Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08
The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!
I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.
The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Not a Bad Song on This Album.......2007-07-14
I have wanted to listen to it on numerous occasions since then. Unfortunately everything, including my music, is now on CD and "It'll Shine" was not available on CD. In order to listen to it, I would have had to pull out my old turntable, find a place to put the turntable in my current audio system, and hook it up. A real pain in the arse. So, the album stayed where it was, in the closet.
As soon as I saw "It'll Shine When It Shines" was available on CD, I bought it. Oh, the joy!! Nearly brought tears to my eyes. By the end of the first song, "You Made it Right", I was back in full Daredevil mode. "Jackie Blue", arguably their most recoginizable commercial hit, was as pure and purty as ever. Such memories!
If you like you country with a pinch of Bluegrass, a helpin of folk, and a big dollip of rock, you can't go wrong with this album. If I could give it 10 stars I would!
Great CD Reissue From An Underrated Band.......2007-07-03
The Ozark's, 'It'll Shine When It Shines'.......2006-03-04
Great 70s Sound.......2005-09-30
Keep on Shining.......2003-12-24
Hailing from Springfield, Missouri the band are amongst the most eclectic in rock, almost every band member wrote material, sang and played an array of instruments. Their harmonies certainly equalled the Eagles, and their sound incompassed 'down at home' bluegrass, FM rock, melodic folk country, but also more experimental arrangements such as 'Colorado Song' on their debut release.
'It'll shine' is the ozarks second offering and it's great to get it on CD. There was a trend for bands in the early 70's to get back to the country, well the ozarks never really left it recording the material at a pre Civil War farmhouse with Glynn Johns producing.
There is a real joy on this disc, of a band in tune with nature and each other playing to their strengths. Everyone will know Larry Lee's 'Jackie Blue' which was a big hit for the band and is good straight pop rock, but not entirely representative of the rest of the material, although 'Look Away' and 'tidal wave' show the band can rock.
For me it's the lighter and rootsy material that make it. 'You made it right' with its southern gospel feel, 'Lowlands' with its magnificant harmonies and the slightly zany 'EE Lawson' typical of steve Cash's work.
The disc closes with the title track leaving on a sentimental, and uplifting note. This disc is waiting to be discovered by any serious music fan - give it a try.

Relatively speaking, not their best.......2004-12-21
When it's good such as Randle Chowning's glorious 'leatherwood' and the poignant 'cobblestone mountain' it's really good. I also like 'southern cross' with brilliant Steve Cash lyrics and Larry lee's atmospheric 'from time to time'.
Sadly some of the material is a little uninspired ('Thin Ice' and ' 'Out on the Sea') and the vocal arrangements on Mr powell are a little messy. This is a shame if you consider some of the bands earlier unreleased material (as evidenced on 'log cabin sessions') which perhaps should have found the light of day.
Despite these reservations, this is still superior country rock: try listening to the guitar opening on 'whipporwill' or the folky oboe on Gypsy Forest and you are reminded just how great this band was.
If the bonus tracks from 'the little red record' (a copy of which I have) had replaced the weaker ones on the original release this would surely have been up there with 'it'll Shine when it shines'.

This collection bulges with the hottest and most dazzling jazz of the 1920s, with Armstrong dragging his lesser colleagues along with him in a whirlwind of inspiration. How a young man from the rugged and unbending background of downtown New Orleans could learn to play such sophisticated, sure-footed magic will never be known. He pops up to astonish on the 1926 tracks with classic ideas already spouting from his horn. Over the next three years, he would metamorphose into the sublime creator of the trumpet solo on the last track, "Tight Like This," one of the most dramatic and enchanting solos in the whole of jazz. Before that are fresh-as-a-daisy cornet acrobatics, as found on "Potato Head Blues" and "Struttin' with Some Barbecue." There's more exquisite playing on "Savoy Blues," where Lonnie Johnson adds some eloquent guitar. And then there's "West End Blues," the trumpet classic par excellence that brings in pianist Earl Hines, already a decade ahead of his time and one of the most potent influences on Armstrong. This is a thoroughly enjoyable history lesson. --Steve VoceCustomer Reviews:

The one to get if you can't spring for one of the boxes!.......2001-03-29
But for many people, four discs may be overkill. This collection includes virtually all the mega-classics - Heebie Jeebies, Ski-Dat-Di-Dat, Mustrat Ramble, Struttin' With Some Barbecue, Potato Head Blues, Big Butter and Egg Man, Weather Bird, West End Blues, St. James Infrimary, the UTTERLY AMAZING Tight Like This, and more - and should make nearly anyone into a convert!
As for me, I already have the old 3-LP Columbia set (36 cuts), and there's very little from those that aren't on here that I miss (e.g., That's When I'll Come Back To You). And the convenience of having it on CD is well worth any duplications. The sound quality (given the original 20s recordings) and liner notes are excellent. This is an essential CD... unless you just decide to go whole hog and get one of the box sets!
"And I say IT IS tight like this!"

Product Description
This highly revered album is now available on CD for the first time ever! The package includes the original cover art, photos, and lyrics. All 10 of the original album songs are on the disc, plus 3 "bonus tracks". Many will find they have never heard these 3 songs before. All 13 tracks have been Digitally-Remastered from the Original Master Tapes. The Ozark Mountain Daredevils united as a band in December of 1970. The group was signed to A&M Records in 1972 and, in 1973, they recorded their first self-titled album in London, England, resulting in the hit song "If You Wanna Get to Heaven". The second album, "It'll Shine When It Shines", included the song "Jackie Blue", a world-wide No. 1 hit. While at A&M Records, the band recorded eight albums resulting in two Gold Records in the US and Canada. The band subsequently signed with Columbia Records in 1981, where they recorded one album. At least three other projects followed in the '80s.

FLY AWAY HOME AND GIVE THIS A SPIN.......2005-03-12
I loved it instantly: it was fresh and unprententious country rock and the band looked happy with life which is quite rare in the over serious world of rock. From then on I bought all their material and they become one of my favourite bands even though I am more of a classical fan thses days.
In retrospect this is not their best effort, but it is still superior to other relarses in the field. It contains a number of tracks written a few years previously such as 'fly away home', 'you know like I know' and the wonderful 'mountain range' which is sort of a re-run of Colorado Song with flutes and oboes replacing guitars.
What I particularly like here is the superb 'Red plum' with its scintillating mandolin and the evocative 'watermill' where Steve Cash gives a great vocal performance. Larry Lee's 'homemade wine' is great bluegrass/pop and shows the bands ever present sense of humour. 'Noah' although a great song is given much better treatment on the 'It's Alive' disc. 'Arroyo' - perhaps my least favourite ozarks number - is a disappointment.
The disc is a good one, but the band missed the talents of Randle Chowning who left during recording and as a reminder his gem 'better days' recorded during the 'it'll shine' sessions ends the disc on a high note.
The pictures of the band having dinner, fishing and generally looking amiable in the Missouri contryside - sadly - belong to a lost era of music.
Classic !!.......2003-01-10
I do have one little point of criticism though; the track "You know like I know" has a running time of 3 minutes and 41 seconds while my vinyl version clocks at 4 minutes and 6 seconds. This CD version has the omission of 25 reallybeautiful seconds from the middle of the song.
But despite this............go out and buy it, folks !!

a long-awaited treat.......2002-12-14
On the whole, the sound is outstanding too. So far, I haven't noticed a *trace* of tape hiss--although I'm not sure if this is from very clean original tapes, or from modern signal processing (which is not necessarily without its downside). The CD has a much more bottom-heavy sound than the LP, and to my ears it seems like that's due to making instruments like the bass and drums more prominent, rather than EQ changes.
One thing they did flub, though--the fadeouts on some tracks should've been gentler. In fact, I'll go so far as to say that the end of "Homemade Wine" was botched, and I may eventually try to splice the end of the copy on my hits CD onto it to fix the abrupt end.
I remember, in the heyday of Napster, downloading some tracks from the Pickwick CD release of *Don't Look Down*, and finding some of the same abrupt endings, only worse. I was well acquainted with the LP, so it was hard not to notice. Note to New Era people: Are you listening? Please be careful about those fades!
=======
One further comment, in answer to the later reviewer: The Daredevils' CD hits collection (called The Best) has the same shortened version of You Know Like I Know. (I don't know why they would do that, unless the original master tape was seriously damaged or something.)
It's about time!.......2002-12-08

One of the best colections you will ever find.......2005-10-20
This is not some collection made in someones garage with sub-par recordings, infact it is just the opposite.
All songs are by the original performers and the sound quality is suberb. The songs appear to be remastered and sound like they were recorded yesterday.
You get all the Rock and Roll artists along with the Do-wap artists like the Platters, The Skyliners.
Personally I am not a huge fan of music from the 50's, but this is where I go when I want to hear something from that era.
All of the classics are on here, Bill Haley, Carl Perkins, Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, Eddie Cochoran, Ray Charles and the list just goes on and on.............Enjoy
For those smart enough NOT to buy American Graffiti OST .......2005-06-22
I wasn't around back when these songs were blasting on the radio, but I grew up listening to this music - thanks, mom! If you want to experience the sound of this era, this three-set cd collection is perfect. I've been looking for Maybellene, Be-Bop-A-Lula, Peggy Sue, Sea Cruise and Blue Suede Shoes and they're all here on the same set!
Try ebay before you buy here. I found this set relatively cheap over there. There were about five sellers when I bought mine, all vying for the lowest price.
This is great road music for those of you in my generation brave enough to try something new and break away from the Death Cab for Cutie/Outkast conformity we hear all the time on mainstream radio.
For those of you who grew up on this stuff, please let me reintroduce you to your old friends. This cd has almost all of them.

Another long-awaited reissue of The Ozark Mountain Daredevils' classic albums from the '70s is now available on CD for the first time ever. It's Alive was originally released in 1978 on the A&M label. This project is part of a continuing series of re-releases of the groups work, and will at last meet the demand of the long-term fans who have asked for many years that this Live album be available on CD. It is bound to attract new fans as well, with the same appeal the band's music has always had - rootsy, self-styled Americana that has withstood the test of time.Customer Reviews:

One of the songs is a very neat setting of "Satisfied Mind" played in the men's bathroom at McDonald Arena at Southwest Missouri State University, so that they could gather the acoustic sound of that area.
I've been looking for this to come out on CD for years, it's one of my favorite Daredevils albums. If you are a Daredevil fan, I'd think you'd need this one, regardless of which Daredevil albums you have, to fill out a good collection of this type of music.

The Roaring Twenties still roar.......2006-12-17
Surprisingly, this method was quite tolerable, as extant records from 80 or 100 years ago prove. Once one adjusts to the limited frequency range of acoustic recordings you quickly discover a performance dynamic unique to the format.
HITS OF '21 * Ain't We Got Fun? is the second of a series released by a British company, LIVING ERA. Horn recording had reached its technological pinnacle by 1921, as the 25 examples here demonstrate. Many stars of the 'teens and 'twenties who we still remember today will be found in this collection. These include Al Jolson, Fanny Brice, Ted Lewis, Eddie Cantor and Paul Whiteman.
Additionally there's Vernon Dalhart, one the earliest country music recording artists (back then it was called "hillbilly"). Dalhart was best known for "The Prisoner Song." On "Tuck Me To Sleep.." he is backed by a vocal quartet. Also on this set are Van and Schenck, a comical vaudeville team, whose 1914 waxing of "Aba Daba Honeymoon" was one of the best sellers of that decade. Here they do a spirited version of this album's title cut, "Ain't We Got Fun."
Other still remembered tunes on HITS OF '21 include "My Mammy," "The Sheik Of Araby," "Ma! He's Making Eyes At Me," "All By Myself," "Look For The Silver Lining," and "My Man."
Notes are included for each track, which is a definite plus. This collection is a great way to get acquainted with the happy music of the Roaring '20s.

Finally, some variety!.......2007-01-30
Callus' intonation is flawless and her phrasing is modern yet sophisticated. I thought the Vaughn Williams was particularly poignant and I only wished she had performed the whole suite for this CD. Judging from the Bowen, she would have a pretty impressive Perpetuoso Movement.
The Walton is a staple, its the viola's Beethoven Violin Concerto, its a monster, and she did a very nice job. Some of the parts can sound awkward when performed without delicacy, but I thought even William Primrose would be happy with this recording.
A great recording! Absolutely essential........2006-07-26
After the Walton, everything else on the disc is new to me and seems to be very rarely recorded. And that seems a great shame, because the rest of the music is fantastic and so wonderfully easy to listen to, I can't imagine why these works haven't found a place in the catalog. I would say that after this recording, they will certainly grow in popularity.
The Vaughan Williams Suite which opens the disc is delightful. Rich in the opening, intimate in the middle and fun at the end. For me, the big winner, however, is the Howells. The Howells is simply drop-dead stunning. Callus is so passionate as are all the strings of the New Zealand Symphony. This work alone will surely win accolades.
Finally the York Bowen Concerto rounds out the disc. More in the mold of a bravura 19th-century violin concerto, this is a work of scale that violists never seem to get. Callus brings a highly dramatic flair to this work. I especially enjoyed her virtuosic cadenza (the notes say she wrote it!) at the end of the 3rd movement.
Alone, any one of these works is worth purchasing, together they make an outstanding combination, a full 78 minutes worth of music that is an absolute must have.
