Past Echoes

Editorial Reviews

cited from the Baltimore Afro-American Feb.27-March 5, 1999
"Music has charms to soothe the savage breast. And soothing is the appropriate adjective for the music composed by Sheryl Fisher for her CD, Past Echoes." The article goes on to say about Sheryl's abilities, "And instruments? If she decides she likes the sound of one, she learns to play it. And if she can't afford to buy it, she makes it"

Product Description
Past Echoes is music which brings a new experience in new age, world, pop and jazz music. It features rapturing sounds of harp, wind controller, zither, and Alesis and Roland keyboards. The instrumentals are beautiful, soft and relaxing. Vocals are sung in English and Irish.

Album Description

Oregon's Dead Moon have been churning out their own indescribable brand of rock and roll for nearly twenty years now and they've yet to slow down. They're the model of DIY self-sufficiency, having recorded almost all their output themselves, released much of it on their own label (Tombstone Records), and even cut their own masters. This is the best of Dead Moon as compiled by rock and roll legend and survivor Fred Cole.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Is this a joke?.......2007-05-23

The samples of this band on Amazon here are all of a rap band. Is this some kind of joke? Mistake? It is NOT rock and roll.

5 out of 5 stars buy this one.......2007-03-01

This is some great rock n roll. Don't know what else to say, other than if you like no-frills, raw rock, you'll love this.

5 out of 5 stars Diamonds in the rough.......2006-09-18

This is an excellent introduction to America's most overlooked rock and roll band. Dead Moon is the real deal, playing unadulterated old-fashioned no frills rock and roll. Fred Cole, guitarist, singer & songwriter, opted out of the baloney of the music biz in the late 60's, forsaking the potential to be a big rock star. Instead, he did it himself. Dead Moon embodies the DIY ethic. Fred even creates his own master vinyl, using the record lathe he bought from the Kingsmen. The record lathe used to make "Louie Louie".

Fred might be the only artist featured in the Nuggets box set who is still making garage rock. He was the singer in the Lollipop Shoppe (name created by record company) and their tune "You Must Be A Witch" is still performed by Dead Moon.

But that is all background and would mean little if the music wasn't real. But it is. Whether the subject is drugs & paranoia (Room 213), the struggles and rewards of fidelity (I Won't Be the One Who Walks Away), or the life of an outsider (Poor Born), Fred brings authentic emotion to his words and both he and Toody, his wife of many years and the bass player, sing with conviction.

Dead Moon may be an acquired taste for those who have been raised on studio perfection. This is RAW. Not the fake raw of so many corporate rock bands, but the real rawness of genuine emotion and rock and roll power. Is real rock perfect? Hell no! Dead Moon gives it to you like it is, warts and all.

Buy this album, and learn the songs. Most importantly, go see Dead Moon live. Every night, some band, somewhere, is the best band in the world. When Dead Moon is playing, they are that band. If they don't come to your town, go to where they are. Dead Moon is much more popular in Europe than in the States, so maybe a trip is in order. Or make a pilgrimage to Portland, Oregon to see Dead Moon on their home turf with a hometown crowd, singing along to every song. I've seen hundreds, if not thousands of rock bands, and no one brings the real power of rock and roll like Dead Moon. Listen to this Cd at top volume, with your favorite beverage or three, and every night can be a Dead Moon Night.

5 out of 5 stars Echos Of The Past...and of ours too!.......2005-02-23

I have known Peter Phippen as a fellow musician and friend for many years. When he asked me to come over to his studio and listen to his project "in the works" (Echos), I was both surprised and delighted. We had not seen one another for many years and I was just visiting our hometown when I saw him on stage at an arts fair in a local park...small world. As with all good musical friends, time and distance faded away in mere minutes.

I don't think "Emerald Mountain" even have a name at that time. Peter played the melody on the flute, handed me a headset and a mic and my vocal came direct from Peter's heart. It was one of those rare performance experiences that most musicians cherish...a creative bonding inspired solely by each other's gifts. But as far as I knew at the time, it was just a "jam" session...laid down in 2 takes. I had no idea Peter would use it on Echos...and I didn't hear the final product until almost a year later. What an incredible gift! Thank you so very much Peter (and Canyon) for the privilege of appearing on Echos.

And for you folks who may not have heard Peter's music, I can tell you that Peter has found his true voice in the vast array of flutes he has mastered. Peter is an unbelievably gifted musician...one who can pick up just about any instrument and be playing like a virtuoso within hours...but the flutes ARE Peter. So pick up Echos or sample some tracks and my personal promise to you is that you will meet one very special man with a heart as big as the universe he interprets musically. I like to listen on a clear moonlit night sitting out on my upstairs balcony looking out over the water. The way the flutes meld seamlessly with the chorus of tree frogs and warm, light breezes on my face transports me to the place my soul resides. It's a place we all have within us and vist too infrequently. Peter can take you there...I never knew his middle name...perhaps it is Pan!

5 out of 5 stars Transport to magical places.......2004-02-21

Peter is one talented player. Echoes of the Past is a must have CD. He can bend notes w/ the best and he can set up a wonderful musical ambience. This CD does a great job of allowing you to close your eyes and wander in the land of never-never or those rare and fragile times you experience in a magical moment. Here are a few of my impressions from this CD:

Masked Dance - this song transports me back to my visits to Southern Spain, the castles, and the moorish influence but does it in a smooth, soothing but haunting way. Makes me think of a gypsy dancer doing a very slow, hypnotic dance w/ the hands w/ castanets playing a rhythm and arms telling a story of the past. Very nice echo to the past.

Moonlight - have you ever stayed late at night when the moon is full and there a few light clouds crossing the sky? The serenity and the splendor is spellbinding. this songs takes me there.

Spirit World - ever had a dream of pixies dancing around a fire? this song takes me there in a nice ethereal way.

Daughter of the Mist - it takes me back to a dream of King Arthur's time and the ladies of the mist are doing a walk in a foggy night. They seem to be floating so majestically...

Days of June - this song is so uplifting. it takes you to one level, it makes sure you are still there and it transports you up some more and then after a while it lets you down easy. I can hear this song over and over...

5 out of 5 stars Haunting.......2002-02-19

His music is haunting. I actually got chills listening to it. I am learning to play the Native American flute and this gives me a dream to strive for.

5 out of 5 stars enchanting.......2002-01-28

This is a wonderfully enchanting cd. Very enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully written, haunting, music.......1999-08-12

This music is really wonderful for a day of relaxing, and rejuvenating your spirit. It is a blend of both mellow and spirited songs that you are guaranteed to enjoy! Take a listen, and find out!

Album Description

Former Truly (Sub Pop, Capitol) frontman Robert Roth's solo debut, "Someone, Somewhere…," is an uncompromising statement of artistic dedication. Equal parts Brian Wilson detail, Flaming Lips experimentation, Spiritualized bombast, and Tom Verlaine geometry, Roth's soulful drawl and unshakeable soaring melodies weave together washes of haunted guitars, mellotron-soaked soundscapes, and warped orchestral passages into an ageless epic that differentiates itself from imitations.

Devil in the Woods Magazine hailed "Someone, Somewhere…" as a "truly timeless creation," and said "Roth's work overwhelms listeners one moment, then pacifies them in starkly bare passages seconds later. It echoes nearly every great blast of sound from the past 50 years, not in the order of its chords, but in its ability to shake listeners from their complacency."

On his own for the first time, Roth's fierce yet elegant songwriting takes center stage. "Someone, Somewhere…" plays like a movie, putting you on a first-name basis with characters like "Vicki and Jacky" as they move between urban decay and gentrification ("Walk All Over Downtown Life"), stumbling into the violence and chaos of Seattle's millennium-closing WTO riots ("Streetplay `99") into the rolling blackouts of both U.S. Coast's ("Blackout City Serenade") and the personal alienation that accompanies living in a world clouded over by the harsh order of 9/11's cultural aftermath ("Relive These X," "Under the Ever-Watchful Eye," and "Yesterday's War").

Roth's work is personal but it also connects the personal to the political in the most subtly persuasive way. Avoiding lectures or preaching, he just recounts the low-level battles creeping everyday outside his front door. Somewhere between Thoreau's "Walden" and Zinn's "A People's History of the United States," Someone, Somewhere's ultimate effect is simultaneously unsettling and empowering. It reminds us that there are some compromises we must simply refuse to make.

5 out of 5 stars The Beginning of Something Beautiful.......2004-06-11

When music is good it's a wonderful thing; better than any drug, any amount of material things.... anything!! Robert Roth has been making good music for years with former band Truly, and has therefore heeped a mountain of pressure on himself to deliver with this, his first solo outing. Being a fan of his past works I have to confess I was apprehensive.

But you know what? The boy dun good!!!!

From beginning to end this album is filled with songs which never leave your head. From the mellow Lighting and Thunder, to the faster harder Relive These X, to the subtle title track, to the dark pop of Poison Arrow, 'Someone, Somewhere' is truly a great album, filled with dramatic soundscapes, and layer upon layer of keyboards and guitars intertwining to form beautiful melodies. Roth has outgrown the early Seattle sounds of his past and has broken through into something more rounded. You can hear any great musician from the last 20 years in here if you listen hard enough.

Go get this!!! You will never forget the day you bought it. It'll be the beginning of the rest of your life. AL

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Music CD.......2007-01-04

Love this CD. The song choice and sound is excellent. I love his voice. He is a very talanted singer. I will be buying his CD's if available on amazon.com.

5 out of 5 stars Farhad from California.......2006-12-06

I think this is a great album, if you are into Ghazals/easy listening. I think Mr. Aman is an amazing artist, as well as a vocalist. He is a complete artist for these reasons; he is a vocalist, composer, writer, music director, producer, and can play many instruments. He is also very knowledgeable of Eastern and Western music. And one can see that in his music and his arrangements. Currently we have only a handful artists that can bring our music to the international level, and they are as follows; Ehsan Aman, Farhad Darya and Khaled Kayhan, and they are most active in the market.

Word of Wisdom: If you don't understand something, it does not mean it's bad. One needs to research about a subject or topic then comment. In Western music they have 20 to 30 different music genres, maybe this is not your genre of music. One has to know, his or her own taste of music then one can comment on a subject matter with honesty. Some of the comments appear to be intentional, or motivated to discourage buyers, which is wrong. We need give our entire artists a chance, because they work hard and spend lots of time and money to produce an album. Otherwise, we'll be the loser of such good artists. So, please comment wisely. Thank you.

1 out of 5 stars Low class album........2006-05-20

I got the album, it sucks big time... all songs are in some strange kind irani dialect.

3 out of 5 stars Average.......2005-12-24

I have every Ehsan Ahman CD, and I have to say that his latest compilation is really not that extraordinary, or new. Lots of these songs lack any innovation. It seems Ehsan is not willing to deviate from the tried and redundant Afghan 'wedding singer' role, even though he is not that active anymore as a wedding singer.

As for the lack of variety, it is true he sings more Dari songs than Pashto songs, but this may be due to the fact that there are few Pashto composers in Virginia who can give him good lyrics. It does not have to do with any ethnic bias, because he himself is a Pashtun from the Ibrahimkhel tribe. I also doubt it has anything to do with a musical bias. He is a lover of classic to contemporary Afghan music and some of his renditions of Pashto folk music such as "Bya de pa Zulfano Ke" are loved throughout the world by Afghans.

Ehsan's music has evolved through the ages, and his love for mixing of contemporary musical instruments with classical is a definite homage to his music idol, Ahmad Zahir, the King of Afghan Music.

5 out of 5 stars Good Job Ehsan.......2005-12-09

For all those ignorant people (it's mostly likely one person because the same kinds of grammatical and spelling mistakes are evident in all the negative reviews) that don't know anything about Afghanistan should educate themselves first before posting none sense reviews giving the impression that Dari is not a language from Afghanistan and some how only belongs to Iran. The root of Farsi or Dari began in Afghanistan over thousands of years ago and have spread to the regions of Iran and Tajikistan. If Afghanistan has anything left to be proud of is the beautiful and rich language of Dari. Well Done Ehsan! You make Afghanistanies proud. Pashto is the language of the nomads and only in the last hundred years or so has been given the status of an "official language" of Afghanistan by foreign forces that have always used Pashtoons as puppets to destroy Afghanistan.

    5 out of 5 stars Best I've ever heard.......2006-04-12

The Prague String Quartet's maniacal precision in its performance of String Quartet No. 12 [the "American" Quartet] seems to me the finest chamber performance I've ever heard.

Real as the Memory, the debut CD by Zach Ziskin, showcases the singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist's emotive vocals and personal, insightful lyrics. His rich, textured sound, steeped in classic pop sensibility, echoes the past but with a modern edge that draws from a wide range of influences. The result is an opulent record with rock-solid songwriting, driving beats and bold, crunchy guitars.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing pop production!.......2003-08-19

I first heard from Zach Ziskin from a friend who played with him not long ago! Zach's music is so powerful and emotive!! It is really quite an experience to take the journey to go through the entire album which brillianly starts with "Figurine", reaching a fantastic beat with "Lift" and then the next track, "Gravity" makes us reflect on our current situations... by the time you reach "Guess I always knew" you are prepared for the up-beat song with a spectacular drum arrangement! Brendan Buckley does a wonderful job in this album! This is the type of music that makes us realize that South Florida has brilliant musicians!! Way to go!!!!

      5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!.......2003-02-05

I first heard about Zach Ziskin after a friend sent me a link to a song she was raving about called Falling to Pieces. After hearing it, I immediately had to find the CD it came from and who the artist was. It was Zach Ziskin, and the album was Real as the Memory. Not since Jeff Buckley (or maybe Chris Martin) have I heard such a passionate voice, and amazing songs that grab you and stay in your head. It's just a matter of time before the rest of the world discovers this brilliant singer/songwriter.

      2 out of 5 stars Good Debut!!.......2003-01-27

This 1998 CD recording has lots of musical imagery and gives the listener a challenge. Many of the tracks take you on a soothing, Gaelic journey into the artist's soul. Without question, Sheryl is talented in many ways taking a big part of the recording duties. I was impressed with the instrumentals, as they had a hint of "Enya" and "Clannad" influences. There were a few problems with the CD. One was the quality of the recording. Most of the tracks stop with a lull before the next track starts. Also, I didn't much care for the vocals, although she did have a nice voice. In spite of those shortcomings, "Past Echoes" was still a unique experience to listen to. Very Original!!

5 out of 5 stars The instrumentals are as memorable as they are impressive.......2002-03-27

Hauntingly beautiful is the only way to begin a description of Sheryl's musically gifted vocal performances that are encompassed in Past Echoes. A voice like whispered silk and a tonal pitch that reaches into the soul's center, Sheryl's performances are as technically flawless as is this Araxis 3 Productions recording. The instrumentals are as memorable as they are impressive. The pieces comprising Past Echoes include Memories of Love's Dream; The Rose; Mala Na Gaotithe; Playtime at Dusk; Rainday; The Joyful Drummer; Mastique; Refuge; M'Ait Chiuin; Fonn Suaimhneach; Serequin; Blue Valley; Windows of Time; and the title song, Past Echoes. Also very highly recommended listening is Sheryl's Angels In The Myst ...

5 out of 5 stars Review of PAST ECHOES by Bernie P. Nelson.......2001-08-15

Sheryl Fisher's music feels like it emerges from deep personal experiences and quickly touched the heart of this reviewer. It's a soul soothing new mixture of world, pop, & New Age. The enjoyable mix of harp, flute, keyboard, and English & Irish Gaeilge vocals creates pure rapture. While listening to Sheryl's etherial voice heartfelt emotion merged into clarity and healing. This music must emanate from something deep within her soul.
