A FUN BALLET WITH QUITE A HISTORY!.......2000-01-30

It can be said that La Sylphide (Sylfiden as the Danes call it, was premiered by the Royal Danish Ballet in 1836), composed by Herman Severin Lovenskiold and choreographed by Bournonville, is the earliest piece of ballet music from the Romantic period that has been recorded. However, an ealier version of the same ballet by a different composer (Schneitzhoeffer)--no recordings--and choreographer has been revived by the Paris Ballet (Who knows how faithful it is to the original!). La Sylphide is a story about a female spirit, called the Sylphide, who falls in love with a young man; he too falls in love with her. But the little courtship is to be cut short by a witch. The fairy tale ends with the death of the Sylphide. The star ballerina of the first version of La Sylphide was Marie Taglioni, who was forever associated with the beginning of the Romantic ballet. Now we come to the version recorded on this CD. First, a little history. After the Danish choreographer, August Bournonville, saw Marie Taglioni dance in the role of the Sylphide at the Paris Opera, he wanted to stage his own production of the ballet. But first, he had to purchase the rights for using the score (by Schneitzhoeffer), but to his disappointment, it was too expensive. Consequently, he decided to have entirely new music written. And the man to accomplish this was Lovenskiold. So successful was this second version that the complete Bournonville choreography along with Lovenskiold's score are still used today by the Royal Danish Ballet. This is a superb "complete" performance by the Danish Radio Sinfoniette. The sound is clear and rich! Damgaard who has been the chief conductor at the Royal Danish Theatre since 1990 conducts beautifully. Under his baton, the orchestra makes the music sound alive and poignant. For those who are interested in ballets or just a great fairy tale, I highly recommend they get this CD. The only alternative recording is the one on Chandos, performed by the Royal Danish Orchestra (conducted by Garforth). It is also excellently performed (Read my review for that recording!). That CD contains an extra number (a pas de deux, which is not ever played as part of the complete ballet), which is a delight to hear! The CPO version, however, contains James' Act 1 solo, which is not in the Chandos recording. If you're a completist, get both!

Excellent recording of Lovenskiold 's Ballet.......1999-10-26

It is a beatiful recording of the first romantic ballet, who has a precursor on Taglioni's Sylphide (which can be appreciate on video recording by Ghislene Thesmar interpretation with the corps of Opera Paris Ballet, music by Scheneihoffer,available at amazon.com). The perfomance of Lovenskiold partiture by the Danish Radio Simfonieta conducted by Daamgaardt is perfect, without affectation and it reach the maximum climax on second act. I bought this record because I listen on the radio the overture and the introduction of the first act, which inmediately decided me to find out and bought this version. There is only a criticism to the booknote which is included on the CD. Taglioni 's Sylphide has been succesfull performed in our century, on the seventies by a reconstruction taken on by Pierre Lacotte and interpreted by Ghislaine Thesmar. Teatro Colon of Buenos Aires offer this version on 1974 on stage and it was suscefull received at Argentine and many great Argentine Ballerinas interpreted the beautiful role of the light Sylphide.

This is a CD that is excellent for Sunday morning coffee and the newspaper as well as Wednesday night cocktails. It is relaxing yet at times can make you think. This is a CD to have in the collection!

I can't stop listening to this CD. This debut from Sharon West is an incredible journey--it soothes, it relaxes, it rejuvenates. I have two copies, one for my office and one for my car. I look forward to this artist's next work.

This CD is a great mix of easy to listen to music with some more upbeat, some more soothing. I enjoy listening to it to relax and unwind as well as to get moving for the day. Great CD for in the car, home, anywhere.

Relaxing Soundtracks.......2004-03-10

Anyone who likes relaxing music will like this album. It blends jazzy instrumentals and great keyboards into an easy listening sound that would be great at home or in the car. Several cuts would also make great movie soundtracks. I highly recommend this album.

I have enjoyed Sharon West's first CD for many months. The CD has a great selection of songs that enable me to do all my office work while enjoying some great music. When playing the CD, I've been asked about the music as it is a very 'ear catching' selection. If you have a small business and/or home office, this is a great CD to own and enjoy! Bartók's Mikrokosmos ("Little World") essentially comprises 153 teaching pieces, divided into six books of progressive difficulty. These works make ideal vehicles for budding piano students who are ready to face the myriad challenges of 20th-century keyboard music. They also reveal the kernels of the Hungarian composer's uncompromising compositional style. György Sándor was a piano pupil of Bartók's, and his fluid, perceptive playing is unfailingly idiomatic, from the simple, canon-like exercises at the start to the demanding Six Dances in Bulgarian Rhythm that crown the cycle. The mono engineering is thin but acceptable. Suffice it to say that the composer would have been proud of what his pupil achieves here. --Jed Distler

At the actual moments it's hard to find out that unusual and missed way of play Bartok with these well known dissonant inflections, for all of us who had the immense privilege to watch this legendary pianist twice in Caracas in the seventies and eighties. To this reviewer, it will be absolutely impossible to forget his egregious presence and powering [...], steeled phrasing hovered by that special reverberation and acidic lyricism at the moment to play Out of doors that cold night of December 9, 1982.

Without another intention in mind, but intending to illustrate and motive the newcomer listener, I would say that in just few counted occasions (Richter and Prokoviev, Ravel and Cortot) there has been such chemical rapport between composer and performer.

At least in my case, I have not heard about any other pianist able to sound so sarcastic, reverberating and genuinely Hungarian as Gyorgy Sandor did it.

So I really hope you to keep in mind all these previous considerations at the moment to make this wise choice. Go for this record without any shadow of doubt.

This album is now part of the mythic legend of the treasures for keyboard.

No other pianist will sound so astonishingly as Sandor does.

Complete recordings of Mikrokosmos are relatively common these days, but aside from guiding students I wonder what purpose they serve. This is a series of piano study pieces starting at the most basic level, and the music with genuine listening interest really begins only with Book 3 (of 6). Similarly the duets are mostly teaching pieces, and though they make for good listening in small groups, the entire series becomes tiresome. Bartók wrote magnificent music, and the later books of Mikrokosmos are filled with superb little pieces. But though the performances in this set are all excellent, not much of the music is basic Bartók. --Leslie Gerber
