Editorial Reviews
Haku is a classical Japanese poem made of three verses. The first and third of these verses have five syllables, the third one, seven, for a total of seventeen syllables per Haiku. Haku is pure and clear poetry closely related to seasons and nature. The influence of Zen is omnipresent in these simple poems wich evoke moving images. Michel Dubeau has succeeded in capturing with great emotion and sensitivity the universe of Haku with compositions inspired by the Japanese philosophy so rich in refinement and shades. With its unique sound, the Japanese flute (Shakuhachi) links the poems to a music that emphasises on improvisation and the quest of expressivity.

The solo-piano format is the polygraph test for pianists. On this release, Joey Calderazzo, who has worked with Michael Brecker and is currently with Branford Marsalis's group, passes it with flying colors, thanks to his fleet-fingered technique and his diverse influences. On the standard "Just One of Those Things," Calderazzo displays a surprisingly strong stride-style left hand, while the meditative "Chopin" showcases his grasp of the classical tradition. "Bri's Dance" and "The Legend of Dan" reveal his ease with Latin tempos and waltzes. The late Kenny Kirkland, Calderazzo's predecessor in Marsalis's quartet, wrote the wistful ballad "Dienda"--also recorded by Sting on All This Time. Calderazzo's moving rendition represents a passing of the torch, from fallen star to a rising one. --Eugene Holley, Jr.Album Description
New solo release by pianist for the Branford Marsalis Quartet Haiku is Joey Calderazzo's debut recording for Marsalis Music, and represents his renewed commitment to American music and its rich tradition. Although the term "haiku" is a few thousand years old, it finds new meaning in the hands of this creative musician.Customer Reviews:
Melody und Harmony.......2005-03-24
This is Joey as rarely heard before. If you are accustomed to hearing him swinging hard melodic lines against the revelations of Branford Marsalis' saxophone then this is quite the revelation. Now, Joey is showing his reflective side. Joey's playing can be described as gentle, atmospheric, and expansive. It makes me think of the 2-volume set "The Solo Sessions" from Milestone of Bill Evans.
In Haiku, Joey Calderazzo shows his meditative side. Within this solo piano package, his playing is fashioned in a `thema con variazoni' form. With each `variazoni', he expands the theme further and further within the structure. It's a dynamic contrast to the solo piano work of McCoy Tyner, where McCoy solos with the intention of building a new musical environment from a simplistic (by relation) theme, Joey is thinking on the piano with the harmonic inventiveness of Herbie Hancock (live, circa 1964) and with tempo momentum of Bill Evans.
Haiku is a music album for musicians. This time, Joey has taken time to play with the essence of music in mind. This is music for music lovers. There are no avant-garde licks or double-time solos. What you get here is the study, the science of the melody and the harmony; the two basic elements of music.
So, sit back and enjoy this conversation between Joey and the piano we are so lucky to witness.

Haiku D'Etat brings together three of the L.A. underground's most notable talents: Aceyalone and Mikah 9 (of the Freestyle Fellowship) and Abstract Rude (of Abstract Tribe Unique). They last collaborated on their 1999 debut, but the intervening five years haven't diminished their chemistry. Throughout their careers, these lyricists have drawn frequent comparisons to jazz artists as their wordplay and rhyme flows resemble a kind of verbal bebop. This sophomore effort finds them innovating further still. On "Mike, Aaron and Eddie" they stutter out words and phrases with a mechanical proficiency that's both organically effortless yet unnaturally precise. "Transitions and Eras" takes the jazz motif to its most literal as the three spin out a tangle of rhymes while Fat Jack keeps the beat in the pocket through his bass lines, rim taps, and tinkling piano. Less heady, but no less enjoyable, are the post-relationship analysis "All Good Things" and braggadocio fest "Top Qualified," featuring Quannum's Lyrics Born, Gift of Gab, and Lateef. Inspiringly creative and impressively virtuoso, Coup De Theatre is easily as strong, if not better, than anything Acey, Ab, or Mikah have done individually since they last worked together, and hopefully it won't be another half-decade until they collaborate again. --Oliver WangCustomer Reviews:

Mike, Aaron and Eddie own the stage..........2005-08-29
Haiku d'Etat is, without a doubt, one of the most original acts I have ever had the pleasure of listening to. Skilled and thoroughly versed in hip-hop's ever fluctuating language, Mike, Aaron and Eddie take the music to a different plane of existence. The second release is much smarter than the first, accompanied by a DVD of freestyles and exclusive videos of the group's tours and interactions. Let me break it down like so:
Beats:
Production has definitely stepped up a notch. On the frenetic, "Mike, Aaron and Eddie" you are caught up in a fast paced blitz of words and beats, which will definitely have your head nodding and your jaw dropping. Other cuts like "Stoic Response" may leave you desiring a bit more. "Top Qualified", though lyrically off the meter, could have benefitted from better production.
Flows:
This is where the album shines. Songs like "Kats", "Dogs" and "Coup De Theatre" are surely examples of the triumvirate's great presence and writing ability. Not only that, they know how to entertain you with off the mark quips and still keep the beat. If you want lyrics, look no further. Also, check out the DVD if you yearn for more.
Lasting Appeal:
I have to give it to them for trying something new and being very original. Honestly, most people in the industry can't take those types of chances because they'll lose their fan base or for fear of being alienated. Haiku d'Etat is an album that forces you to take notice of three cats that move hip-hop towards a new horizon. I enjoy it tremendously.
Buy this one and get the first album just to know where they came from.
Ani'mout!

Hardcore Cage.......2005-01-24
The 'Winter Music' as well, for one to twenty pianos I recall a story of a performance in Italy where the audience inhabits a typical European aristocratic courtyard at a music school, and the surrounding two tier buildings (in a rectangle) have pianos that creates a wonderful antiphonal effect. Here you cannot get that, the piece comes across with intense convolutions, and indeterminate-ness,the work is very difficult to listen to, each event is unto itself, not related to anything anytime, other than the here an now of what is known or was known.Zen.
TV KOLN is a graphic work where you the pianist has options to play other noises or timbres, or sounds, usually a radio is used, or the human voice.KOLN was the music center of the avant-garde in the Fifties continuing to today in many respects. You can also tap different parts of the piano box body, and it is up to the pianist performance to discovered the registers of the piano fully. "MusicWalk" is like "Water Music"only for a "travelling" pianist who must walk within the performance space to make noises elsewhere than center stage; you can use differing timbres. The pianist here uses his voice as his extended timbres.
The "Concert for Piano" and Orchestra was/is a seminal work, it is not really a "Concerto" it simply means musicians can co- inhabit a place to play together or not. The music is a virtual encylopedia of graphic notation processes, playing arpeggiations, horizontal and vertical distributions of tones, clusters, tremoli, rolls, also playing the piano's insides. The best way to play this and again only a live performance will give you the import of it, is like Bach or Xenakis, where you simply 'flip a switch', turn on the sound. playing as if there is no one else in the world. very provate. The result can be mysterious, magical, fascinating, disorienting, also boring and tedious, but mixtures of these gestures as well is part of this piece.
Much of the playing here seems much too much the same, I would think if you are going to ambitiously mount entire swabbs entire tomes of Cage's piano music that you bring a large spectrum of what the music can be and you introduce as much variety as possible.I would have liked to have more "theatre" for performance art was born here. The radio is a wonderful instrument. Also electronically altered, morphed timbre is perfectly allowable in this music, contact microphones would have brought another dimension to these works, and you then get outside the box of the stereo renderings of CD and there was none of that to be found. Here the readings are hardcore, there is no right or wrong, merely interesting and uninteresting.

Re-release of a masterpiece from 1999.......2004-12-11
The thing is, if you listen enough, you shall realize that each song here contains something essential to hear. All are good, but some definitely stand out more than others. This album is really a success in musical achievement, definitely Hiphop, but very authentic. Although these three are top-notch lyricists, the niche that they find here is the beauty of the all-around music that is offered. It's very jazzy, and I'm sure they had a live band behind them. A guitar is even used on a few tracks, most noticeably "Non Compos Mentis" and "Still Rappin'." The saxophone used on "Wants vs. Needs" is a great compliment.
The title track, the name of this super-group and album, kicks it off. This is definitely a good song, although the chorus is distorted and is the only track that doesn't sound too sharp musically other than "Slower Traffic To The Right." "Los Dangerous" is not one of my favorites, but they try out some reggae style, and do it well. Listen to Mikah's solo "Pro Tool Robots" because it's hard to descipher at first, not one of the best tracks here, but memorable in it's own right. "Wants vs. Needs" is an important track. It reminds me of "Temptations," the song off the album of same name by Freestyle Fellowship(Mikah and Acey are in that group). I thought they could have come a little stronger on this track, but the music is definitely enthralling. "S.O.S." is one of my favorites, and "Firecracker" is unique, one of the few uptempo tracks, which has mostly battle rhymes and cool sound effects. "Other MC's" is memorable, especially Ab Rude's verse, and "Slower Traffic" was solid, Acey's last verse outstanding. "Studio Street Stage" is one of the most forgettable, but that's because everything else is so great.
My favorite songs have yet to be mentioned. "Non Compos Mentis" is absolutely wonderful, Acey is just HUNGRY on this one! "Still Rappin'" and "Kaya" are simply relaxing. "Still Rappin'" is easily the standout, and one of the best songs ever in Hiphop! It's simple, yet embodies everything that's good about Hiphop: positivity, feel-good vibes, reminiscing, perseverance. The guitar at the beginning get me anxious for the rest of the song! I wish Mikah would have actually 'rapped' a little instead of singing his whole verse, but this song is still monumental. The last, "Wo Wo Wo Yeah Yeah Yeah," I didn't like the brevity at first(just over 2 min.), but it's still great nontheless. This joint is just one spectacular verse by Aceyalone with great music.
The first listen through this album you might be like, "What the hell are they doing?" I mean, I didn't expect solo joints here like Mikah's "Pro Tool Robots" and the last track with Aceyalone. "S.O.S." has just Acey and Ab Rude, while "Kaya" has just Acey and(Fellowship member) P.E.A.C.E. On a couple of the tracks, Acey's verse is only like 20 seconds. It's not as amazing lyrically as I was unfairly expecting. Their infatuation with weed manifests numerous times, but I guess I can overlook that. They didn't diss modern day rap music as much as I thought they would, but they do their own thing! However, Aceyalone does bring his A+ game lyrically on this album, much to our delight. Like I said this album is about authentic Hiphop music! It's definitely different than "Coup De Theatre," and different than anything they've ever done solo.
Make sure you cop both albums by Haiku D'etat. It's great Hiphop music, and much different and better than pretty much anything out there! Mikah 9 doesn't stand out as much here as on "Coup De Theatre." His mouth does kind of run off like I thought it might, especially on the first couple tracks and "Wants vs. Needs." Although, he does essentially MAKES "Still Rappin'," one of Hiphop's all-time classic songs. Like I said Acey is the lyrical standout, and Ab Rude does have his moments. The real heroes here are the musicians, and how the three MC's play off the instruments and each other. Don't wait, hesitate, or debate...pick up "Haiku D'etat" today!

Album Description
This record features the poetry of Greek Nobel Laureate George Seferis set to the beautiful and subtly colored music of Sigmatropic. Following the album's success in Greece, the poems were translated into English and sung by an all-star cast including Cat Power, Robert Wyatt, Laetitia Sadier (Stereolab), Alejandro Escovedo, Mark Eitzel, Steve Wynn, Howe Gelb, Lee Ranaldo (Sonic Youth), and more. Multi-instrumentalist and producer Akis Boyatzis, the nucleus of Sigmatropic, blends live instrumentation and studio wizardry into a diverse collection of songs that drift fluidly through folk and rock styles into dark ambience and back out again. Enhanced CD includes the video for "Haiku Five", featuring Carla Torgerson and Akis.Customer Reviews:
It's a pearl of a find..........2006-01-31
Gorgeous soundscape, low on the songwriting........2004-09-18
The poetry is gorgeous, no doubt. The music itself matches and maybe excells Seferis' kaikus. Ranging from light acoustic experimentation to what borders on trance, the album is musically varied and stunning. It's amorphous in it's form and has little in the sense of forward motion or climax, but works tremendously well in it's soundscape and emotive atmosphere. In many ways, the work sounds like the product of a marraige between Miles Davis and Sigur Ros, with the occasional passionate affair with Bjork.
I like.
