The music lifts my spirits! It is fun and lighthearted. I sincerely recommend this CD by Andre Rieu.

1 out of 5 stars Not the best versions available.......2002-02-12

First of all, why call this recording
"Fiesta"? only for the first four latin-american
works? because the rest of the cd is of
German music.I you want a real "Fiesta"
disc, I recomendation is that disc
of Keith Lockhart, is much more fun and
much more in a fiesta spirit than this one.

5 out of 5 stars This is a great album!.......2002-01-02

I highly recommend this album. Andre Rieu is a great violinist. If you buy this album you will not be dissappointed. I'd give it ten stars if I could.

5 out of 5 stars Their very best record -- still new, even now........2007-04-13

Sometimes one generation's vision of what is new and strange seems quaint thirty years on. This music, which is a picture of the strangeness of the modern world of 1980-something, is as vivid now as it was when it was first released.

Part of this is that the sound is so intelligently structured and presented -- the production is a model of clarity. Partly it's the strange palette of tone colors that combine so well with Jim Kerr's rich yet hollow voice.

But most of all, I think, this is because there is something haunting and mysterious about the combined clarity, intelligence, and color that is so perfectly set off by the propulsive bass and drums that drive track after track and that sustain this record over the long haul. The contrast is what makes Sons and Fascination's vision of modernity fresh and evocative even if it is so clearly a thing of its time.

Their later music tends, I think, to sound like Chicken Soup for the New Wave Soul, and their older music seems almost to document Simple Minds groping their way towards this record. If you are a fan of the later stuff for the sake of the allusive qualities that remain in it, you may just find there is more of that here, and better.

4 out of 5 stars Before they sold-out.......2007-03-29

Long before The Breakfast Club came along and ruined a great band, Simple Minds were making great records. There are 4 CDs that deserve a place in any collection: Empires & Dance, Sons & Fascination / Sister Feelings Call, New Gold Dream (81-82-83-84) and Sparkle in the Rain.

This CD is actually 2 albums in one. Sons and Fascination and Sister Feelings Call. They were released simultaneously and both are presented completely here. Excellent euro post-punk. Jim Kerr's song writing was at it's best during this period and the band is excellent, especially bass player Derek Forbes.

5 out of 5 stars Truly fascinating and original.......2007-03-03

Simple Minds made some truly fresh, invigorating music in their early days. The band's evolution was so fast and dramatic. This double album was recorded just before the band made their mainstream push, and consequently very little of it sounds commercial. Whilst I feel their follow-up (New Gold Dream) is their best, it's perhaps this record that contains the most challenging yet accessible soundscapes of the Simple Minds catalogue. I can't stress enough how unique and uncategoriseable this record is. It's not mainstream pop music because none of this would ever have gotten much airplay. It isn't progressive rock because of its accessibility. Considering the unconventional rhythms and textures, maybe we can call this industrial pop, but it really doesn't need a label.

The album opens with my favourite, "In Trance as Mission." It's got a driving, insistent 6/4 beat with a killer bassline. Layers of synthesizers propel the song over seven uplifting minutes. Jim Kerr's lyrics are non-sensical yet compelling: "In dream a dream a / courage of dreams / in trance as mission / trans-american / moving on." The darkness from previous albums was left behind on this incredible opener.

Next up are two of my least favourite Simple Minds tracks, "Sweat in Bullet" and "70 Cities." These two tracks exemplify the sometimes overbusy arrangements in the band's more experimental work. Each of these songs have too much going on. They also have some seriously annoying keyboard melodies. Fast forward.

"Boys From Brazil" gets back on track in a big way with pounding drums and more synth layers. Like a lot of their early songs, there isn't a definite, simple, strong melody, but various elements including bass and vocals come together to create a clear picture. Again, the lyrics don't tell a story ("Babies can't manage crocodiles?"), but they fit so well with the abstract network of pulsating sounds behind them.

"Love Song" is anything but. A high-energy, rocking track with a subtle disco backbeat, it could nevertheless have been made in 2007. This is a high point on the record. More great, weird lyrics: "Flesh of heart / heart of steel / so well so well / I cut my hair / paint my face / break a finger / tell a lie / so well so well." The electronics point towards their next album. And the decidedly low-tech tambourine adds a perfect touch.

Sons & Fascination winds down with three slower, darker tracks. "This Earth That You Walk Upon" is a bit lighter on lyrics but dense on musical texture. Processed guitars blend with finger snaps and breathy yelps to create a completely original sound. The title track is a bit more nimble, but retains the darker tone. The rhythm is similar to "Boys From Brazil." Dig some more abstract lyrics: "Summer rains are here / Savaged beauty life / Falling here from grace."

Finally we come to "Seeing Out the Angel," a lengthy, menacing track. The heavy, mechanical composition is the result of a brooding synth line and sparse, robotic drums. This is about as scary as Simple Minds ever got, with the possible exception of a couple songs on Empires & Dance. The eerie music bonds perfectly with the dreamlike lyrics: "Rescue by the first light / Receiving us with these tears / Feeling your gaze in the back of my eyes / Leaving worlds this way." On what planet do you suppose this sequence of alien events transpired? Only deep within the tortured recesses of a nightmare?

Luckily, the second half of the album lightens things considerably. Sister Feelings Call contains what I feel are the (slightly) weaker tracks from this recording session. It opens with the classic instrumental "Theme For Great Cities." This is a fine example of the technical skills each member of the group brought to the studio, in addition to their composing abilities.

Next is "The American," a fan favourite, but really one of the weakest tracks here. The vocals tend towards the bombastic and silly. "20th Century Promised Land" is another weird little song. Better than the previous track, but still skip-worthy. The keyboards are out front too much in the arrangement and the sometimes-painful melody is reminiscent of "Sweat in Bullet." Skip it.

Things pick up again with "Wonderful in Young Life." Faster, more industrial. It's got some funky bass. And it's slightly darker with a nice chugging electric guitar. "League of Nations" has a trippy synth beat that was sampled by Dr Atmo for his Sad World album in 1993. More rather menacing sounds play out to very terse lyrics. Stirring, if somewhat repetitive music.

"Careful in Career" is similar to the better tracks from the first half. It retains the darker feel of those and has more distinct drumming and synth arrangements. Another highlight. An instrumental version of "70 Cities" finishes the album.

One thing that strikes me as I listen to this album is the groupwork -- no one is getting drowned in the mix. This is easily the best lineup Simple Minds had. Derek Forbes (b), Charlie Burchill (g), Brian McGee (d), Michael MacNeil (k). Though they would write even better songs in the future, Sons & Fascination is the pinnacle of their pure musical ability. This is an obscure album, and the flow of the songs is somewhat puzzling. It's mainly just a collection of songs. No real sequencing is evident, so there isn't much contrast as one track moves into the next. But these complaints are minor. This is a groundbreaking piece of work even though relatively few people have ever heard it. Though it's now more than 25 years old, it has aged very well. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Cool Updated Collection From These Electro-Rock Pioneers.......2006-05-28

I love the music here, but I gotta say the packaging over the years has been messy, botched by indecision upon its initial release. Back in the mid-80s I had the original SONS lp (I can't recall if it was imported or what). It had 10 of these selections and some songs also appeared on SISTER FEELINGS CALL.

Before I got this re-release, I had never heard "70 Cities as Love Brings the Fall" which merely adds vocals to "Sound in 70 Cities." I still prefer the vocal-less version, perhaps out of familiarity. It's an upbeat instrumental of old-school U.K. rock augmented by what sounds like a chainsaw. "Seeing Out the Angel" is another new one for me, and it's very good - a sterile, hypnotic piece.

Unfortunately, the weakest track here is the first one. "In Trance As Mission" is a rather awkward song and may have turned off some new listeners before they heard the entire album, the rest of which is excellent. Highlights include: the swaggering rocker "Sweat In Bullet," the meditative "This Earth That You Walk Upon" and the hypnotic yet driving instrumental "Theme for Great Cities."

"The American" may be the best track here. It's very synth heavy and it also rocks. A scorching lick from guitarist Charlie Burchill closes out the song with real intensity. It should also be noted that Derek Forbes (who, after all these years, recently rejoined the band, but only for a short while) laid down some absolutely addictive bass grooves all over these songs.

These guys created some of the most unique, palpable rock atmospheres during their underground electronic period which includes the albums REAL TO REEL CACOPHONY and EMPIRES AND DANCE as well as this one. This new disk collecting SONS and SISTERS might be the best of the bunch.

4 out of 5 stars The "Not Ready For Prime Time" Songs..... But Pretty Good.......2003-09-04

This import CD combines 2 of Simple Minds's early albums, albeit in a slight shortened version to get them on 1 CD (13 songs, 69 min.)

While not attaining the greatness of the "New Gold Dream" CD that would come out 2 years later, this album has some really great tunes. Opener "In Trance as Mission" sets the tone, with a heavy bass. "Sweat in Bullet" has a nice intertwine between synths and guitar. "Boys from Brazil" is reminiscent of XTC-era "Making Plans for Nigel". Other standouts include instrumental "Theme for Great Cities", "20th Century Promised Land", and the best of all "The American", which truly foretells things to come on "New Gold Dream" and "Sparkle in the Rain".

This album is not for the casual Simple Minds fan, who should stick to the pretty inclusive "Best of Simple Minds" 2 CD collection. But for those enchanted by "New Gold Dream" and "Sparkle in the Rain", this is a necessary addition to the collection.

Monsters Are Waiting may be one of the biggest bands to come out of Los Angeles this year. They have been touring heavily on the west coast. They have become regulars at Spaceland, the Troubadour, and Popscene in San Francisco. I recently saw them at Popscene and they totally wowed the audience. This record is an expanded version of a self-released EP from last year. There are three extra songs. This is a great album from a band that I expect to be really big very soon. Monsters Are Waiting are a combination of glamour, new wave, and intelligent pop music. They only have to do more tours of the East Coast and the UK, and let more people find out about them. If this band went to the UK, things would explode. Monsters Are Waiting are a band to get into.

5 out of 5 stars Monsters are waiting is a hit........2006-07-06

First of all, I have to say this is the best indy rock band to come out in the past two years years. And trust me when I say you will be impressed with this CD.
The lead singers voice is somewhat angelic and calmingly beautiful (other than Don't Go... unforunatly she sounds like she's having a minor orgasm).
Nobody (#3) is great example, this song is both written beautifuly, and sung just as good. With such a good song is there any more just as good? And the answer is yes.
Last Goodbye, Ha Ha, A perfect Stranger, Firefly, Christine, Monsters, and Time are excellent.
But wait... Thats 8 great songs, and there are only 10 in the album.
Well, other than two songs this CD is a must have for anyone who enjoys Bright Eyes, Death Cab for Cutie, and Annlynn.

1 out of 5 stars go away monsters are waiting............2006-07-03

Boy is this band lame or what? The songs are slow, not catchy and she can't even sing. Jon, go back to Eve 6 and make some real quality music again!! EVE 6 ROCKS!!

3 out of 5 stars Excellent album from rather unknown group!.......2006-06-23

Searching through the CDs, I found this one that caught my eye. I took it over to the listening station and gave it a listen, and I was quite impressed with this CD from what I heard!

The vocals on the CD are very good to say the least, in a few of the songs, you can hear where she really shines, like in "Time". Some of the songs are slow, others are upbeat and garage bandy sounding, like "Fascination" or "Ha Ha".

All in all, this is an averagish CD. Nothing quite different, the scheme is pretty much the same it seems. But if you like bands like "Metric" or "The Fitness", you'll probably like "Monsters are Waiting" as well.

This collection features lovely selections of French music. This music is not upbeat, but reflects the romantiscism and beaty of France. If your looking for light orchestral music that is not entirely classical, I would reccomend this CD. Au revoir, et La Vie an Rose!

4 out of 5 stars My favorite single from the "Disintegration" album era .......2004-12-11

The single for Cure's "Fascination Street" has two versions of the song: Remix (4:17) and Extended Remix (8:48). Both of these sound pretty much the same, but one is longer. We are also treated with two B-side tracks. "Babble" (4:16) is a speedy, chipper little tune. Overall, it is a simple song, but will be a treat for any Cure fan. "Out of Mind" (3:51) has a slightly different sound to it than other songs from the "Disintegration" album era, but probably is good enough to have been included as part of the album. After a 1.5 minute instrumental introduction, we have another chipper, fast-pace song with pretty simple repeating lyrics. The re-mixes of "Fascination Street" are nice, but the two B-sides are what make this single worth getting.

    5 out of 5 stars Great B-Side.......2001-11-22

Much like the "Lovesong" CD-Single, you will find not only a stirring version of "Fascination Street," but a really cool B-Side. "Out of Mind" is a song that should be on the "Wish" album, which is why it may not have made it onto the more melancholy "Disintegration" CD. It's a great song (reminds of "Open" on "Wish") and makes this worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars last of the good cure.......2000-10-08

i bought this single when it came out in 1990, when i was 12 years old and already an avid cure fan. all the singles from the disintegration albumn were great, good old-fashioned cure. 'babble' and 'out of mind' are good tracks, like most of their b-sides. makes me sad for the old days.

5 out of 5 stars Top notch remix.......2000-01-26

I think it can generally be said remixes don't add much to their original cuts. Fascination Street is a glorious exception. Others might recommend this disk for the b-sides, but I just cant stop pressing repeat on track four. If you don't buy it now, you may lose out -- the other sites say it's out of print!

One of the brightest tenor players on the jazz scene today, Joe Lovano has been recording as a band leader since 1990. While Lovano has played in a variety of interesting contexts since signing to the Blue Note label, Trio Fascination finds the saxophonist in superb company with bassist Dave Holland and drummer Elvin Jones. Performing original material except for the standard Ghost of a Chance, the talented threesome stretches out musically and engages in some particularly impassioned playing. Spanning a wide variety of moods and emphasizing the sonic possibilities of a trio setting, this disc displays Lovano as a true master of improvisation. Playing soprano, alto, and tenor, Lovano possesses a clear tone, and his ideas are plentiful. An excellent vehicle for all three musicians. --Mitch Myers

4 out of 5 stars Great varied program.......2007-07-22

Saxophones doing a trio CD put themselves right out there, since there's no other 'lead' voice. Even Coltrane takes a break in "Giant Steps" for a piano solo. So, how does Lovano do? Very well, though the CD as a whole would have been improved with a song or two left off. Joe Lovano mixes things up with different horns, and different song types and tempos. In addition, Dave Holland and Elvin Jones are a dream team rhythm section. At times the bassist provides some singing melody from the low end. The CD starts off well with "New York Fascination", "Eternal Joy" has a chirpy riff on soprano. "Ghost Of A Chance" is the sole standard, and Joe does a very classy job on it. "Studio Rivbea" has a catchy melody. "Cymbalism" is a nimble song that gets developed real well. "Impressionistic" sounds like it's the most improvisatory - with these guys you can't go wrong! "4 On The Floor" features another catchy riff. So, which ones might I have left off to concentrate the saxophonic goodness? "Sanctuary Park" and "Villadisco". They're not bad songs, just not the equal of the others.

All in all, a very fine effort by one of today's better saxophonists.

4 out of 5 stars Not the best stuff out there, but..........2000-09-30

Joe Lovano has, of course, received an enormous amount of hype over the last few years. So is it deserved? Yes and no. He's not the next Sonny Rollins as some have claimed (but who is, really?), and in fact he isn't a major innovator at all. There are other improvising musicians out there who are forging new paths in ways Lovano doesn't even hint at. Just because he isn't reinventing the wheel, however, doesn't detract from the fact that he's one of the most distinctive saxophone stylists in the modern mainstream (and, despite what many have said, he is thoroughly mainstream rather than avant-garde). This is one of his strongest albums, because it features him doing a lot of what he does best: blowing. That's right, no high concepts, no large ensembles, just Lovano's four horns and two of the best rhythm men in the history of jazz. The reflective "Sanctuary Park" is just about worth the price of the album. If you're looking to get into Lovano's work, this is as good a place as any to start.

4 out of 5 stars another lovano gem.......2000-06-26

mr. lovano gives us a chamber piece here, coupled with the outstanding rhythm section of elvin jones and doug holland. together they explore various forms (blues, ballads, burn outs, etc.) with great aplomb. the solos are marvelous and mr. jones and mr. holland simply get better as years go by. highlights on this album are the quiet somnolence of 'sanctuary park,' the quirky bop of 'eternal joy,' and the wonderful interplay of '4 on the floor.' this is a great introduction to mr. lovano, an artist who continues to develop and deepen with time (check out his latest release with his nonet).

    5 out of 5 stars A Great CD.......2000-01-27

Like the reviewer below I had some misgivings about music without chords. But I come back to this CD over and over again. This is one of my favorite recordings. Jazz people will really like this music . It is good straight ahead post bop and will not disappoint. Joe is dead on.

5 out of 5 stars Three brilliant players playing brilliant compositions.......1999-08-13

Before I listened to the record I wasn't confident about it, purely due to the fact that there is no chordal instruments, such as guitar or piano. But Dave Holland's double bass-playing definitely makes the back ground music fluent and coherent with Lovano's sax-playing, who is simply a natural modern postbopper that turns his sax into a killing machine---you either feel relaxed or go completely MAD with him! Elvin Jones can always put the strong accent at the right position to enpower the music, and he plays with style !!

    Album Description

Celebrating Bartók's fascination with the folk music of Transylvania, Hungary, Romania and Turkey, Haimovitz delves into his own Romanian/Middle Eastern ancestry to create a sonic tapestry that bridges genres, geographic distances and cultures. Working with legendary guitarist John McLaughlin and cutting-edge turntablist DJ Olive, up-and-coming talents such as Montreal's early Mediterranean/contemporary music ensemble, Constantinople, and Haimovitz's newly founded all-cello band, UCCELLO, Haimovitz explores the different facets of his musicianship as soloist, improviser, ensemble leader and collaborator.

I'm a fan of Cello music and this is VERY well played and a really wide variety of stuff which is a good thing. I've got nothing against the standard catalog of music but it's good to get outside the box.

PLUS it's got a rockin' all cello cover of Led Zepplin's Kashmir - so how can you go wrong?

    4 out of 5 stars A nice collection.......2005-01-15

Jane Morgan had only one really important hit on the charts, "Fascination." This song, of course, heads the list of those on this CD. The CD also has a couple of other songs which made minor splashes on the charts, none in the top 10, and a lot of other well-known (if not in her version) songs culled from albums she made for Kapp Records (a minor label on which she and Roger Williams were the only two stars) in the late 1950s. The best song on the CD, of course, is her great recording of "Fascination." But she does good versions of a number of others; the second best song on the CD, I think, is her version of "Love Is a Simple Thing" (best known by Robert Clary in the original cast of "New Faces of 1952").

The only track on this CD that I really think is below par is her recording of "Baubles, Bangles, and Beads," which ought to be done at a faster tempo than the way she does it. It isn't really BAD, but I much prefer other versions of the song.

Still, I like the CD quite a lot.

5 out of 5 stars Not forgetting the day the rains came.......2004-04-20

In some ways, Jane arrived on the music scene too late. Her music belonged in the pre-Elvis era but she had the talent, class and style to succeed in the rock'n'roll era despite that. Her only American top ten hit, Fascination, was a translation of the French song, Valse tzigane. Her only UK hit, The day the rains came, was a translation of another French song - it went all the way to number one in the UK but stalled just outside the top twenty in America. La jour ou la pluie viendra (to give it its original French title) was written by Gilbert Becaud, an excellent songwriter who also wrote songs that were translated into English as It must be him, Let it be me and What now my love.

This compilations includes both of those fine songs plus fourteen others and extensive liner notes. Jane had three other American hits. Chart students may be disappointed to note that Happy anniversary is the only one included here. The others, together with the three already mentioned, can be found on Greatest hits.

The rest of the album is filled with Jane's majestic performances of classic songs including Love makes the world go round, Wrap your troubles in dreams, Hello young lovers, It's easy to remember and Baubles bangles and beads. The most famous song here may be My favorite things, a song that originally appeared in The sound of music - it has now been adopted as a Christmas song and is sometimes included on Christmas albums.

Despite the omission of two minor hits, this is the best collection of Jane's music so far released.

If you enjoy the music of Margaret Whiting or Jo Stafford, you'll love Jane's music too.

    5 out of 5 stars Pure Elegance.......2000-09-23

Jane Morgan's unpretentious, simple style of singing appealed to me since I was a kid. She put out a lot of records, but is virtually forgotten. It's a shame, because her recordings can serve as the standard for so many modern classics. The only thing I missed on this CD was her recording of "Around the World". Other than that--elegant perfection.

5 out of 5 stars JANE's VOICE CLEAR AS CRYSTAL.......2000-02-12

I think THE JANE MORGAN COLLECTION is a great sampling of Ms.Morgan's talents. Jane was often backed by THE TROUBADORS. Rarely do they get mentioned. I think Jane's strong voice and sincerity kept her on top of the pop scene when rock was the rage. One of my favorite songs from the cd mentioned is "My Favorite Things." Jane sings it with such energy! I also love the fluid way Jane sings "Adios Muchachos" (I Get Ideas). She switches from English to Spanish with the greatest of ease. The cd is GREAT. The back of the cd is hard to read...and I have 20/20 vision. The front cover is a great shot of JANE MORGAN! Talented and beautiful.
