms to bear in a secular way. rock solid, rock steady, just wear the grooves out in this gem. I only wish that I could hear more of her, or be in a live audience. No dissapointments here, from beginning to end, you will be filled with just chesire cat smiles!

Like Raffi, Hap Palmer is a musical ambassador to kids. Aiming for cultural diversity and/or sensitivity during the holidays on Holiday Magic, Palmer and, occasionally, a group of kids make their merry way through standards like "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" and remake "Jingle Bells" into "Jingle Song," while visiting the Jewish "Chanukah, Oh Chanukah," the Latino "Feliz Navidad," and even the Hawaiian-flavored "Merry Hula." Palmer and the adults do a wonderful "Caroling, Caroling," but it's the sing-alongs such as "The Angel Band" and others that will get families chiming in, too--and teach some important lessons at a time of year when not everyone is doing the tree and crèche thing. Recommended. --Martin Keller

    Album Description

"It's a time for love and sharing, a time to sing a joyful song" Hap Palmer's opening lines set the tone for this magical collection of songs. A variety of musical styles from playful to reverent evoke the richness of the holiday season. Hap's original songs and unique adaptations of traditional favorites invite active participation. Children clap, stamp, jiggle and dance; they express things they are thankful for, play rhythm instruments, and sing along with traditional favorites. The recording also includes instrumental versions of all the songs making it an ideal format for use in holiday programs and family and school sing-a-longs. A complete lyric book is included. Ages 3 - adult

Tracks 13 - 24 are instrumental versions of the 12 listed songs.

As an educator, I found it easy to listen to, my students loved it immensely and we were able to use the instrumental versions for our Holiday program.

Unless a seconds-long slice of piano boogie-woogie counts, there is nothing remotely cool or hip about Sharing Cultures with Ella Jenkins. But while your kids are little -- 3 to 8 if you go by the label's recommendation -- you'll never want to remove it from your CD changer anyway. The first lady of children's music earns her reputation here, waving her magic wand over near and distant lands and turning what she discovers into 28 neatly bundled bits of sound. Cultures is not all about music; it plays more like a night by the campfire, with songs and poems erupting from a story whose narrative dips and swerves, rudderless, to the corners of the earth but manages to keep its grip on its listeners anyway. The cultural odyssey (Mexico, Ireland, Turkey, and Russia are among the countries visited) benefits sharply from Jenkins' slow, soothing cadence, but credit is also rightly extended to the children of the LaSalle Language Academy of Chicago, who sing sweetly but mightily on a number of tracks. A 30-page booklet in this 31st Jenkins release clinches its staying power: Song notes and drawings are steeped in whimsy, but a pig Latin lesson pulls kids in closest, acting as a sweet, subtle confirmation that it's speaking their language. --Tammy La Gorce
